Chapter 13: A Long Road Ahead
-The first steps on a journey just started and already fate conspires to end it.-
-Yu no Kuni (Hot Spring Country), Time: 1217-
Zikito and his companion, Xevhiroth, walked side by side down the dirt road that a sign said led to a town only 3 kilometers away but it didn't specify an actual direction. So Zikito simply pointed down one path and started down it, only to find that the pathway veered left and right, making the journey a mix of small forests, rolling hills, and finally, a small lake that the pair found themselves at. It had been a little over a week and a half since the two decided to partner up and though Zikito hadn't really grown to dislike him, he still had some doubt as to how this partnership would work out.
This Uchiha had not been anything like the Uchiha mentioned in the text concerning them during the last Ninja War, but Zikito could chalk that up to 'not all are the same as one' category. Indeed, other than his Sharingan, he was like every other person; unique in how he carried himself. Though he still wore the Uchiha armor, with their symbol embossed on his back. You'd think that a member of the Uchiha clan, them being as hated as they are, would be a little more covert but not him. He wore that armor without a care in the world and no regard for any who saw it. But he did have something working for him that he was blatantly unaware of: Most of the world believed that the Uchiha were dead. So anyone wearing their armor or clothing was mostly likely someone who acquired it and wore it because it offered protection, which his did or because it fit their body.
Zikito decided to put the thought behind him, as it was irrelevant. Because, other than their summoning animals, the only living things that the two met along their journey thus far were the old couple that ran a tea shop they had spent time at earlier in the morning. Though the lack of confrontation was a relief to be sure, it was an uncertain something he felt in the lack of people that made Zikito weary. That and Xevhiroth was slightly too talkative for his own good, often commenting on the smallest thing from the environment to the state of affairs elsewhere and even about their respective choices of what to eat in the morning. Zikito didn't mind in the slightest, because the most off kilter thing about him was just how Xevhiroth acted. His walking manner was a mix of 'eagle-eye vigilance' and careless fool in the same moment, as evident by his walk changing from a carefree walk to a stance of active readiness. His words were a mix of simplicity and acute intelligence, often in the same sentence. And of course his Sharingan, those crimson red eyes seemed to be polar opposite when compared of the man behind them, either a smile or natural expression held his face whenever Zikito saw the Sharingan active.
'Mass of contradictions this one.'
Still walking alongside the lake, Zikito slowly came to a stop. He had wanted to take a small rest near the lake, so he lightly tapped on Xevhiroth's armor to gain his attention.
"What is it?" Xevhiroth asked as he looked at Zikito, Sharingan active in both eyes.
"Let's take a quick break here for a bit."
"Sure."
XxX
-45 minutes later-
Their rest by the lake had been a welcome comfort. The shining crystal clear water, combined with the clear blue sky, rolling green hills that stretched as far the eye could discern and the call of wild birds, including Aquila, filled the air around both him and Zikito. Zikito had questioned why he had summoned her here, Xevhiroth satisfied him with telling him that 'she often needed to stretch her wings.'
This wasn't entirely untrue, Aquila didn't mind being summoned to soar along with her brethren in the open skies and her calls added something to the quietness that relaxed Xevhiroth a great deal. However that wasn't the only reason he summoned her; though she detested being summoned for the purpose of combat, she didn't mind recon duty.
So, while Xevhiroth and Zikito relaxed along the lakeside, Aquila flew high into the air and looked far and wide around their surroundings. When time came to move on, she told Xevhiroth everything she saw or lack thereof. Which led to this point, the two having resumed their course along the road they'd been on for some time. Xevhiroth hadn't been sure about Zikito's sense of direction when their path didn't lead them to the town as indicated by the sign they saw a ways back. Now, thanks to Aquila's recon, he could say it for certain:
Zikito had no idea where he was going.
Aquila had been asked to fly at the same height as the other raptors, but from no matter which direction she looked, she only saw grasslands and forests as far as she could see. He may have been this ANBU commander in Kiri, been hunted down by that group Unity… but, for some reason, he couldn't navigate. Xevhiroth had patiently been following Zikito since he let him decide where the duo would head off to first but now he just had to know something.
"Do you know where we are going?" he asked.
