Chapter 22: The Zillo Beast
Hey everyone I'm back with a new chapter. Happy Star Wars Day! May the 4th be with you! Lot of Stars Wars stuff has been happening and with the release of the new game Jedi Survior, Star Wars Visions, Bad Batch, Mandalorian, etc. A lot of potential ideas out there and I hope you like what I have planned. We find ourselves on Coruscant in a large open area as Shun and Jinora were standing in front of something.
"Thanks again for bringing this over." Shun said.
"Are you kidding? This is my favorite airbending exercise. I love teaching new airbenders with this." Jinora grins when Ahsoka walks in.
"Uh hey Shun I got your message. What's this important thing you wanted to talk about?" Ahsoka asks.
"Ahsoka you made it." Shun smiles. "Well since Master Skywalker is off planet with Master Windu on a mission, I thought we could use this chance to teach an important airbending lesson."
"Sweet. Bring it on." Ahsoka said.
"Ahsoka Tano, your airbending lesson is The Gates." Jinora gestures to a series of gates that were lined up together in a big circle.
"Whoa. We sure don't have something like this." Ahsoka said unsure what this was all about.
"This teaches the most fundamental part of airbending. The goal is to weave your way through the gates and make it to the other side without touching them." Jinora instructs.
"Sounds easy enough." Ahsoka said.
"Master Jinora forgot to point out you gotta do it while the gates are spinning." Shun smirks making her chuckle.
"I always forget that detail." She admits.
Using her airbending Jinora caused all the gates to spin rapidly.
"Uh okay…not so easy anymore." Ahsoka said.
"Shun will demonstrate how to do this." Jinora said as Shun stepped forward. "Airbending is about spiral movements. When you meet resistance, you must be able to switch direction at a moment's notice."
Moving in Shun leaps into the gates and spins with the skill of an airbender dodging all the gates and landing on the other side.
"Your turn." Shun smiles.
Taking a deep breath, Ahsoka leaps at the gates but when she made it past the first ones the second one hit her making her cringe in pain.
Trying to make her way through it Ahsoka ended up getting hit multiple times causing Shun to cringe before she falls out and lands on her butt.
"Don't force your way through. You have to be like a leaf in the wind." Jinora said helping her up.
"Remember what I told you about airbending. Constantly moving and spinning in a circle." Shun said.
Recalling it Ahsoka nods before trying again.
Running in she made it further in before the panels started to hit her again making Shun cringe.
After being knocked out for the 5th time Ahsoka panted heavily.
"How long did it take you to do this without getting hit?" Ahsoka asks.
"It took me a while." Shun cringed at the memory.
"Don't feel too bad Shun. Of all the Avatars I've worked with you handled it the best. I know that's only one other Avatar but still." Jinora shuddered at the memory of when Korra destroyed the whole exercise with her firebending.
"Any advice?" Ahsoka asks as Shun helps her up.
Pausing Shun looks at the gates and then to Ahsoka. He needed something that she could relate to and help her.
"I got it. Give me your lightsaber." Shun said.
"Uh ok." Ahsoka said confused by this.
Making his way to the other side of the gate Shun puts the lightsaber opposite Ahsoka.
"Now picture each of these gates is a Battle droid about to fire at you and you need you make past all the droids to get your lightsaber and fight them off." Shun said.
Hearing this Ahsoka could almost instantly picture it.
"Okay now this I can do." Ahsoka said standing back up.
"Hmm the student is becoming the teacher." Jinora smiles proud of him.
Running in, Ahsoka leaps through the gates and as she moves through them she tries to picture them as battle droids.
Spinning and dodging she makes it halfway through before bumping into a gate causing her to fumble and bang into more before falling out of the gates groaning in pain.
Looking up she saw Shun and Jinora looking down at her.
"Not bad. You made it further than your previous tries." Jinora points.
"I think I liked your training better." Ahsoka groans.
"My training was barely anything. This is what I had to learn." Shun said.
"And boy you did not make it easy." Jinora giggles.
"Any chance we can take a break?" Ahsoka asks sitting up.
"I'll get you some water." Jinora said walking over to a cooler.
Sitting up Ahsoka rubs her back in pain.
"You guys couldn't pad these things?" Ahsoka asks.
"If it doesn't hurt you're not learning." Shun said walking behind her. "Here hold still."
