It was summer on Sodor. Toby was taking visitors up to Great Waterton with Henrietta. When he arrived at the station, Flora puffed in. Flora was the only other steam tram engine on the island. She ran the Great Waterton Tramway, and she was always happy to see Toby.
Flora jingled her little bell cheerfully. "Hullo, Toby. How is everything on the rest of the island?"
"Oh, busier than ever," said Toby. "Surely I'll have lots of jobs to do all over the island."
Flora sighed. "You're lucky, Toby. I take passengers on the tramline all the time. I sometimes help Stanley shunt in the yard, but that's it. I don't see as much of Sodor as I did on my first day."
Toby felt sorry for his friend, but then, he had an idea. "I know, Flora. Why don't you do my jobs today while I run the tramline for you? Then, you can see rest of the railway."
Flora thought that was a great idea. Their Drivers agreed and swapped engines.
Flora was exited. "What was your next job, Toby?"
"I had to take some trucks to Kirk Ronan." So, Flora set off for the yard with Henrietta.
Then, the Tramway Manager arrived. "Toby, where is Flora?"
"I'll be doing her work today, Sir. She said she wanted to see the island, so she took my next train."
"Very well, Toby," said the Manager. "I just wanted to say that we have lots of visitors today, so be ready."
"I am, Sir."
Meanwhile, Flora had found Toby's trucks. She was coupled up and puffing perkily, she left as quickly as she could.
Later, Flora was pulling Henrietta and the trucks along the main line, when there was a loud rumbling noise. "EXPRESS COMING THROUGH!" Gordon whooshed by with the Express with a clatter and a roar.
Flora was quite shaken up. "Whoa! Oh my!"
Soon, Toby was taking passengers along the mountain track with Flora's tramcar. The sun shone and the trees rustled in the wind. Toby loved it and so did the visitors.
When Flora arrived at Kirk Ronan, the Stationmaster was waiting. "You can leave those trucks here. There are some passengers that must get to Maron." Flora went to fill up her water tanks and quickly made her way to the platform.
At Great Waterton, Toby had come back to the station. He was happy to see all the visitors, but he was starting to miss Henrietta. Then, the Yardmaster appeared. "There are some empty trucks that must get back to Knapford Yard."
"But what about the visitors?" asked Toby.
"You are the only engine here," said the Yardmaster.
"Don't worry, Toby," the Manager added. "I'll let the passengers know you've gone."
When Flora reached Maron Station, a workman was waiting. "Rosie's been delayed, and they are waiting for these trucks at Knapford. Can you take them, please?"
Flora wasn't sure. "I'll try my hardest." Flora was coupled up and puffed out of the station, but the trucks were heavy.
Soon, Flora reached Gordon's Hill. She was worried. She knew she wasn't as strong as Toby. "I must try. I mustn't let Toby down."
Flora started up the hill. "Hold back! Hold back!" giggled the trucks.
Flora puffed and pulled her hardest, but it was no use, and she quickly came to a stop. "Oh no."
Flora backed down the hill and the Guard went to warn the other engines. Just then, Toby arrived. "Flora? What happened?"
Flora wheezed. "Oh Toby, I'm sorry. I was asked to make this delivery to Knapford, but the trucks are too heavy for me."
Toby smiled. "Don't worry. I'll help you over the hill and then, we can deliver our trucks together." And that's just what they did.
It was hard work getting Flora's trucks over the hill, but they were soon coasting smoothly down the other side. Toby went back for his empty trucks and together, they delivered them all safely to Knapford Yard.
"Well done, you too," said Stafford. "You're just in time. Now, if you don't mind, there's another load to go to Great Waterton."
Flora was never happier to hear those words. "I'd be happy to take them."
Toby smiled. "We would be happy to take them…together."
That night, Toby stayed at Great Waterton Sheds with Flora and Stanley. "What do you think of my tramline, Toby?" Flora asked.
"It's lovely and a very beautiful place to visit, but after a while, I was starting to miss my usual jobs, just a little. How did you like seeing the rest of Sodor again?"
"It was fun, but it was a little too busy for me. I wouldn't mind working somewhere else again someday if I had to, but it feels so good to be home."
Toby heartily agreed with Flora. It had been a very busy day and they were happy to be such good friends and with that, they went happily to sleep.
