(A/N) Let's just say that this next scene in the film took place at night
A painted dragon, with a sword running through it. It's the billowing sail of Stoick's ship. Stoick hovers over the familiar nautical map - his eyes on the uncharted corner, swirling in mist and illustrations of dragons.
"I can almost smell them. They're close." Stoick stated as he walked over to the front. "Steady."
Stoick raises his gaze to the epic fog bank that hides the Dragon Island, towering from sky to sea like a bruised, daunting curtain, beyond which nothing is visible. The three ships drift alongside it, skirting its solid edge, looking for an opening. On deck, the crewmen mill nervously, all too aware of what Stoick is considering.
"Take us in."
The helmsman steered Stoick's ship into the fog. The men drew their weapons, preparing for the worst. However, what no one could have predicted, the Night Fury flew into the area just as they entered the fog bank, followed by a dozen other dragons from the island. Luna stayed back as she was able to see through the fog without a problem. She watched the Night Fury lay waste to the ships, but not damaging them enough that the ships would sink.
It seems that he wasn't trying to hurt either side, dragon or human. That would explain a lot since she couldn't recall any humans or dragons ever getting hurt by him. Then she watched as the dragon flew off back towards Berk when the ships started to turn around.
Luna did her best to keep up so as not to lose sight of the Night Fury. However, each time she got too close, the dragon boy immediately turned to face her, which Luna would quickly hide behind a blast. He was fast, but she was just as quick. When the dragon boy made his way over the cove, Luna saw it as her opportunity to try and attack him. She needed to hold him down long enough to get some answers.
The Night Fury struggled to get out of her grasp, but Luna managed to hold him down and was able to keep him still. When the dragon boy began to calm down, she watched as he then started to fall asleep in her hold. She sighed and relaxed her hold, noticing he was now asleep.
Wondering what would happen next, she watched and waited for something to occur. As if he were about to start transforming back into a human. She wasn't entirely sure how long she had been waiting when she heard a moan and watched as the dragon began opening his eyes once more.
Luna asked as she walked over and sniffed him as if to confirm that this was indeed the boy. "Are you okay?"
Hiccup blinked several times as he attempted to regain his sight. He groaned and buried his face in the ground. However, he then tried to stand up, only to fall back down without realizing it.
"Luna?" Hiccup asks as he groaned. "I must have sleepwalked again."
Luna was surprised to see how calmly he was taking this. She was beginning to wonder if he even knew what occurred. "Hiccup, don't you remember what happened?"
"No. Why?" Hiccup asks as he plopped back down. "Ow. What's wrong? Why does my head feel like it weighs a ton?"
"Uh..." Luna wasn't entirely sure how she would break this to him. "Hiccup," she said hesitantly, "I don't know how else to tell you this, but...you're a dragon."
Hiccup froze and Luna waited to see how he would respond to such an accusation. "Ha," he chuckled as he crawled over to the lake for some water. "That's funny, Luna. I never knew dragons had a sense of humor."
And that's when he got a look at his own reflection. When Hiccup saw the Night Fury staring at him through the reflection of the lake, he shrieked and jumped back in shock. Then he started to frantically look himself over and finally realized he was indeed a dragon. He looked over his shoulder and noticed his right wing was spread out uncontrollably as a defense mechanism. Then he looked over and noticed a left wing doing the exact same thing as he stumbled around.
Hiccup shrieked as he skidded backward, tripping over his tail. He then flipped and ended up rolling over himself. "What?!" He looked down and saw his entire underbelly was now covered in scales. "No, no! No, this can't be happening! I'm the Night Fury!"
Luna tried to help calm Hiccup down by saying, "Hiccup, please try to calm down."
Hiccup rolls around and tries to get some distance between himself and Luna. "Did you do this to me?" he demands.
Luna was shocked by the accusation but knew he was speaking out of fear. "No!" She still couldn't help but feel offended. "I'm shocked you would think I'd do something like this to you."
Hiccup sighed and looked down as if he were ashamed of himself. "You're... you're right. I'm sorry, I just...," he then started to shift and Luna watched his body morph. "I don't know what's going on with me."
