Everyone's POV
Sabrina watched with disgust as Puck thrusted another handful of french fries in his already stuffed mouth. Sabrina and Puck were grabbing dinner at The Blue Plate Diner, both of their favorite places to eat. Normally, Sabrina wouldn't have even considered going to dinner with just Puck, and Puck wouldn't either. But both agreed to view it as a "last supper" kind of thing, because when they got home and told Granny Relda and Canis about the month of detentions, they were definitely going to be grounded.
"What, Grimm? Thought I couldn't finish two burgers, three sides of fries, and a chocolate milkshake? Think again!" Puck was exclaiming all this proudly, unfortunately with his mouth full.
"Don't worry, I won't be doubting that your eating habits are filthy and you have no manners ever again," Sabrina stated dryly, sipping her own strawberry milkshake and nibbling at what was left of her fries.
Puck smiled in victory, taking what Sabrina said as a compliment. "Maybe now you will also realize that I am your king, and you must bow- er, curtsy before me."
Sabrina snorted. "Yeah, I don't think so. We had better get back home so we can explain ourselves."
Puck stuck out his lower lip, pouting at the pretty blonde sitting across from him. He had to admit that he had gained respect for her, especially since that punch of hers. He warily looked back at the small hands circling Sabrina's smoothie as she finished it off.
"How did you learn to punch like that?" Puck questioned, taking a serious tone for the first time since Sabrina had moved in two weeks ago.
A light frown played across Sabrina's face. "Well, Daphne and I were all alone when we went in the foster care system. We got a horrible person in charge of us, Ms. Smirt," Sabrina wrinkled her nose at the memory. "And the worst part is that no one believed us when we told them our parents were kidnapped, that they would never leave us."
She sighed, shifting uncomfortably. Puck just stayed quiet, hoping she would continue. "Then we were bounced around from home to home, all pretty bad, and the ones that weren't never worked out. The first one we stayed at, we had a nice older foster brother, probably seventeen or so, and the parents would leave us alone. He taught me how to fight. His basement was like a training facility, boxing, knives, sparring, even sword fighting."
Puck's eyes lit up at the thought that Sabrina could sword fight. She continued, wondering why she was sharing all of this. Maybe it was because she never had before. Maybe it was because he actually looked like he cared enough to listen.
"He gave me stuff for my birthday. We were there for a full year, longer than anywhere else. I still have my knife set from him, but my sword was too big to take. Then, they decided to adopt me… but not Daphne. She never really got into the training, and so she didn't connect with the family as much. She would just read and make up her own fairy tales to entertain herself. Anyways, I told them no, I wouldn't stay without my sister. They kicked us out back to the system the next day." Sabrina brushed nonexistent crumbs from her jeans, not willing to meet Puck's eyes.
Puck stood up and took her hand, not wanting to say anything rude or snotty, like he had been originally planning. "Let's go home."
Sabrina's POV
That was unexpected. I didn't think Puck would listen, and I didn't think I would ever share that much. I'm glad I did though. And I'm glad he didn't push for more, or offer me fake sympathy. He just accepted it and moved on, like I had. I couldn't have stayed in that home anyways, I knew mom and dad were still out there.
We were up in the sky, almost dark by now. This was my favorite time of day, when the sky was a dusky purple on one side fading to pinks and reds all swirling together with the setting sun on the other. The stars were out too, so bright here in Fairyport Landing that they looked like someone splattered white and silver paint across the night. I rested my head on Puck's shoulder, dry-eyed and tired, not looking forward to telling Granny Relda and Canis about the fight at school today.
"What, Grimm, falling asleep so I have to be the bearer of bad news? I don't think so," Puck said, his lips near the top of my head.
"I'm not asleep. And you totally should be the one to say it anyway, you're the one who started it! Putting glitter that's STILL IN MY HAIR in my locker! And monkey snot?" I shoot back.
"Yeah, yeah. My genius prank should be revered, not punished. Your right hook, however, should definitely be punished, preferably with being grounded."
We touched back down outside the house, the situation now more a reality. I took a deep breath, wondering why Puck was racing me to the door. Did he want to be the first one in?
Puck reached the door, opening it with an impish grin. "Ladies first."
Oh, so that was his angle. "In that case, go right ahead, I responded.
Puck spluttered. "Are you calling me, King of the Fey, a lady?"
