A new family

Klaus/ Adalind

For a baby girl's safety's sequel

The Originals: everything is sorted, Esther, Mikeal and Dahlia are dead, they're all at peace together and Cami, well, she doesn't exist because I don't want her in this story. Sorry. Just imagine that she left town or something.

In Portland, Nick Burkhardt had no idea that Adalind was preparing her revenge against him and was planning to take his Grimm powers away for the Royal family when he called her and asked her to meet him, a couple of days before Monroe's wedding. He had already informed Captain Renard of everything and now it was time for Adalind to finally find out the truth.

"What do you want Nick? Are you finally going to help me get my daughter back? Did you change your mind?" Adalind asked him as soon as he opened the door.

"Come in, Adalind. It's time I told you the truth. Your daughter isn't with the Royals, or the Resistance. We couldn't tell you sooner because you were being watched and the royals had to think that you had no clue of your daughter's whereabouts. Your pain and anger had to be believable. Sean did give her to the Royals, and she stayed with them long enough to arrive to their plane. There, we pretended to be the Resistance and took her back. The resistance thinks that the royals have her and the royals think that the resistance have her. But none of them do, my mother does. She's keeping her safe and just informed me that she's found a safe place where you could be with your daughter. Somewhere the royals would never find you and where you'd both be protected. She's been there for a couple of weeks now and waited to be sure it was safe and that she could trust her hosts." Nick explained, trying to fit as many information as possible in her head.

"Does Sean know?" Adalind asked, a spark of hope shining in her eyes.

"Yes, I told him earlier today. He's staying here but will visit Diana next time he has a vacation, maybe on the weekend too." Nick nodded.

"Where is she? Who are these hosts?" Adalind asked.

"New Orleans, the French Quarters. It's filled with Wesen, but especially vampires. A couple of weeks after leaving here, my mother ran into an Original Vampire named Rebekah Mickealson, who was on the run with her niece to protect her. Apparently, people wanted that baby too. It's a long story you'll probably learn once you're there. Anyway, Klaus, Rebekah's brother and the baby's father, called to let his sister know that it was safe again to bring his daughter back. His daughter, Hope, seems to be very attached to your daughter Diana. My mother told me that it had been instantaneous and that they're much stronger together. Inseparable, they protect each other. She followed Rebekah and has been there for a couple of weeks."

"Why didn't you tell me sooner?" She asked him.

"My mother wanted me to wait until she was sure that it was safe. Now she does. Klaus, Hope's father, is inviting you to join them. You'd live with his family and him, with your daughter. Apparently it would be unwise to separate the two girls and I think you'll agree that the more people to protect and defend your daughter, the better, especially considering everyone that's after her." Nick replied.

"Will your mother stay there as well?"

"No, she might wait for a couple of days after you arrived but she'll come back here. Though I wouldn't be surprised if she dropped by for a visit once in a while, I think she grew very attached to your daughter." Nick told her with a kind smile.

"Or she might pressure you to give her grandchildren." Adalind chuckled naturally.

"I wouldn't be surprised if the subject was brought up once she comes back." Nick replied, wondering if he'd be interrupted next time he tried to propose to Juliette.

"Why are you being so nice?" Adalind asked him.

"Everyone deserves a second chance, even I know that. We didn't mean to hurt you, you know. Just to protect your daughter, keep her safe. She deserves to grow up free of any influence, to become her own person and be free to decide whose side she wants to fight on, if she wants to fight at all. Now she can."

"Thank you. What do you know of these Original vampires? I've heard stories but it wasn't exactly the kind of stories that lead to think they'd be the sort to settle down with a family." Adalind told him.

"I know that their mother was a powerful Hexenbiest, so is their aunt, that they believed dead but isn't. They recently reunited with their long lost sister, who was with their aunt. Also an Hexenbiest. I know that my mother trusts them, which means a lot because she doesn't trust anyone. They welcomed your daughter as though she was Hope's sister, they're dedicated to protect her with the same fierceness as Hope. I don't know much of their history but I don't think it matters much. Everyone can change and you'll probably learn everything you need to know once you're there."

"You're right."

"Hope and Diana have both been prophecised to change the world, to bring a revolution. I don't know when it will be or what they'll do, but keeping them together, safe and loved is probably the best bet." Nick advised.

