So it's been way too long since I wrote something. I was listening to In the Heights this morning and realized that I was going through fanfiction withdrawal. I quickly fixed that by banging out this little something...

Usnavi never really understood why adults liked coffee so much. His father said it was because they needed an extra something to get them through the day, while his mother said it was a dangerous addiction and that Usnavi should never, ever drink it.

One thing he did understand, however, was why people liked the smell of coffee. Whenever his father would drag him downstairs to open the bodega, he let Usnavi start the coffee pot. Usnavi would scoop the ground beans, inhaling deeply and finding that he very much liked the scent. He would watch the machine, completely entranced and mystified, as the now-liquid coffee trickled down into the pot. He wasn't sure how it happened, but he liked watching it.

On one particularly busy morning when his father was occupied, Usnavi poured out the tiniest bit of coffee into a small cup, raising it to his lips cautiously and blowing on it. Then, looking over his shoulder guiltily, he took a sip.

Gagging, he nearly spit it back out. It burned his tongue and left an absolutely disgusting bitter taste in his mouth. He dumped the cup in the trash, looking at the coffee pot, even more puzzled than before.

This experience made Usnavi determined to figure out why everyone seemed to like this bitter drink. He watched carefully every time someone asked for a cup, finally seeing the light when he saw a businessman hurriedly dump a packet of sugar into his drink, stirring it with one of those little wooden sticks. Usnavi then tried this out for himself, after making sure his father wasn't looking of course.
