(Hours later – Situation Room)
Coulson had taken command of the Hub with Naruto as his second in command as Naruto technically had the higher clearance but didn't know all the protocols, regulations, and rules that came with being a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent, nor did he care, he was there to make sure that nothing happened to Coulson or his team.
Naruto and Coulson watched the screens as clips of the Insight Helicarriers that Captain America, Peggy Carter, Sam Wilson, and Naruto helped take down.
"Today, world leaders are scrambling for answers after the world's most advanced spy agency was crippled by a series of attacks. The president…" A news reporter said before a woman walked up to Naruto and Coulson
"Sir?" the woman said getting Naruto and Coulson's attention
"Find Agent Martin. We need a back channel to the UN. Someone we trust." Coulson ordered before the woman walked away as Skye walked up
"…the documents released from S.H.I.E.L.D. show…" The reporter continued as Naruto and Coulson's attention was once again drawn to the news feed
"I made a list of S.H.I.E.L.D. bases we believe are secure." Skye announced
"How many so far? Seven?" Coulson asked before Naruto chuckled
"It's good to be hopeful Coulson." Naruto commented
"Three." Skye answered causing Coulson to turn to her silently asking if she was serious or joking
"Plus the Hub?" Coulson asked
"No, including the Hub." Skye answered "It's a preliminary list. I'm sure more will turn up." Before Coulson, Skye, and Naruto's attention was once again drawn to the massive screen in front of them as well as the new reporter talking
"Members of Congress are calling for an investigation panel. But it's still unclear who should be held accountable. Many of its leaders have vanished, leaving S.H.I.E.L.D…" The reporter continued
"You were right all along." Skye said causing Naruto and Coulson to turn their attention to her once again "Having all this out there in the world makes it too dangerous, and now there's no one left to protect it."
"There's us." Coulson reassured "We were lucky enough to make it through. The Triskelion, the Hub? Those battles are just the beginning of this war. HYDRA's out there now, but at least our team's still intact. We can fight them. And we will." Before Coulson walked away
(Minutes later)
Coulson had returned to a waiting Skye and Naruto.
"Good news. The Cube has been retaken. All HYDRA agents have been flushed out and are on the run." Skye announced
"So that makes four." Coulson commented
"See? I told you more would turn up." Skye reassured as May walked up
"The hull's almost completely repaired. Flight systems back online." May announced
"And the cargo ramp?" Coulson asked causing May to sigh
"Fitz assures me that it will be operational." May answered before a US Air Force insignia came up on the big screen
"Sir, incoming transmission." A S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent announced getting Naruto, Coulson, May, and Skye's attention before video started coming thru
"This is Colonel Glenn Talbot, US Air Force. I need to speak with whoever's in charge over there." The now named Talbot announced/requested before Naruto stepped up as he was technically in charge being a higher clearance level and rank then Coulson
"Colonel Talbot, I'm Agent Maelstrom. I hold the highest rank and clearance level here but my friend Agent Coulson—" Naruto started before Talbot cut him off
"Mr. Maelstrom. Wait a second, I've seen your face before, you were at the United States Senate Armed Services Committee with Tony Stark defending his rights to the Iron Man armor, you also threatened Senator Stern, I never forget a face, especially one as unique as yours Mr. Uzumaki. It's a real mess your boys have gotten us into." Talbot said causing Naruto to sigh
'Well look like my cover is blown to May, Coulson, and Skye as well as everyone else in this room.' Naruto thought to himself
"While I would have appreciated you not reveal my real identity to everyone in this room I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. Anyways HYRDA caught us by surprise." Naruto responded
"Well, that's an understatement. It's troubling how deeply embedded HYDRA was within your ranks." Talbot said
"Especially troubling for us, sir." Coulson interjected "But I assure you, we're going on the offensive now."
"Anyways, the Hub is secure. All remaining agents stand ready to assist you in whatever—" Naruto continued before Talbot cut him off
"I think we've had about all the assistance we can handle from S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm sending in a peacekeeping force. They're gonna take control." Talbot said
"Understood. What should I tell my men to expect?" Naruto asked
"We just wanna ask a few questions. Get the lay of the land. Everything checks out, you and your boys can be on your merry." Talbot answered before he ended the transmission
"Asshole." Naruto said before he turned to Coulson "So what now?"
"This doesn't sound good." Coulson commented as they all turned around and started walking out
"He's lying definitely, for sure." Skye added "Why did he call you Mr. Uzumaki, Maelstrom?"