"What would you do if you were in my place?" Adalind asked him, surprising the Grimm.

"The Royals will never step foot in New Orleans, not if they don't want to die and the Mickealson are a strong family and definitely capable of keeping your daughter safe, with or without you. But I think it's safe for you to go and be with Diana. If it wasn't, my mother wouldn't have told me where she was. I don't really know why the Royals don't go to New Orleans, though. Mom told me that it was an old story, part of history and that Klaus himself drove them away when he first moved into town over a century ago." Nick replied.

"Viktor told me that he had Diana when I called him. He said he'd let me raise her in the castle if I did something for him and took your powers away. I almost have everything I need to do it... It's something only I can do because I have my Hexenbiest powers and your blood inside me... He lied to me but he'll be watching me and my moves." Adalind revealed.

"Can't you pretend the pain of being without Diana is too much for you to handle, that you took some kind of potion or spell to forget about her and move on? Or we all work together to pretend you attacked like you promised the royals and we attacked back but in the process, you didn't die, you lost your memories." Nick suggested.

"That could work..." Adalind nodded and they started talking strategy.

Adalind would send her few possessions and everything she had inherited from her mother ahead. It would arrive before she did and she'd be able to travel light.

They managed to execute their plan in a very believable way and so, on the morning of Monroe's wedding, Adalind left town, heading towards her beloved daughter with the promise to keep in touch and tell them how she and her daughter were doing. Sean, on his part, promised to visit as soon as he could, while Adalind promised to send him videos of Diana on a secured phone he had.

.

Adalind arrived at the address Kelly had sent her around 11 pm and the Quarters were still full of life. She could see witches and vampires along with humans and other wesen walking about the streets. She could hear music, laughter and chatter. As soon as she entered the city, she felt happier, more relaxed and she didn't know if it was because she was getting closer to her daughter or of her surroundings. Either way, she liked it. She felt home already.

Her cab parked in front of an ancient looking house and Adalind recognized Kelly standing in front of it, ready to welcome her and guide her inside to the Mickealson and her daughter. Her hexenbiest half could sense all of the protection spells that had been placed around the house and it reassured her. They didn't rely on their abilities alone but they also protected the girls with magic. It was a good thing.

"Adalind, good to see you." Kelly greeted her.

"Thank you for keeping Diana safe. I... I just want you to know that I'm not angry that you killed my mother. If I hadn't gone after Juliette, you wouldn't have had to do it. I understand and I'm thankful for what you did for my daughter." Adalind told Kelly before she hugged her to thank her for taking care of Diana.

"Let me introduce you to your hosts. You have Finn, Freya, Elijah, Klaus, Kol, Rebekah, Hayley, Marcel and Davina. Hope and Diana are sleeping. You'll see that it's amazing how they manage to bring people together and erase grudges." Kelly said with a smile.

Adalind greeted each one of them and then she followed Hayley and Klaus to the girls' room.

"At first we gave Diana her own room but after three nights of her floating her way to Hope's bedroom or Hope floating her way into Diana's room, we gave up and let them share the bedroom." Hayley informed Adalind with an amused smile and the Hexenbiest easily believed it, having seen her daughter's powers early on.

"Kelly wasn't kidding, they really are inseparable." Adalind whispered when she saw the two baby girls sleeping peacefully, holding each other's hand.

"That they are. We tried separating them once, just place them in separate rooms for a few hours. Not something we're willing to do again, not without them wanting it anyway." Klaus smiled.

"Yeah, they blasted a door and broke quite a few windows." Hayley added.

"What's this bracelet that she's wearing?" Adalind asked curiously when she noticed that Hope had the same one.

"Kol and Davina made it for them. It shields their powers from anyone who could look for them and wish them harm." Klaus explained with a smile.

"Oh. Thank you." She replied.

"Come, I'll show you to your room. We put all of your mother's Hexenbiest belonging in a private room downstairs, next to my sister's magic room. You'll be free to put it with hers or keep it in yours." Klaus added as they walked in the corridors.

"She can use it if she wants. I haven't looked at it all but I know that my mother had some very ancient and powerful books. As long as I'm going to be staying here, we should share what we have and can do, it will keep the girls safe." Adalind smiled.

"That it will." Klaus nodded before he showed her to her bedroom.

