Chapter 6-A circle has no beginning and no end…
February, 2018:
He shouldn't be surprised to see her turning up at his doorstep, completely out of the blue-because it is so Alex- but he sort of is.
She's still got that sassy expression and that devil-may-care demeanor and yet, she looks just a little more lifeless than the old Alex used to. It's barely perceptible, but hey, he's lived with her for most of his life so he should be given some credit, right?
(Except he lives with Cami now, so these things shouldn't bother him.)
She gives him a curt nod and pushes her way inside, and makes for the couch, promptly grabbing the remote and switching on the television.
"Yes, you may come in, Alex." He rolls his eyes and shuts the door.
She gives him another look, even briefer than the previous one, and continues to flip channels with a mildly bored expression on her face. He stares at her uncertainly for a moment, and then slowly walks over to sit next to her. If the proximity bothers her, she doesn't show it. Oh yes, she's improved at their little game of deception, he'll give her that. But she can't fool him.
(And she knows it, too.)
They stare at the screen in silence for a while, while she channel surfs mindlessly. He feels like his mind went blank the moment she accidentally (on purpose) touched his skin when she pushed him to come inside. Even after all this time…
"So…where are the mini-Justins? I don't see any…" she says with a light smirk, still not looking directly at him.
"…what?" He stares at her incredulously.
"Kids, Justin." She deadpans.
He continues to look at her with a bewildered expression.
"Don't you have any yet?" There's a trace of bitterness as she says this, her mouth set in a grim line.
"Wha-? No, of course not!" He yelps, feeling a rush of blood to his face.
She finally turns to face him-involuntarily dropping the remote into her lap-and quirks up an eyebrow, as though to say, why is that so surprising?
He realizes what it sounds like a little too late and attempts to amend it, saying,
"A-All I meant was, if I did…you would've known about it. You know, you being their aunt and all…"
"Would I, though?"
"What?" He blinks perplexedly, "Of course you would be their aunt. You're my siste-"
"No." She says quietly, her dark hair curtaining half of her face, "Would I have known about it? Really?"
"Alex, I…"
"We haven't spoken in years, Justin." She laughs humorlessly, and adds softly, "…not that I blame you."
There's something about vulnerable Alex-who only ever comes out when he's involved-that breaks his heart all over again; every single fucking time. He unconsciously reaches out to touch her, but before he can…
"Alex?"
He whips around at the sound of his wife's voice. Alex looks up as well, a different emotion coloring her face. There's an almost comic moment where the three of them stare at each other, bodies frozen, like a scene from a movie.
(One of those stupid dramatic movies that Alex swears she hates but he knows that she loves.)
Alex is the first to make a move, surprisingly. She quickly stands up and faces Cami,
"I was just leaving."
It takes Cami a second to snap back into reality,
"What? Don't be silly, Alex. You just got here. By all means, make yourself welcome. We haven't had you over in ages." Cami smiles at her warmly.
"Yeah, well, I…" she trails off and inadvertently shifts her gaze to him and stiffens.
"Listen, I kind of have to run, but Justin will be here. Why don't you two catch up? I'll speak to you when I come back, alright?" She smiles and steps forward to give Alex a quick hug, and then picks up her handbag and rushes out the door.
(She has a sinking feeling that she will come to regret this decision later.)
A/N: I should probably go hide in a deep, dark hole right now. T.T
Words cannot describe how bad I feel for updating after 3 months. *sigh*...well, let's not dwell on it. The story is drawing to a close, after all.
This is kind of a filler chapter. To get us back into the proper timeline-i.e., we're back to where the story initially started. All flashbacks are over. No more time jumps, basically.
Hopefully, it'll be over by the next week. I'm on holiday now, so I can afford the time to type up the rest of it. And I will try my best to make it fast and make it good. Thank you so much for sticking with me so far. I only hope you can bear with me a little longer.
Thanks once again, dear readers. And if you're not too mad at me, please drop in a review!