Bending water from his canteen, Shun places them against Ahsoka's back causing her to moan in relief.
"Oh yeah that hits the spot." She sighs.
Glancing over her shoulder, Shun couldn't help but stare at Ahsoka. Her smiling face, the sweat shining off her orange skin, as a bead traveled down her chest Shun got a small glance at the area under her tube top making him blush.
Suddenly they both got a message snapping him out of his thoughts.
"What in the?" Shun said as Ahsoka looked at her communicator.
"Looks like Master is returning from his battle." Ahsoka said when Jinora got a message as well.
"And it appears Padme wants to see me as well. Alright Ahsoka we'll stop for today." Jinora said.
"Phew. At least it means I get a break from getting hit all the time with those gates." Ahsoka said.
"Don't worry we'll get back to this." Shun said using the Force to get her lightsaber back.
"I'll need that back." She smiles as Shun hands it to her. "Come on let's go." She said as they ran off.
Meanwhile, at the landing bay we see Anakin and Mace watching as many clothes were stationed with weapons as the ship opens up.
"You are clear. You are clear." A clone said.
"Copy that." Slowly opening the ship we see a large serpent-like creature with arms and legs the size of a tall building being transported on a carrier toward a large testing building. This was a Zillo Beast.
Walking out we see Palpatine and Mas Amedda approach the Jedi and gaze upon the beast.
"Such size. Such Power." Palpatine said in awe.
"With respect, Chancellor, I believe this creature could pose any number of dangers. Bringing it here to Coruscant is a mistake." Mace warns.
"Oh, I assure you, I did not make this decision lightly, Master Jedi. The sooner we unlock the Zillo beast's secrets, the sooner we can end this terrible war." Palpatine assures.
"I hope you're right Chancellor." Mace said as a female Bival in a white uniform arrived. This was Sinover Boll.
"I'm turning the Zillo Beast over to you, Doctor. I trust it will be given good care." Mace said.
"The Beast is a priceless resource, Master Windu. It will be well treated, I assure you." Sinover assures.
As the Beast was brought inside, Mace had an uneasy look on his face. Palpatine on the other hand had the exact opposite.
Later that day at the Jedi Temple, we find Obi-Wan and Mace talking in a room about the situation.
"I know that he thinks, by studying it, the knowledge could prove beneficial, but from what you and Anakin reported on Malastare it hardly seems worth the effort." Obi-Wan said.
"I raised the issue with the Chancellor on Malastare, without success." Mace informs.
"Well then perhaps someone else needs to try." Obi-Wan said when the doors swung open.
"Of all the insane and crazy things you people could do!" Shun said storming in.
"Shun wait!" Ahsoka said running in with Anakin behind her.
"Oh great you again." Mace rolls his eyes.
"Shun, is there a problem?" Obi-Wan asks.
"You bet there is, Anakin just told us about your little incident on Malastare. What were you thinking bringing something like that here?!" Shun asks.
"I didn't want to. The Chancellor did but I was against it." Mace said.
"Oh of course you were because you don't care about…wait what?" Shun pauses.
"This creature is dangerous and it needs to live out its life away from Coruscant. Even if it can be useful it's not worth the risks." Mace assures.
"Huh?" Shun said not expecting this.
"Feel better Shun?" Obi-Wan asks.
"Yeah you're not about to go Avatar on us are you?" Anakin asks.
"I can't believe I'm about to say this but…I'm with Master Windu. He's right." Shun said surprising everyone by that.
"Huh? That felt really satisfying." Mace smiles softly enjoying that.
"Wait you don't think we should use the Zillo Beast?" Anakin asks.
"Absolutely not. I mean this thing is endangered. We can't harvest it for parts. We need to preserve its existence and let it live its life in peace." Shun said.
"I agree, bringing it to Coruscant is a mistake." Mace said.
"Still weird." Shun said glancing at him.
"Wow so it seems the Jedi Order and the Gray Order are in agreement for the first time." Ahsoka points out.
"Hmm it would appear so Ahsoka." Obi-Wan said getting an idea.
At the testing lab, we see Sinover and her medical droids running tests.
As one of the droids lifts up the scales and pulls the Zillo Beast lets out a shriek in pain before one droid flies in and injects it with something.
"That's enough." Sinover said before jotting down notes.
