Daryl looked around the corner when he looked to see if there were any guards in the hallway then he looked back at Carol and Caroline. They had been searching the hallways for any sign of Hornsby, but most of the cells they had found were empty.
"Hold up," Caroline said after finding the door to one of the armories and she looked at the keypad near the door.
"What'd you find?" Daryl asked, walking to her.
"Mercer had put me on rotation for the holdin' area and he showed me where all the armories are."
"So?"
"He had me memories all the passcodes in case I needed to get in."
"Do you remember the passcode to this one?" Carol asked.
"Yeah," she said with a nod and Caroline pushed the buttons. A soft buzzing sounds filled the air as she opened the door and Daryl checked to see if anyone was inside.
"You'd think they'd post a guard in here," Daryl said after he flipped the switch. The lights came on as they walked in the room.
"Or have security cameras," Carol said as she checked for them.
"Mercer said they didn't need 'em because you need a passcode to get in here," Caroline explained.
"What would stop someone from takin' one of these guns home with 'em?" Daryl asked.
"Honor system."
"Like that works."
Caroline looked at the shelves of weapons when she found some stun grenades and smoke grenades and she handed them to Daryl and Carol. They left the room then Caroline closed the door and she heard a soft clicking sound.
"Let's go," Daryl said and they headed down the hallway. Daryl had his rifle in his hands as they went around the corner, but the hallway was empty and he frowned. "What the hell?"
"Like I said. Milton's got everyone out rounding up our friends," Carol said with a frown.
They headed down the hallway when Daryl looked around the corner and he saw two guards standing near a door at the end of the hallway. Caroline moved around him as she looked at the guards. She removed the stun grenades from her belt as she armed the stun grenades, tossed the stun grenades down the hallway and the stun grenades landed with a small bounce on the floor.
"What the hell?" one of the guards said as they walked toward the stun grenades and the stun grenades went off. The guards' bodies twitched then fell to the floor as Carol, Daryl and Caroline headed down the hallway. Daryl checked the guards to see if they were alive while Carol and Caroline headed for the door and Carol moved the small sliding door back. She looked in the cell as her stomach churned and Caroline went to see what she was looking at after Carol moved back.
"Damn," Caroline whispered. She moved back after Daryl tapped her back and she moved back. He looked in the cell as his stomach clenched and he sighed.
"Glad Judith didn't see that," Daryl said while Sabastian, now a Walker, sat on the floor and was eating someone. Sabastian turned at the sound of Daryl's voice and slowly stood. Sabastian snapped his teeth while stumbling to the door and Daryl reached for his knife. His fingers wrapped around the handle and his fingers slid into the holes in the handle. Sabastian snarled and snapped at Daryl while Daryl tried to find a way to stab Sabastian in the head and Caroline knelt down next to Daryl. "What're you doin'?"
"Pickin' the lock," Caroline said as she removed the lockpicking kit. "Just be ready when I get the door open."
"You better hurry. These guys aren't going to be out for long," Carol said as she looked at the guards.
Caroline nodded as she started picking the lock. A few minutes later, she heard a soft click, placed the lockpicking equipment away, closed the case then stood up. She helped drag the guards down the hallway while Daryl looked at Sabastian then Daryl moved back. He reached for the door handle when the door handle moved and Sabastian opened the door.
"What the hell?!" Daryl said, watching Sabastian heading into the hallway.
"Did he just open the door?!" Carol asked with a shocked look on her face.
"Damn," Caroline whispered.
Daryl moved back slightly as Sabastian headed for him and Sabastian grabbed at him. Daryl got out of the way as they headed down the hallway and Daryl tried to figure out what to do next. Sabastian snarled and moved closer when his body stiffened and he fell to the ground. Daryl saw the knife sticking out of the back of Sabastian's head then he looked at Carol and she smiled.
"Thanks," he said and she nodded. Carol and Caroline walked over to him when Carol removed the knife out of Sabastian's head, cleaned the knife off with a clean cloth she removed from her jeans pocket. They headed down the hallway then around the corner and Daryl slid the small sliding door back.
"Well, look who it is," Lance said with a grin. He walked to the door then stopped and Daryl glared at him. "Here to kill me?"
"No, we're here to rescue you," Carol said after Daryl stepped back and Hornsby arched his eyebrows up.
"Why would you rescue me?!"
"Because you're the only one I could think of who knows where Milton's taken our friends."
"Hold up," Caroline said as she walked to Carol and Hornsby gave her a pleased look. "I need you to tell us the truth. You had those maintenance workers killed and changed into Walkers either as a distraction while someone got you outta here or you thought they'd kill Milton and they would have to let you out."
"A little of both," Lance said with a sigh. "Turns out she found those two idiots I hired. She made me watch as she had them fed to her son. Still can hear their screams."