A few seconds of silence passed between before he finally got a response.
"Yes, I do." Zikito replied.
"Okay, where then?"
"To find Unity."
Xevhiroth wanted to say something witty to his response but held off.
"Obviously. But do have an actual location on the docket?" he asked. To which he got no reply.
"You have no idea where we are going, do you?"
"Of course I do."
"Oh is it called 'I have no clue?' cause I'm sure that's where we are."
This time Zikito actually turned around to call him out on it as the pair reached a small hill.
"Listen-"
He started but stopped as he pointed off in the distance-
"Look."
Turning 180 degrees, Xevhiroth looked in the direction Zikito was pointing at. A moderate sized village, nestled in the rolling hills, almost hidden from view and thanks to Zikito's bad sense of direction, they had almost bypassed the town entirely.
"See?" Zikito said. "We are nearing that village, just as I've been doing."
Xevhiroth merely sighed and began removing his armor.
"What are you doing?" Zikito asked, a hint of apprehension in his voice. Xevhiroth looked at him with an expression of reason.
"We're both wanted men and my armor attracts attention, so I'm removing the problem." He said, and Zikito decided to follow suit by removing and sealing his scythe in a weapon scroll and using another to summon a pair of hooded cloaks. Donning them, they proceeded towards the town.
XxX
-Unknown Village, Yu no Kuni, time: 1400-
The village was nestled in-between a moderate forest to the East and North with a series of hills that rolled on for well over several kilometers to the West. So the only way that this town was clearly visible was from the South on its main road, which had been Zikito's goal all along. He had been well traveled during his days as a Jonin and had been loaned to Konoha for well over two years, and had been to many smaller villages and hamlets not just in Hi no Kuni but the surrounding countries as well, including this one. His platoon had been stationed here for a week during a joint mission and this village was one he had no idea that had existed here.
Before being loaned to the Hidden Leaf, Zikito had studied many maps of not just Hi no Kuni, but of the other nations surrounding it, and the one of Yu no Kuni had not made any reference to a village at these coordinates. He later found out that the map he had used was over six years old and this village was established five years ago. So he had no idea such a place existed. The village was small when compared to Konoha but for the villages that existed within Yu no Kuni, it was about the fourth largest in the country. It contained many stores, resorts, inns, and everything a resort country like Yu no Kuni would need to thrive.
Zikito walked cautiously but casually through the streets as Xevhiroth walked only two steps behind. The pair had concealed themselves in similar but different fashions, Zikito had used a simple red scarf to cover his face while Xevhiroth used a spare cloak with a high collar, but both had a straw hat on with white streamers around the sides and back. Being the taller of the two, Zikito stood above Xevhiroth by half a head but was certain that Xevhiroth's presence was more off-putting than his own. Merely looking like someone who hated the sun, Zikito walked somewhat quickly through the streets and the mass of people.
Yet most took a bigger detour when moving out of Xevhiroth's path as his attire looked like someone who did not want to be bothered. Zikito wanted to tell him to remove his hat but refrained from doing so, because it being so close to Hi no Kuni, the Hot Springs Country was often visited by ninja of the Hidden Leaf. In fact, on their way in a squad of ninja from that very village, as well as a few others, was just arriving. So, the hat was a necessary evil to allow the two to traverse the town, in some measure of subtlety.
'At least we're not wearing black cloaks with red clouds.'
Zikito kept a slow pace, merely looking at all that was around his view, from the dozens of shops, bars, and bathes; all had some customers going in and out but he ignored these. Many ninja from nearby countries on leave or vacation regularly walked this street in particular, for reasons which escaped him as there was a bar or tavern on every other street along with everything else one could want. Even when his squad came to this town most made their way to this street. He didn't bother to go with them, because he was too concerned with transcribing the events that had taken on the assignment that had led his group to this town to have fun.
'And now is definitely not the time to indulge my curiosity.'
Zikito looked to his left, his partner Xevhiroth, walked next to him. His eyes reflecting only a stern expression, which combined with his attire, would have made almost anybody want to not be on this man's bad side.
"Which inn are we going towards?" Xevhiroth asked, his eyes not deviating from where they were already set on.
