A few days had passed, and Maura was scheduled to go back to work but she had a stop to make on the way.

She hadn't spoken to Jane since her birthday not that she didn't want to but because she figured they both needed some time to sort things out for themselves. It didn't help that Jane had left her cell phone behind in her rush to leave.

Arriving at the Four Seasons hotel Maura shut her car off and took a deep breath before stepping out. She wasn't sure exactly what she would say to Jane but figured she would know when she was standing face to face with her.

Walking in, Maura headed straight for the elevators. Max knew her by name now from her and Jane's outings, so she didn't need to check in.

Max was just finishing with another guest when he noticed Maura walk by.

"Mrs. Isles." He called out, making Maura stop and turn.

"Hello Max. I'm just heading up to see Jane." She said with a friendly smile which faded rather quickly when she noticed his confusion.

"Um, Mrs. Isles…."

"Please Max, I've told you before. Maura is just fine."

"Maura. I thought you would be the first to know."

Now Maura was the one with a look of confusion. "First to know what?"

"It's really not my place to say but seeing as you don't know. I suppose I should tell you."

Now Maura's confusion gave way to worry. "Max! Out with it already!" She said loudly making herself jump when her voice bounced back to her in the near empty lobby.

"I'm sorry, just, will you please tell me what's going on? Did something happen to Jane?"

"No, no, nothing like that. Jane isn't here Maura. She left." Max finally said with saddened eyes when Maura's shoulders slumped.

"She left? When?"

"Night before last? Seeing how upset she was, I didn't think it was right to ask any questions."

Max didn't get the chance to say anything further as Maura quickly exited the building.

Back in her car Maura fell apart. Resting her head against the steering wheel she let her tears fall.

She beat her hand against the steering wheel angry with herself for not telling Jane how she actually felt and angry at Jane for leaving without so much as a goodbye.

If she was really being honest with herself, she was hurting but did she really have the right?

Shaking her head, Maura pulled herself together and headed for work.

Walking into the clinic Janice noticed Maura immediately.

"Hey girl! Good morning, I haven't heard from you since dropping your gifts off. I assumed you were out with your detective since I had to let myself in. Must have been a fun few days." She said with a huge grin.

When Maura kept her pace without a word Janice followed her into her office.

"Maura, what's wrong?" She said, shutting the door behind them. The clinic wasn't open yet but that didn't mean there weren't others around.

Maura dropped her bag on the desk and picked up a file. "Mrs. Green is our first client this morning. I want a full blood work up done on her and…."

"Maura," Janice tried again. She didn't need Maura to look at her to know something was wrong. "What's going on?"

Maura sighed, dropping the file on the desk she turned and looked at her friend. "Jane left."

"Oh sweetie," Janice said as she went to hug her friend. Taking notice of her bloodshot eyes. "It'll be okay. You two can still talk and maybe you can fly out to see her."

Maura couldn't help as her tears began to fall once again. "No Janice, I ruined everything. She left because of me."

Janice sat down on the edge of the desk and held her friend's hands. "I'm sure that's not true Maura."

"No it is. She told me she loved me Janice. And I didn't say it back. I didn't say anything. God! How could I be so stupid! We shared an amazing night together and then I ruined it like always."

"Do you know her number or where she might have gone?"

Maura shook her head, " She said she needed to clear her mind. I figure she has gone back to Boston."

Janice wasn't sure what to say so she just hugged Maura until her tears stopped.

"Maybe this is for the best. You know," Maura finally said, not sure if she was trying to convince Janice or herself. "I'm not good with relationships and surely a long distance one wouldn't have worked."

"Maybe someday you two can get back in touch. Maybe the timing just wasn't right for the two of you. You can always look her up or call her even."

"I can't."

"Well maybe not right now but…."

"No Janice. I mean I can't. I have her cell. She left it at my house when she left the other night."

"Oh."

"Well, that's an easy fix, I mean how many Jane Rizzoli's could there be in Boston."

Maura smiled softly. "Thank you for attempting to make me feel better Jan, but I think it's best if I just let her go."

Janice heard the words, but she didn't believe them. She was witness to what Jane and Maura had but it wasn't her place to push.

"Hey, why don't you take the day. Go home, go shopping, go do whatever you need to do to get past this. We don't have a lot of patients scheduled today so we can handle things here. Besides, you're not going to be much good if you're blubbering all over the patients."

Maura chuckled and wiped her tears. "Are you sure?"

"I'm certain, take some time for yourself and then come back."

"Thank you, Janice." Maura said as she hugged her friend.
