Recall: "Hey...I...I didn't mean to make you-"
"Inuyasha..." She interrupted smiling softly. "It's alright. You didn't know."
"I know that but...I didn't think you'd cry. I mean-"
"Hey mutt!" Inuyasha looked over, annoyed that Koga kept interrupting him.
"It's fine, Inuyasha."
"It's not!" She held her hands up.
"It is." Instead of arguing, Inuyasha just took his chair and went in line. Kagome went outside; Probably shooting hoops. He thought. He was more than pissed this morning. Pissed off that he made Kagome hurt, even more that he cared.
Chapter 7: Physicals II
Inuyasha sat on the medical table, arms crossed while tapping his fingers impatiently. He was the last demon to complete his physical. Personally, Inuyasha thought that his check up took the longest. Everyone else was done within 15-20 minutes. Inuyasha was there for a good 45 minutes.
Hmph, I know why. He thought to himself, glaring at Dr. Akitoki as he wrote down information in his book.
For some reason, this doctor as well as the others have had some kind of strange fascination with half-demons. Having full demons was a normal thing, there whole system was based on demons. However, there was only a small amount of half-demons the reside at the hospital, so they would do test on them as much as possible. Inuyasha would always hate the tests. They would always hurt, and the side effects weren't too pleasant either. But, there was nothing they could do, he was forced to be a ginepig for the rest of his life.
"Alright, Inuyasha, you're good to go." Akitoki said. Inuyasha just got off from the table, glaring at the doctor as he walked out of the room.
Kikyo waited until Inuyasha was out of the room. He could feel her eyes on him, and it made his skin crawl with irratation. There was nothing he wanted to do more than to tear her eyes out from her head and rip out her heart. Her blood would satisfy him more than anyone he's ever killed.
Someday.
Kagome was sitting down on the black top, staring at the basketball hoop. She couldn't help, but to think about her family and how she was treated by them. Not her little brother; she was always happy to see him. Her parents were a different story. It's okay though. She thought to herself. Inuyasha had no way of knowing. But I better cool it for a while.
It wasn't that she didn't trust the patients. Not like they can use it to their advantage. They were stuck in this prison for the rest of their lives. And even if they managed to get out, why would they waste their time looking to kill her family. Didn't make any sense to her. They seemed a bit more civil than humans, but that was just an opinion. She really had no facts about them, but maybe that could change.
Kagome's attention suddenly went to the doors, as she saw the demons walking out. She stood up and brushed herself off. Like always, the demons went with their cliques while the others went on the court.
Inuyasha was included.
"Hey guys." She said.
"You okay, mi'lady." Miroku asked making Kagome smile.
"I'm fine, really. I don't know what came over me."
"Are you sure?" Hakaku asked. "Cause we've never seen you like that."
"Positive." She dribbled the ball a few times. "Now are we gonna play, or are yall gonna keep treating me like a baby."
"Cause you are a baby, ya stupid wench." Inuyasha mumbled. Truth be told, he was concerned about her well being, but he didn't want everything to seem awkward between them.
However, his words only made Kagome smile harder. She still didn't understand it, but for some reason when he would snap at her it was normal. It almost felt weird when he was acting nice to her. Like if he was scared for her, and she couldn't have him of all people worry about her. It was more reassuring when he did say silly things. She didn't always agree with what he said, but at least he was acting like his old self.
"This baby is gonna kick your butt again." She said slamming the ball his way. The guys let out a playful 'oooh' as they went into their places.
"Looks like the lovely lady's gonna school you again, mutt." Koga said, winking at Kagome. She only winked back.
"Hmph, ya right, fucking wolf." He said, throwing it back at her. "She's been getting lucky, but not today."
"Ms. Higurashi!" Before Kagome could take a step towards her opponent, she heard he name called multiple times. She looked to see Dr. Akitoki.
"What does that ass munch want?" Inuyasha said, making the other guys laugh. Kagome rolled her eyes.
"It would appear that he needs to discuss something with you." Menomaru said. She shrugged.
"I'll be back." She said jogging towards the doctor.
The look on his face indicated that he wasn't the least bit amused about what she was doing. His arms were crossed and his glasses were at the bridge of his nose. Hopefully he would understand the situation and not try to argue as Kikyo as done constantly.
"Hello Doctor, I thought the physicals were over." She said.
"Not quite. I still have to view them during their outdoors activity."
"Oh, well. Um...was I in the way." Akitoki sighed, stepping closer to her.
"Kagome what are you doing with these demons." She looked over to them before looking back at him.
"Nothing against the rules."
"You told me you knew of their dangerous nature."
"I've been informed."
"Then what are you doing?" She held up her hands.
"Look, I'm just playing ball with them. I did it the first day I arrived. If they wanted to hurt me, I think they would have done so already." Akitoki sighed.
"Forgive me, Ms. Higurashi."
"Kagome, please."
"Kagome. I don't want to see you get hurt."
"I won't. Trust me, there going easy on me." With that she walked away from him, hoping he would back off a bit. Maybe I should listen to him. She thought suddenly. I mean, he has worked here longer than I have. Maybe he knows what he's talking about.