"I'll give you a quick tour of the rest of the house and you'll be able to settle down. We'll show you the town and tell you everything you need to know tomorrow." Klaus told her.

"Thank you, really. You didn't have to welcome my daughter here. I'm grateful that you did, I can see that you did everything in your power to keep her safe." She told Klaus.

"It would have been risking my daughter's wrath to try and separate them." Klaus chuckled.

"You seem to have a very powerful and united family around you." She noticed.

"It didn't use to be this way. We were always fighting and arguing. Marcel was working against me along with Davina but as soon as Hope and Diana arrived, it solved itself. We settled our differences, apologized when we needed to, made peace and worked together, not because we had something to gain of it but because we were family. I don't know how they did it, but I'm sure they did in some way. Diana is one of us as much as Hope is. Don't worry, we'll protect her from the Royals, the Verrat or anyone that could want her. You'll be welcome here as long as you want to stay. If you want to be one of us, you will be." Klaus replied honestly with a kindness that very few had seen in him.

Later that night, Kelly went to see Adalind and they spoke a while.

"I'm going to go and see my son tomorrow. But, please, don't cut me out of her life, I love her. I'd like to see her again." Kelly told Adalind.

"Well, every little girl needs a loving grandmother and seeing as my mother is dead and Sean's is impossible to track down..." Adalind smiled.

"Thank you. If you ever need anything, don't hesitate to call me, I'll always come to help Diana."

"Thank you. Are you sure you don't want to stay a few more days?" Adalind asked her.

"No, I haven't seen my son much since I told him I was alive a few years ago. I need to spend some time with him. Maybe convince him to give me a few grandchildren of his own. After all, we've got to keep the Grimm bloodline going, don't we?" Kelly replied with a smile.

"He's going to love that." Adalind chuckled.

.

The next morning, Adalind woke up early and was greeted by Hayley, who was about to get the girls up with Rebekah. They let the mother reunite with her daughter before they all got breakfast downstairs. Adalind was able to get to know everyone and she was happy to witness how at ease her daughter was with everyone. She seemed to especially love fooling around with Kol and Davina. The two girls did magic at the table and everyone acted like it was the norm around the house, like seeing a piece of pancake fly from Elijah's plate to Marcel's just when he was about to eat it was normal.

"Don't worry, you'll get used to it soon enough." Klaus told her softly before he sat by her side.

"She just seems so happy here... It's like there isn't several families trying to get their hands on her." Adalind whispered back, knowing he'd hear her well.

"Here, there isn't. She knows that she's safe." He replied.

"They'll never touch her, she's one of us." Kol added.

"Royals haven't stepped foot in this town in over a hundred years, they're too afraid of us." Marcel added reassuringly.

"But what if they send their spies?" Adalind asked.

"We have a lot of informants everywhere. We'd know they were coming before they entered our city. Don't worry." Marcel added.

"I just hope that the fact she carries royal blood won't be something they can use against her."

"They won't, I've researched it. I'll show you what I've found later if you want." Freya offered and Adalind replied with a smile and a nod.

"Thank you. I'm not used to people giving me a chance and helping me without me doing anything in exchange." Adalind confessed.

"Neither are we. We're all changing for the better." Finn smiled.

.

The next few days went by pretty well for Adalind, who was having a hard time believing that this was all real.

She was truly welcomed here and they didn't expect anything of her. She befriended them all and got along especially well with Klaus and Freya. She talked a while with Rebekah and the young woman seemed bored, desperate for her own family or at least for some novelty, for a life of her own. It took her a few weeks before she managed to tell the family that she wanted to get away for a while and Adalind, wanting to help, suggested that she went in Portland. She'd be able to bring news of Diana to Sean and to visit Kelly and maybe she'd make some new friends there. Rebekah thought it was a great idea, she did miss Kelly a lot, and so she packed her bags and left her family, on good terms, and with the promise to see them again soon and to come back a soon as they needed her.

Adalind was able to bond with her daughter, to spend some time alone with her and to see her with Hope. She even went to the park with the girls and Klaus while Hayley went with Elijah in the woods to do something together regarding the few remaining members of her pack.

"This is nice, it feels so normal..." Adalind told Klaus as they walked side by side, pushing the strollers.

"I know, I never dreamt that I could have this in my life and now this little girl next to Diana is my whole world." Klaus nodded.