I giggled before I could stop myself. I couldn't help it! He looked so… outraged!
"Fine, I'll go in first, but you're spilling the news."
Puck's eyes widened again. "No, don't worry. I'll allow you to speak, and I will graciously go in first." I rolled my eyes at Puck's so-called 'graciousness.' Oh well, it was gonna come out one way or another. At least with me explaining the entire situation before-hand, we might be able to escape some of the rage.
When we walked in, I immediately saw Canis sitting with the newspaper in the living room. He looked out over the top, raised a disapproving eyebrow, and made sure the paper covered his face again.
Great. So the school had probably called and I wouldn't be able to explain.
"Sabrina. Robin." Granny Relda looked angry, and she had used our real names, not lieblings like I was starting to get used to.
"Hi, Old Lady! Just wondering, what's for dinner?" Puck asked, unaware of the frigid atmosphere he had walked into.
"You will not be getting dinner tonight, or be going out on weekends. Also, no electronic, and you will be cooking for yourself. That includes lunches!" Granny Relda was furious, and I knew she wasn't going to budge.
"Well-well good thing I already ate!" Puck shouted, face red. I slapped my palm on my forehead. He was so stupid sometimes.
"Well I hope you enjoyed it because you will be cooking your own food for the next month."
Puck blanched. I held back laughter. "Old Lady, I have servants, and maids and chefs-"
Granny Relda cut him off. "Maybe in your castle, but not here. And unless you want to go back there-"
Puck turned ghostly white. "Never. You can't make me, you promised I could stay here until that stupid, annoying," Puck halted, glancing over at me. "...problem was handled."
Questions raced through my head What problem had made Puck leave his castle? And why did he sound downright venomous when talking about it? I shook my head. Well, apparently I come from a long line of detectives. This will come out one way or another.
Everyone's POV
Sabrina pulled down her blue comforter and slid between the sheets. She had loosely braided her long hair and thrown on a white tank and green shorts with polka dots that she knew Daphne would love, even if they were a bit short for her taste.
When she heard a soft knock at the door, Sabrina smiled. "Come on in Daph, I was wondering if you weren't gonna show tonight.
Daphne opened the door and walked in, brush in hand. "Let's go Sabrina, I'm a little late tonight and I wanna to have enough time with Mom and Dad to get through the rest of Pinocchio's story. And you have to braid my hair."
Sabrina hopped out of bed and followed her sister out to the hall. She smiled as she took in Daphne's small form dressed in hot pink, fuzzy pajama pants and a black long-sleeved shirt that Daphne said made her feel sneaky. Sabrina was the Queen of Sneaks, and Daphne said she needed to use every trick she had to keep up.
It was true, Sabrina could get away with anything, go anywhere, do anything without getting caught. One time, she had snuck into her principal's office and photocopied an email thread between a teacher and her principal about how the kids they had to deal with were "completely insufferable ants." In Sabrina's defense, they totally deserved to lose their jobs, and she never got caught.
The two girls stepped into their parents' room and reached over to turn on a nearby lamp. The room instantly filled with light, and Daphne pulled down one of the journals Jacob and Wilhelm kept and started to read.
Each night, Sabrina and Daphne had been pouring over the Grimm family diaries, learning more and more about their new home. And it was home now. Even after such a short time, their family was here, and it just felt right.
Sabrina sat behind Daphne and brushed out her hair, her nimble fingers twisting the little girl's long brown locks into neat braids as Daphne read about the adventures their relatives had in the magical little town they now called home.
When it was time to head back, they each kissed their parents goodnight and headed back to their rooms.
Little did Sabrina know, a certain fairy had followed them, as he had every night. He listened to Daphne's expressive voice read and learned more himself too. Listening to the girls' laughter made Puck feel more at ease than he ever was in his kingdom. And, it didn't hurt that he was in a fair number of the stories. He was quite a troublemaker, and four thousand years gave him a lot of time pull pranks worth writing about.
As he watched Sabrina fall asleep, he thought about Sabrina punching him earlier. This was it, no more mister nice guy. He rubbed his hands together and got out his blue hair dye…
A/N This was kind of a boring one to write, but necessary. It added a lot of depth to the characters and showed Sabrina's And Daphne's relationship a bit more. The next one is going to be very fun to write ;)