"That's a subject for another time." Naruto said canning the discussion before it could start
"If Talbot's leading the op, there's nothing peacekeeping about it." Coulson explained
"Base defenses are operational. We could hold out." May suggested
"The last thing S.H.I.E.L.D. needs is to start a war with the US Government." Coulson stated
"I'd also like to keep my personal life out of scopes of the US Government, well minus my taxes, me being the face of S.H.I.E.L.D. just then has already given them a reason to come knocking on my door when I get back home and demand answers." Naruto added
"What happens when Talbot gets here?" Skye asked
"Best-case scenario, we all get subpoenas, spend the next six months tied up in court hearings." Coulson answered
"Worst-case scenario?" Skye asked
"Is they skip the subpoenas, move straight to bunker busters." Coulson answered as they rounded a corner
"Bombs. Big bombs." Skye commented
"All the while HYDRA's still out there." May commented
"Get on the comms. We're enacting Odyssey Protocol." Coulson ordered
"Odyssey Protocol? What does that mean?" Skye asked
"It means Fitz needs to finish his repairs. We're getting the hell out of here." Coulson answered causing May to sigh
(A couple of hours later)
"A lot of agents are staying behind to surrender." May stated as her, Naruto, and Coulson made their way to the Bus
"Wish they'd reconsider. We'll need all the help we can get to fight HYDRA." Coulson commented "How's the Bus?"
"Fitz managed to jerry-rig the ramp, but the Hub's fuel reserves were tapped out. We're running low." May answered as they walked up the cargo ramp
"Talbot's landing in less than an hour. Can you get us up in the air or not?" Coulson asked
"I'll have us wheels up in 10." May answered as they walked past Triplett
"So, you guys are all set to go?" Triplett asked causing Coulson and Naruto to stop
"I appreciate your help." Coulson responded
"Enough to give me a bunk? Seeing as you guys are down a specialist. I was hoping I could hitch a ride." Triplett asked
"Not gonna happen." Coulson answered "But feel free to commandeer one of Hand's vehicles."
"I'm sorry, is there a problem?" Triplett asked
"No problem. Just not letting you on my plane." Coulson answered
"Garrett had me fooled same as everyone else." Triplett said
"Everyone else wasn't at his side day in, day out." Coulson countered
"Friends of mine are dead because of him. Good friends." Triplett said before Coulson turned to Naruto as Simmons came up
"I think he should come with us, sir." Simmons said getting Coulson's attention before he turned back to Naruto
"What do you say, what vibes does he give you?" Coulson asked before Naruto turned his attention to Triplett for 30 seconds
"I'm not getting anything negative from him so there's that and he's not giving off the same vibes that Ward gave me. I say we let him come along." Naruto answered
"Alright, you are clear to come with us." Coulson said before he continued on his way up the stairs to the second level as Naruto moved to help Fitz and Simmons clear up their lab
(Half an hour later - Lab)
Naruto and Simmons had just gotten done taking inventory when Coulson walked in.
"How we doing on supplies?" Coulson asked
"We're well-stocked up on medical, but I'm afraid our food rations will only last a couple of days at best." Simmons answered
"I can always get us some more from my place." Naruto added causing Simmons to turn to him
"Perfect." Coulson said before he made his way to the cargo ramp as Triplett climbed off a ladder
"Bad news." Triplett announced
"No kidding." Coulson responded
"Fuel line's busted. We're leaking." Triplett stated as he held up what a probe
"Can we fix it?" Coulson asked
"Sure, as soon as we touch down." Triplett answered
"I can keep us off Satellites and radar for as long as we need when we touch down." Naruto announced from the Lab
"Awesome." Coulson responded before he made his way to the second floor with Naruto not far behind him
(Command Center)
"Skye, please, tell me something good." Coulson pleaded as he and Naruto entered the Command Center
"We have Internet." Skye responded
"Yay. And, boy, have I lowered my expectations." Coulson responded
"But all HQ support systems are gone." Skye added
"Well, then, the Internet it is. Find everything you can on our team, minus Maelstrom, all personal records, photos, anything that proves we exist, and erase it." Coulson ordered before he started on his way to the cockpit
"Uh… That's kind of the nuclear option. And why exclude Maelstrom?" Skye said causing Naruto and Coulson to turn around
"It's our only option. Every government agency in the world will be on our ass. We need to vanish." Coulson responded before he turned to Naruto "As for why we should exclude him, I'm pretty sure that Maelstrom is just an alias or a coverup name. Plus he can take care of himself he doesn't need us ruining his personal life."
