Chapter 3: The Letters

The disaster at the zoo has earned me and Harry the longest punishment. By the time we were out of the cupboard again, the summer holidays have already started. I really hate living with the Dursleys because living here is like hell on earth. We were being forced to do chores and cooking, we can't have any meals and Dudley and his gang were always beating us up. One afternoon, Harry and I were told to go get the mail so we went and did so.

Harry and I checked the letters when we got the mail. I was shocked when we saw that we had a letter with our name on it. My heart skipped a beat. "Harry, do you see that?" I said with amazement.

Harry looked as shocked as I was. "Yeah," Harry said.

Our hands were shaking as we were reading the cover of the letter over and over again. I wondered if there was some mistake because no one, not even my birth family that I haven't found yet has written to me in my life. Yet here it was, the letter written so plainly that there could be no mistake. This is what the letter said:

Mr. H Potter and Ms. Lana the Hedgehog,

The Cupboard under the stairs

4 Privat Drive

Little Whinging

The envelope was thick and heavy, made of yellowish parchment and the address was written of yellowish parchment. There was no stamp. Turning the envelope over, our hands trembling, Harry and I saw a purple wax seal bearing a coat of arms; a lion, an eagle, a badger, and a snake surrounding a large letter H. After a few minutes of studying the letters, we entered the living room.

Uncle Vernon took the letter from us. "Oh, Marge is ill. Ate a funny Whelk." Uncle Vernon said. Suddenly, Dudley snatched the letter from us and waved it around to show Uncle Vernon. "Dad, look! Harry and Lana's got a letter!" Dudley shouted.

"Give that back!" I yelled.

"Hey, give it back! It's mine and Lana's!" Harry shouted.

"Yeah!" I shouted.

"Yours and Lana's? Who'd be writing to you two?" Uncle Vernon said. I got nervous as everyone was looking at my and Harry's letter. Harry gulped. Later that afternoon more letters arrived for us. What was happening? Uncle Vernon was ripping up and destroying every letter that came into the house. Harry and I were bored in our cupboards. I was playing with a couple of toys I had, trying to keep myself entertained when I heard a drilling noise from outside. We opened the door a crack to see Uncle Vernon drilling a piece of wood on the mailbox on the door. We closed the door without saying another word.

One fine Sunday morning everyone was sitting in the living room. Uncle Vernon was in a good mood. "Fine day Sunday. In my opinion, best day of the week. Why is that, Dudley?" Uncle Vernon asked happily.

"Because there is no post on Sundays," Harry said.

"Right, you are, Harry. No post on Sundays. Hah! No blasted letters today! No, sir! Not one single bloody letter! Not one!" Uncle Vernon said. Suddenly I heard some screeching, so did Harry. We walked towards the window and pulled back the curtains to take a look outside. I almost passed out when I saw what was outside. There were owls everywhere. On the roof, in the yard, and even on the car! Uncle Vernon kept rambling on about how there was no post on Sundays.

"No, sir! Not one blasted, miserable-" Uncle Vernon stopped when a letter suddenly came flying towards him. There was a loud rumbling noise that could be heard throughout the house. All of a sudden, a big pile of letters came flying out of the fireplace. "Ahhh! Make it stop! Please make it stop! Stop it! Stop it!" Dudley cried as he jumped into Aunt Petunia's lap. Letters were flying everywhere.

"What is it!? Please tell me what's happening!" Dudley screamed. Aunt Petunia screamed loudly. I smiled. Harry and I were jumping up and down, trying to get the letters.

"Go away! Ahh!" Uncle Vernon shouted. I caught one letter, so did Harry. "Give me that! Give me that." Uncle Vernon said. Uncle Vernon grabbed Harry and I. We kicked at him while holding our letters tightly. "Get off! They're my letters! Let go of us!" Harry yelled.

"These are my letters too!" I yelled. Letters kept flying all over the place. Uncle Vernon finally had enough. "That's it! We're going away! Far away! Where they can't find us!" Uncle Vernon yelled.

"Daddy's gone mad hasn't he!" Dudley cried. Aunt Petunia nodded in agreement.

Later during the night, we were able to find a place to stay where the letters could not find us. Where we were, it was very cold outside and there was a large rock way out at sea. Perched at the top of the rock was the most miserable little shack you could imagine. One thing for certain, there was no television there and no cell phone service so I couldn't use my iPhone out here which sucks.

Not to mention, the inside was horrible. It smelled strongly of seaweed, the wind whistled through the gaps in the wooden walls, and the fireplace was damp and empty. There were only two rooms. I was bored but I stayed up late with Harry to watch him turn 11 years old. I already had my birthday a month ago which was on May 5th. We lay and watched his birthday tick nearer. Five minutes to go. Then three minutes to go. Now there was one more minute and he would be 11 years old.

Thirty seconds... Twenty... Ten... Nine... Maybe we would wake Dudley up just to annoy him. Three... Two... One...

BOOM!

The whole shack shivered and Harry and I sat bolt upright. Someone was outside, knocking to come in. Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and Dudley woke up screaming. Uncle Vernon had a gun in his hands, ready to fire at anyone. "Who's there!?" Uncle Vernon demanded.

There was another loud bang and the door broke down making a thud on impact. Everyone screamed when a big man walked through the door. The man had a long beard and was so tall that he reached the side of the door. Dudley looked scared shitless. I hid behind Harry as he walked through the door. "Sorry about that." The man said. The man lifted up the door and put it back into place. Uncle Vernon had the gun pointed at him.