Floating up on a platform, Palpatine and Mas join her.
"Its scales are remarkably strong and light. If we could examine their composition, we might be able to synthesize them to reinforce our clone armor." Sinover informs.
"And what is stopping you?" Palpatine asks.
"We need to remove the scales first. It's very difficult, not to mention painful." Sinover points out.
"Would it not be more efficient to simply kill the beast?" Palpatine asks.
"Kill it? Are you sure?" Mas asks.
"Chancellor, I must protest. Besides being the last of its kind, this creature may be intelligent." Sinover said.
"I find that hard to believe. It is, after all, just an animal." Palpatine denies causing the beast to growl.
"It didn't seem to like your comment, Chancellor." Sinover said as the beast glared at Palpatine.
"I applaud your high moral stance, Doctor. After all, principle is in short supply these days. However, every passing minute of warfare brings countless deaths, deaths that could be prevented once the Beast's secrets are unlocked. If there is any way to hasten that process, it is our moral duty to explore it." Palpatine explains.
"I serve at your pleasure, Chancellor. I'm just not sure where to begin. The fact remains that the Beast is indestructible." Sinover said.
"Nothing is truly indestructible, Doctor. Wasn't there something in Malastare fuel that affected the Beast?" Palpatine asks.
"It weakened the beast yes but—"
"Excellent. I suggest you start there." Palpatine interrupts. "Doctor you need to find a way to kill that beast or we shall replace you with someone who can." He warns before taking his leave making Sinover very nervous.
At the Senate, we see Shun, BD, Anakin, and R2 walking through the hall before meeting up with Obi-Wan, Padme, Jinora, and 3PO.
Beeping R2 and BD-1 said hello to 3PO.
"Oh, hello. You're not in trouble again, are you?" 3PO asks and R2 beeped retaliation. "I am not being rude."
BD however beeped in response.
"Now who's being rude?" 3PO mutters.
"Not that it isn't a pleasure, Senators, but I thought we were just meeting Obi-Wan here." Anakin said.
"Master Kenobi explained the problem to us. We're here to help." Padme said.
"Problem? What problem?" Anakin asks.
"The situation with our friend from Malastare." Obi-Wan declares.
"Oh I see what's going on here. You want Shun and me to help influence the Chancellor." Anakin realized.
"Why didn't you just ask us?" Shun asks.
"Because Anakin might have said no." Jinora said.
"Why on Earth would you say no to this?" Shun asks.
"Because I know what the beast can do. I support the chancellor." Anakin said.
"The Zillo Beast was chained up and brought here against its will." Jinora points out.
"Jinora is right. It has no voice to defend itself. Anakin, we have to be that voice." Padme agrees making Anakin chuckle
"You haven't seen it in action. You have no idea what it's capable of." Anakin said.
"I'd rather not." Shun said.
"A creature's life, maybe even an entire species, is at stake. Doesn't that at least warrant a discussion?" Padme asks making Anakin sigh.
"I didn't think you all would feel so strong about this." Anakin said.
"Anakin, Windu and I are in agreement over this." Shun emphasizes.
"All right, let's speak to the Chancellor. But I still don't like this." Anakin said.
Soon, Anakin, Padme, Shun and Jinora were in the Chancellor's office talking to Palpatine and Mas Amedda.
"I should have known secrets do not stay secret for long around here." Palpatine said glancing at Shun briefly.
"Isn't that precisely the point of a democracy?" Padme asks.
"Of course, in wartime, some things must be kept secret. Even from the people, so as not to aid the enemy." Anakin points out getting many glares.
"It is unfortunate that the Beast must die, Senator. But the greater good demands it." Mas insists.
"How is killing the last of an endangered species in secret without debate good for anyone?" Padme asks.
"Don't you have more pressing issues that your attention today?" Mas asks.
"Can't you give us a real answer for once instead of just copying Palpatine like an iguana parrot?" Shun asks.
"Why you disrespectful." Mas glares moving towards him but Palpatine stops him.
"Calm yourself Vice Chancellor. The boy is just passionate. No reason for things to get ugly." Palpatine said.
"Of course Chancellor." He said before glaring at Shun.
"Chancellor you drag a creature to a crowded planet against its will, experiment on it but when you find that you can't get anything without killing it you have to realize that there is a line you cannot cross." Jinora said.
