DISCLAIMER: I hate you, Hugo! Just kidding but what's serious is that I don't own Les Mis. *dramatically sobs*
Eponine's POV
I woke up to the sound of sobbing from the bathroom. Why the hell would 'Sette be crying in the bathroom? I walked over quickly to the bathroom door and knocked hard. "Cosette Fauchelevant! Open up! Whatever is wrong with you, you better tell me right now!" I said a little louder than my normal volume. She kept crying and didn't answer. Then I heard her sing something very softly.
We clawed, we chained our hearts in vain
We jumped never asking why
We kissed, I fell under your spell.
A love no one could deny
Wrecking ball? I pressed my ear on the door and listened. Her voice was cracked because she was crying and singing at the same time. She sounded very broken and it wasn't the Cosette I've seen before. I knocked again, only softer. Nothing. Just her cracking voice and the sound of the hollowness of the bathroom. I sighed and tried to turn the knob. It turned and I stepped in quietly. Our bathroom wasn't extremely big but it wasn't too small. 'Sette was sitting on the lid of the toilet bowl and she was holding her pink-covered phone in her hand. Her head was down and her blonde hair was hanging down, almost covering her face. I nearly passed out when I looked down at her clothing and found that she was wearing only a black bra and her underwear. I gasped and hurried over to her. I put a hand on her shoulder and frantically asked, "What's going on? You can tell me anything, Cosette. It's alright. Everything's going to be okay." I rubbed her back up and down as she continued singing.
Don't you ever say, I just walked away
I will always want you
I could never lie, running for my life
I will always want you
Then she broke down crying even more before getting to the chorus part.
I came in like a wrecking ball
I never hit so hard in love
All I wanted was to break your walls
All you ever did was...break me
Yeah, you...you wreck me
I tried to be her consolation but it didn't seem to work. "Cosette, what's wrong? Please stop crying and let it out on me. Everything's going to be fine." I said as she stopped mid-sentence of the song and shot her head up, revealing her terribly ruined make-up. Eyeshadow splashed on her eyelids, lipstick all over her face, mascara across her nose and cheeks, tears both dry and fresh covering her whole face. I started panicking in my head and I had no idea what to do. I stood up slowly to get a hairband and went back to 'Sette to tie her hair away from her face. She mumbled a quiet 'thank you' and wiped her face with her hands. "For the millionth time, what is wrong?" I asked. She handed me her phone and I stared at the screen, bewildered but at the same time, furious.
A heart full of love, a heart full of song
I'm doing everything all wrong
I remember not knowing your name and you didn't know mine
Oh, Cosette, my beautiful flower
It's since eternity that I've met you and loved you
But it appears that eternity isn't forever
I'm terribly sorry and upset
But never have I been so tempted to love another girl other than you
I thought it was best if you had some time alone
Our love is just simply not meant to be...
Yours, Marius Pontmercy
I clenched my fists, almost crushing 'Sette's phone into pieces. Fuck the asshole. How come I didn't know what a douche he is?! She must have seen my reaction so she quickly grabbed the phone from my hand. I sighed a heavy sigh and looked up at 'Sette, putting a hand on her bare lap. "It's alright, Cosette. I'll fuck him hard so-"
"Please, don't do anything about this. It's okay having him fuck some other girl and fill her with shit she doesn't deserve. I'm sure he'll just fuck her up discreetly and then he'll dump her again...just like how he fucked me up just now with his stupid shitty text!" She screamed. I stared at her, wide-eyed. She never ever said bad words in the past forever years that I've known her. She suddenly just realized that she said a lot of bad words in just one phrase so she covered her mouth and blushed a little. "Seriously, you don't have to hide your feelings because I'm here for you and you can say as many bad words as you want because I don't give a damn about how people say things and you're just this lucky to have a friend as awesome and carefree as me." I said, smirking as she laughed a bit. Then we heard a knock on the front door. We whipped our heads towards the bathroom door and I stood up. I looked back at 'Sette, who looked like a total wreck, and handed her a towel to wipe her face with and told her to dress up while I talked to whoever knocked on the door. She nodded and started washing her face as I walked out of the bathroom, closing the door behind me. I walked up to the front door and opened it. Jehan was standing there, looking somewhat guilty and he had a bouquet of flowers in his hand. "Oh, hi, Jehan. What brings you here?" I asked, ushering him into the room. He sat on a chair near 'Sette's vanity and handed the flowers to me. They were a combination of daisies, tulips and roses. "They are for Cosette. I have to talk to her, if she's free, of course." Jehan said. I nodded and walked over to the bathroom door with the bouquet still in my hand. I knocked on the door several times and received a "What?" from 'Sette. "There's someone here who wants to talk to you. He's not you-know-who but he's in Les Amis so hurry up." I said a little impatiently. "No need to rush her too much, Ep. I can wait. It's perfectly alright for me to wait. After all, patience is a virtue-"
