A Glimpse of the Past

Kirika was bent over a pile of wood surrounded by stones, as she watched Rin try and make the wood become fire. Her arms were positioned in way which would allow her to catch the girl within a moment's notice.

"Like this right?" Rin asked, a large smile on her face.

"Yes, very good Rin." Kirika answered, returning her smile. As Rin turned her attention back to the wood, Kirika turned hers over towards where the forest was. Her smile wavered as her eyes fell on Sesshoumaru's form.

Three days had passed sense that awkward moment after their meeting with Naraku, and if it was possible, Sesshoumaru had been even more cold. Kirika wondered if it was because of his missing arm. It was still a wonder to her, how she had managed to miss that about him. Perhaps he had not wished her to find out?

'Of course he wouldn't want you to know.' Kirika mentally scolded herself. 'If you were missing an arm, would you want the world to know?' Kirika frowned.

'Maybe he's angry at me. Maybe he thinks I did it on purpose. Should I apologize? I wonder how he lost his arm?'

The thoughts streaming through Kirika's mind had troubled her greatly for the past three days, but because of Sesshoumaru's frigid countenance, she had kept silent. However, being part neko youkai her curiosity was bound to get the better of her sooner or later. So, rising from her position on the floor and giving Rin assurances that she would return, Kirika walked over to Sesshoumaru. Resolved to speak with him.

"Sesshoumaru," He looked at her without moving his head.

"I wish to speak to you. Alone." She added when it looked as if he wished to remain where he was.

Sesshoumaru thought for a few seconds, wondering what he should do. His youkai more than welcomed the idea of speaking to her alone, but there was another part of him warning him not to. The battle between the two was fierce, until in the end his youkai won. With a nod of his head, Kirika lead the way into the forest.

They walked until they reached a clearing. Kirika sat down on the grass and motioned for Sesshoumaru to do the same. After a moment of hesitation, he did. Kirika having believed that he would not, could not stop the quirk of her eyebrows nor the smile on her lips.

Sesshoumaru looked at her, noticed the throughly amused expression on her face and narrowed his eyes.

"What is it?" He asked, his tone and his features slightly enraged. At that moment however, Kirika did not see them as such. Giving him one look and finding his face even more amusing, Kirika lost what was left of her control and burst out laughing.

Sesshoumaru's eyes widened in both shock and outrage. His entire life no one had ever dared to so much as snigger let alone laugh at him. That this girl would, caught him completely off guard.

Kirika had not stopped laughing yet, and was now tittering to and fro, Sesshoumaru growing angrier with each passing second. But then, the evitable happened. Kirika fell over, right into Sesshoumaru's arms. Her laughing stopped instantly when she saw his angry eyes staring down at her.

"Did you bring me here to laugh at me!" He demanded.

Kirika found her throat suddenly dry, as she struggled to speak, struggled to breathe.

"No." She finally said in a small voice. Sesshoumaru continued to stare down at her, his eyes glowing in the moon light. With a growl, Sesshoumaru shoved Kirika off him and began to rise.

"No, please, I didn't mean to laugh and I really must speak with you. Please." Kirika pleaded. Sesshoumaru did not look at her. Wordlessly he sat down again, but refused to look at her. Kirika lowered her head, feeling completely stupid.

'Well, we can't change the past.' She thought trying to compose herself. With a sigh, she began to speak.

"I. . ." She began then stopped, wondering if she had any chance of finding out what she want to know now.

"Will you tell me who Naraku is?" Kirika said, deciding against asking about his arm.

"He is a fowl hanyou who seeks to control the world." Sesshoumaru answered plainly.

"Oh, I see. Is he your alley, or foe?" Kirika asked, hoping to gain some information on Sesshoumaru's character.

"I would not associate myself with such vermin."

"I see. Does he see you as a foe?"

"It matters not to me." Sesshoumaru looked at Kirika, wondering why she would ask should feeble questions which held no importance.

"Have you fought with him before?"

"Yes. He would be dead now, were it not for his underhanded tricks." Sesshoumaru's gaze became sidelong.

"Do you seek to kill him?"

"Yes." Kirika nodded, everting her eyes.

"Are these all the questions you wished to ask of me? Or is something else on your mind?"

Kirika raised her head to look at him timidly before speaking.

"How did you lose you arm?" Silence followed.

"My half brother cut it off." Kirika gasped.

"Why?"

"Because I sought to kill him." Kirika's gasp was indignant.

"You tried to kill your own brother?" She asked in an anger tone.

"He is but a hanyou whether he is my younger brother or not makes no difference to me." A resounding slap filled the air.

"How can you be so cold-hearted! You are an older brother, with that comes responsibility!" Kirika stood over Sesshoumaru, tears in her eyes. Sesshoumaru turned his head towards her, a growl low in his throat, his eyes blinking red. His anger disappeared at the sight of falling tears.

"How can anyone. . . Feel that way about their sibling? Their own flesh and blood?"

For the first time in his life Sesshoumaru felt guilty about the hatred he harbored for his brother. For some reason, he found himself unable to look at her.

A child's scream pierced the night, bringing one word from both of their lips.

"Rin."
