Chapter Twenty Seven:

Ever since the loss of her parents during the day that the 'goop-things' appeared, the young Witch known as Hermione Granger hadn't really had much that she could call her own property. The most recent item that was an exception to that statement being her own wand. About 27,3 centimeters long, made of vine wood, a Dragon heartstring core and a vine-like pattern engraved into it. A relatively rare one in the country of Britain. While the wand's core was quite common, the specific wood used to make it wasn't the most commonly used in magical Britain, according to the owner of the store Ollivanders at least (which was where most people of the British community of the Wizarding World bought their wands). However, while Hermione's wand could be considered relatively rare in the British parts of the Wizarding World, Heather Potter's wand could be considered exotic.

While it was a bit shorter than most other wands, being only about 23 centimeters long, it was definitely not made from the usual materials used to make wands. Instead of being made from some kind of wood, it appeared to be made from some kind of bone with a flower pattern made from some kind of black material. When the 'normal' Witch asked where the Umbra Witch got her wand, the answer she got was that Heather had gotten it made by a friend and that the materials were freely given by another friend. Suspecting that she needed to pass the other girl's test in order to get any actual details on the matter, Hermione didn't even bother trying to press for information she knew she simply wouldn't get. The fact that the Umbra Witch only seemed to be going through the notions whenever something in class that required the use of a wand popped up made Hermione's suspicions that Heather's wand was more of a novelty than actually necessary for her, as she had been seen performing various feats of admittedly rather mundane magic without the use of her wand.

It was during the first weekend since the start of the semester at Hogwarts that Heather and Hermione's first proper meeting with the person Heather referred to as 'Numbnuts Number One' occurred in the school's library when the two Ravenclaws were doing their homework together. The two had been able to make considerable progress on the topic of the theory of Transfiguration, only for their flow to come to a halt when Numbnuts Number One and his goons showed up, who proceeded to almost immediately insert his foot into his mouth the second he started talking.

"I don't understand why someone who is the heiress of a noble house would want to associate with a useless Mud-Blood." Stated Numbnuts Number One, drawing the attention of both Heather and Hermione to himself. Neither one of them wore any kind of expression that indicated that they were impressed by him. Heather in particular looked downright angry, which was further cemented by the fact that she had started to pop her fingers against her thumbs. Something Hermione had quickly learned meant that Heather was getting really angry and the 'normal' Witch had the right idea that Heather was only a moment away from either punching the person she called 'Numbnuts Number One' in the face, which would definitely break something of his, or making him live up to the derogatory nickname with a strike to the nuts, which was still likely to break something of his. Most likely either his pride, nose, pelvis or all three of them.

"If that was somehow supposed to impress me, you just had a total fail, Numbnuts." Replied Heather, not sounding particularly impressed at all with Numbnuts Number One's arrival and first proper impression, while tilting her head to the sides, causing her neck to pop rather loudly. Something that Hermione suspected was a partial result because of a rather weak wandless casting of the Amplifying Charm.

"WHAT DID YOU CALL ME!?"

"Uhm… this is the library. Could you keep it down so the librarian doesn't throw us out?" Asked Hermione hesitantly, earning looks of varying nature from the others.

"Shut it, Mud-Blood. Nobody asked you."

"That does it. Now I'm angry." Stated the Umbra Witch with a snap of her fingers, after which she seemed to teleport behind the blond Wizard with a very firm grip on something from behind. "Try not to scream but feel free to do so." A surprisingly strong yank from the Umbra Witch caused two distinct reactions to occur. Hermione and Numbnuts Number One's goons wincing in varying degrees of sympathy, particularly the goons who were crossing their legs, and a surprisingly high pitched sound from the victim. Heather on the other hand had a sadistic smile on her face, which remained on said face even after she let go.

"You'll pay for this." The fact that his pitch was still higher than usual severely dampened the effect of the implied threat in what he said, so Heather wasn't particularly concerned.

"Oooh? Then you can either show just how much of a man you really are or get out of my sight. In other words, Numbnuts: FLOCK. OFF!" The not-so-subtly implied threat was punctuated by the Umbra Witch pulling out of her wand before pointing it at the blond Wizard's face. He finally took the hint and left with his goons not far behind him. Once he was gone, the two girls went back to studying.