"Jehan, no lying." I warned him with a chuckle as he laughed a little, too. "Fine, fine. Patience is not a virtue. Anyway, I've had this question for you since a long time already but I somehow never got to ask properly." Jehan said. I nodded slowly and cautiously. "Yes? Go on." I said, dragging a chair to sit right across from him and sat on it. He hesitated for a moment then asked in a very lovesick tone, "Are you and Enjolras an item?" I was very confused and couldn't seem to process anything through my mind. "Excuse me?" I asked. He smiled and repeated his question. "Are you and Enjolras an item?" I shook my head rapidly and started protesting but I didn't quite 'protest', I was stammering. He let out a laugh and put a hand on my shoulder gently. "It's alright not to admit," he said then leaned in closer. "but I could see a spark between the two of you. It seems to be love and romance. You really have to do something about this and definitely keep it going. You like him, don't you? Just be honest. I promise I won't tell." Jehan said. He paused for a moment, looking like he just remembered something and giggled a little. "I don't like him, Jehan." I said but it didn't seem to convince him. "Well, I don't want to lie. Especially not to you because you'd believe that I 'love' him anyway but I guess...I do have feelings. I'm not so sure myself." I replied. Jehan clapped his hands happily that I finally admitted. "You see, Ep, it's great to like someone and for your case, it is obvious." He said, smirking. I shook my head. "What?!"
"Your 'like' for Enjolras is obvious. Very obvious, in fact. Everyone...in the whole school knows." He said in a barely audible voice. I froze like a statue and slowly opened my mouth but no words came out. Then he burst out laughing. "Just kidding. Only I know and probably Cosette, Musichetta and Azelma but not anyone else." Jehan said and winked. I wanted to smack him with a hammer for kidding me in a very dangerous way but I just tickled him since he was a fierce detester of tickles. "Stop! Please!" Jehan shouted between laughs as 'Sette came out of the bathroom, looking practically like a lark. Like, hell no she doesn't! Her hair was a total mess (like Ke$ha's), she wore a way oversize T-shirt that hung onto her shoulder, a bunch of bangles on her wrist, shorter than thigh-length shorts, her make-up was even more messed up than before, just more proper mascara but the eyeshadow and lipstick was awful-looking. I and Jehan gaped at her, then we looked at each other, and back at her again, still gaping. "What...happened?" Jehan literally choked out. 'Sette smiled drunkenly as if she'd tried absolutely all of the drugs in the world and said, "I really don't know what I'd be without Marius." I laughed rather bitterly and replied, "You'd be single. As simple as that." Jehan shifted in his seat as 'Sette leaned against the door frame, almost hitting her head on it. That was when I saw something sparkly on her eyebrow and something black on her other shoulder, the one that the shirt didn't cover. I squinted and a little while later, when I'd figured out that she pierced her eyebrow and put on a tattoo of a black flower, gravity pulled my jaw down straight to the ground. "What the hell are you thinking?!" I screamed at 'Sette. 'Sette lifted her head up to look at me then walked towards the chair next to me. I stood up and grabbed her shoulders. "What is wrong with you?! You didn't necessarily have to do this! You are insane!" I shouted. 'Sette frowned all of a sudden, held her hand up and lowered it closer to my face. I shut my eyes, ready to get slapped by my best friend for life but to my surprise, she dropped her hand and started sobbing. She sank to the floor and cried like there was no tomorrow. I glanced at Jehan, whose face was filled with both horror and surprise. He grabbed my shirt and tugged on it a little. "What is she doing?" He asked. I shrugged and turned back to 'Sette. "I don't think you should talk to her yet. It's very risky although I've never experienced any of her drama since we've been friends." I replied. He nodded as my phone rang. "Hello?" I answered.
"Oh, hi, Pony. Is Jehan there with you?" Bahorel asked from the other line. "Yes, he is."
