Chapter Six
Meet The Parents
Sunday May 12th, 1985
"Michael, are you decent?" Karen called from downstairs.
"Yeah, mom." Mike said.
The eldest sibling of the Wheeler family stood in front of the mirror as he straightened up the collar on his dark blue polo shirt, which went well with his jeans and white Nike sneakers. He took a deep breath as he prepared for this evening. Not only it's Sunday dinner at the Wheeler household, but tonight, Mike has invited El over for dinner so he can introduce her to his family. Mike was starting to get a little nervous about tonight. What will his mother say to El? Will they like her? Is his mother going to embarrass him in front of El?
"Okay, Mike. Just relax. You invited El over for dinner so she can meet mom and dad and Holly. Oh, shit. I just hope that mom doesn't embarrass me. Please God, don't let mom embarrass me." Mike said to himself in the mirror.
Mike stepped away from the mirror and left the bathroom as he heads downstairs and made his way into the kitchen.
"Well, aren't you looking handsome." Nancy said as she sees Mike.
Karen looked up to notice her son in the kitchen. She was dressed up with an apron tied around her waist while she was checking on the fried chicken.
"Oh, my God! You're so handsome!" Karen said, smiling at Mike.
"Mom, please." Mike said.
"I need to take pictures of you and your girlfriend." Karen said.
"Mom, there's no need for you to take pictures." Mike said. "Do you need to take pictures?"
"Hey, that's what happens when you invite your girlfriend over for dinner." Nancy grinned at Mike before she ate an apple slice.
"And why aren't you with Jonathan?" Mike asked.
"Because he's spending time with his mother and Will. Besides, I wouldn't miss this night just to see mom embarrass the hell out of you with your baby pictures." Nancy smirked at Mike.
"Goddamn it, Nancy." Mike said.
"Watch your mouth, young man! This is a very special night. No need for you to be cursing." Karen said.
"Sorry, mom." Mike said.
Holly entered the kitchen with her teddy bear as she walked over to Karen.
"Mommy, can I have a soda?" Holly asked.
"What?" Karen asked.
"Can I have a soda?" Holly asked.
"No, you can't have a soda, Hol." Karen said.
"But daddy said I could have one." Holly said as Karen raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, really?" Karen asked as she stepped out of the kitchen and entered the living room to find Ted sitting on his La-Z-Boy while watching 60 Minutes. "Ted? Ted?!"
"What?" Ted asked while his eyes were glued to the television.
"Did you tell Holly that she could have a can of soda?" Karen asked.
"Yeah. I said it was okay." Ted said.
"She can't have soda, Ted." Karen said.
"Let her have a can of soda." Ted said.
"No, Ted. Forget it." Karen said.
"Are you two arguing with each other?" Nancy called.
"No, Nancy!" Karen exclaimed before turning her attention to Ted. "Well, get ready because Mike's girlfriend will be coming over in a few minutes. So get up off of your ass and make yourself useful for once in your life.."
Ted groaned a bit as he got up from off of the La-Z-Boy and followed Karen into the kitchen to find Nancy, Mike and Holly sitting at the kitchen table.
"Mike, you look nice today." Holly said as she noticed Mike outfit.
'Uh… thanks, Holly." Mike said.
"Mike." Holly said.
"Yeah, Hol." Mike said.
"Is El your girlfriend?" Holly asked.
"Yeah. El is my girlfriend." Mike said as he walked over to the refrigerator to grab himself a can of Coke.
"Mike." Holly said.
"Yeah?" Mike said before he sips his soda.
"Do you kiss El like Jonathan kisses Nancy?" Holly suddenly asked him.
He almost did a spit take after hearing her question, luckily he swallowed his soda before he could answer. "Well… uh… you see… uh… how should I answer this? Yeah, we kiss. We kiss because we're dating, that's what boyfriends and girlfriends do. They kiss."
Mike tries to keep himself from thinking about El's soft lips pressed against his.
"Do you and El have sex just like Jonathan and Nancy?" Holly said as Mike immediately does a spit take while Nancy looks on in horror and Karen and Ted looked at both Mike and Nancy.
"What?!" Ted exclaimed.
"Where did you learn that word?" Karen asked.
"One of your magazines, mommy." Holly said.
