She knew she was playing right into the Baroness's hands, but she hadn't slept, not a wink, all she could do was hug her knees staring in worry at the penciled rendering of her best friend as her mind spiraled in every possible way the woman could make good on her implication of harming him. That was until Roger had come for another of their meetings and she'd burst into tears asking if her dogs (mainly Buddy) were alright.
The fact her lawyer had left the room without a word as her tearful asking only to return a short time later equally quiet about what he'd been doing and instead had started in with questions about her current 'puppy napping' charges didn't help Cruella's already unhinged mindset.
"Rodger, please." The fashion designer asked with a shaking breath. "how is my dog?"
The hurried clicking of what could only be paws has the frazzled woman jumping from her chair as much as her shackled state would allow given, she was also handcuffed to the table to prevent her possible escaping and would have had the positioned officers reaching for their weapons in surprise if Roger hadn't already been waving them off as the sounds drew closer just before the door to the 'visitor's' room opened again.
"Rog called up, said you needed to see him." Jasper says his right hand heavily bandaged as he kneels to unhook Buddy from his lead much to the officer's dismay but again Roger waves them off before suggesting the two go grab a cuppa when the room became just a little too crowded for everyone's liking.
Buddy makes the easy jump from the floor to Cruella's lap, smoothly burrowing under her arms and now covering her face and chin in a heavy coating of dog-slobbered kisses while Ella whispered a tearfully repeated "You're alright," in relief as he snuggled against her.
"Poor kid hardly slept last night, just kept wandering around looking for you." Jasper confessed with a nodded thanks when Roger helpfully steadied the chair the injured musician was attempting to sit down in. "Horace and Anita send their love; they're still tracking leads well as much as Horace can track leads that are considering he's also helping Artie keep things running at the studios while your away." He goes on as Roger tugs a few more legal-looking papers from his briefcase. Some of them he noted had notations of music sections scrubbed in the margins earning a sly grin from the fellow musician.
"My dear, darling boys." Cruella praises a few more tears rolling down her cheeks as she nuzzled her tear-smudged cheek against the top of Buddy's head reminding Jasper all over again of her days as Estella. Back when things were simpler. Easy.
Jasper shrugs dropping his gaze bashfully at the sheer weight behind the words. "Gotta do something to keep us all busy since your locked up here and all can't boss us around." He reminded with a teasing smile as he rubbed at the back of his neck with his bandaged free hand as his gaze darts untrusting towards the newly returned guards once again stationed beside the door.
"Jaz."
Again, the hiccupped tone has Jasper physically biting his tongue to keep the tempting "What's up Stell?" from coming out as he looked up curious.
"Let me see?" her eyes were lowered to the packed wrapping of his hand earning a guilty whimper from Buddy as Jasper immediately shifted to shield the injury from her. "Jazzy." She scolds when her companion shakes his head in denial of the request. "please." She tires again.
Jasper casts a glance toward Rodger and the watching guards but gives in with a low huff. His chair scraped noisily across the floor as he dragged it closer to lay his bitten hand into Cruella's waiting palm. "I know he didn't mean it." Jasper assures reaching over to run his free hand in Buddy's scruff when the pup gives another guilty whimper.
"Actually, that bite might just be a key piece of evidence in your case." Rodger offers flipping a few pages of the scattered case file he was pouring over hastily shuffling a few more music-scribbled pages aside until he found the report he was hunting for as if just now remembering something important.
"The Baroness thought her own lawyers that is has given new evidence accusing Jasper and Horace of harassing her on your behalf ever since your arrest." The lawyer explains "more way of casting doubt on your credibility for your upcoming puppy napping case."
"It's only been a day." Cruella reminds hugging Buddy a little closer at the mention of the woman who gave birth to her but was in no way her true mother.
"True enough." Rodger agrees scribing another quick line of a piano tune buzzing in his mind as he talked.
"But sooner she can get you jailed for pup napping sooner she thinks she can take back the stuff your….erm I mean that 'Stella willed to you." Jasper steps in snagging a free pencil and adding a few of his own cord notes to the music line.
"But if you look at the timeline given by her camp for the time of said harassment it doesn't match up with the evidence, we've given of Jasper having been taken to hospital for his hand."
"Yeah, three stitches this one caused me." Jasper cuts in once again smoothing his free hand in Buddy's scruff "I'd done the same thing in your case mate as I've said I don't blame you." He adds in a low cooing tone that has Cruella giggling a little to hear from the normally rough around the edge's musician.
"That all well for that but she still has a good chunk of London thinking I kidnapped your dog's puppies." Cruella reminds her eyes now trained only on her fumbling lawyer now holding his pencil between his teeth as he sorted yet another tugged-out stack of papers from his briefcase.
"Not just that but now it looks like Pongo and Perdy are missing as well." Jasper informs.
"Anita is still out looking for them now too else she would have come down with me." Roger nods in confirmation at Cruella's started "What?" as Buddy gives a saddened whimpering of his own at the news.
"That….that Witch." Cruella scoffed her fingers threading calmingly into Buddy's course fur as her dog stretched out across her lap in his own small attempt to calm everyone down.
"Sorry?"
"How can she think she can get away with pinning this one on me too with my being locked up when Pongo and Perdy…"
"That's what Rog and I are trying to tell you, Ella" Jasper sighs rubbing at the bridge of his nose with his unwrapped hand. "Your dear crazed mum is saying you had Horace and I snatch up Pongo and Perdy to force Rog and 'Nita into dropping this pup-napping case once and for all in exchange for getting the lot of pup-napped dogs back else you'll have us turn the whole pack of them into coats for your next design show after you bribe or bust your way out of here."
"But Buddy is our saving grace in this instance because, on the time in question, Jasper here was having his hand stitched up at the hospital." Rodger points out sitting a little straighter in his chair as he talks.
"Yeah, and Horace, Jon, and Artie were all with me so she can even use them for scapegoating either." Jasper grinned "Poor Horace fainted when this started bleeding again. You know how weak his nerves get when he's stressed and after seeing you carted off like that, I can say for sure he was stressed alright. "
Cruella nodded "Poor boy." She sighed "But what about Jon and Artie?"
"Made quite the impression on the kids with all those Dalmatian visits and fashion tips on making the best of the hospital wears they dull out instead of letting visitors wear their own clothes." Roger smiles "The hospital even swears on record that they were not coursed into saying this to give alibies." The lawyer points out tapping a lengthy scribble-covered page with the end of his pencil.
"But what if the Baroness tries to get Buddy put down for biting?" Cruella asks her panic returning now as she remembered the chuckled warning as the sounds of those expensive heels clicked away. "Three stitches to close up the wound would be enough to convince someone easy enough."
"That we can't know." Rodger admits his eyes falling on a now whimpering Buddy still laying across Cruella's lap "for now it looks as if she's counting on you being convicted on the dognapping and so worth charges to think of asking for anything like that."