"There's one not too far from here, out of the way and not many eyes look upon it. Better we stay there, out of sight just in case." Zikito answered his stoic friend. His hand dropped to his wallet, he remembered he had some ryō for at least a day or two's worth of-
Stop
Zikito stopped walking as he spotted a familiar action followed by a familiar sound-
Roll
-of dice rolling on a flat surface. Zikito looked around and saw the source: A man sitting on a stool, an overturned cup concealing a pair of dice; a classic shell game. Zikito felt an urge as he saw the game-runner lift the cup up to reveal the die, much to the disappointment of the mark, whose money was quickly scooped up. Watching the man get up and walk away, Zikito's legs told him to walk towards the table, sit down, and place a bet.
-Step-
Zikito's line of sight was suddenly broken as a straw hat suddenly blocked his view and path. Xevhiroth now stood in front of him, his eyes simply armed with an incredulous look.
"Shall I look after it for you?" He asked, pointing at Zikito's wallet, the only source of money between them.
"No, no." Zikito answered, taking his hand away from his wallet.
Xevhiroth cast a wayward glance to the table and back at Zikito.
"Don't give it away here."
*Ahem*
Zikito cleared his throat and quickly moved on through the crowd, doing his best to appear nonchalant and composed but he could not stop himself from looking back at the shell game. There was a slight look of embarrassment on his face. He couldn't believe how easily it was for him to fall back into a lifestyle that led to some tense moments with his family, nearly gotten him relieved of duty more than once, and was something he had finally put behind him…or so he believed. Zikito suffered from Ludomania or to put it simple terms, he was a compulsive gambler, though now he could manage and control his impulses. This wasn't the case when he was younger, a mere 9 years prior, it was a much different story. Though he was only 14 at that time having just made the rank of Jonin, he found himself stuck at tables and gambling halls, burning through his pay and allowances to feed his addiction spending both mass quantities of his time and money on gambling. He remembered the chewing out his parents gave him when he returned home after he couldn't cover his losses and was promptly beaten. This pattern got worse over time, as he often needed to pay off loan sharks and his fellow Jonin to continue gambling, so he often asked his parents for money or if all else failed he stole it from his siblings.
Even on missions, his urge proved a great liability, taking too much time at shell games, slowing down the team and nearly compromising the mission. Eventually he sought help and kicked the habit to a degree to where he would gamble for a time every month and a half or so. That is, until Mao ordered all gambling facilities closed and his only means to feed his vice came to an end. He knew his sister was doing it only to ensure that he didn't blow the entire Kiri ANBU spending budget on his habit, but she should have been a least a bit subtle about her reasons for it. But now was not the time to dwell on it and it was definitely not the time to feed the beast. Inhaling greatly through his nose he exhaled it out the same way, expelling out his thoughts and getting his focus back.
"Are you good now?"
Zikito looked towards the voice that spoke to him since Xevhiroth was now right behind him, his left hand raising his hat only slightly. Zikito adjusted his hat and turned back forward.
"Yeah, I am. Anyway the inn is just around the corner. We'll stay here for maybe a couple of days, resupply, and see if we can pick up on Unity's trail." He said his voice low so only his partner could hear.
"Okay."
-Unknown Inn; time: 2145-
Xevhiroth had been sitting on one of the two beds in the room, for well over an hour, his fingers arranged in the Tiger hand seal. He had been meditating ever since he got back from his recon around town, having been briefed by Zikito on what he assignment was: While Zikito searched around for information, he was to do what he pleased around town for the time being. So being the man he was, he removed his cloak and hat, dawned a plain black cloak that sported a hood and walked around the town. He knew it would be safe because he didn't see any wanted posters of an Uchiha so he didn't need to keep his face concealed but he didn't want to take the chance. The town was not massive by any means, but it was still big enough to where wondering around would take several hours just for one part of the village but it was something to do.