"You are correct on the fact that Maelstrom is just an alias. As for deleting my stuff, just delete my S.H.I.E.L.D. file and any pictures or records that associate me with you guys as I keep my personal, work, and S.H.I.E.L.D. life separate." Naruto responded
"OK, but once that's done, that can't be undone. We'll be ghosts. Not Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., just agents of nothing." Skye said before Naruto and Coulson turned around started on their way to the cockpit "What about Ward? Have you heard from him?" causing Coulson to turn around "He and Agent Hand should've dropped Garrett off at the Fridge by now."
"Not yet." Coulson answered as he pulled out the phone that Hand gave him "Here, give him a call. Hearing how Garrett settled into his tiny, windowless, permanent home might actually cheer me up. When you're finished, collect everyone's badges. It's no longer something we wanna flash around." Before they continued on their way to the cockpit
(Cockpit)
Naruto and Coulson entered the cockpit to find as usual May in the pilots seat.
"Any sign of Talbot's forces?" Coulson asked
"No, not yet." May answered "But we've only got eight hours of flight time before we have to land."
"No more than four. Fuel line's leaking." Coulson informed/corrected before May turned her head to him
"Wanna tell me where we're going?" May asked
"I don't know." Coulson answered before he turned around, opened the door and walked out with Naruto following after him
(Half an hour later – Command Center)
Skye had collected all the S.H.I.E.L.D. badges and given them to Coulson, when Coulson was in the process of putting them in his safe he noticed glowing numbers on his badge. Coulson then checked the rest of the badges that had been collected and discovered that Naruto's badge had the same glowing number. Coulson had told Skye to collect everyone and have them gather in the Command Center for new orders. Coulson walked in getting everyone attention.
"So, Director Fury's alive?" Simmons asked with a hopeful smile
"What did he say? Does he have a plan?" Fitz asked only for Coulson to shake his head
"He only sent coordinates." Coulson answered
"The coordinates should put us somewhere in the Canadian wilderness." Skye explained as she pulled up Satellite images of the coordinates
"What exactly are we looking for here, sir?" Fitz asked
"It's unclear. Maybe a rally point of some kind." Coulson answered
"Sir, have you and Agent Fury used this form of communication before?" Simmons asked
"Never." Coulson answered
"Then how can you be sure—" Simmons started before Coulson cut her off
"-Cause this is how he operates." Coulson said
"This could be a trap. So far, everything has been a trap. Am I wrong?" Triplett asked as he looked around "HYDRA could've sent you those coordinates." Before Coulson walked up to the Interactive Table and pulled out his badge and handed Naruto his
"Nick Fury gave both me and Maelstrom our badges. When he did, I swore an oath. We all did. Well maybe not Maelstrom but the point still stands. To serve when everything else fails. To be humanity's last line of defense. To be the shield. These coordinates mean something if they are on 2 different badges. Both Agents were brought on directly by Director Fury. I'm certain of it. Fury also gave me this plane. Anyone wants off? Chutes are in the bay. Help yourself." Coulson said
"Actually the Avengers are Earth's last line of defense. But the speech was on point." Naruto corrected "If Fury put those coordinates on both of our badges that has to mean something."
(15 minutes later – Lab)
Naruto and Triplett were helping Fitz and Simmons unpack everything that they had picked up from the Hub.
"Hey, I respect Coulson—" Triplett started before Fitz cut him off
"Agent Coulson to you." Fitz barked before he picked up a box and walked over to the holo table
"He saved our asses back at the Hub. But I'm telling you, he's chasing the white whale." Triplett said
"OK, have you even read Moby Dick?" Fitz asked snarkily
"Yeah. Have you?" Triplett answered
"That's not the point." Fitz said
"Fitz cut this shit out and give him a break." Naruto ordered only for Fitz to pout
"Can we just go back to checking inventory?" Fitz asked as everyone went back to doing inventory
"He may be right, Babe." Simmons said getting Fitz's attention "Coulson could be leading us into a trap and not even know it."
"The whole world's coming apart at the seams. Now's not the time to follow blindly." Triplett added
"No. It's times like these you stick with the guy you believe in." Fitz said before he picked up a box and walked away
(Three and a half hours later – Somewhere in the Canadian Wilderness)
They had made it to Canadian Wilderness a few miles from the provided coordinates with a tiny bit of fuel to spare. May had just landed the Bus in an open clearing covered in Snow. Everyone but Naruto had on their snow gear, which caused Triplett to look at Naruto funny.