"I demand that you leave at once, sir! You are breaking and entering!" Uncle Vernon shouted. The man walked over to Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. "Dry up Dursley, you great prune." He said as he bent the gun upright which shot a bullet in the air. Aunt Petunia whimpered as he walked towards Dudley. "Mind, I haven't seen you since you was a baby, Harry. And you Lana, I haven't seen you since you were a small pup. Harry, you're a bit more along than I would've expected. Particularly round in the middle." The man said.

"I-I'm not Harry," Dudley said.

Harry and I came out of our hiding places. "I- I am," Harry said.

"And I am Lana," I said.

"Oh, well, of course, you guys are. Got something for you. You can share it with Lana. 'Fraid I might have sat on it at some point but I imagine it'll taste fine just the same. Baked it myself, words and all." The man said. He took out a box from his coat pocket and gave it to Harry. When Harry opened the box, there was a cake inside. The cake had pink frosting with green icing for the words that said Happy Birthday Harry.

"Thank you," Harry said with a smile.

"It's not every day your young man turns 11, now is it, eh?" The man said. The man pulled out his pink umbrella and pointed it at the fireplace. I watched with amazement when he shot fire at the fireplace. Harry sets the cake down.

"Excuse me, but... Who are you?" Harry questioned.

"Yeah, you haven't introduced yourself yet," I said.

"Rubeus Hagrid, keeper of keys and grounds at Hogwarts. Of course, you'll know all about Hogwarts." Hagrid said.

"Sorry, no," Harry said.

"No? Blimey Harry, didn't you ever wonder where your mum and dad learned it at all?" Hagrid asked.

"Learned what?" Harry asked.

"You're a wizard, Harry. And Lana, you are a half-witch." Hagrid said.

Mine and Harry's eyes widened. "Huh!?" I said, with my mind blown.

"I'm a what?" Harry asked.

"A wizard and half-witch, and a thumpin' good 'un, I'd wager. Once you two train up a little." Hagrid said.

"No. You've made a mistake. I mean... I can't be a wizard. I mean, I'm just... Harry. Just Harry." Harry said.

"And I'm just Lana," I said.

"Well, just Harry and just Lana. Did you two ever make anything happen, anything you couldn't explain, when you were angry or scared?" Hagrid asked. Harry and I just stayed silent, not knowing what to say. I was still in shock and trying to process everything that happened. Hagrid stood up. Dudley continued whimpering. Hagrid handed Harry and I our letters. Harry and I opened up the letter. The letter said:

Dear Mr. Potter and Ms. Hedgehog,

We are pleased to inform you that you two have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Students shall be required to report to the Chamber of Reception upon arrival. Please find an enclosed list of all necessary books and equipment. Term begins on September 1st 2017. We will await your owl by no later than July 31st. To avoid detection by the muggles, please use the entrance located at Kings Cross Station Downtown London on Platform 9 3/4. We look forward to having you at our school.

Yours Sincerely,

Minerva McGonagall.

Deputy Headmistress.

Uncle Vernon looked furious and stormed over to us. "They will not be going, I tell you! We swore when we took them in, we'd put a stop to all this rubbish!" Uncle Vernon shouted. Wait, what? Did he know? Harry was furious and so was I.

"You knew? You knew all along and you never told me or Lana?" Harry demanded.

"Of course, we knew. How could you two not be? My perfect sister being who she was. Oh, my mother and father were so proud the day she got her letter. 'We have a witch in the family. Isn't it wonderful?' I was the only one to see her for what she was... A freak! And then she met that Potter, and then she had you, and I knew you would be the same, just as strange. Just as... Abnormal. And then, if you please, she went and got herself blown up, and we got landed with you two. I don't know how you ended up here Lana, but one thing is for sure, you're parents abandoned you! They didn't want you!" Aunt Petunia shouted.

I whimpered and pinned my ears back. "T-That's not true! I-I'm sure they love me." I sobbed. Harry was furious as he should be. Our Aunt and Uncle lied to us.

"Blown up? You told me my parents died in a car crash!" Harry yelled.

Hagrid grew angry when he heard this as well. "A car crash?! A car crash killed Lily and James Potter?" Hagrid shouted.

"We had to say something." Aunt Petunia said.

"It's an outrage! It's a scandal!" Hagrid yelled. Meanwhile, I saw Dudley who was sneaking some of the cake.

"They will not be going." Uncle Vernon said.

"Oh? And I suppose a great muggle like yourself is gonna stop them are you?" Hagrid said. I was confused with what he said, so was Harry.

"Muggle?" Harry and I questioned.

"Non-Magic folk. The boy and the pup had their name down ever since they were born! They are going to the finest school of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the world, and he'll be under the finest headmaster that Hogwarts has ever seen... Albus Dumbledore." Hagrid explained.

"I'll not pay to have some crackpot old fool teach them magic tricks!" Uncle Vernon yelled.

Hagrid got angry and pointed his umbrella at Uncle Vernon. "Never... Insult Albus Dumbledore in front of me." Hagrid said. Hagrid saw Dudley who was pigging out on the birthday cake. He pointed his wand at Dudley and shot some magic out of the wand. A pigtail has appeared from his butt. Everyone screamed when they saw the pigs tail on Dudley's butt. Harry and I smiled. I laughed.

"Well, ahem, I'd appreciate it if you guys didn't tell anyone at Hogwarts about that. Strictly speaking, I'm not allowed to do magic." Hagrid said.

Harry and I nodded. "Okay."

Hagrid looks at his watch. "Ooh, we're a bit behind schedule. Best be off." Hagrid said. Hagrid pulls down the door and it lands with a thud. He turns back to look at us. "Unless you'd rather stay here of course," Hagrid said.

Without hesitation, Harry and I left with Hagrid.
