The wind turned cold and slightly misty as Jhonny checked the map in the direction that White Island should be. However, the map only showed an approximate location.
"The island's magic makes it invisible to the eye" he recalled from the guardians' teachings.
"The last time I came here, it was easy to find…" thought Jhonny, "Where can it be?"
The place was covered in clouds and the sea waters became brighter as if she were close, but he still couldn't see it. Exhausted from flying so far, he sat down on a small islet to take a rest. He hadn't rested long when he felt something strange move under him.
"This…" he yelled when he realized, "It's not an islet!"
Something huge was rising out of the water; it was a huge shell, followed by the same owner: a giant sea turtle. For a moment, he wanted to fly to escape from that creature, but the exhaustion of a long flight only allowed him to stay one meter from the ground or sea. When he thought of attacking, he heard the sound of an echo, just like a whale should sound. That sound was... calming and peaceful, with no desire for aggression.
"Isn't...aggressive?" thought Johnny, "And that sound…sounds like a whale. If this creature is like one, it probably feeds on Krill or something similar. I just hope I'm right."
He went directly to where the giant turtle head was located, confirming that it was like one. Taking courage, he spoke to it:
"Hello, can you understand me?"
The creature responded with another echoing sound. In short, it was not aggressive, just something big.
"I'm sorry to sit in your shell" Jhonny apologized, "Excuse me, do you know where a white island is?"
The creature responded with the echo again. Sitting up, he could feel the echo reaching his head through his senses. To his surprise, he could hear something:
"I'll take you there..."
Jhonny was stunned: either the animal was really speaking or it was he who understood it. Ok, being a dragon implied talking to them, but... with a giant turtle? Wanting to confirm what he heard, he asked:
"Can you speak through those echoes?"
And, just like before, the echoing sounds translated in his mind:
"... do you understand me? Curious, no dragon has ever listened to me before. The last young dragon I led to the white isle was unconscious…"
"Sorry for the question, but... what species of turtle are you?"
"... I am a Leviathan, creatures that are long before the first dragons ..."
"I understand. Woah, I never would have guessed that."
"…Look, there it is …"
In front of them, where the sea turned a brilliant aquamarine color, was an island covered in white sand, ice, rocks, and floating platforms. Half of the entrance was in twisted, scattered ruins. It was his stop: the White Island.
The Leviathan kindly pulled him to the edge of the beach, which was as white as salt. Turning to the friendly creature, he thanked it.
"Thank you very much, ma'am..." he tried to say, but he didn't know the name.
"... Wiryu. And don't worry, it's not the first time it's happened ... See you soon ..."
Saying that last thing, he plunged into the vast ocean, splashing a large amount of water on the apprentice guardian. Drying like a dog, Jhonny turned his gaze to the entrance, inside which were the bones of dead creatures and misshapen stone sculptures and other humanoids. Drawing strength from a breath, he entered that dark residence, fully alert to the statues, as they could attack at any moment. In the same way, he was treading carefully because, although the sea outside seemed normal, the pools inside the island were bubbling and contained several skeletons, indicating that they might be acidic.
"Spyro was right: this place changes" he said to himself, "I just hope they don't move..."
But unluckily, when he was about to reach a tunnel where a light was visible, the statues revived and approached the young dragon, brandishing their stone weapons.
"Me and my big mouth..." he said to himself. Then he added: "Come on, this time I'm more ready than ever"
The warriors charged and brought all their weapons together to strike, but the young apprentice had quickly leaped at them, dodging all at once. He wasn't the timid dragon who faced one while dreaming: he was there awake, facing 6 of them.
"Dragon Comet!"
Quick as a comet, he planted himself on the back of one of the statues, digging his claws through and through the rock. One had fallen, but he had a few more left. Suddenly, two of the statues attacked with their axes. Managing to manage, the young dragon dodged the double attack, so that both enemies destroyed each other.
"Okay, 3 less, 3 more to go" he thought, "I really hope that's all of them"
The other three rushed at Jhonny together. However, it was burning and breathing. In the end, he breathed out a fire so powerful that it struck the three remaining statues and incinerated them with such heat that they shattered into little pieces.
"That's all..." the young dragon sighed. But then he turned to the light at the end of the tunnel, "At least, for now..."