"What was that all about?" Hiten asked. Kagome shook her head.
"Oh, it was nothing. Now lets play." She said getting into position. Inuyasha huffed. He didn't know what it was, but he didn't like Kagome talking to that guy. He sure as hell didn't like him, but it just made him angry that he was talking to her about God knows what. The thought of them made him slam the ball her way.
Kagome stumbled a bit before rolling her eyes. Agh, what did I do now? She thought to herself. It was obvious that Inuyasha wasn't happy with her, again. But, she didn't have the slightest clue as to what she did this time.
"So what were yall talking about?" Inuyasha asked. Kagome raised an eyebrow.
"Why do you need to know?" She responded, dribbling the ball.
"No reason, I just didn't figure you that type of a girl." Kagome eyes widened. The demons groaned, knowing full well that Inuyasha was going too far.
"And what type of girl would that be?" She growled out, trying to keep her cool.
"A whore." With out a second thought, Kagome threw the ball dead in his face. The shock had Inuyasha on the floor.
"Don't you ever call me that again, ya jerk!" The others soon started to laugh at him.
"Serves ya right, mutt." Inuyasha growled before standing back up, making his way to Kagome.
"I'll fucking kill you!"
"Guards!" She heard Akitoki shout. Before she could comprehend what was going on, she saw one guard pointing a gun at Inuyasha while the other held him down.
"Hey what gives?!" Miroku shouted, about to help when the guard suddenly pointed the gun in his direction.
"Fuck off asshole, or you're next." He held his hands up, backing away slowly.
"That's enough." Kagome said, grabbing his shoulder. "Leave him alone."
"So he didn't just try to attack you?" Akitoki asked.
"Of course not. He couldn't hurt me if he tried." Kagome said confidently.
"Kiss my ass bitch!"
"Inuyasha will you just shut up!"
"What seems to be the trouble?" A voice asked. Kagome turned to see a man with pale skin and long black hair tied into a pony-tail. There was also a woman with long white hair with equally pale skin and red lips.
"Who's that?" Kagome asked.
"Doctor Naraku Kurosawa." Akitoki whispered to her. "The head doctor. You know, your boss."
"M-my boss?" She gulped.
"Doctor Kurosawa." Kikyo said, walking up to him. "I wasn't expecting a visit from you."
"I had some time off. Wanted to see how the patients were faring." Kagome could hear some of the demons growling at him. It was giving her an uneasy feeling. Perhaps this is the doctor that did so many experiments on them. She observed him closer. His eyes were a little soft and he did have a pleasant smile. He doesn't seem like a bad guy.
"W-well, I wish I was a bit more prepared for this visit." Kikyo stuttered. But, if this guy can terrify Kikyo, maybe I should be worried.
"It's perfectly fine, Ms. Kikyo." Naraku turned to Akitoki. "Akitoki." He acknowledged, shaking his hand.
"Doctor." He responded. Naraku then turned to Kagome, who's heart was speeding like crazy.
"I'm sorry I haven't had the pleasure." He stuck his hand out which Kagome hurridly accepted.
"Kagome Higurashi."
"Naraku Kurosawa. This is my assistant Tsubaki Wakahisa." Tsubaki rolled her eyes.
"Charmed." Kagome didn't know why, but for some reason she gave off the same vibe as Kikyo. Cold, bitter and a tad bit...
Rude
"So tell me, what happened here?"
"Well," Akitoki started. "I was just telling Kagome here that I didn't agree with her being active with the demons when this half breed attacked her." Inuyasha growled, showing off his fangs. The guards gripped him tighter. Kagome held her arms up.
"That's not what happened. He didn't attack me. We were just playing kind of rough."
"I don't need your help you fucking wench." Inuyasha shouted. Kagome gave him a stern look.
"I'm not helping. I'm just telling the truth, aren't I?" Come on, Inuyasha. Just let go of your pride for a second.
"Playing?" Naraku said. "You mean to tell me you actually fraternize with these demons. Ms. Kikyo, you actually allow this?"
"Absolutely not!" She shouted. Kagome rolled her eyes. Of course she wasn't gonna stick up for me. "I've told her many times that I didn't agree with this, yet she does what she wants."
"I-It just didn't seem the big deal. I mean, if they wanted to hurt me they would have done so."
"Reguardless, you need to be listening to you superiors." Kikyo said.
"Oh, like the patients need to be listening to your harsh rants. I don't think so. Someone needs to stick up to you." Tsubaki raised an eyebrow in amusement.
"Well that was unexpected."
"What do you mean, Ms. Kagome?" She looked at Kikyo before looking back to him.
"It's not really something I'd like to discuss in front of everyone."
"I see. Perhaps we can talk about this more in my office." Unfortunately for Kagome, she didn't notice the demons shaking their heads 'no', pleading for her not to follow.
"Ya, that sounds good."
"Very well. Follow me." He said walking away, Kagome not far behind.
"Release him." Akitoki said to the guards, letting him go.
"Bitch ass." He said before walking off the the other demons. Akitoki and the guards left to go inside.