"Why doesn't he have on snow gear?" Triplett asked
"Cause I don't need it. I am immune to extreme temperatures." Naruto answered as Coulson came down the stairs from the second level
"Coordinates are about a seven-mile hike from here. The terrain's pretty rough, even if it wasn't covered with snow." Coulson explained as everyone gathered a little ways away from the cargo ramp
"Agent May and I could lead a scouting party first. Make sure this isn't a trap." Triplett suggested
"There's no time. In less than eight hours, a NATO satellite will pass directly over us. If the bus is still here, they'll know. I've been doing this long enough to know that something's up there. But this mission has to be your choice. A lot's changed in the last few days. I know you all have your doubts about what we've been doing, about me. But I don't. Which is why I'm going to find whatever Fury has waiting for us…with you, or without you." Coulson explained before he walked over to the button that controlled the cargo ramp and hit it lowering the cargo ramp, and exposing the Bus to the cold temperatures that awaited them
"I'll take care of the Bus. Make it easier to transport." Naruto said as he unsealed a big scroll shocking everyone but Coulson, Skye, Fitz, and Simmons "I'm going to need everyone out of the Bus for this." And with that, everyone walked out into the freezing wildness that awaited them before Naruto walked to the middle of the Bus and placed the scroll underneath, and began pumping chakra.
A few minutes later the Bus was replaced with a cloud of grey smoke, seconds later Naruto emerged from the smoke with the same scroll that he had unsealed before quickly sealing that scroll away into one of the storage seals that he had on his person.
"There now we don't have to worry about the satellite discovering us." Naruto said to a gobsmacked Fitz, Simmons, Skye, May, Coulson, and Triplett "Now lets get going."
"Are we just going to completely ignore the fact that he just made our plane disappear into something about 500th its size?" Triplett asked "How did you even do that in the first place?"
"As long as it's not damaged I could care less." Coulson answered before he began on the 7-mile hike to the coordinates
"I did it with something called a Storage sealing array." Naruto answered before began following after Coulson with May following shortly after, followed by Skye, Fitz, and Simmons
"Have yall never questioned this man?" Triplett asked as he followed suit
"We have but we are not at liberty to demand answers, let alone try and force him to answer our questions. So far he has revealed some stuff because he trusts me, Fitz, and Skye but that only accounts for about a third of what he truly can do, according to him." Simmons answered
(Hours later)
"This is it!" Coulson announced as they reached a small clearing before everyone slowly fell in behind Coulson "There's gotta be something here. Stay alert. Eyes open. Maelstrom scan the area if you would see if you can find something we can't."
Naruto nodded before he began scanning the area around them with his X-ray Vision, a minute later he laid his eyes on a hidden turret and what looked like a hidden door in the rock
"I got something, looks like a turret and a pathway hidden in the rock. Just over there." Naruto announced before he walked up activating the turret as everyone got behind him
"Identify yourself." A robotic voice came from the turret
"Agent Maelstrom, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.." Naruto responded
"I'm Phil Coulson, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.." Coulson added before a few second later the turret retracted behind the rock that hid it
"Welcome, Agent Coulson, Agent Maelstrom. We've been expecting you." The voice said before they heard some rumbling before part of the rock that Naruto identified retracted revealing what looked like a bunker
"I guess it wants us to go in." Coulson commented before everyone walked into the 'hole' in the rock
"What is this place?" Skye asked
"One of Fury's secret bases." A distant voice answered, instantly everyone was on their toes before a average height man in a suit came barreling around the corner fixing his tie "Ah, I call it Providence, Although, technically, it doesn't have a name, because, technically, it doesn't exist, it being a secret base and all."
'Fury you got a really funny sense of humor…' Naruto thought
"If everyone would follow me…" the man said before he started walking
Everyone followed the man as he opened a set of double doors revealing what looked like a cafeteria before he twirled around.
"Pretty cool, huh?" The man asked with a smile
"I'm sorry. Who are you exactly?" Coulson asked
"Eric Koenig, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., Level Six." The now named Koenig answered
"Phil Coulson." Phil responded before Koenig went in for a handshake
"I know. I know. It is an honor to meet you, Agent Coulson." Koenig said before he turned to Naruto "It's also an honor to meet someone a powerful as yourself Agent Maelstrom, or would you rather I call you by your real name?"
