Ch.58: Blinded by the Light

All of my life, I had worn glasses. From the time I turned five, they had been a part of my life. The cleaning, the putting them away at night. I had gotten used to it. Unlike Twilight, whose hindrance was her right eye, mine was the left. I had stigmatism in both eyes and was nearsighted in my left.

When I arrived in Pandestria, an important priority for Cloudy and Igneous had been to get me set up medically. But the eye doctor, until that fateful February day, had remained an unknown. This was due to the fact that I had already had an eye exam in April. Pandestria's Universal Healthcare did allow for two visits a year, but I decided to wait.

February 4th, 2013, was the day. I had chosen to take the day off, as I knew due to the pressure, they put on your eyes in an eye exam, my sight would not be adequate for school.

Smiling, Cloudy drove me down the familiar streets as we headed to the practice of Dr. Goldeneye, a renowned female doctor of 23 years. The secretary checked me in, and I got to work on the typical paperwork associated with a first-time medical visit.

"David?" I soon heard, as an older doctor assistant greeted me. He looked like an old-time biker, one that enjoyed some old-fashioned comradery with the boys. I followed him to the back.

I will spare you the details of the visit, as they are not important. What was is the conversation Dr. Goldeneye and I had at the end of the visit.

She straightened up in her chair and sighed.

"David, I hate to inform you that I have bad news for you. To put it bluntly, you are losing sight in your left eye. It will not happen soon- you as it stands do have another ten, maybe fifteen years before it happens. But I did want to let you know."

I smiled and thanked her for the honesty. Aeon whispered to me.

"Worry not, David."

I heeded his advice, and Cloudy and I left. In our leaving, I failed to notice that Filthy Rich was there. He himself needed his eyes checked. He stood as we left and called Dr. Goldeneye over. She had been his eye doctor for her entire tenure, and the two got on well.

"I know it may be unethical to ask, but can you tell me what came of his results today?"

Dr. Goldeneye agreed once they were back in her office. Filthy grinned.

"To help the less fortunate- I will pay a hefty price. I will have to call Igneous later- David does have Spring Break next month, and perhaps, I can help him."

Soon, those words became true.

But it was time first to reignite the flames of love.