"What the fuck was that, mutt?!" Koga said, pushing him.
"Did you get Kagome in trouble?" Ginta asked.
"Lay off. I told you she's fucking one of them. She's strolling off right now with that fucking piece of shit."
"She'd never betray us." Hakaku said.
"She went off with him didn't she."
"She's not Kikyo." Menomaru suddenly said. Inuyasha growled.
"Fuck you guys." He said, storming away from them. Fuck them and fuck that bitch. He thought to himself. They don't know jack shit. She's a little whiney bitch, and I know she's gonna betray us. I know it.
"Looks like someone's moving in on your territory." Tsubaki mocked. Kikyo huffed at her.
"You shouldn't go asuming things you know nothing about."
"Plainly obvious. Strange, I would think you'd have gotten rid of her by now." Kikyo smirked.
"Oh, I'm working on it."
"Better hurry before she becomes Naraku's new favorite." She turned and glared at Tsubaki.
"Why Tsubaki, it would seem as if your medicine is no longer working. Your wrinkles are starting to come in." Tsubaki gasped, covering her face with her hands. She then glared at Kikyo, taking her hands away; realizing it was a joke.
"All I'm suggesting is you better send her running to one of the safer levels before she snatches your title." Kikyo pointed her finger at her.
"That will never happen."
"Don't be so sure."
Walking to Naraku's office was a pretty long distance. Not only did they have to take the elevator but they had to past a series of rooms that sent shivers down Kagome's spine. A few science labs and equipment rooms but most were operating rooms. It was like suddenly, all the creepy stories the demons told her rushed into her head at once. It made her slightly sick.
"This way, Ms. Kagome." Naraku said, interrupting her thoughts.
"Oh Kagome please." She said, walking into the room. It was very spacious. A black and gray room, telling Kagome that he might either be simple or incredibly bland.
"Have a seat." He said, walking over to his cabinet. "Can I offer you something to drink?"
"Nothing for me, thank you."
"Now tell me, what this is about? Are you unhappy working with Kikyo. Because we can always transfer you to another floor."
"As much as I don't agree with Kikyo, I could never leave the patients behind."
"Leave them behind?"
"It's just that I've developed such a strong bond with some of them. True there's still a lot I haven't met yet, but maybe with time they might open up to me so I can help them a lot more."
"A terrific notion, but how do you think you'll accomplish this?"
"Actually, it doesn't seem like they are getting anywhere with Kikyo's 10 o'clock class. Perhaps if I..." Naraku chuckled.
"You seem to forget, little one. You've just started here. I can not give you any kind of promotion just yet."
"It's not a promotion, sir. I'm fully aware that I'm new, but I don't want a raise. I'm not doing this for any type of money. I just want to help them in a sense. Help them in some kind of way. I'm only asking for a small class. Nothing big. Please?" Naraku placed his hand on his chin, taking in everything she was saying.
"And what's in it for you?" She smiled to herself.
"I just want to help. When I applied for the position, I was told that I'd be helping people. When I found out they were demons I was a little scared, but after meeting them, I was more determined."
"Interesting."
"Please, I know I can help them."
"And you don't think that the demons are being helped under the control of Kikyo." Kagome sighed.
"With all due respect, she makes their situation worse."
"Worse you say?"
"Absolutely. She treats them with disrespect and acts like she has no intention of helping them."
"Interesting. I'm surprised that the previous nurses haven't informed me of such a thing."
"I don't understand it either. But, I'm sure I can do this. Please give me a chance. I won't be any trouble." He laughed.
"And what kind of trouble can a young thing like you cause." Kagome smiled then shrugged. Naraku nodded a few times before pointing to her. "I'm gonna try something with you."
"O-oh. Um...what would that be."
"Just a few steps proving yourself.
"Oh okay. Tell me what I have to do."
"A week away from floor 6."
"Excuse me."
"A week. I'll place you in with another unit where you will be familiar with other kinds of demons. It will be also good for you to become aquainted with the other staff." Kagome seemed a bit hesitant about the situation. "Is there something wrong."
"N-no, it's just, a week?"
"Perfectly reasonable if you ask me. You'll start this upcoming Monday. If I find that you are doing an acceptional job, I'll let you start your rehabilitation on one demon."
"Just one."
"Well for now. Of course you have to keep records of all your progress so I can view them."
"Yes sir, I will. Um...who did you have in mind?" Naraku paused for a second before smirking.
"How about the half breed." Kagome cringed at the term.
"Y-you mean Inuyasha."
"Yes, him."
"May I ask why him of all the patients?" After that little episode that happened between them, she didn't think he'd be at all thrilled about it.
"I have a, sort of, fascination with half breeds. It's interesting learning about them. Test him on whatever you like everyday for a month. Report back to me once a week. That will determine whether you may have you're class." Kagome smiled.
"Thank you so much, sir." She said leaving the office. Once she was outside, she let out a sigh of relief. The doctor didn't seem like a bad guy, but there's no way the demons would make up half the things they told her. Agh, I wonder how they are gonna react when I tell them I'm gonna be gone for a week.