"Well seeing as Skye deleted my S.H.I.E.L.D. file Agent Maelstrom no longer exists and I trust everyone here enough to know my real name. You can call me by my real name as Talbot has already outed my last name in front of Coulson, May, and Skye." Naruto answered before he turned around to everyone else "Well I trust everyone but Agent Grant Ward, he doesn't get to know my real name."
"Naruto it is then." Koenig responded before Naruto turned around
"Who the hell names their kid after a ramen topping?" Triplett asked causing Naruto to give him a dirty look
"It means Maelstrom. I was named after the protagonist in one of my dads favorite books made by my dads sensei." Naruto answered
"Anyways, lets get you issued your very own lanyard, Coulson." Koenig said "Lanyards for others will be distributed on a case-by-case basis for everyone but Naruto he has already been cleared by Director Fury." Before everyone started taking off their snow gear
"What happened to Director Fury? Is he alive?" Coulson asked
"Fury didn't make it out of DC. It's been rough. We're all a little shaken up. Especially now that the Fridge has fallen." Koenig answered shocking Coulson before he turned to Skye who immediately pulled out a phone and walked away "Who is she calling?"
"We had a man at the Fridge." Coulson answered
"Ward, thank god." Skye said with a sigh
"Can I speak to both you and Naruto in private?" Koenig asked only getting a nod from Naruto in return before Koenig walked off with Naruto behind him and Coulson shortly after
(Another room)
"You know, it's nice having company. Don't get me wrong, I mean, this place is great." Koenig commented before Coulson took note of all the 'windows'
"What's with the windows?" Coulson asked
"Oh, that's suppoise to make the isolation more bearable. Every day of the week, a different view. Wednesday's pretty terrific if you like topless beaches." Koenig answered
"So, how long have you been in here?" Coulson asked
"Since the Chitauri invaded New York." Koenig answered
"Oh." Coulson responded
"Oh, it's not so bad. Reading a ton of historical fiction. Gaming online witwh my brother. We're racking up major Call of Duty hours." Koenig reassured "You play?"
"Of course. Lately, not so much." Couslon answered "So, was there something you wanted to tell me?"
"Yes, my bad. Fury is not dead." Koenig answered
"What?" Coulson asked not sure if he was joking
"Yeah. HYDRA thinks they killed him, but he managed to escape from DC." Koenig answered
"So you just lied to my team." Coulson stated for clarification
"Well, I don't know them. And those are Fury's direct orders. Only a select few people can know that he's alive. Maria Hill, Cap, Peggy, a couple of others and now, you, me, and Naruto." Koenig explained
"Where is he now?" Coulson asked
"No one knows. Ever since he went dark, no one's heard from him. This is highest priority Full Eclipse Protocol. No one else can know." Keonig answered
"I'm not comfortable with keeping secrets from my team." Coulson said
"Well, they haven't been vetted. And if you talk, we're gonna have a major problem." Koenig responded
"Are you threatening me?" Coulson asked
"100%. Fury's orders." Koenig answered "Not big on the trust, is he?" before there was a brief moment of silence "So, we good?"
"We're good." Coulson replied
"Great!" Koenig exclaimed as he patted Coulson's arm "I'm gonna get you set up with the lanyard. Maybe ask Agent May to pull the plane in. I've got a parking space for it and everything."
"That won't be necessary I have it right here." Naruto said as he unsealed the big scroll that he had sealed the Bus into causing Koenig to go wide-eyed
"You have that big plane stored in that big scroll that is about a 500th of its size?" Koenig asked only getting a nod in return "Man, Fury was right about you, you are powerful. Let me take you to the hangar to deposit the plane then we can go forward with the lanyards." Before he turned around and walked out with Naruto right behind him
"Let me get the rest of the team, they might want to see this." Naruto said before he made his way back to the cafeteria with Koenig, Naruto walked in getting everyone's attention "Yall want to see me unpack the Bus?" Everyone nodded with Fitz nodding furiously "Follow us to the hangar then." Before he turned around and motioned for Koenig to lead the way
Everyone followed Koenig to the hangar where Naruto walked out into the middle of it and unraveled the big scroll and began pumping chakra into it, everyone watched as a second later the area was consumed by smoke. The smoke cleared to reveal the Bus unharmed and in the same condition that it was sealed in leaving everyone in awe before Naruto walked back to the team raveling the scroll back up along the way.
"You said something about lanyards?" Naruto said to a still-in-awestruck team "Hello?" before everyone shook their heads to get rid of the mental cobwebs produced by what they just witnessed
"Right, lanyards, follow me." Koenig said before he walked away as everyone followed him