"That must have been what he was eating when we found him," Carol said.
"Did she tell you she took our friends?" Daryl asked.
"She didn't have to tell me. I know where they are," Lance said.
"You know where they are?" Caroline asked.
"That's what I just said."
"But the only way you'll tell us is if we get you out of there," Carol said, rolling her eyes.
"Always knew you were a smart lady," Lance said with a grin then frowned at the dark look Daryl was giving him. "Are you going to get me out of here?"
"Hold on," Caroline said. Daryl moved away as she knelt down near the door and she opened the lockpick kit. She started to pick the lock while Hornsby frowned and he tried to see what she was doing.
"What is she doing?"
"She's picking the lock," Carol said.
"Where did she learn how to do that?"
"I know shit," Caroline said with a grin as the voice of her lover's brother filled her head.
"We have the time for her do to that? What if the guards show up?" Lance asked, looking at Daryl.
"Only saw two guards," Daryl said.
"Milton has the others looking for and capturing our friends," Carol explained.
"She took my kids and my dog."
"Damn," Lance whispered.
A few minutes later, the lock clicked open and Hornsby stood back as the door opened. Daryl walked in the cell with the rifle pointed at Hornsby held his hands up in surrender. Hornsby saw the anger in Daryl's eyes while they headed for the door and Hornsby left the room. Daryl lightly pushed Hornsby in front of them as they walked down the hallway, but Hornsby stopped when he saw Sabastian's body on the floor. He headed to the doorway to Sabastian's cell when he saw the bodies on the floor and he swallowed the bile rolling up his throat.
"Pamela," Lance whispered when he saw the machete on the cell floor and he left the cell.
"Put that down," Daryl said as he pointed the rifle at Hornsby.
"I'm not going to use this on you."
"Then who are you going to use it on?" Carol asked and Lance looked at Sabastian.
A short time later, Daryl led the way while they headed by the buildings and Hornsby pointed to a truck sitting near one of the buildings. Two guards were near the truck and Daryl motioned for Carol, Caroline and Hornsby to crouch down. They carefully headed for the truck when Daryl opened the driver's side door and Hornsby opened the passenger side door. They got in the cab of the truck then closed the doors and Caroline tossed a smoke grenade. The smoke grenade exploded as the smoke rose in the air and the guards ran toward the smoke.
"Asshole," Caroline said and she got into the back of the truck. Carol was in the back of the truck as Caroline closed the back of the truck then went to sit next to Carol. They heard Daryl start the engine of the truck as he steered the truck down the road and Caroline saw the two guards running after the truck. She flipped them off as Carol laughed and the truck headed around the corner.
The woods
The low light of the small campfire lit up the darkness while Hornsby sat on a flat top rock and he watched Caroline add a few sticks to the fire and Hornsby yawned. Daryl was on watch and Carol was cleaning her knife.
"Where'd you learn how to make a fire?" Lance asked and Caroline glanced at him.
"My dad taught me," she said with a shrug of her shoulders.
"All my dad taught me was how to read a balance sheet and made deals."
They sat in silence as the light from the dim fire flickered in the darkness and Carol placed the knife in the holder on her belt
"How'd you meet the Governor?" Caroline asked.
"That's a long story," he said with a sigh.
"I wouldn't mind hearing it," Carol said.
Thinking for a few seconds, Hornsby started talking about how he met Pamela and Carol and Caroline nodded their heads from time-to-time.
The Commonwealth
The doors slid open while Pamela and two guards walked down the hallway and she glared at the guards standing in the hallway.
"Report," she growled and the guards stood at attention.
"We received a call a few minutes ago about a break-in," the guard said.
"How could this be possible?"
The guards glanced at each other as they tried to decide to tell her about there not being enough guards and she glared at them.
"What was taken?" Pamela asked.
"Several smoke and stun grenades were taken, Ma'am," the guard said.
"How were the able to get hold of the grenades?"
"They shouldn't have. Only guards with the passcodes can get into the armories."
"Which means one of you took them."
"No, Ma'am, we didn't!" the other guard said.
"What else?"
"Um… Mister Hornsby is missing."
"He's what?!"
"He's missing."
"Which means this wasn't a break-in as much as a prison break."
"Yes," Ma'am," the first guard said with a nod.
"Is there anything else?"
"Well, we did find this."
She followed the guards then stopped and her heart fell to her stomach.
On the floor were pieces of Sabastian's remains, a bloody machete and blood. She slowly walked closer when she knelt down and she saw something shiny sticking out of the remains. She picked up the gold coin Hornsby used to make decisions with and she growled, cupping the coin in her right hand.
"Ma'am?" the guard asked as she stood up, turned to glare at them then Pamela stormed down the hallway with tears rolling down her cheeks.