"That would make two of us," Luna said as she watched him morph back into a human, seemingly unconsciously. "Are you doing this?"
"Doing what?" Hiccup asks, seemingly unaware of what's happening. When he was human again, Hiccup plopped on the ground due to the massive weight difference. He then jumped up and looked over himself. "I'm human again?"
Luna was just as surprised as she watched him and began to circle around him to figure out if he was indeed completely back. Hiccup gasped as he looked down at his hands and even felt up his face and body. He placed his hands on his chest and was amazed that he indeed had a chest, and skin instead of scales. He even looked down and saw the scales that shed off of him and looked them over.
"I...I'm human again," Hiccup said, not quite understanding how or why. But he wasn't going to question it as he scruffled up his hair. "I'm...human!" Then he realized something and quickly used the big pieces of scales to cover him. "AAAAnd I'm naked."
Luna didn't seem to understand that concept and appeared confused. "Are you not usually?"
Hiccup blushed slightly as he realized he needed to explain himself. "No, I...I wear clothes," he clarified.
"Those furs are not yours?" Luna was surprised to hear this news. "I just thought you were shedding," she said. "Dragons usually shed a lot when we need to replace our scales."
"Uh...no, we have skin," Hiccup explained as he tried to find some of his spare clothing. Luckily, he had one pair left behind some rock formations, so they were still dry, even if they were wet, he'd put them on. "We get cold, so we need to wear these clothes. And it's also impolite to walk around naked around others."
Luna wonders, "Why?"
Hiccup was not going to get into what made men and women different from humans the dragon. He could maybe one day but not today. He has his head spinning in three different directions simultaneously and needed to get his head on straight.
Luna decided to take his word and wondered if this was a normal thing. Not the clothing thing, that was something she was starting to move on from. But the idea that this boy she just assumed could talk to her, now had the capability of turning into them. A Night Fury of all dragons.
Was this boy born from a human, or was he born from a dragon?
"This...ability you have...it's incredible," Luna said as she circled the boy, now fully dressed, smelling him, and could easily smell the Fury on him. "This is unlike anything I have ever seen in my life."
Hiccup then looked up and noticed the sun coming in. "Oh, no, I've got to go. If I've been gone too long, then they're going to be suspicious." He however knew this was something that he needed to figure out. "I'll go and see if I can find out any information about a...hybrid," he said as he walked away from the cove.
"I'll do the same thing," Luna confirmed as she readied her wings. "I'll be back soon."
"Yeah, see you around," Hiccup agreed, and then he ran off to continue his training.
Luna then took off into the sky to see if she could find anyone who knew anything about what was going on. There had to be someone out there who could explain how this was possible. But if he was capable of controlling it, could the Queen of the Nest have been controlling him?
Hiccup managed to make his way back to the village just in time to quickly eat before making his way to dragon training. Hiccup runs his finger over an outline of a dragon on his shield as he stood in the arena.
"You know, I just happened to notice the book had nothing on Night Furies. Is there another book? Or a sequel? Maybe a little Night Fury pamphlet?" Hiccup was curious to learn if his condition was something that all Night Furies had or if it was something that he had. "What-what about a dragon that was also human? Has there ever been anything like that?"
That was when a blast took the axe head off of Hiccup's hilt, leaving a smoking hole behind him. Hiccup then yelped and ran away in terror.
"Focus, Hiccup! You're not even trying." Gobber cried to his apprentice as a Deadly Nadder, loose in a maze-like arrangement of moveable walls chased him. Gobber was safely outside of the arena, shouting orders from above. "Today... is all about attack." The Nadder hops from wall to wall, sending the recruits scurrying around the labyrinth to escape. "Nadders are quick and light on their feet. Your job is to be quicker and lighter."
The teens move in, stumbling over Hiccup and his unwieldy shield. The Nadder spots Fishlegs' ample rear hiding behind a wall. It whips its tail of spikes. Fishlegs screams and lifts an entire wall to shield himself from the spray.