"Oh, God." Karen said.
"Holly, El and I are too young to be having… you know. I'm sure that Nancy and Jonathan knows better." Mike said as Nancy glared at him.
The doorbell rang.
"I got it." Mike said.
He left the kitchen and walked over to the door and opened it, only to see El standing in front of him, in an outfit that wasn't too formal, or too casual, but it still made her look nice. Someone, probably Joyce, had done her hair even. Mike smiled at El as he guided her inside.
"You look really pretty." Mike said as El blushed in front of him.
"Thanks. You look handsome." El said as Mike closed the door behind her.
"Nervous?" Mike asked.
"A little." El said. "Are you nervous?"
"Yeah. There's no telling what my mom is going to do to embarrass me." Mike said as El giggled a bit.
The two made their way into the kitchen as Karen, Ted, Nancy and Holly noticed El.
"Mom, dad. I would like for you all to meet my girlfriend El." Mike said.
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler." El said.
"Oh, you must be El." Karen said as she approached El and gave her a hug. "You're even more prettier than the girls in Mike's class."
Mike pinched the bridge of his nose to keep things from being more awkward.
"Thank you, Mrs. Wheeler." El said, smiling at Karen.
"Oh, please. Call me Karen." Karen said.
"Karen. Okay." El said.
"This is Mike's father Ted and this is Holly. You probably know Nancy." Karen said.
"Hello, Jane." Ted said as he shook El's hand.
"Dad, she prefers to be called El. I've told you that before." Mike said.
"Jane is your real name, right?" Ted asked.
"Yes, but I prefer El." El said.
"I'll try to remember that." Ted said.
"What would you like to drink, dear?" Karen asked.
"Tea, please." El said.
"Alright. While I get El's drink, Mike set up the table with Nancy." Karen said.
"Can I help?" El asked.
"Sure, sweetie." Karen said as she smiled as El.
As El gets ready to help Mike and Nancy set up the table in the dining room, Holly walks over to El and tugged at her skirt to get her attention. El turned to Holly and noticed the bubbly little 5-year-old.
"Hi, El. I'm Holly, I'm Mike's sister." Holly said.
"Hi, Holly. It's really nice to meet you." El said as she smiled at Holly
"You're really pretty." Holly said as showed her teddy bear to El. "This is Mr. Stuffles. He's my bear."
"Nice bear." El said.
"Do you have a teddy bear?" Holly asked.
"Yeah." El said.
"Holly, I know that you're trying to show El your bear, let her set up the table with Mike and Nancy. Mike, after you're finished setting up the table, why don't you give El a tour around the house?" Karen asked.
"Sure thing, mom." Mike said.
Once Mike and El finished helping Nancy set the table, Mike gave El the tour around the house, once he gave her the tour, he couldn't help but notice how relaxed she'd become .
"So far, what do you think?" Mike asked.
"They love me." El said.
"I'm glad that they like you, especially Holly." Mike said.
"She's adorable." El grinned.
El began to look around the house and started to look at the photos that were hanging on the wall. She noticed a photo of Mike and his family, then a picture of Mike, Nancy and Holly until she made her way into Mike's room and looked around as she looked at the collection of Star Wars toys that he has and a Return of the Jedi poster that was hanging on his wall. While she looked around the room, she began to notice a framed photo that was sitting on top of his dresser. A smile appeared on her face as she noticed the photo of the two of them together at the Snow Ball.
"I see that you've noticed the photo." Mike said as El turned around to see him enter the room before she picked up the framed photo. "That was the best night of our lives."
"Yeah, it was. I couldn't stop thinking about it." El said.
"Me too. We had a very special moment together, until I saw Dustin dancing with my sister." Mike said as El giggled a bit.
"At least Will was dancing with this girl named Jennifer." El said. "She really likes him."
"Yeah. And of course Lucas and Max. Oh, boy. They couldn't keep their eyes off of each other. As for me, I couldn't take my eyes off of you…" Mike said as he moved closer towards El. "...or my lips off of you.
Mike gazed deeply into El's beautiful brown eyes before he leaned in to kiss her. But they broke apart after they hear the sound of someone clearing their throat. Mike and El looked over to see Nancy standing in the doorway.
