I no longer count the stars. I don't remember when I stopped. I tried for a while after he died; but it wasn't the same. I couldn't find the one that was his without his head resting on my stomach as we lay in the grass, his hand holding mine so we could both point to the sky to follow the path that had brought him to us.
The sky isn't the same. Maybe the trees grew too tall or the town got too big and the bright lights now dim the star that was his.
"It's not a star, silly; it's a planet," he corrected me when I asked him that first time at the lake if his star could still be seen. I pretended I'd understood that day's astronomy lesson about so many of the wonders we saw in the night sky being dead for hundreds of years, maybe thousands.
But each time he took my hand and always with the same sad longing in his eyes, he would point to the sky, "My star was right there. It's been gone a long time now."
I mourn the loss of his star just as much as I miss him.