She took a dry fruit out of his bag and, while he ate to recover some energy, he continued on her way. The light was blinding, but when it dissipated, he was met with the large door to the Celestial Library. It didn't seem like an illusion, but it was quite strange that the door was so unguarded.
Approaching the door, it was flung open. Without lowering his guard, the young dragon entered the Chronicler's study.
"And the apprentice guardian entered the abode of the legendary Chronicler, fuller of confidence and spirit than the last time they met ... How do you like the way the book is narrated?" a voice told him from behind the big hourglass.
Ignitus, the Chronicler, appeared behind that clock. Its gray horns were as stout as ever, and the blue color of its scales matched the room very well. The wings, on the other hand, looked just as damaged as they had been before his death in the ring of fire.
"Well..." answered Jhonny, somewhat embarrassed, "I never thought I was part of a story..."
"Hahaha" Ignitus laughed, showing a floating book, "It's all part of the book that I can write thanks to your progress. Last time we met, you were the rookie; but now, you have progressed quite a bit, even more than I did in my youth"
For a moment, the timid young dragon returned.
"Do you really believe that, Master Ignitus?" He asked, "I don't think I'm better than you."
"Some believe that one born and trained from a young age is the strongest and most worthy," Ignitus replied, looking at another book that flew towards him, "But even if early training gives you power, it can fill you with arrogance, self-centeredness, and conceit, as it happened to Malefor. Tell me, does anyone else sound like that to you?"
Jhonny thought of a moment in the history of mankind.
"It is an example of various leaders in the past of human beings" he replied, "But it is not like that anymore: they live in an era of peace... at least I think, at this moment"
"I never said they are right now. However, lies and greed always make humans make blunders, even believing that it is for a worthy good. There are those who do not mind committing unethical acts as long as they have what they want. All, without exception, border between light and darkness. That includes you, my good friend."
Jhonny was tense, because he remembered the words of Syrus:
"What use is that power you obtained? Are you a creature with a heart of light or of darkness?
"Syrus taught you well and assured you that all dragons also face it" Ignitus told him, "I don't need to test your spirit: I know how determined you are to want to improve yourself and the self-confidence you have gained. And not only you, but the rest of your friends"
"They are well?"
Three other books flew towards them: the first was from Ray, who was victorious but hurt in the face of an unconscious blue wolf the size of the Cerberus he had defeated earlier.
"That's a Raiju, a creature of storms," Ignitus told him, "Compared to the creature you faced, this one just needed to be calmed down. On the other hand..."
The other book, Thorr's, showed Thorr defeating a monstrous, muscular, tiger-like humanoid creature.
"A Rakshasa, a bestial and chaotic creature that takes pleasure in destroying temples, desecrating tombs, and tormenting both the living and the dead. They haven't seen each other for generations, but this one is said to be the last. But I think the one that interests you the most is…"
Edel's book flew towards him, showing the young dragon, freezing a giant snow ape in an ice cube. The next page showed her, with the pieces of the cube next to it.
"A Jigou, a colossal ape of snow and ice" explained Ignitus, "It is bestial and perhaps more out of control than the other two"
"Edel... I always knew you would make it" Jhonny said to himself, feeling relieved to know that he was okay.
"Each one has outdone themselves without a doubt . But before you go, I want to teach you something else: I will teach you something that your soul is quite related to.
"What is it, master?"
Ignitus smiled as he replied:
"You not only have the spirit of a dragon, but also a persevering belief in magic"
"Really?"
"Your communication with the Leviathan is the key. They are beings with great magic, like dragons, with the difference that they live in the ocean. Now, back to your magical value, let me show you this."
Ignitus produced a silver-gray padlock, fully locked. Then, with his magic, he made it float like the books.
"A simple release spell," he said, drawing a key-shaped line in the air with his claw. From its claws, a kind of silver glow came out that left a mark in the air, "Exadios!"
The padlock opened as if an invisible key had. Then, he closed it again and left it floating in front of the young dragon.
"You try" he said, "Concentrate some mana in your claws and draw the symbol. The key is to believe that you can do it. I think you're over that now, aren't you?"
Jhonny nodded and took a breath, telling himself: "I'm ready"
Doing the same, he focused energy into his right claw, and began to draw the same key symbol in the air. The only difference was that this one was gold-red, like the beginning of dawn. Having completed it, he recited:
"Exadios!"
In front of him, the lock opened again, responding to the spell cast.