Xevhiroth walked only about 75 meters from the inn but he saw things that made up a resort town: Baths, Hot Springs, Brothels, and Bars. Several different headbands were worn by a few ninja including a few from the Hidden Leaf and he felt a sudden surge of anger every time he glimpsed that head band. Despite that there was something about it all that felt a little…off, the whole town felt weird but he couldn't put his finger on what it was. He had spent much of the time looking around at everything the town had to offer, and more than once had thought going into the one 'Houses of Ill Repute' but decided not to. On his way back though he spotted something, something he had heard about but never before had a chance to read it: A novel called Icha Icha, it was supposedly written by a Sanin of the last ninja era and was a must read for all men. It was a romance novel, about a man's ever constant struggle to catch the eye of the women he loves and make her his. It was said to be the culmination of the trials every man faces in his life and is a must for every man who dares to call himself such; an outlet for all men who had dared to love….or so he had been told.
He had long searched for it in almost every town he had come across but either he came to a town that didn't have wanted posters and didn't have any copies in any store or had some copies but was covered with his posters of his face. This was the first time he found an actual store with a copy of not just one but all three books of the series and for an affordable price too. He wanted badly to walk inside and buy them all, to find out for himself if they lived up to the hype, but despite this he knew that between the two of them, money was already tight just for himself. If the two of them were going to hunt down a criminal organization that supposedly has it's hand in multiple countries and spies, most possibly, in the highest reaches of the elemental nations; they were going to need all the money for supplies and intel that they could get.
So, however attractive the three books might have been to Xevhiroth, he could do without them. Now he sat in the room that he had booked for them. Though the town had no posters of himself, Zikito was a paranoid nut, he told Xevhiroth to book a room with two beds and if the receptionists asked why for him to say that he was meeting up with a few friends later. The receptionists didn't ask though, he got the impression that she had heard that line many times over, so she could read the signs. Xevhiroth was okay with it though, but now he was stuck waiting for Zikito. The man had disappeared ever since he had dropped off his personal items in the room and vanished after that. Xevhiroth thought about going out to find him but the fact that he left his headband, scrolls, and personal effects here told him that his friend would be coming back soon.
Click
'Speak of the devil.'
Xevhiroth broke his hand-seal and looked towards his….partner.
Jingle Jingle
Zikito walked into the room, holding two bags that sounded like they carried a lot of money.
"Wass'up?" Zikito said in a jubilant manner, due the ryō that he hosted proudly as he stood in the center of the room, with a wide grin on his face. Xevhiroth merely shook his head at him. He had suspected that Zikito would visit someplace that had a gambling hall and apparently, luck had smiled upon him.
"Mind telling me where you got all that?" Xevhiroth asked, raising an eyebrow.
Zikito merely waved him off.
"Ah, you don't want to hear that, besides I can't even believe my luck, first I get information on Unity and then I win it big at the tables, HA! My luck must be changing." Zikito said, a big grin growing even wider on his face.
Xevhiroth brought his legs over the edge of the bed and rested his feet on the wooden floor, his attention focused on Zikito.
"Okay that is something I want to know, what did you learn?"
Zikito said nothing as he turned towards a small table, bringing his winnings out of the bags and started, quickly and methodically, sorting it out. Xevhiroth followed with his eyes as Zikito moved and activated his Sharingan to count the money from a distance. A silence that seemed beyond bizarre penetrated the room and was almost visible as it hung in the air, like what was about to be said was beyond bad news. He wanted to ask again but stayed his tongue because he could tell what the news was in the glimpses he caught of Zikito's face.
'Somehow I don't think I want to know what he has to say because I know it won't be good.'
"This whole town belongs to Unity."
Xevhiroth raised an eyebrow at not only the straight forwardness of his statement, but also the fact that he uncovered this in just a few hours. If the information was reliable then staying in this town was akin to Zikito signing his own death warrant, not to mention his own. Xevhiroth had already helped Zikito and the two were partners, they were in this together. So if Zikito seemed unbothered by it, then Xevhiroth should believe it was because he had a plan to handle it.
Lowering his eyebrow, an easy breath flowed out from Xevhiroth, a sign from him to Zikito showing he was unconcerned. Zikito may not have been able to navigate but if there was something he was good at, it was surviving, the man did manage to stay alive even while being chased by the Hunter-nin; so at the very least Zikito had something in mind to survive this.
'Well, then I suppose the first question I should ask would be.'
"How'd you find that out?"
Zikito didn't turn around, nor did he stop counting his winnings as he spoke.