"It's hard to believe that anyone could want either of them harmed." She nodded back.

"They won't touch either of them, believe me." he smiled.

"I do." Adalind smiled back, feeling something slowly growing between her and the Original hybrid.

It was hard not to notice that Klaus went out of his way to spend time with her and it got her thinking about his motivations. Apparently, he just liked her and at first she thought that he was doing this to ensure that she stayed here with her daughter but she soon realized that he seemed to truly like her. She was surprised to realize that she truly liked him too, that she could see a happy and peaceful future with him here.

.

Back in Portland, Kelly had found a small house in the same street as her son and she moved in, soon joined by Rebekah. Rebekah was quickly introduced to Nick, Juliette and their friends and she soon found her place in the group, helping when she could and spending a lot of time with either Juliette or Rosalee during the day. She made friends and realized that she could be happy there.

That day, a little over a year after she arrived in town, Rebekah was at Rosalee's shop with her. They were unpacking orders when two boys came in. One of them tried to steal some herbs and Rebekah quickly used her compulsion power to get them to tell her the truth, which they did. They told her that there was 4 of them, 3 boys and a girl. They were scared, unwelcome in the system because they turned into monsters. They obviously didn't know who they were and, worst of all, one of them was sick. Saddened, Rebekah went with the two boys to their made up house in the woods. There, she told them who she was and what they were.

They didn't have any idea of what a wesen was and so she told them. She even told them about Grimms, about her family and about living with Kelly, a Grimm that was nice, just like her son. Rebekah also gave the girl, Lilly, a few drops of her blood to drink so she'd heal.

"What's going to happen to us now?" Peter, the boy who seemed to be in charge, asked her.

"Well, you can't stay here, you'll end up dying and it's wrong of you to force people into being with you. Although I agree that you can't go back into the system. Why don't you come home with me? I'll talk with Kelly and if she doesn't agree, then we'll move into our own house. I can use my power to make sure I have legally your custody and we'll be a family." The vampire offered.

"A family? All 5 of us?" Lilly asked with an hopeful smile.

"All 6 of us if Kelly agrees. Now I'm going to step out and make a few phone calls to arrange everything, why don't you talk it out between you? I don't want you to feel forced into anything." Rebekah told them kindly before she took her cellphone in her hand and walked out, decided to call Kelly to ask her if she agreed, Nick to ask him to tell her who she needed to compel to make this happen and her brothers, to inform them of this new development in her life.

The four children walked out of their shelter just as Rebekah was finishing off with her family:

"Of course. They'll have to go to school but we'll visit during the next school break. I have a feeling you'll all love them. Bye." Rebekah hung up her phone and turned around to see the children smiling at her, each with a very small bag in their hands.

"We've decided to come with you. We want to be a family." Peter said.

"That makes me very happy. Kelly agreed as well." Rebekah replied, hugging them all.

"What will she be to us?" Lilly asked.

"I'm not sure, probably like an aunt. We won't be staying with her too long though. The house was fine for just the two of us but we only have one guest room and you all need your own bedrooms. I'll start looking for a new house for the 5 of us tomorrow."

"With a garden?" Lilly asked, excited.

"Of course, we might even get a swimming pool and a swing set." Rebekah replied.

"And a dog?" Big John asked her in a small voice.

"That's something we'll have to talk about later, but why not." Rebekah smiled.

.

A little over a year after she had arrived in New Orleans, Adalind was getting ready for a date that was making her extremely nervous. She had grown very close to Klaus and started developing feelings for him but learning that he, too, felt it was something else. When he asked her out, her first instinct had been to refuse in order to protect their relationships and their girls but he had convinced her that they would work and that, even if they didn't work out romantically, they'd be able to stay friends.

"Don't worry so much Adalind. Diana will be fine tonight. You watch over her when I go out with Elijah, it's only normal that I, too, watch over her when you're going on a date of your own. And I have a feeling that you and Klaus will be perfect together." Hayley, who had grown to be a great friend to Adalind, reassured her.

"Thank you." Adalind smiled, zipping up her dress and deciding on which necklace she should wear.