"I'm really beginning to question your teaching methods." Fishlegs cried out as he tried to survive.
"Look for its blind spot. Every dragon has one. Find it, hide in it, and strike," Gobber advises.
Ruff and Tuff rush in, diving and rolling up to the Nadder's nose. The Nadder sniffs the air - it can't see them. Tuff and Ruff are smashed together - too close for comfort.
Ruffnut asks her brother, "Do you ever bathe?"
Tuffnut says, "If you don't like it, then just get your own blind spot."
Ruffnut was getting annoyed and she pushed her helmet against his. "How about I give you one?"
Ruff and Tuff then begin to each other, until their movement and noise give them away. The Nadder attacked, snapping at both of them, trying to attack them with her spikes.
Blind spot? Yes. Deaf spot? Not so much," Gobber says with a shrug.
Hiccup wanders up to Gobber, while the others dart past. "Hey, so is there any information about a hybrid? Like a dragon that can transform into a human?"
"No one's ever met one and lived to tell the tale," Gobber tells him. "Now get in there!"
Hiccup nodded as he backed up a little. "I know, I know, but hypothetically speaking..."
"Hiccup," Astrid whispered his name.
She puts her finger to her lips and gestures for him to hide. A moment later, the Nadder leaps over the walls, surprising them by landing in front of her. Astrid somersaults into its blind spot, confusing it. She rears back to strike just as Snotlout leaps in, protectively shoving Astrid behind him.
"Watch out, babe. I'll take care of this," Snotlout stated as he threw his weapon.
But he only ended up throwing it, sending the axe flying into the wall. In the process, the Nadder ended up laughing at him as Astrid glares at him.
"The sun was in my eyes, Astrid." Snotlout defended as the Nadder shoots a beam of fire at them. They then took off and blocked off the incoming attacks. "What do you want me to do, block out the sun? I could do that, but I don't have time right now!"
The Nadder tears off after her, knocking down walls in pursuit. She leaps and dives like a highly trained gymnast. The Nadder however ended up hitting the pillars and sending the pieces toppling everywhere. Hiccup ended up wandering up to Gobber again, still trying to find out more about either Hybrids or Night Furies.
"You think that they're only active during the night?" Hiccup was curious if the dragon side of him only comes out at night, as he changed back just before light.
"Hiccup!" Gobber cried, noticing the falling pillars and approaching Astrid.
"Hiccup!" Astrid exclaimed as she ran out of pillars to jump on.
Hiccup spins around to see the maze walls collapsing like dominos toward him. Astrid comes flying through the dust and crashlands on top of him, laying him out in a limb-tangled mess.
"Oooh! Love on the battlefield!" Tuffnut teases playfully.
Ruffnut comments, "She could do better."
The Nadder closes in, emerging through the cloud of dust towards the teenagers. Astrid tried to get her axe back whilst Hiccup was struggling to untangle it.
"Just... let me... why don't you..."
The Nadder spins around and races back toward them like a Raptor. Astrid untangles herself and tries to pull her axe from Hiccup's shield... which is attached to his limp, gangly arm. She plants her foot on his torso and YANKS the axe free, still burrowed into the shield. She spins and swings the axe and shield, scoring a direct hit on the oncoming Nadder's nose. It yelps and scurries off since it was out of shots, using them up during the training and its quills were out.
"Well done, Astrid," Gobber said as he congratulated her.
Gobber hobbles off to wrestle the Nadder back into its cage on the end of the wall. Hiccup gets to his feet as all eyes are now upon him. He turns to find Astrid glaring at him with a look of anger.
Astrid asks him, "Is this some kind of a joke to you? Our parents' war is about to become ours. Figure out which side you're on." She then grabs her axe and stomps off.
Hiccup watches, stung by that idea. He had only just learned that he was some sort of hybrid between both sides of this war. What side of this war was he supposed to be on? He could communicate with a dragon for crying out loud, how was he supposed to just befriend one of their kind, and then be expected to kill them?
What side is he on?
He hopes that Luna was having better luck learning more about this ability of his.
