EPOV
"Hi..." I said to Mom I left the office early the next day and went to my parents' house.
I had been preparing myself to keep calm, but I wasn't sure if it was really going to work!
"Hey..." she smiled, "What a surprise!"
"Yeah, I just wanted to talk to you," I said.
"Sure." she said, "About what?"
"Bella and I are getting a divorce," I said.
"Oh!" she said, "Oh! What happened?" she said.
"No idea," I said, "Bella wants the divorce."
"Oh!" she said, "Why?"
Wow! I didn't know my mother was such a good actress!
"I don't know... I guess she understands that this marriage was just a compromise, and there isn't really a need to continue with that." I said.
"Yeah, I think it makes sense." She said.
"Yeah," I said, "I guess it makes sense, but... I was thinking about giving it a chance before she told me about this. I mean, I started liking her."
She became alert as she heard that.
"Edward... Everything happens for a reason, okay?" she said as she put her hand on my shoulder, "But you can't force her, right? We will make sure she gets money she deserves. We're going to take care of her."
"That's so nice of you," I said.
"Of course," she said, "She's like a daughter to me. I feel really bad for what I did to her. But I wasn't really in the right state of mind. And... You're going to be fine. I'm sure there're better things planned out for you."
"Oh is it?" I said.
"Yes." she smiled.
"Okay, please tell me all the plans already. I can't wait to hear them." I said.
She looked at in confusion.
"What do you mean?" she said.
"Well, you said there're better things planned out for me. So please tell me about those things. You're the one who plans everything anyway, right?" I snapped, looking straight in her eyes.
"What... What are you talking about?" she said.
"Tell me, why did you ask her to give me the divorce?" I asked.
"I... I..."
"Yes, you did. Now tell me why?" I said.
"Edward... What are you even... I don't know what you're talking about," she said.
"I said, why did you talk to Bella about that? Why did you tell her that I was suffering in this marriage? Why did you tell her that she needed to free me?" I said.
She kept staring at me for a few seconds, and then she snapped, "Because I am your mother."
"Oh I see. So mothers go to their daughter-in-laws and they ask them to divorce their son. Oh I see! I wasn't aware of such a thing." I said.
"There is no need to be sarcastic." she snapped.
"Then tell me the actual reason why you did that." I said calmly.
"Don't you see what she did here? She's trying to create differences between us." she said.
"Oh, did she? My God!" I said, "How horrible she is! Alright? Are you satisfied? Now tell me the reason, why did you do that?"
"Edward... You..." she said, "I thought you changed, but no! You're still the same!"
"Yes. I'm done being all nice to you, and ignoring all your bullshit. Now I'm not going to let you go easily... Just like the good old days." I said, "So tell me."
"She's not good enough for you," she said, "You're wasting your life with her. I'm your mother. I can't see you like this."
"Oh I see. Sorry, I've a small question before we proceed," I said, "So had you stopped being my mother when you came up with the scheme to get us married? You didn't think about me at that time? It's a genuine question, you know?"
"Edward... I said, just stop being sarcastic!" she shouted.
"What? I'm just curious. I thought mothers are always supposed to be worrying about their children and all, blah, blah... So I wonder what happened there?" I said calmly, which made her even angrier.
"Because I had lost my mind. I was worried about Emmett's baby, and..."
"Oh right!" I said, "Being a mother is like the greatest thing in the world, so being a grandmother must be even greater than that or something... I see. It totally makes sense!" I said.
"Do you... Do you even know what I was going through at that time?" she said.
"Nope." I said, "But do you know what I was going through at that time? Did you even care to know what Bella was going through at that time?"
"Yes, I know what she was going through. She had lost her husband, and she had no idea about what to do with her baby. I thought about everyone. I tried to come up with the best possible solution."
"Oh!" I said, "How great you're! Salute."
"Edward, just shut up!" She shouted.
"Why should I? I'm just in awe about how great you're... We never discussed your master plan of getting us married in detail. How was that supposed to be best for everyone? Let's discuss that in detail today. I'm all ears. Go ahead and tell me."
"I don't want to discuss anything," she shouted again, "I'm your mother. I'm concerned about you, and it's not a wrong thing to do, but you don't understand that. You don't understand anything!" she said.
"Well, that's what I'm asking," I said, "Just explain it to me."
"Edward, you know how much stress I've been under! Do you know how many medicines I'm taking everyday? You're making everything worse. You should grow up, and start worrying about your aging parents. And look at you! You're acting like a child!"
Sure, she'd resort to something like this.
"Well, you're the one creating a mess here." I said, "Don't you understand? Why are you interfering? Just stop interfering and start minding your own business, and there would be no stress!" I didn't want to sound rude, but I couldn't help myself! This was like old times, when we would have arguments over her snobbish attitude!
"I'm not interfering. I'm just concerned about my son's life. Am I wrong if I do that?" she asked.
"Yes." I said.
"What do you mean, yes?" she said incredulously, "You don't understand anything."
"Mom..." I said calmly, "That's what I'm asking for. Just explain it to me."
"Sometimes I just think I lost the wrong son!" She snapped.
Sure.
I had heard something similar before.
Whenever she felt like she was losing the argument, she'd come up with some bullshit like this!
"Yeah, I wish Emmett was still with us, too," I replied.
"Your Dad worked hard to create this business empire." she said.
"I know. And how does this matter here?" I said.
"I supported him all along the way." She said, "I helped him whenever I could. I helped achieve the position he has in society today."
"Okay, and so?" I said.
"And look at her! She's not even a graduate. Have you looked at her clothes, her hair..." She wasn't able to hide the disgust on her face now, "The way she talks, the way she eats... It's just... yuck!"
My blood boiled as I heard that.
"Can you stop right there?" I gritted my teeth, "Don't you dare talk about my wife like this."
"She's not even your real wife, for God's sake! Have you forgotten why you married her?" she snapped, "It was my mistake, and I'm regretting it now!"
"Oh, are you regretting it after killing your grandchild?" I snapped.
"Shut up!" She shouted.
"That's the fact." I snapped, "You killed Emmett's child. You did that. You, and only you are responsible for this."
"Edward, just leave." she snapped.
"I will." I said, "But there should not be any interference in our lives from you from this point. Do you get that?"
"I wish you had died instead of Emmett." she said as the tears started rolling down her cheeks now, but I wasn't going to let those fool me.
"Oh well, you can't do anything about it. I'm sorry, but you need to deal with me." I snapped.