All in all, Adalind had been nervous for no reasons. Their evening together went very well, Klaus put her at ease and made sure she was comfortable the entire time. They went in a nice restaurant, then they took a walk through the town and it was very nice and romantic, even though pretty simple. It didn't feel like a first date, it felt like they had been on dates like this several times before. They naturally held hands and when they went back home, they exchange a nice and steamy kiss in front of her bedroom, with the promise of more for later.

.

In Portland, Rebekah had found a bigger house for her new family and she was happy that it was not far from Nick and Kelly's houses. The 4 kids went out of their way to make sure everything went well. They did their best in school, tried not to get into fights or not to argue together. They really wanted this to work and so far it did.

"Mom, what are we going to do this summer?" Lilly asked her one evening.

"Well, I want you all to meet my brothers, your uncles, and my sister, your aunt, so we're going to go to New Orleans. I don't know how long we'll stay there, I guess it depends on everyone. But after that, maybe we can go to Disney World for a weekend or something. We'll decide on this once we're in New Orleans." Rebekah replied, loving that they took so quickly to calling her 'mom'.

"Are they going to accept us?" John asked shyly.

"Of course they are." Rebekah smiled reassuringly.

She had spoken with so much confidence that they couldn't help but believe her.

Time passed rather quickly for everyone and, before they knew it, summer was here and Rebekah was packing the car to drive them all to New Orleans. She knew that it would be a long way but she wanted to make a road trip out of it and she had planned a lot of stops for them to see special things along the way. She wanted them to have fun and remember this as the best summer vacation they had ever had.

.

When Rebekah and her adoptive children finally arrived in New Orleans, the children were nervous, afraid of being rejected. It was late afternoon when she finally parked her car in front of the family house and they were soon greeted by the entire family. It was a lot of people but Rebekah had warned the kids, they knew how many people would be meeting them, they had expected it.

"Rebekah! We've all missed you!" Freya exclaimed before she hugged her sister.

"I've missed you all too. Come kids, don't be scared, I promise, they're nice." Rebekah told the children.

Lilly held onto Rebekah's hand while the 3 boys stood behind the two of them. Peter was the first one to come out from behind her and to introduce himself. Soon, he was followed by the other 3. It took a while for the introductions to be done but, once it was done, everyone seemed happy.

"Unfortunately, we don't have enough room to give you each your own. Lilly and Rebekah will have to share and the boys will have to share one as well." Elijah informed them.

"Don't worry, it's not a problem. It'll be fun." Rebekah nodded.

"Why don't I take my nephews to their room while you show Lilly to yours. We'll take care of the bags." Kol suggested, wanting to show the boys that they were family.

Rebekah smiled thankfully to her brother and nodded while her boys looked very happy about this acceptance. They couldn't help but be a part of this big family where everyone was just as special as they were.

Rebekah had kept in touch with her family, so she knew about the relationship that had developed between Adalind and Klaus, she couldn't be happier for her brother. They were all a weird family, but they were a family none the less. She was pretty sure that Adalind would eventually become a vampire to spend forever with Klaus and that they'd have more children together before that.

.

That evening, the Mickealson family had a small welcome home party for Rebekah and her adopted children. They all had fun and realized that there was no discussion about whether or not they were good enough to be a part of this family. They were a part of this family, accepted members of the Mickealson family. To make sure they understood it, Elijah, Klaus, Kol and Freya gave them all a medallion with their family crest on it on one side and, on the other, their name and the date Rebekah had adopted them.

When she saw that the kids could barely stay awake, Rebekah took them to their bedroom, spending a few minutes with each of them and promising them that they'd stay in New Orleans all summer if they wanted, that they didn't have to worry.

"Good night, mom. Thank you." Lilly whispered to her when it was her turn to be put to bed.

"Why are you thanking me, sweetheart?"

"Because you gave us a family. We're happy now, we're loved." Lilly replied.

"Well, then I should thank you as well because you gave me a family too and you make me very happy. You're giving me the opportunity to be a mother, something I didn't think was possible for me." Rebekah told her.

"Why aren't you with Marcel?" Lilly asked her.

"What do you mean?" Rebekah asked her, wondering how the little girl could possibly know anything about them.

"He looks at you like you're the only woman in the room, he loves you. Uncle Kol said that it was complicated but Davina said that she believed you both still loved each other... he could become our father."

"I... Your uncle Kol was right, it's complicated. Marcel and I... We have a long and complicated history."

"But you still love him?"

"Of course I do." Rebekah smiled.

