To Change History Part 4
After drying themselves and Henry got rid of the German uniform, Henry and Sapphire began to make their way through the thick jungle, aware that Dr. Muller's guards were by now chasing them down. Henry cutting through the thick bush with his machete while Sapphire stayed right behind him, curious as to where they were going.
"Do you even know where we're going dad?" Sapphire asked, of course she didn't know at all, just that she needed to follow her dad.
"As a matter of fact I do, the Dial of Time is rumored to be hidden in an ancient temple deep below in a cave system, to anyone it won't look so special, but there will be telltale signs we're in the right location." Henry replied as he continued to cut his way through with his machete.
It took a few hours, but eventually the two might have found the location as Henry cut through some bush to reveal a rather open space in the jungle, just up ahead was a stone cliff, with a large dark opening in it. Henry smiled as he put his machete down and with Sapphire still following the two walked up to the large opening, where no sunlight pierced through. As Henry said, there was nothing really special about this place.
"Are you sure we're in the right place dad?" Sapphire asked.
"I'm sure…" Henry examined the opening. "Look at the shape of the opening, it's not natural…" Henry pointed out as the opening was in the shape of like a church window, all straight until it curves in until it reaches a single point at the top.
"Well, I don't have a better idea, so I guess I'll trust you dad." Sapphire said as Henry first found a large, dry stick, wrapping some extra cloth he kept and lit a match on it, providing the two with some light. "Here we go…" Henry took a deep breath as he and his daughter entered inside, it was getting darker and darker until there was no sunlight at all, if not for the torch Henry lit, the two would not be able to see at all, like they were blind.
And the deeper they went in, the secrets of the cave started to show, at first there was nothing but rock walls all around, but soon enough, with the torchlight, Henry could see cave drawings drawn through the years in the past. And the cave, well, didn't look like a cave at all, but something you would most likely find in the great pyramids of Egypt. And not only that, but there was a little natural light in the form of gems in the rocks, but Henry kept the torch.
"Wow dad, there must be enough treasure here to set you up for life." Sapphire commented as she picked up a diamond.
"Treasure can mean different things to different people sweetie, right now the only treasure we need to be concerned about is that dial." Henry reminded Sapphire as Sapphire out down the diamond and followed her dad as he went deeper into the temple. "Something as powerful as the Dial of Time is too obvious to be kept here… It's most likely at the end of the temple.
Henry started looking around as the two were currently at a dead end, or so it seemed as Henry spied a small pool of water held in a rectangular pit. Why would there be a random pool of water, if not to…
"Hide an entrance way…" Henry thought out loud as Sapphire paid attention. "This must be the way." Henry thought as he knelt down and put the torch closer to the water to try and see what the water was hiding, but he found nothing.
"Dad, maybe we should try…" Sapphire began, but tipped and fell into the water, landing on the stone bottom as it was only like a foot of water in there.
As Sapphire fell into the water, luckily unhurt, she must have activated something with her weight as the stone bottom began to tilt, a stone opening revealing itself as the water began to flow out, taking Sapphire with it.
"Dad…" Sapphire began as she tried hanging on, but it was slippery.
"No, this is the way." Henry replied as he joined his daughter and slid down into the awaiting abyss, Sapphire having no choice as she let herself go, falling into the unknown after her father.
It seemed like a long fall, but it wasn't as the two eventually found themselves free falling into an underground lake, splashing into the water as they came back up to the surface, getting their breaths back. Sapphire was rather annoyed as it felt like she just free fallen into a large body of water, which she did when she jumped from the train into the river.
Henry of course knew it was all just a part of his life as he swam to dry land, Sapphire joining him as they shook their feathers off. Henry of course lost his torch, but he clearly didn't need it anymore as there was just enough natural light from even more gems in the rocks that the two could clearly see all throughout the new area they were in.
"Okay, so where do we go from here?" Sapphire asked as Henry saw a circular tunnel perfectly cut through, leading deeper still.
"We go froward and hope for the best." Henry told his daughter as he began walking through the tunnel, Sapphire following closely behind.
