Present Day

"Jack. I'm not ready!" I complained. The sun started to peer through the gap in the curtains. Jack was tapping his foot as he waited for me at the door.

"Well, come on. We need to track down the Master before he does something drastic!" he called to me. I slipped on a singlet that was a light shade of violet. My jeans were the deep blue colour of the TARDIS and my western style boots were a dark tan colour. I open the bedroom door and collided into Jack in a rush to get my handbag.

"Sorry Jack. I didn't mean to collide into you." I felt really guilty; why should I?

"Hey. I'm not complaining!" Jack replied as he passed me my keys. "Got everything?"

"Yep. Let's go." I cheerily replied. This seemed a bit awkward having Jack follow me like a lost puppy, but it was comforting to know someone cared. I unlocked the car and jumped into the driver's seat. A man passing by smiled and waved. "Good morning, Miss Mayard."

I smiled and returned the greeting, "Good morning, Mr Frobisher."

Jack raised an eyebrow as I turned the ignition, "What?" I asked.

"Mr Frobisher looks a bit suspicious." Jack replied, as his eyes followed the trail.

"He's a nice gentleman." I retorted, "He's got no family here in Washington D.C. They all live in London. That's why I get on with him so well." Good ole London, it was and still is my second choice to hide if the Doctor found me here.

"Where do you want to start?" I asked Jack

"Where do you think a psychotic maniac would hang out in this place? Jack questioned me. I ponder for a moment.

"I know a place!" I remarked and quickly pulled out the drive, tearing down the side street where we were parked. Jack turned on the radio, tuning in and out of different stations until finally, pleased with his choice sat back in his seat.

"This is the life!" he exclaimed. I laughed at him. "What?" he quizzed.

"How on Earth can you be so laid back? We're chasing a killer for crying out loud!" I laughed down my last remark hysterically.

"Are you sure that you're not insane?" Jack joked; his deep booming laugh overlapped the song playing on the radio.

"Me? Insane? Well, Captain Jack Harkness, I thought that was one thing you knew about me. I am most definitely a mad hatter. Or if you like: I'm a mad woman with a blue box without a blue box." I giggled insanely, just to prove my point.

Jack looked away shaking his head. "Well one thing's for sure: you are definitely your father's daughter!"

"Thank you." I said sarcastically, "Now we will find the Master and have morning tea."

We drove in silence for a few moments. The radio was quietly whispering the song that was now playing, as I pulled up at our first searching point. It was a rubbish dump; where else would you look for a homicidal maniac with no feelings what so ever. I passed a hand-held radio to Jack and walked away from him. I turned back to see if had decided to follow me but the alley behind was deserted.

I trudged through row after row of wasted garbage, looking for any sign for the Master and with each row came further disappointment.

"Jack? I don't think he's here. Will meet you back at the car." I wait for a reply, but there was nothing.

"Jack? Can you hear me?" I started to run back down the twisting slopes and dead-ends. I was in a maze. A maze made of rotting garbage.

"Jack, please respond!" I screamed into the radio. Finally, a response but one that sent chills down my spine.

"Hello Kayla, long time since we saw each other. Picmusè, am I right?" came the sneering voice of the Master.

"What have you done with Jack?" I angrily asked, "If you have harmed him…"

"Jack is fine. Well, will be when he wakes up anyway. We need to talk, face-to-face." The Master replied. Crap…I thought. Jack's pretty much a hostage and I have to face The Master. What an excellent morning this is turning out to be!