Daryl watched them when he felt the air turning ice cold and he looked up at the sky. The darkness turned bright green as he sighed and lightly shook his head. The sound of drums, flutes and chanting surrounded him as he leaned against the trunk of a tree and he crossed one ankle over the other.
"What do you want?" Daryl grumbled.
"Just want you to know yer friends and yer kids are safe," Jeb said as he appeared next to him.
"Do you know where they are?"
"Some of them."
"Why didn't you stop this?"
"Why didn't I do a lot of shit? The answer is because I'm not all powerful."
"Hmph."
"I did tell you that you might lose more people you love."
"I haven't lost anyone."
"Not yet."
"Why can't you just tell me what the hell you're talkin' about?!"
"Wish I could."
"Hmph."
"You did do one thing I told you. You kept the woman you love and yer sister with you."
"I can't do this without 'em."
Jeb saw the truth in Daryl's eyes as he nodded and Daryl sighed.
"How are things with you and yer woman?" Jeb asked and Daryl frowned.
"You know about that?" Daryl asked.
"It ain't that hard to figure out."
"We're good."
"If I had known you back then, I would've made sure you never got together with that bitch."
Daryl knew he was talking about Leah and he sighed.
"You know where she went?" Daryl asked.
"Yeah. Want me to tell you?"
"Nope."
"Good. Wasn't gonna tell you anyway."
"Hmph."
"Though, if I had kept you away from her, you wouldn't have that dog of yers."
"Is he ok?"
"I said they're safe. Him, too. Now, mind telling me why you didn't follow the arrows I made?"
"Didn't trust 'em."
"Well, you were right not to. It was a trap. Those idiots were waitin' in ambush fer you."
Daryl heard the truth in his words as he nodded then the air and sky returned to normal and the chanting, drums and flutes stopped. Daryl kicked off the trunk of the tree as he walked to Caroline and sat down on the ground.
"Do you really understand what's at stake here? It's not just your friends' lives that are at stake. There are thousands of lives as well. Men. Women. Children. They will all suffer if you keep this up," Lance said and they gave him a puzzled look.
"Aren't they suffering now?" Carol asked.
"No, they're not. And that it because they're following the rules and not questioning things."
"But people are missing."
"You don't have any proof of that. Just names on a list."
"What about what Sabastian said about his mother riggin' the lottery?" Caroline asked.
"Ok. That might have been true, but all lotteries are rigged."
"Her son blackmailed people," Carol said.
"It happens," Lance said with a shrug when they heard the sound of engines and lights flashed between the trees.
"Son of a bitch," Daryl grumbled and he, Lance, Carol and Caroline stood. Caroline put out the small fire as they headed into the darkness and the lights flashed between the trees. Daryl led the way as they ran by the trees and Carol gasped when Hornsby pulled her toward the trees.
"Scream and I'll kill you," Lance whispered. Carol glared at him as she tried to get away and he tightened his grip on her upper right arm. Flashbacks to when Ed would grab onto her made her fight harder and she kicked him in his shin. "Shit!"
Carol pulled away as she ran by the trees and Hornsby ran after her. She wondered where Caroline and Daryl were when she saw the lights flashing around the trees and she ducked behind a large oak. The soldiers moved by her as she glanced out at them and she tried hard to calm her heartbeat.
"Where are you?" Carol thought when she thought she saw red eyes shining in the darkness and she heard the soft sounds of flutes, drums and chanting. She headed into the darkness as the feeling she was heading in the right direction filled her head and she smiled.
"Carol," made her stop and she could just see Daryl standing near a tree. He was lit by moonlight as she carefully headed for him and he held his arms out for her. She ran the last few feet as she hugged him and Daryl kissed the side of her head.
"Where's Caroline?" Carol asked.
"She's sittin' on Hornsby," he said and they walked off. A few minutes later, Carol saw Caroline sitting on top of an unconscious Hornsby as Carol smiled and Daryl slid his arms around her.
"We saw him draggin' you off," Caroline said.
"Who knocked him out?" Carol asked.
"Asshole knocked himself out. Ran into a tree," Daryl said, pointing to the tree near Caroline. Carol softly laughed when they heard a soft moan and Hornsby opened his eyes.
"Ow," Lance whispered then he realized someone was sitting on him.
"You better be grateful it's me and not a Walker," Caroline said and he sighed.
"I am. Mind getting off of me?"
"Not until my brother tells me she's unharmed."
"She might have a few bruises from trying to get away from me. Other than that, she's fine."
"It that true?" Daryl asked and Carol nodded. "Let him up."
"How did you run into a tree?" Carol asked Hornsby while Caroline helped him to his feet.
"Was chasing after you when this thing ran in front of me," Lance said as he made sure his nose or mouth wasn't bleeding.
"What sort of something?"
"Not sure. All I remember it was really big and had bright red eyes."