"Guys?" Nancy asked, crossing her arms at Mike and El.
"Sorry, Nance." Mike apologized.
"Sorry." El said.
"I just came by to let you two know that dinner's ready. I hope you're ready to eat before you two end up giving mom a grandchild at a young age." Nancy said.
"Nancy!" Mike exclaimed.
"What? I'm just saying." Nancy said.
Mike, El and Nancy head downstairs as they arrive in the dining room. Nancy sat down at the table while Mike held the chair out for El.
"Need anything else?" Mike asked.
"No, thank you. I'm good." El said as Mike smiled at her before he sat down next to her.
"He is so polite. Why couldn't you be like that, Ted?" Karen asked while Ted drank his iced tea.
"The chicken looks wonderful, Karen." El said politely.
"Thank you, El. I'm pretty sure that Hopper knows how to make fried chicken." Karen said as she passed around a bowl filled with mashed potatoes.
"No. The only fried chicken that Hopper usually gets is the ones in the bucket." El said as Nancy passed the bowl of mashed potatoes over to her.
"Oh, you mean KFC." Nancy said.
"KFC?" El asked, looking confused.
"Kentucky Fried Chicken. That's what it stands for." Nancy said.
"Oh." El said.
"Well, my chicken is finger lickin' good." Karen said.
"Mom, please." Mike said as he passed around the freshly baked rolls.
"God, Mom. That was so bad." Nancy said while El giggled a bit.
"I'm surprised she's never heard of KFC before." Ted put in.
"Ted, she was a prisoner most of her life, thanks to Brenner." Karen told Ted, glaring at him as El almost choked on her piece of chicken.
"How did…" El said.
"Joyce." Karen explained.
El mumbled something Mike didn't catch.
"What was that?" Mike asked, looking at El.
"Shit." El said as Mike's eyes widened in surprise from hearing her curse like that.
"Language." Ted said while eating his chicken.
"I can't believe she told you guys." El almost yelled, struggling to keep her voice under control.
"I know, sweetie. I'm sorry. It was bound to come out sooner or later." Karen said.
"Nice job." Ted said.
"Shut up, Ted. El, please don't be mad at us and don't be mad at Joyce. We just want you to feel welcomed. Hopper's giving you a good life and you have Mike." Karen said.
Mike held El's hand and looked at her.
"She's right." Mike said.
This managed to calm her down.
"Thanks." El said.
"You're welcome." Mik said.
"Besides, I saw the picture of you and Mike at the Snow Ball. No wonder you looked familiar." Karen said.
"Wait, you saw the photo?" Mike asked his mom.
"I did. You both looked so happy." Karen said, smiling at Mike.
"We were." El said.
"She still has a lot to learn." Ted said before he sips his iced tea.
"Dad, leave her alone." Nancy warned.
"This Brenner guy kept her like a slave most of her life, Nance-" Ted began.
Mike put a hand on El's shoulder in an effort to keep her from doing something stupid.
"Ted?" Karen asked.
"Yes, dear?" Ted replied.
"Shut up and eat your chicken before you say anything else. We're trying to have a lovely dinner and make sure that El has a great time with us. So don't blow this for Michael." Karen said as Ted starts eating his chicken. "Sorry about that. Ted tends to have a big mouth."
El giggled a bit.
"See? She's having a great time. Let's forget about talking about El's past and have a great night." Karen said.
"Agreed." Mike and Nancy both said.
"Besides, El, I want to show you some pictures of Mike. Especially his baby photos of him." Karen said.
"Oh, shit! Mom!" Mike exclaimed.
"Language!" Ted and Karen both said to Mike.
After dinner, Mike and Nancy cleared the table and helped Karen with the dishes while Ted was asleep on his La-Z-Boy while A Death in California was playing on ABC. Luckily, Karen had it set to record on the VCR in case he falls asleep. Karen enters the dining room while carrying a photo album, only to find El bonding with Holly and playing with her dolls.
"Holly, you should be getting ready for bed." Karen said.
"But mommy, I want to play with my dolls with El." Holly whined.
"I know and it's almost 10." Karen said.
"I'll get her in her pajamas, mom." Nancy said.
"Thanks, Nance." Karen said as she sat down next to El.
