Chapter 15

Bpov

His whole body went stiff and he didn't move. If I weren't so use to vampires I'd be pretty freaked out about it. I opened my mouth eager to take back my question, but before I could he turned and looked at me. "Major is what I'm sometimes known as."

He told me his life story starting in the army at a young age to fight for something he believed in, moving up the ranks, how Maria changed him, and made him believe he didn't have a choice.

Hearing his story made me fall in love with his strength to go through all of that. To carry all the guilt, and sorrow and remain sane, was a testament to just how strong he was.

"I've killed thousands of people women, men, children. I've killed even more vampires. It's my past Bella, and I never wished I could erase it more than I do now because you deserve to have someone with as much goodness as you have in your heart and soul."

I rolled my eyes at his statement I'm sick of people telling me what I deserve. Jasper pulled into a gas station to refill the car. It was late into the night and I decided to go inside and get something to eat. Gas station food was horrible but I didn't want us to stop again. Jasper's story kept replaying through my mind again and without me noticing tears started running down my eyes. He had a hard existence, more hardships in one lifetime than anyone could possibly seem to imagine.

I fixed myself two greasy hotdogs with ketchup, and took extra napkins. I walked around aimlessly just grabbing random chips and drinks. By the time carried my items to the register I decided that I would do anything to make him happy, to erase the sorrow he carried with him. I would put aside my fear of being hurt and rejected again, in order to show him that he deserves happiness. He said it to be once and I needed him to believe it for himself.

Are you ok ma'am?" The man at the register asked me probably noticing my tear stained face. "I said your total is $20.56."

"I'm fine." I smiled at him and handed him the credit card Eve gave me. I looked outside to see Jasper leaning against the car waiting for me.

The gas station attendant looked at me warily and looked over towards Jasper. "Is he hurting you?" I turned to look at him in shock, why the hell would he think that? "No! No!" I shouted before sighing. "But I think I've been hurting him." He nodded his head and placed my items in a bag and I walked out of the store.

Jasper opened the door for me and placed my items inside the car and I hugged him. He seemed stunned at first but his arms wrapped around my waist and he planted his face in my hair. "You're worth it too." I whispered to him, and he squeezed me gently and kissed my forehead before supposedly pushing me away and standing up straight.

"What's wrong?" I asked him staring straight into his red-orange eyes hurt that he pushed me away.

"Get in the car," the urgency in his voice caused me to obey without even thinking about it. He walked quickly around the front of the car to the driver side and got in.

"There are cops about 3 miles back talking about finding a girl fitting your description. We need to get out of Washington before they catch up to us."

My eyes widened at the realization. "Charlie must be looking for me! I'm 18 so they can't hold me!"

I told my dad not to look for me. I knew he wouldn't listen but I kinda hoped he would. I didn't want him hurt by what ever was happening. Did Victoria have a back up plan for if she was killed? Or was it something else?

Oh Crap! Jake! "Do you smell any of the wolves?"

"No. But we need to move." He accelerated and the car jumped forward while pushing calm waves into me.

"Who is this friend that gave you the car?" he asked not looking at me.

I hesitated Eve said I couldn't tell anyone who she was. But Jasper wasn't just anyone. I should tell him but I don't want to put any more people in danger because of me, I promised Eve.

"Fuck!" Jasper cursed under his breath while slowing down. "There's a cop two blocks away."

I was relived to be distracted from the question but only for a second before I started to panic again. My heart was racing, pounding against my rib cage. I felt like a criminal.

"What do we do?!"

"Stay calm they are just going to be canvassing certain areas. We need to move fast and be out of the area before they get to the gas station. Someone can ID you from there."

I nodded but didn't say anything. I looked out the window trying to calm my nerves. Music was playing softly from the radio so low I couldn't recognize the song. I wanted to turn it up but I was too afraid, too afraid to move from the position I was in fearing one little movement would bring back all the fear that I was trying to suppress.

We passed a campsite before I heard the sirens and the police car come into view behind us with flashing red and blue lights.