He noticed the look Daryl, Carol and Caroline was giving each other and he frowned.
"Sounds like you know what I am talking about."
"Maybe," Caroline said.
"Before I passed out, someone told me to leave you alone or I'll end up like Sabastian."
"Then you better do what they say," Carol said.
"You need me," he said with a smug look.
"He's right. He's the only one who knows where the others are," Daryl said.
"We're gonna have to make sure he doesn't try anythin'," Caroline said and Daryl removed the zip ties from his jeans pocket. Hornsby rolled his eyes as Daryl tied Hornsby's arms behind his back then Daryl pushed him forward. They started walking down the trail when they saw the abandoned jeep and Daryl looked at Carol. She smiled as she nodded and Daryl pushed Hornsby toward the jeep. Caroline helped Hornsby in the jeep as they sat in the back and Carol and Daryl sat in the front. Daryl started the engine when he put the jeep in gear and the jeep headed down the road.
"Ok, where are our friends?" Carol asked as she looked back at Hornsby.
"They were most likely sent to one of the outposts," Lance said.
"Why?" Daryl asked.
"To do the grunt work the others don't want to do."
"In other words, a slave camp?" Carol asked.
"If you want to call it that."
"They make the kids work, too?" Caroline asked.
"If they're old enough. The little ones are kept in a nursery of sorts."
"Are they fed?" Carol asked.
"Of course, they're fed," he said with a disgusted look.
"What about Dog? What did they do with him?" Daryl asked.
"He might be used as….," he said then stopped when Caroline placed the blade of her knife against his throat. "Mind putting that away?"
"You better say he is gonna be used as a guard dog," Caroline said with a growl.
"Caroline, stand down," Daryl said and she placed the knife back in the holder on her belt.
"I was…," Lance said as he cleared his throat. "I was going to say he would be used as a guard dog. Don't have that many."
"Where would they take him?" Carol asked.
"Either to the Estates or one of the outposts."
"How do you get to the outposts?" Daryl asked.
"Depends where it is. Mostly by jeep, bus or truck. Sometimes by train."
"Wait! You have a train!?" Carol asked with wide eyes.
"Yes, we have a train. We don't use it that often. Mostly for supply runs or taking troops from one place to another."
"Where do you get fuel for it?" Caroline asked.
"We found some train depots with usable fuel."
"Which means there are a few depots nearby," Carol said.
"If I knew which way we were traveling, I could tell you where one was."
"We're goin' east," Daryl said.
"There might be a train depot coming up on the right."
The jeep headed down the road when Daryl saw some lights between the trees and he stopped the jeep.
"Stay here," Daryl warned Hornsby then Daryl looked at his sister. They head a silent conversation as Caroline nodded and she watched Daryl and Carol getting out of the jeep. They carefully headed for the trees then vanished and Caroline looked at Hornsby.
"Do you think he's lying?" Carol asked while they walked down the path.
"He knows he'd have to deal with Caroline if he is," Daryl said, moving a branch back.
They cautiously headed toward the train depot when they ducked down and Daryl removed the binoculars from his belt. He used the binoculars to scan the depot and he saw several soldiers standing guard.
"Damn," he whispered and handed the binoculars to Carol. She used the binoculars to scan the depot then she lowered the binoculars, sighing.
"Guess we better trying the next depot," Carol whispered.
"Or we come back and see if any of the others are here."
Nodding, Carol followed Daryl as they headed down the trail and she handed him the binoculars. She could just see the anger on his face as he sighed and she slid her right hand around his left hand. He wrapped their fingers together as they kept walking and she leaned her head against his shoulder.
Caroline watched the darkness while Hornsby slept and she tried to see any sign of Daryl and Carol. She flexed her fingers when she saw the soft green glow in the sky and the sounds of flutes, drums and chanting filled the air.
"Hey, Little Squirrel," made her look to the right and she could just see red eyes in the darkness.
"Hey," Caroline grumbled.
"Guess you're angry at me, too, fer not stoppin' any of this."
"Yeah."
"Like I told yer brother, I am not all powerful. If I was, I'd still have my people."
"You couldn't stop them from dyin'?"
"Nope.
"That's why you hate people?"
"It's one of the reasons."
"Do you know where the others are?"
"Yeah. And they're safe."
Hornsby snorted awake when the green light and the sounds of flutes, drums and chanting faded and he looked at Caroline.
"Who were you talking to?" he asked, but Caroline stayed quiet. A few seconds later, Daryl and Carol returned as they got back in the jeep and Hornsby sighed, closing his eyes and he went back to sleep.
"Did he behave himself?" Carol asked and Caroline nodded.
"We found the train depot. Gonna go back in the mornin' to see if any of our friends are there," Daryl said. They settled down as they closed their eyes and Daryl smiled after Carol took hold of his right hand and they wrapped their fingers together.