From his experience going through many other ancient temples, Henry was surprised they have yet to go through any sort of traps, surely they would have run into something by…
"Dad…" Sapphire said slowly as Henry heard his daughter step onto something, a loose stone on the floor as Henry heard some rumbling…
"Oh no…" Henry thought as he quickly grabbed onto his daughter's wing. "Come on!" Henry shouted as the rumbling grew louder and louder, coming closer to the two.
Henry knew it was a boulder rolling down the tunnel and if they weren't fast enough, the boulder would surely turn the two into pancakes. Luckily Henry saw that the tunnel separated into two tunnels, with a smaller one going to the right while the other just continued down straight. Henry knew they had no choice but to take the right one, he had no idea where it would lead, but it was better than getting crushed by a rampaging boulder.
"This way!" Henry shouted to his daughter as he turned them to the right and just in time too as the boulder passed them less than a second later, continuing to roll down the straight tunnel.
"That was close dad…" Sapphire commented.
"Yeah and watch where you step sweetie, anything that doesn't look normal you should avoid." Henry advised Sapphire as she nodded, the two collecting their breaths back as they continued down the new tunnel. "I hope we're still on the right path." Henry said as the two walked down and down.
Eventually they reached a stone wall, another dead end to anyone else, but to Henry…
"I think this is it…" Henry said. "We just need to figure out how to open the door." Henry starting to look all around for clues, but there was no clear way as Sapphire also looked and she saw something her dad didn't as she inspected the spot closer…
Some built up dust which covered a circular diagram… A sort of ancient keyhole, which only required a key to unlock it.
"Dad, look at this." Sapphire said as she used a wing to brush off the dust which has gathered over the centuries as Henry came over and saw what his daughter uncovered.
"Nice work sweetie, I guess you do have some of my blood in you." Henry smiled. "Now if this is a key hole… Where is the…" Henry began, but Sapphire cut him off as she found a staff and at the end of it was a similar design to the keyhole.
"Key?" Sapphire chuckled at her dad as she came over and the two gripped onto the staff together to open the door, the two putting the staff end to match the design of the key and keyhole before twisting it in the same fashion you would unlock any ordinary door.
There was the sound of unlocking as the door began to open up on its own, some dust flying off as Henry and Sapphire covered their faces and coughed a little. Once the dust settled down, the two uncovered their faces to see the door was completely open and inside there was a new small room, which at first glance appeared to hold nothing… But to a trained eye like Henry's…
"We came all this way to find this…" Sapphire clearly disappointed as this was the most boring part of the whole temple, just rocks and cobwebs all over, either this space was meant to be empty or it was already cleared out by someone else.
"Remember sweetie treasure can mean different things…" Henry said as he took a closer look around and noticed some rocks that looked a little loose… "What do we have here…" Henry thought as he got closer and looked through the cracks to see something that shouldn't be there, at least not naturally…
"What is it dad?" Sapphire asked as she joined Henry to look where he was looking.
"It's what we have been hoping to find down here…" Henry told his daughter as he took out a tool and began to chip away at the stone, until it got loose enough that he could uncover what was hidden, taking out the stone and putting it down as he came face to face with the hidden object… "The Dial of Time…" Henry smiled as the artifact looked like a clock, with various dials on it that could set different dates .
"We found it… We actually found it…" Sapphire surprised as she had her beak hung wide open.
"Yes, now we just need to get out of here and back to…" Henry began, but was stopped when he heard an all too familiar voice which made his feathers stick up.
"Thank you for leading and helping us find the Dial of Time, Dr. Yearling, but I believe it is time for you to hand that over…" The voice of Dr. Muller sounded as Henry and Sapphire turned to see the Nazi scientist, with a bunch of guards, guns held ready, blocking the way they came in from.
And I'll leave it there for next time!
So… How will the great Henry Yearling escape and will he prevent the Nazis from taking the Dial of Time and changing all of history!?
You'll going to have to wait to find that out!
Until than, see everybird later!