"Don't worry, Hol. We'll play with your dolls another time." El said.
"Promise?" Holly said as El smiled at her.
"Promise." El said. "Karen, is it alright if I help Nancy with Holly?"
"Sweetie, you don't have to." Karen explained, surprised.
"I know, but I want to. Besides, it'll make things go by a lot faster." El said.
"Okay. Then after that, I'm showing you the album." Karen said.
"Deal." El said.
Both El and Nancy went upstairs with Holly to her room to help her get ready for bed. While Nancy got Holly into her pajamas, El was looking at the teddy bear that was laying on Holly's bed. Nancy looked over at El as she continued to examine the teddy bear.
"I got that for Holly after she turned 3. I gave it a name." Nancy said.
"What did you call the teddy bear?" El asked.
"Mr. Stuffles." Nancy said.
"Mr. Stuffles?" El asked.
"Yeah. I know. It sounds like a goofy name, but she liked it." Nancy said.
Once Holly was dressed, El got her tucked into bed, and was singing a lullaby. Meanwhile, Mike was talking with Karen.
"Why did they think-" Mike began.
"Michael, it was going to come out eventually." Karen said.
"What if she has nightmares about her time in the lab?" Mike asked.
"We'll all be there to help her through it, you in particular." Karen said.
"Holly might ask about it when she's older." Mike said.
"I know, and we'll have to explain it to her as best we can." Karen said.
"That won't be easy." Mike sighed.
"I'm sure it won't." Karen said as she sipped her cup of coffee.
"I don't know everything they did to her." Mike said. Karen hugged her son, knowing, or having some idea, at least, of what he was thinking.
"A counselor might be able to-" Mike said.
"What kind of counselor would believe her?" Karen asked
"I don't know. I'm sure somebody would help her out. But you know, she's afraid to talk to somebody else about it." Mike said.
El and Nancy head downstairs and enter the dining room until Karen and Mike noticed them.
"Hey, you're back. Did you put Holly to bed?" Karen asked.
"Yeah. You should've seen El. She was a natural. She sang a lullaby that Joyce taught her when she sang to Jonathan and Will when they were babies." Nancy said.
"That's good. Anyway, there's some cherry cheesecake in the kitchen if you want any dessert." Karen said.
"Sounds good. El, do you want a slice?" Mike asked.
"Yes." El replied.
"Alright, I'll get us a slice." Mike said as him and Nancy head into the kitchen, leaving El with Karen as the young girl walked over to the table and sat down next to Karen as she opened the photo album.
"While they're getting the dessert, we can take some time looking at the album." Karen said as she points at the first photo. Now, this one is from after he was born. Yeah, he was an impatient little fella."
El giggled as she looked at the baby photo of Mike. Karen watched as she adored the baby photos of Mike. El began to imagine having children with Mike in the future. The teenage girl then comes across a baby picture of Mike, laying on the changing table... naked.
"I had to get that photo of him right after he had his bath." Karen said as El giggled.
"Cute. Make me think of having kids with Mike." El said.
"Think you'll name one of them after your mother?" Karen asked.
"Definitely." El said as she smiled at Karen.
Mike entered the dining room holding two slices of cheesecake as he approached the table. His eyes widened in shock as he saw El and Karen looking at his baby photos.
"OH, MY GOD! MOM! You're showing El my baby photos?! And I'm naked in them! What are you doing to me?! Are you trying to kill me before high school?!" Mike hollered.
"Oh, relax, Michael. As a mother, it's my job to embarrass you." Karen said.
"But to show my girlfriend my baby photos?" Mike asked.
"They're cute." El said as Mike groaned.
"It does make her think of having children with you one day." Karen told him.
"Yeah?" Mike asked.
El nodded.
Both then explained the counseling idea
.
"I'd want to open up to someone but-" El said.
"Sweetie, we'll be there for you every step of the way." Karen promised.
Mike held El's hand and smiled at her. "It'll be fine."
"Thank you." El said.
"You're welcome. Now, let's continue to look at Mike's baby photos." Karen said.
"Oh, God! Mom!" Mike whined. Can we not look at the baby photos? It's bad enough that El saw my baby butt."
"Relax, Mike. You're still cute." El grinned as she kissed Mike on the cheek.