"Okay, great. I was just wondering where he was because I got up this morning and didn't find him anywhere, then I called the other guys and no one saw him so you were the only one I didn't ask. Is everything alright there?" He asked. I bit down on my lower lip and replied, "Sure, everything's great. Well," I paused, looking at 'Sette, who was still crying and she was already banging the floor. "talk to you later. I have a...uh...an emergency bladder. It's almost leaking. Bye." I said quickly.
"Bye." Bahorel said awkwardly as I hung up. "Who was that?" Jehan asked, holding back his laughter.
"Someone's very worried roommate." I said, throwing my phone on my bed. "So what do we do with her?" Jehan asked, looking at 'Sette. She was really tired from all the crying and her make-up was ever so ruined. She looked awful. I and Jehan helped her up to a chair and a few minutes later of nothing but consoling, she finally stopped sobbing. Jehan remembered the flowers he brought her so he went to get the bouquet and handed it to her. 'Sette managed a feeble smile and took it from him. "What is it for?" She asked softly and sniffed her nose.
"I...owe you an enormous apology. I don't want you to think about it since you just stopped crying a minute ago and-"
"If this has something to do with Pontmercy, spit it out." 'Sette spat. Jehan visibly gulped and wiped a drop of sweat from his forehead. His hands were shaking and his knees were, too. "Well, um, I kind of helped...Marius write...the poem. The one you...received this morning." He said carefully. 'Sette stared at him for a long time before opening her mouth but nothing came out. She was a fish for a while, opening and closing her mouth a couple of times. She had an I-don't-want-to-be-your-friend-anymore look but instead of saying 'I don't want to be your friend', she said, "It's okay, I guess. I'm just...disappointed in you. I didn't think you'd be the kind of person who'd help your friend break up with his girlfriend in a poem. I thought you love romance and I thought you believe in love. Shouldn't you still be the same?"
"Cosette, people change over time but not me. I'm still in love with love and poetry and I'll never abandon that."
"Then why did you help Marius write the poem?" 'Sette asked desperately. "You must understand that I didn't want to do it to break your heart but Marius is my friend and whenever I needed help, he helped me and now I feel like it's time to make-up for the past that he has helped me. I'm very sorry, Cosette, but I didn't want to do it at first. I almost cried while writing the poem, thinking about how you'd feel when you receive it. I hate seeing people break up because it's just plain fatal. I think Marius thinks it just doesn't work out between the two of you and maybe he just wants to take a break. Probably not take a break from you but the relationship. Honestly, I've always thought that you and Marius were a very cute couple and I thought you'd be together for probably a lifetime but just give it time. I'm sure he'll come back to you any time soon." Jehan said, smiling reassuringly, put a hand on 'Sette's shoulder, gave her a big hug and walked out of our room. As I accompanied him to the front door, I saw a pink letter on the ground. It was addressed to 'Sette so I brought it in after saying goodbye to Jehan. I closed the door and came back to sit down next to 'Sette. "I know it's hard for you to leave Marius and all. Relationships are not everlasting, you know." I said, giving her a hug. She started crying on my shoulder as she hugged me back. The letter could be from Marius and she's crying...again. It's probably a bad idea to give it to her now. I slipped the letter under my bottom as she asked, "What time is it?" I looked at the clock. 7:45. "Shit. School's starting in 15 minutes! Hurry up and get dressed!" I said, running to my closet and started picking out my clothes. I stopped when I felt no movement behind me, where 'Sette was sitting. "I'm already dressed." She said. I rolled my eyes. "You've completely lost yourself this morning and I'm not going to let you go like this." I said, walking over to her, grabbed her wrist and dragged her to her closet. I opened her closet and took out a pink shirt with puffy sleeves, a pink and purple blended skirt with a tulip at the bottom and a pair of pink pumps then I tried to side-braid her hair with a white ribbon. I didn't let her put on any make-up because one: if she started crying again, her make-up would be ruined again and everything would be the same and second: I convinced her that natural beauty is way better than fake beauty. I quickly took a shower and changed into my green T-shirt and jeans. I slipped on my red converse shoes as 'Sette put on her pink pumps and we headed off right to school.