"After we split up, I went around looking for nothing or at least that was my intention. As I rounded a corner, I saw somebody following me, took him into an alley, knocked him out and searched him. Along with the money that I used to get all this, were a set of documents, detailing everything about this village. Apparently this entire town is a Unity front, everything from the convenience stores, to the inns to the bars, everything is owned by Unity." Zikito had finished sorting his winnings, 3,580 ryō in total, and had also finished his rather short, and vague, explanation of what had transpired over his time exploring the town.
Xevhiroth managed to hide his flabbergasted and worried feelings behind a well-prepped poker face, as stood up from the bed. Walking towards Zikito, he leaned against the wall of the room adjacent to the table, folded his arms across his chest and stared blankly at the opposite wall. Zikito merely went about placing his money into his wallet and sat down in the chair that was tucked under the table he had just been using, facing Xevhiroth's direction. Xevhiroth took his share and placed it into his own wallet, as a silence drifted into the room and consumed the two. Only the buzzing of the lamp was the only sound that seemed to emanate from either of them.
'So we managed to rest and catch our breath, only to find ourselves in the lion's den surround on all sides and have no way out.'
Xevhiroth only kept his eyes straight ahead at the wall, still unflinching about the troubling news he had just heard from his partner. Without evening turning to look at him, Xevhiroth opened his mouth to speak.
"What's the plan?"
Zikito appeared to be expecting the question as he quickly responded.
"We leave come first light. Regardless of whatever we may believe, Unity may already have sent the word out to bring me in. I managed to keep my face hidden, but I doubt that we'll be able to keep any cover here. I killed the guy who had the Intel so he won't be talking, but we shouldn't rest easy till we're clear of this town."
Xevhiroth only nodded his head at the plan that been laid out before him, it was sounded good and was likely their best course of action.
"We best get as much sleep as we possibly can then." Xevhiroth said, to which Zikito only responded with "Agreed."
BUZZ
The room suddenly became dark as the ceiling light cut out. Neither of the two responded with gasps or erratic movements, instead the two casually reached for weapons on their persons.
"Yet, somehow I don't think that's our decision anymore." Zikito spoke with a light tone in his voice.
"What was your first clue?" Xevhiroth asked in response.
The two walked to the center of the room, one facing the window and the other, the door.
"Most likely entry point?"
"I see at least 2 outside on the opposite roof, maybe another two outside the door, and at least one on the floor above."
Xevhiroth had had more than his fair share of surprise attacks while he was sleeping and those were the most used entry point and numbers that accompanied each.
"So-
Zikito spoke as he summoned his scythe, and brought it to the floor.
-we go down."
XxX
The small number of Unity agents stood ready across from the target's room, other agents were positioned both on the floor above and right outside the door. There was no signal to storm the room but instead to wait until the lights went out and then storm in and take the target down. The prize was on the other side of a window pane. Then the lights went out and after a period of maybe 25 seconds the agents jumped into the room through the windows, weapons ready, the door had already been kicked in as a small hole in the roof appeared and one agent fell through it. The seven agents were the only ones inside the room, the target was missing. Looking around the room, one of them noticed a hole in the floor, moments before a kunai was flung through it and stuck in the ceiling, an explosive tag attached.
"Surprise! Mother F-"
BOOM!
XxX
Zikito had cut a hole, no larger than half a meter and fell to the empty apartment below. Xevhiroth fell with him and no sooner had that happened did the windows, ceiling, and door of their room above all burst open. Xevhiroth wasted no time running for the door, with his shoulder braced to break it down. Zikito, meanwhile, quickly flung an explosive kunai from his pouch in through the hole and shouted:
"Surprise! Mother F-
BOOM!
But, before he could finish, the tag detonated. Taking the room and everything else inside, with it in an explosion of hellfire and death.
BANG.
Breaking down the door with his shoulder, Xevhirothchecked the hallway, and found it was clear.
"More will be coming. We need to go!" Xevhiroth shouted.
Zikito didn't need to be told twice, with one great push off his back foot he was out the door. Xevhiroth, being polite, shut it behind him and followed Zikito as the two ran to the entrance of the inn and into the street that the Inn was on. Outside, the lightless streets were as dark as the sky was, it was overcast and the moon was dark, leaving the entire street in a state of perpetual blackness. Despite appearing like a path into the void, Xevhiroth stopped his feet almost the moment he passed beyond the threshold of the door. He reached out and grabbed ahold of Zikito's shoulder, yanking him to a stop alongside him.