"I sympathize, my dear, truly I do. But consider this. A democracy is only as strong as the people who comprise it. At present, the people I am charged with protecting are dying faster than I can count. It is my moral imperative to take action. Anakin, Shun, is it not worth the life of one savage beast to give our brave troops the advantage they need to win this war?" Palpatine asks.
"Absolutely/ Absolutely not." Anakin and Shun said at the same time.
Pausing Anakin and Shun glanced at each other shocked by what the other said.
"What do you mean yes?" Shun asks.
"I do see both points of view. I'm certain a reasonable solution will present itself." Anakin said.
"Master Kenobi has taught you well. Take note Shun. You might become as wise as Anakin someday." Palaptine said.
"Chancellor." Mas said getting his attention.
"One minute." Palpatine said walking away.
Almost immediately Shun yanks Anakin into a corner with Jinora and Padme.
"What the hell was that?" Shun asks.
"He's right. What are you doing?" Jinora asks.
"Whose side are you on?" Padme asks.
"Yours, but you must admit the Chancellor makes some good points." Anakin points out.
"Oh please. Anakin we have armies of clones and Jedi you really think one Zillo Beast is going to be enough to protect everyone?" Shun asks.
"We can synthesize more of his armor." Anakin said.
"Yeah but Anakin the problem is that you guys are so preoccupied with what you can do you're not stopping to think if you should do it." Shun said.
However, while they were arguing Palpatine was already making the call.
"Ah, Doctor Boll, I trust you have some progress to report." Palpatine assumes.
"Yes, Chancellor. I was able to convert the Malastare fuel toxin into a poison gas. I believe it's now strong enough to kill the Zillo Beast if that's still how you wish to proceed." She asks.
"I wish I saw an alternative. However, sadly I must ask you to proceed with your assignment." Palpatine orders before hanging up.
Looking up at the beast Sinover frowns hating this.
"I'm sorry. Don't worry, it will all be over soon. Begin procedure." Sinover said as her droids began releasing a toxic green gas around the Zillo Beast. "Vital signs are dropping."
Roaring the Zillo Beast began to fight back and break free of its prison much to Sinover's surprise.
"No, it should have been enough." Sinover gasps as the Zillo Beast broke free and began smashing all the droids in its way.
Outside the facility, the clones set up around the perimeter heard a loud banging from the inside.
"I don't like the sound of that." One clone said.
"If that creature is as powerful as they say it is what good are rifles against it?" Another asks.
"Shut it Kosmos!" The first clone said.
Bursting out of the facility, the Zillo Beast roars as the clones opened fire on it, but like Kosmos assumed nothing seemed to work.
Swatting them away the Zillo Beast began its rampage towards the city.
Seeing this Sinover saw the horror they had unleashed.
At Palpatine's office, a loud alarm went off confusing everyone.
As a hologram of Sinover appeared everyone looked at Palpatine.
"Doctor were you successful?" Palpatine asks.
"Sir we have a problem." She admits.
"What did you do?" Shun asks walking closer.
As Sinover explained the situation the Zillo Beast was getting closer and closer towards the Senate building.
"We need time to convert Malastare fuel into more toxin, Chancellor." Sinover informs.
"I suggest you hurry doctor." Palpatine said when Shun steps in.
"Belay doctor we are not killing it!" Shun said.
"We aren't?" Sinover said surprised.
"Young man I ask that you step away from that control right now." Mas orders.
"I'm gonna try and stop this beast before it gets out of hand. All I ask is that you wait until after I've tried stopping it before you drop the gas." Shun requests.
"Shun do you have any idea the gravity of situation you are requesting?" Palpatine asks but Shun just glares at him.
"Yes and it's because of you we're in this mess. So as far as I'm concerned you no longer have a say in this issue." Shun said.
"Now hold on just a minute you cannot just order the Supreme Chancellor like that." Mas said but Shun yanks the stick out of Mas' hands and breaks it on his knee.
"Shut the hell up Horn Head. You ordered it to be killed before we even finished this meeting. And now all of the city is in danger because of you!" Shun points.
"Vice Chancellor I would strongly recommend standing down. This is not a fight you will win." Jinora informs. "Let him try."
"Very well but if you fail I will give the order." Palpatine said.