When we got to school, we were a few minutes late. Luckily, my first period was Math so I and 'Sette were together in the class. I forgot that Marius was in our class, too. I tried to avoid him by sitting at the other side of the room. Mr. Javert was gone again and the class became a zoo. I and 'Sette sat quietly, talking to each other. That was when the moment we hadn't been waiting for came. Marius strode over to us and sat next to me. "Hey." He said, smirking like a person trying to flirt. All of a sudden, a peculiar thought hit me. Marius has a crush on me and that's why he broke up with Cosette. I nervously started biting my nails and glanced over at 'Sette but she wasn't sitting next to me anymore. I looked around the room frantically but 'Sette was nowhere to be found. I turned my attention back to Marius, whose sitting position was, how other people would call it, sexy. I thought nothing of it, to be totally honest, but he seemed to want to get my attention so badly. I just faked a smile and turned back to my work. "Do you know how hot you really are? Those curves are so killing me right now." He said as I stiffened. Gross! There was a problem, however, with his sentence. He never spoke like that since I've known him. He wasn't the I'm-gonna-get-your-attention-babe type. I gulped and tried to stop thinking about everything around me. Mr. Javert finally came back (and saved my life) and sent literally everyone who wasn't on task while he was away to Madame Fantine's office. There were really about six people left in the class and I and Marius were one of them. "So are you up for a date with me? Tomorrow at six at the Musain." He whispered. I suddenly felt anger swelling inside of me. I stood up, asked Mr. Javert to go to the toilet and when he agreed, I stood behind the door. I made eye contact with Marius and motioned him to follow me out. "Excuse me, Monsieur Javert, but I forgot something in my locker. May I go get it?" He asked Mr. Javert. Mr. Javert massaged his temples and nodded. "You had a lot of time when I wasn't here. Just...go." He said. Marius ran out of the room and I pulled him aside. I grabbed his wrists harshly. "Ow! What was that for? Let me guess," Marius paused and puckered up. My hand flew straight up, wanting to slap him but I forced it down and just kept calm even though my insides were clenching in anger. "You fucking broke up with Cosette. You cannot be fucking serious right now. You just broke up with her to fucking get with me when I don't even have anything to do with you. Have you lost your brain or something? You fucking broke my best friend's heart and yet you have the guts to flirt with me right in her face! You are one fucking asshole...And you should know that." I snapped and walked away. I stopped in the middle of my track and turned around, only to see his face that was filled with hurt and confusion. "And I'm not up for a date with you. Sorry." I said a little less harshly than before and continued walking towards Math class. The bell rang right at the moment I grabbed the knob so I continued walking to my locker to grab my stuff for History class. I walked into History class and found most of my close friends already there, laughing and talking. I caught a glimpse of Enjolras sitting in the corner, reading the History textbook (Bor-ing!) so I walked over to start up a conversation. "Oh, hi, Ep." He said, looking up from his textbook. "Hey. I was wondering, did you enjoy Saturday? I think it was a pretty fun day, considering we went to Disneyland and had so much fun! Not to mention a killjoy somewhere over the barricade..." I said, teasing him a little. He laughed and closed his textbook, putting it on his table. "I actually liked it considering it was the stupidest place I've ever been to. Actually, I take it back. I didn't like it, I loved it. No more words can explain." He said, smiling. His smile slowly turned into a fake one as I felt someone walk up behind me. I turned around and saw Michael. I smiled as he waved. "Hi, can I sit here?" He asked, pointing to the seat next to me. I nodded enthusiastically as he pulled the chair back. I realized that Enjolras never got to meet him properly yet so I turned to him but instead of seeing his face, I saw an empty seat. "Oh." I mumbled to myself. I didn't really know what was going on with him. It was either that he wasn't too pleased with Michael, a person who he hardly met, or he just wanted to take a water or bathroom break. I shrugged it off as Michael started talking to me. "I wanted to ask you something. Would you...um...go on a date with me? Tonight at 6 o'clock in my room. I'll order a take-out." He said. I almost let my mouth hang open. The second guy to ask me on a date in one morning. What the fuck? I faked a smile. "I'm sorry but I'm not free tonight nor every other night because homework is literally piling up for me and I really need to catch up. I'm very sorry but no thank you." I said. He smiled but I sensed hurt in his smile.
So two people asking me on a date in one day wasn't at all what I expected. What's next? A love letter from a secret admirer? I walked to my locker and as soon as I opened it, a rose-scented letter went flying out of my locker. I picked it up and started reading.
Dearest Eponine,
Roses are red, Violets are blue
I'll make this quick, I have a crush on you
Will you meet me tomorrow at the school fountain?
Sincerely, A secret admirer
Oh. My. Gosh. The third person! When I finished reading the letter, I stood there like an idiot. How the hell did this happen?!
Thanks for reading, my pretties! R&R!
