A Month and a Half Later

Jane woke to an empty bed but smiled when she heard music and the smell of coffee wafting out from the kitchen.

She and Maura had been together just shy of two months and Jane was as happy as she had ever been. Tommy was released from jail and was staying with their parents. From what her ma told her he was keeping his nose clean, staying out of trouble and was actually taking his court ordered classes seriously. Jane could only hope that Tommy would actually turn his life around this time.

Izzy had been moved back to her original office after Tommy's case and was now working on a few high profile one's from what little information she was able to tell Jane. Everything was working out and Jane couldn't ask for anything more.

She had spent more time in the last month at Maura's home then she had the penthouse. So much so that Jackson would actually call and check on her. She was sure going to miss him when she returned to Boston in a month, Maura too for that matter.

They still hadn't said those three words that scared most people, nor had they been intimate with one another other than the kissing, cuddling and soft caresses but Jane hoped that would change soon.

Tomorrow was Maura's thirty-fifth birthday and Jane wanted to pull out all the stops. She was undoubtedly in love with Maura and wanted her to know.

Jane was pulled away from her thoughts when Maura's smiling face entered the room with a steaming cup of coffee.

"I was hoping you were awake." She said as she set the cup on the bedside table before leaning over to kiss Jane good morning.

Jane smiled and pulled Maura into the bed with her. She buried her face in Maura's neck and hummed. "Morning gorgeous. How long have you been awake?"

Maura looked at her bedside table. "A little over two hours. I wanted to make you breakfast and hoped to spend a little time with you before leaving for work."

Jane smiled and pulled Maura a little closer. "So I take it, that means I need to get out of bed?"

"Precisely."

Jane sighed but released her hold on the other woman. She threw the covers back, stood and stretched. Her shirt raised a little and she caught Maura's eyes following the movement.

"Like what you see Doc?"

Maura blushed slightly before they both laughed. Making their way into the kitchen, Jane's stomach rumbled when the smell of bacon invaded her nose.

"I thought you said bacon was unhealthy." She remarked with a smirk as she prepared two plates. One for herself the other for Maura.

"Well, I just thought that just once wouldn't be so horrible."

Jane chuckled and set a plate in front of Maura, giving her a kiss to the crown of her head as she took a seat.

"Thanks babe, everything looks good."

They smiled at one another as they began to eat. After some light conversation Jane remembered Maura's birthday present that she bought and couldn't wait to give her.

"Oh, wait. Hold that thought, I'll be right back." Jane said as she scurried off back into the bedroom. She dug around in the back of the closet where she knew Maura wouldn't look and pulled out the gift.

She returned to the kitchen to a still dumbfounded Maura.

"Okay, so I know your birthday is tomorrow, but I couldn't wait to give you this." Jane remarked, holding the box out in front of herself.

Maura wiped her mouth and smiled. "Jane. You didn't have to get me anything."

Jane huffed, "Now what kind of girlfriend would I be if I didn't get you something for your birthday? A crappy one for sure." Jane remarked, answering her own question.

Maura accepted the box and slowly pulled away at the wrapping.

"Just rip it open already babe."

Maura laughed at Jane's excitement. The brunette's eagerness showed as she rocked back and forth on the heels of her sock clad feet.

Ripping off the last piece of wrapping paper, Maura opened the small box and gasped. "Jane. This is gorgeous."

"I know you have the real thing with Bass and all but I saw that the other day when you dragged me shopping and I couldn't bring myself to not get it."

Maura gently removed the small glass tortoise from the box to better examine it. "I love it, Jane. Thank you."

Jane smiled brightly before Maura kissed her soundly on the lips.

"So you really do like it?" Jane asked, sometimes her own insecurities made themselves known.

Maura kissed her again and reiterated her previous statement. "I love it. It's the best gift anyone has ever given to me."

"Well, there's more where that came from. I know you don't like surprises, but your friends and I thought that no birthday is complete without a party. So, tonight, put your best dress on because we are having dinner upstairs at Matignon at 9 with of course cake and presents, followed by some dancing downstairs. And I even invited your parents. Arthur is really great, your mom on the other hand still doesn't care for me but it's your birthday and I want everyone you care about to be a part of it."

"Awe." Maura said as she pressed her hand over her heart. "Jane, as great as that sounds, you know I have to work."

Jane shook her head. "No you don't."

"I'm pretty sure I do."

"Nope. I talked to a few of your friends down at the clinic and they told me that you have vacation days. So, the great girlfriend that I am. I pulled a few strings and was able to get you tomorrow off along with the following two days."

Maura was almost speechless. "How did you pull all of this off without me knowing?"

Jane flashed her Rizzoli smile, pulling Maura to her feet, she wrapped her arms loosely around her waist. "I can't tell you all my secrets now can I?"

Maura chuckled, " I suppose you can't." She remarked as she closed the remaining distance between them.

As Jane's luck would have it Maura's alarm sounded before things could get too heated. "I'm really starting to hate that sound."

Maura laughed as she pulled from the embrace to grab her bag. "So, you're actually going to dance with me on my birthday?"

"Of course. I'd do anything for you."

"Mmhm. And what happened to Jane Rizzoli can't dance?" Maura remarked with a slight laugh as she walked towards the door. Jane of course following behind.

"Hey! I can dance. See watch…."

Jane took a step back and began to do the sprinkler before doing what Maura could only describe as running in place.

Maura broke into hysterical laughter as Jane's "dancing" became worse with each passing second. Holding her stomach, she regained her composure but only slightly. "Jane, sweetheart, please stop before you hurt yourself."

"What? You don't like my smooth moves? Those were some of my best, I was actually going to surprise you with them tomorrow night."

Maura snorted with laughter. "Smooth? Jane, that was by no means smooth. I thought you were having a stroke. I wasn't sure if I should be laughing or calling for an ambulance."

"Dang Maur, tell me how you really feel. Alright, alright I'll stop." Jane said as she too started to laugh.

"See you for lunch?"

"Wouldn't miss it and no more dancing." Maura said before kissing Jane once again. She started to walk away but turned back to see Jane still chuckling.

She gave her a slight wave and laughed as she stepped onto the elevator. She was a lucky woman for sure.