"Stay with General Kenobi, Rex. We're on our way." Anakin said into his wrist communicator.
"Better hurry, sir. You're missing all the fun." Rex said before hanging up.
"Anakin get everyone out of here." Shun said grabbing his staff.
Beeping BD 1 hops off his back.
"BD stay with Master Jinora." Shun orders.
Nodding the droid walked over to her side.
"Do you really think you can stop it?" Jinora asks.
"I have to try." Shun said before running out.
"Evacuate the staff to the underground shelters. We need to hurry." Padme said as they made their escape.
Outside we see Master Obi-Wan and Windu ordering a squad of clones toward the Senate Building where the Zillo Beast was heading.
"Shun's going to what?" Obi-Wan asks into his commlink.
"He's going after the Zillo Beast. He thinks he has a plan." Anakin said
"Are we seriously going to let him?" Mace asks.
"None of our weapons seem to work. What choice do we have?" Obi-Wan asks.
As much as Windu hated this Obi-Wan was right. They were low on options.
Scaling the buildings toward the Senate the Zillo Beast was on the lookout for something, or rather someone.
Suddenly a large blast of lightning flew in and hit the Zillo Beast in the face causing it to scream in pain.
"Hey you!" Reaching the top of the building Shun stares the Zillo Beast down. "That's enough! You've had your little outburst now it's time to calm down!"
Roaring the Zillo Beast turned its attention towards Shun who landed across from it.
"He got a hit." Mace gasps.
"Yes but something tells me he'll need more than one for this to work." Obi-Wan said.
From a lower level, we see Anakin, Palpatine, Padme, Jinora, the droids and Mas board a ship being piloted by a clone.
"Shun are you sure about this? If we launch the gas bombs—" Anakin said into his commlink.
"You will do nothing!" Shun interrupts. "You all had your chances, now it's my turn."
Palpatine was about to give the order but at the last second Anakin grabs his hand.
"Anakin?" Palpatine asks.
"Let's give him a chance." Anakin said wondering what he had planned.
Swinging one of its arms Shun uses the Air scooter to dodge the attack and race towards it.
Bending water from a large fountain Shun froze its legs in an attempt to trap it.
Roaring the Zillo Beast breaks free from the ice and the chunks were flying at Shun.
Jumping off the air scooter, Shun thrust his hands forward and metal spikes shot out slicing the ice.
Bending his metal bracelets, Shun shot a cable out that wrapped around one of the spikes on the Zillo Beast's head.
Swinging in Shun released blasts of fire that ran up the Beast's body.
Roaring the Zillo Beast swung an arm forcing Shun to let go but as a result, another arm swatted Shun sending him crashing into a roof.
"Shun!" Obi-Wan gasps.
Groaning Shun was slow to get up but before he could react a giant arm reached out and grabbed him.
Lifting him up into the air the Zillo Beast squeezed tighter.
Cringing Shun was being crushed in the Zillo Beast's grip.
Closing his eyes Shun knew there was only one way out of this. To save everyone and stop the Zillo Beast.
As the beast moved in about to finish this Shun unleased a powerful Force Repulse freeing him from the beast's grip and sending it skidding back.
Landing across from it Shun opened his eyes revealing he had entered the Avatar State.
Slamming his feet to the ground giant pillars of earth and metal shot out of the ground and rained down on the Zillo Beast hitting it multiple times.
Shrieking the Beast struggles to escape Shun unleashes a torrent of flame hitting the Zillo Beast in the chest and preventing it from moving.
As the intense light from the heat caused everyone to cringe Palpatine looked at this in shock and disbelief.
"This power…it's incredible." Palpatine said with a sinister grin on his face.
Shifting its attention toward Shun, the Zillo Beast flung its head towards him, but Shun dodges the attack by spinning out of the way.
Jumping up Shun raced along the buildings across from it.
With the beast straight ahead, Shun makes a powerful concentrated sphere of air before throwing it into the air.
Bending the air above them a giant twister descended from the sky and crashed down atop the Zillo Beast sending them both up into the air much to everyone's shock.
"It's flying?!" Padme gasps.
"Shun." Jinora said amazed.
Charging up lightning Shun fires several bolts into the twister causing the beast's screams to echo from inside.
Launching himself high into the air, Shun appears over the eye of the storm and the Zillo Beast was straight below him. Holding his arms up to the sky Shun bent earth, fire, air, and water into a giant sphere of all 4 elements.
