"Wren, let's go!" Dick called, his voice echoing through the Cave.
"I'm coming." Ann answered back. "I think Bruce heard you at his meeting in Central City."
Dick stuck his tongue out at her as he placed his mask on his face fully becoming Robin, the Boy Wonder. Ann shook her head placing her own domino mask over her eyes to truly become Wren and begin the days adventure. Bruce had been firm that they were not to wander from what he had designated the Birds Nest of Gotham while he was away. They were only ten and being allowed out on their own was something entirely new to them though their training motorcycles weren't having been able to patrol with them most nights.
"Think anything will happen tonight?" Wren asked revving her blue and white bike.
"Does anything ever happen in Birds Nest?" Robin shot back as he rode off.
They raced out of the hidden road at just fifty miles an hour because Bruce had the bikes set so that they couldn't go any faster. Even though they'd been riding since after their birthday as a present from Bruce so that they wouldn't have to always ride in the Batmobile. Plus it meant that they would have a way to get around and not be left behind if there was a chase or something where someone got separated. Reaching their destination the twins left their bikes concealed in a garage and headed for the rooftops to begin their night for real.
"Let's just run together for now then we'll split up." Robin suggested looking around.
Wren shrugged, "Sounds good to me."
"Then let's go."
Side by side they ran across the rooftops, flipping and flying through the air laughing as they went though most of the time it seemed like cackling. The were serious about their work but that never stopped them from having fun especially in the Birds Nest. A few blacks away they stopped looking down onto the streets hoping to find or do something for the night.
Two hours into their patrol they had already stopped a thief and his gang from robbing a couple and an attempted rape. Though young they knew of these things as they were getting used to the going ons in the city even if they didn't like it. Because Gotham was a dark place where the craziest of the crazy roamed in the night or were locked up in Arkham Asylum.
"Robin." Wren called to her brother as she stopped. "This is getting boring."
"Yeah." Robin agreed crossing his arms. "But what can we do?"
"Well.. there is something."
"Are you thinking about what I think you're thinking about?"
"Maybe."
"Then let's do it."
They grinned at one another heading back to their bikes in order to go through with their plan and also to get to where the plan would begin. The Birds Nest would survive for one night now that all the criminals thought the birds were out and about. Wren followed Robin to a place that they had once spied Green Arrow coming from once before, an old telephone booth in an alley. Wren watched while Robin entered the codes when a bright light enfolded them and then they were gone.
Opening their eyes the twins looked around, this was some place very different and also an amazing place for them to explore. Without words they looked at one another and smiled, with a soft cackle they took off down the white hallways. They stopped only to wire into the nearest monitor in order to plug in and get some information on the place and maybe whoever was around. They wanted to have fun and explore but they didn't want to have someone after them or telling Bruce what they had done.
"So who are we avoiding?" Wren whispered looking down the hall.
"Wonder Woman, Superman, Black Canary, and Red Tornado are he only ones here." Robin answered grinning. "From what I can tell they're all in the same room so we're good to go right now."
"Then let's get started."
Moving quietly they split up, Robin took to the air ducts while Wren slowly made her way down the corridors. Neither spoke as they explored only ever having seen the layout on a monitor for a few seconds when Bruce was out and trying not to get caught. Hearing voiced the girl ducked into the nearest room and just smiled seeing all the computers that surrounded her. Even though she wasn't as skilled as her brother in hacking but she could have fun with all this in her hands.
Robin meanwhile crouched crouched in an airduct above the main room of the Tower looking down on Black Canary and Wonder Woman. He grinned knowing that the only way he would be spotted was if Superman came in and looked up at the ceiling. He couldn't exactly hear what was being said but the amount of data he was getting from his hack was very interesting. Though he'd have to sift through it all later with Wren's help though she probably had information of her own to go through.
He jumped suddenly what everything dimmed to red and a voice said, "Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!"
Unplugging from where he was he watched as Black Canary and Wonder Woman were quickly joined by Superman and Red Tornado. He turned to backtrack through the ducts and find Wren quick so that they could play one more trick before heading back to Gotham. They didn't need to get caught right then and have all their plans ruined just because one of them triggered an alarm (Wren!).
"Hey Rob um I think I took a wrong turn somewhere." came Wren's voice over their comm.
"Find a secure place I'll find you." he told her with a chuckle.
"Already done though somehow Wonder Woman is already here."
"Got it. We'll be gone soon enough."
Falling silent, the Boy Wonder crawled through the ducts mapping the way while trying to figure out a way to get to Wren. He could feel his heart beating in his chest now that their little exploration had been cut short and League members were searching for them. Well not them but looking for something dangerous in their base although they were both being trained still to be able to handle members of the Justice League if needed.
"Rob, I'm in the ducts now." Wren whispered in the comm. "Black Canary and Wonder Woman left. Gave me a chance to get through."
"Good now let's go." Robin told her. "Superman's really the only one we need to worry about."
"Got it."
Robin shook his head hearing the sarcasm in her voice as he made his way back toward where they had come in from. Moving quickly he found himself back where they had separated and frowned when he noticed Red Tornado standing guard.
"RT seems to have thought of something." Wren whispered crouching beside him. "What should we do?"
"Smoke them EMP." Robin answered without hesitation. "Small one just to stun until we're away. Too big and we risk damaging our escape."
"I'll smoke you EMP."
"Alright on your mark."
"Go."
He threw the small EMP just as the smoke pellets went off then moved running through the grey and into the portal. Laughter echoed through the alley as the twins stumbled through the telephone booth then took off heading back toward where they stashed their bikes.
"Did you plant the surprise?" Wren asked once they calmed some.
"Of course." Robin answered stopping on top of a building. "Just finished when someone set off an alarm."
"I was distracted."
"Like usual."
"Hey not fair."
Robin stuck his tongue out, jumping away from his sister who threw herself at him with a laugh before running away from her. Wren chased after him with a frown neither paying attention to where they were going across the buildings. Tumbling to the ground, Wren caught Robin in an empty lot far outside their normal patrol and far from where Bruce would let them go.
"Rob, where are we?" Wren asked looking around. "None of this looks familiar."
Robin stopped laughing taking in their surroundings eyes widening behind his mask as he realized where they were.
"Wren, we got to go." he said getting to his feet.
"Why?" she asked slightly confused.
"Red Zone."
"Bats is seriously going to kill us."
"Not if we leave now. He'll never know."
"He'll know. Maybe not now but soon."
"Right."
They turned heading back toward the buildings, feeling as though they would be safer on the rooftops once more. Just as they made it to a safe enough place to begin their climb, Wren cried out falling hard onto the ground.
"Wren?!" Robin shouted turning to find a woman in red and black holding a giant hammer.
"Who?" she asked with a grin.
He wasn't able to continue as the hammer descended upon him, the last thing he heard was a psychoatic laugh from somewhere above him.