"Uhn. What?" Zikito asked with annoyance. But Xevhiroth didn't say a word, but merely gestured to the empty streets before them. Looking both ways Zikito appeared surprised; there wasn't a soul in site.
"I'm sure they must've heard that. Where are their reinforcements?" Zikito asked, seemingly perplexed at the empty scene before him.
"They are already here and have been here before the explosion." Xevhiroth stated looking first left then right.
"How can you tell?"
"With these." Xevhiroth had his Sharingan active since dropping through the ceiling and he could see, somehow, figures and chakra of well over thirty people, hiding in the shadows and peeking around corners and rooftops, out of the sightline of Zikito but Xevhiroth could see them clearly.
"I don't know how but I can see them all, we've got a massive engagement ahead of us." Xevhiroth said, pulling a kunai from the pouch on his shoulder, while Zikito readied his scythe.
"Let them come."
And in response the first wave charged from their hiding spots.
XxX
-Later that night, time: 0230-
Zikito cleaved a body clean in two as it appeared in front of him from around a corner with the entire length of the blade of his scythe, as Xevhiroth blocked three simultaneous attacks and countered effortlessly sending them all into buildings nearby. Zikito threw the hilt of his scythe back behind him and blocked an incoming vertical attack and just gave it a twist causing the body of the attacker to fly down…right underneath the downward strike of his blade.
SLICE
Leaving the decapitated body to its final resting spot, he readied himself for more but found only Xevhiroth, holding a young shinobi by the throat as the body struggled briefly but soon fell limp as Xevhiroth threw him through a wooden wall. The pair had been fighting against the whole damn village for several hours now, if they evacuated all non-combatants, any civilians, and or killed them already, it would account for the number of enemies that they were currently fighting. Unity controlled this place from entry point, to the guy operating the shell game he had passed earlier in the day. But, if they wanted Zikito out of the way, why not just say they saw someone fitting his description was here?
'They could have brought together dozens of different combat styles and maybe had a chance to kill me, so why didn't they just do that? There has to be a reason for it, to kill me they would have been willing to hunt down any non-Unity member just to ensure that I don't escape. Just what is Unity's plan for me?
"I think that'll about do it." Xevhiroth said.
Zikito gave only a nod to his partner and readied to move on but something caught his eye.
"Wait."
He spoke as he walked through the hole that was created by the body of the shinobi that Xevhiroth had just thrown because unlike every other building that the two had passed; this one had a light on inside.
'What's in here?'
Zikito moved through the hole, followed by Xevhiroth who was asking why but Zikito ignored his question. The entire town had gone dark, every room in every building in every corner in the village was dark, Zikito only knew this because during one of their brief respites Xevhiroth had summoned Aquila to survey the areas were those bastards were gathering and for a quick way out of town. She had told him that the entire town was dark to blind anyone from seeing the movements of all those in it. Much to their dismay, the moon wasn't out so all of the entire village was encompassed in a near blackout, so any light was noticeable to anyone.
Zikito was less concerned about who left the light on and more so with why it was on, in a complete blackout. This part of the town didn't look like anything important so why was this building left with a light on? Zikito looked into the building; a small house and the light was emanating from the room directly adjacent from the hole they had entered through. The place was empty except for the two of them and the body of the shinobi that lay crumpled on the floor, according to Xevhiroth. Zikito walked to a closed door, a faint glow coming out from the thin space between the doorframe and the floor and walls. Zikito merely stared at the door, his thought running through scenarios of what would happen if he opened the door.
'Could be just a light someone forgot to turn off or maybe a transmission room for decoding encrypted messages sent from other villages. Hell, maybe Ryo is on the other side of the door, cowering like a little baby and I can end this quickly and get on with my life.'
"Won't know what's on the other side if you don't open the door."
Zikito looked behind him, Xevhiroth stood just behind with his Sharingan still active but no other words floated from his mouth and he just stood there waiting for Zikito to open the door.
With a mixed feeling in his gut, Zikito placed his hand on the doorknob and turned it.