Diving straight down Shun slams the attack down on the Zillo Beast's chest causing it to scream in pain before crashing to the ground creating a giant dust cloud.
"Did you know he could do all this?" Mace asks looking at Obi-Wan.
Pausing Obi-Wan remembered Shun's eyes glowed the same way when Master Tapal died on the Malevolence.
The power Shun showed that day was unlike anything he had ever seen. And now Shun had used it to stop the Zillo Beast.
As the dust began to clear, Shun bent the earth around the beast preventing it from moving.
Moaning weakly the Zillo Beast looks to Shun who was slowly approaching it.
Reaching out his hand, Shun put it to the beast's forehead much to the beast's surprise.
"It's going to be okay. Your suffering is over" Shun said in a trance-like tone and slowly the Zillo Beast's eyes began to close before it fell unconscious.
Exiting the Avatar State, Shun's eyes returned to normal.
Groaning Shun looked at the beast and frowned.
"Just hang on a little longer big fella." Shun said.
Turning around Shun approached the Senators and Jedi.
"Alright let's get one thing straight. When this guy and I are giving any of you the same advice, don't argue with us. Just shut up and take it." Shun said gesturing to Windu.
"Agreed." Windu nods.
The next day, we see the Zillo Beast being loaded onto a ship.
"That's it. Don't worry they're not going to hurt you." Shun said as the beast slowly walked aboard.
As Shun, Jinora, Yoda, Padme, Windu, Obi-Wan and Anakin watched it being taken away Palpatine and Mas Amedda approached them.
"What is going on? Where is the beast going?" Mas asks.
"We are taking it to its new home." Padme declared.
"New home?" Palpatine raised an eyebrow.
"Yes Senator Jinora managed to locate the perfect home for the Zillo Beast. It will live out the rest of its life in peace. No one bothering it." Obi-Wan declares.
"I'm sorry but when were you planning on running this decision by me?" Palpatine asks.
"We weren't. This is a joint mission with the Gray Order. You see Chancellor since you were unable to control or complete what was necessary for the beast you lost jurisdiction." Padme said.
"And when Shun proved he was the only one the beast would listen to we decided it would be best for everyone to let it go." Jinora said.
"But what about our armies? They need that." Palpatine reminds.
"No they don't." Shun said walking over. "They don't need to kill a creature to win a fight. All our clones need is a little strategy, their skills, and us leading them and making sure they don't fall in battle." Shun said.
"It is not wise to go against the Senate." Mas insists.
"I'm not going against anyone. This doesn't have to be a problem unless someone makes it one." Shun glares.
"Are you threatening me young Jedi?" Mas glares back.
"Not a threat a promise. If you want that beast you're going to get through me and I know for a fact you can't take me Hornhead." Shun mocks.
"Very well young man. You want to be responsible for this beast then by all means. Whatever happens to it will be your responsibility." Palpatine said interfering.
"Supreme Chancellor?" Mas asks confused.
"You really think one Beast's life is worth putting our army in danger? Many will die because of this choice you're making." Palpatine warns.
"An Avatar's duty is protecting life. Be it human or beast. Our Avatar has chosen to protect the Zillo Beast and I doubt he will change his mind any time soon." Jinora said.
"So if you want to keep winning and not lose any more clones I suggest you two run back to the Senate and do your jobs." Shun suggests.
"Perhaps we will." Palpatine said turning away to leave.
As he left Shun felt that hint of venom in Palpatine's voice again.
'That boy is really becoming a thorn in my side.' Palpatine thought tightening his fist.
Clearly he had plans for the Zillo Beast if they could kill it. And then Shun steps in and ruins it.
He may not have gotten the Zillo Beast but he found out about something that could be even stronger than it.
"So where is the Beast being sent?" Anakin asks.
"That's for me and Jinora to know and everyone else never to find out." Shun smirks walking to the ship.
"Sorry it's for the beast's safety. Can't have the wrong people knowing where it is and only Shun and I know where it is." Jinora shrugs before joining him.
"That boy can be such a pain." Mace shook his head.
"Oh I think you can cut him a break just this once Master Windu. After all you wanted to send the beast to a place it could call home as well and now Shun is doing just that." Obi-Wan said.
