A/n: Done for het_100 theme #5 - here i am. I'm trying to get a feel for these two again and...and...it's really hard. DX
It's a simple call-and-response birdsong: Jet would trill, 'Where are you?' and the forest would ring with a hundred chirps - 'I am here, I am here, I am here' - scattered just enough so as not to look orchestrated.
I'm home, Smellerbee would always think.
The peaks and rooftops of Ba Sing Se are so far from home, an onslaught of architecture and tired, faceless, huddled masses. She could get lost in the middle of it all.
On a whim, Smellerbee blends the song (the strangled sound of it is hardly important) and calls from their rooftop, 'I am here, where are you?'
It's a lonely sound, and she doesn't expect anyone to recognize its meaning, but suddenly there's a hand on her shoulder and when she turns it's Longshot.
Here, he pledges.
She puts a hand to his chest and feels the strong heart there.
I'm home, Smellerbee thinks.