"Maybe he'll be our father soon." Lilly whispered as she drifted off to sleep.

Smiling, Rebekah left the bedroom and, on her way to the living room, she crossed Klaus who was leaving Hope and Diana's bedroom.

"All our children are asleep, I guess it time for the grown up party to begin." he joked.

"They're happy... They were afraid of being rejected... Thank you for welcoming them so openly." She told her brother.

"They're family. We're all happy for you, sister. It was time you found what makes you happy." Klaus told her sincerely.

"I... I'm happy for you too. Adalind is perfect for you. You make a great couple and I'm sure the two of you will be more than happy together in the long run."

"Thanks sister. Now come, let's join the others."

When she got back in the party room, Rebekah couldn't help but to glance at Marcel and it allowed her to notice that he was staring at her. Was Lilly right? Did Marcel really still love her? Would he be willing to move to Portland with her and to be a father figure to her adopted children? Wasn't it too late for them?

"They seem really attached to you." Marcel told her a little later that evening, joining her outside.

"The kids?" She asked him.

"Yes. It's obvious that they love you a lot."

"I love them too." She smiled.

"Are you happy, Rebekah? Do you finally have everything you've ever wanted?" Marcel asked her seriously.

"I am happy, but I wouldn't say that I have everything I've ever wanted. You and I both know that I could be happier." She replied, not looking at him but knowing that he'd understand what she was talking about.

"Isn't it too late for that?" he asked her.

"I don't think it's ever too late for anything to happen as long as we want it to happen." she replied, looking at him sincerely.

"Let's say that we give us another try, how would it work?" he asked her.

"Well, I know that I don't mind staying here all summer if the kids want it but we'll have to get back to Portland before school starts again. The rest depends on you. You have to understand though that if you want us to be together again, you'd have to be ready to be a father figure to the 4 of them." Rebekah told him.

"I got that." he nodded.

"I... I really want this Marcel, I do. But my children have to be my priority now. You have to think about this because you can't just be with me. If you're with me, if you're in my life, then you're in their lives too." Rebekah insisted.

"I don't think I would mind." he smiled at her.

"Take your time, Marcel. You'd have to be sure. Don't give me an answer right away, think about it for a while." Rebekah told him before she kissed his lips softly and went back inside to spend time with her sister.

.

The next few days were spent in peace and happiness. Rebekah and her children enjoyed being with their family and she showed the town to her kids. Marcel also spent more time with them, taking this as a trial period. If the 4 children accepted him in their life, as a father figure, then he'd go back to Portland with Rebekah, he'd be with her. He wasn't really needed in New Orleans anymore anyway. Klaus was fine on his own, he had Adalind now and he even overheard them speaking of eventually having more children together.

To get to know the children better, he also spent time with them on his own, proving that he could be a good father figure and that he could be good for them too. When Rebekah decided to go to Disney World with her children, Marcel decided to come along, to be a part of their family and, when they came back to New Orleans to finish the summer, he started packing, knowing that he didn't want to be apart from Rebekah anymore and that he was ready to be a father to these children.

.

A few months after Rebekah and her new family got back to Portland, she got news from Klaus that not only he was now a couple with Adalind, but they'd try to have a child together. A few more months later, they announced that they were expecting twins. A boy they'd name Ansel and a girl they'd name Catherine after respectively his father and her mother.

When Hope and Diana were 7 years old, 3 men, wesen, working for the Royals, tried to kidnap the girls. Of course the parents worried at first and started doing spells and assembling people to look for the girls but, 5 hours after he took them, he ended up calling and, instead of asking for money or power or something else, he begged the parents to come and pick up the girls as soon as they could. When they arrived, the parents didn't know if they should be amused or worried but the girls had taken care of defending themselves but using their powers on their kidnappers. The three men were on the floor, obviously having been tortured a while.

"Well, at least nobody will try that again." Klaus commented to his family, amused.

"We should have known not to be worried." Kol chuckled.

"They did know how to handle themselves." Hayley nodded, happy that her daughter was safe once more.

While the adults were commenting, the girls were in their bedroom, sleeping off their eventful day while Adalind made sure her twins were sleeping as well.

I hope you liked it. I know it could have been longer, but I wasn't inspired enough to make the end longer. Maybe later, who knows?

Review please?
