Hell everyone and thank you for waiting! I have finally been able to write and post again now that the semester is over! And a warning for all of you: the end of this chapter and the next few will be intense but I promise you it'll be a happy ending. :)
Dr. Samuel made up the hospital bracelet for Sophie and then got out the scissors to cut the cord, "Dr. Lightman, did you want to?"
Cal shook his head, "Um, I'm good." Gillian chuckled. Cal could look at dead bodies and blood at a crime scene, but a hospital scene was a different story. Dr. Samuel chuckled lightly and cut Sophie's cord. She took the tiny baby to weigh and measure her.
"Seven pounds even and eighteen inches long," said Dr. Samuel as she handed Sophie back to Gillian. Gillian gazed into her daughter's blue eyes.
"I can't believe your head is actually so small, Mommy would have never known that," Gillian chuckled rocking her little girl.
Cal chuckled lightly and kissed his wife on the temple, "It's all over now though love."
"Yeah," said Gillian looking up and kissing Cal, "Our little miracle baby."
Cal gently stroked Sophie's cheek and said to her, "You defied odds little one. A 3% chance and you defied those odds."
Gillian looked down at Sophie and said, "She looks just like me when I was a baby."
Cal thought of the few baby pictures he had seen of Gillian and nodded, "Yeah exactly like you. Almost looks like the same baby actually."
Gillian asked Sophie, "You ready to go meet Daddy?" Cal smiled and took the tiny baby from his wife's arms. He got a good look at his daughter and realized Gillian was right. Sophie looked exactly like her, "Happy birthday little pumpkin." And in a way, she was his little pumpkin since she was born on Halloween.
The couple heard a knock on the door and Ria poked her head into the room, "Hey is it okay if Sophie has some visitors?"
"Yeah of course," Gillian said happily. Ria entered the room along with Loker and Reynolds. Loker had a laptop with him.
"Oh my goodness she's adorable!" squealed Ria happily.
"No evidence of Lightman in there," smirked Reynolds.
Cal smiled back, "No there's not," he said rocking the slumbering baby in his arms.
Loker opened the laptop and said, "I think a certain someone wants to speak with you."
"Hi Dad, hi Gill!" said Emily excitedly.
"Hey, darling!" said Cal excitedly," "How's Berkley?"
"Great. I mean it's hard and a lot of work but it's also fun," said Emily, "How are you feeling Gillian?"
"Okay, I mean a little sore but I'm sure that would go for everyone who just pushed a seven pound baby out of them," she chuckled.
Emily laughed lightly and asked, "So where is Sophie."
Cal smiled at his daughter's excitement and handed Sophie back to Gillian. Gillian looked down at Sophie, "Sophie, say hello to your big sister, Emily."
Emily looked at the baby through the screen and said, "She looks just like you Gill."
"Haven't heard that before," Cal said sarcastically to his daughter.
"Everyone's been saying that," said Gillian.
"I see," laughed Emily, "Well I actually have a really big paper due tomorrow, so I have to finish proofing it. I love you Dad, I love you Gill, I love you Sophie."
"Love you too darling," said Cal and Emily disconnected. Cal sighed, "It seems like just yesterday that was her being born."
"Well, it's getting late and some of us have to be at work tomorrow," said Loker, "Have a good evening Dr. Lightman, Dr. Lightman." Reynolds and Ria followed Loker after bidding their farewells.
Cal took Sophie from Gillian's arms after Sophie finished nursing and put her in the crib in the hospital room. Cal converted the chair in the room into a bed and settled down hand and hand with Gillian. A couple hours later, Sophie started crying loudly. It had been a while since Cal had had to deal with crying infants, but the memoires were rushing back quickly. Gillian sat up but Cal stopped her, "You rest love, I got her."
"Are you sure?" asked Gillian.
Cal nodded and walked over to the crib. He picked up screaming Sophie and observed her. His brow furrowed, "Gill, are babies supposed to be bluish in color?"
"What? No!" said Gillian bolting up out of bed. She didn't care what Cal thought at that point. She ran over to them and observed Sophie who was also struggling to breath, "Oh my God! Cal, get a doctor. There's something wrong with her!" shouted a panicked Gillian.
"Calm down love, I'm getting help," said Cal as he ran out to find a doctor.
Gillian sat down on the bed cradling Sophie. Gillian tried her best to sooth her, "It's okay baby girl. Daddy's finding help for you." Though Gillian was able to stop Sophie's crying, she couldn't stop her own crying, "You'll be okay baby."
