Roger said, clutching his right eye. Jack was seeing stars from the flash, and as his eyes cleared and he turned to his left, his brain couldn't make out what had just happened. The sun was setting in the west, but just to its left, the sun was rising at double time as well. Jack squinted, trying his hardest to comprehend this violation of the laws of nature. Roger figured it out quicker./span/p

Jack, thank God you're alive! We need to go, now!" Sam yelled, shaking him. Roger took his hand off Jack's wrist, satisfied that his son was, indeed, still alive. Jack opened his eyes to see that a huge chunk of still-glowing metal, probably a vehicle at some point, had impacted only twenty or so feet from him with the force of an artillery round. It came down on top of a tree, splitting it in two. Both halves were crackling and blazing, the fire leaping from fir to fir. Right before his eyes, more globs of slag fell in the distance, followed by blossoming flames. The fire was spreading at unprecedented speed, and there was no telling how much more debris was going to rain down./span/p
p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"Jack scrambled to his feet and the three ran for their lives down the dirt trail leading back to the silo. The trail seemed to curl in on itself, once, twice, three times. Jack was terrified that they were accidentally going in circles, but then it straightened out, the panicked illusion suddenly dispelled. However, he hadn't the time to thank his lucky stars before Roger shoulder-checked him to one side, knocking him to the ground. A wooden fence post, charred and smoldering, shot through where he was a fraction of a second prior and embedded itself in the ground like an arrow. Roger and Sam pulled him up and they kept up their mad dash. Finally, the little shed appeared in their vision, and they put on one final burst of blistering speed, Roger throwing the door open and ushering Sam and Jack inside before slamming it behind him./span/p
p dir="ltr" style="line-height: 1.38; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;"span style="font-size: 11pt; font-family: Arial; color: #000000; background-color: transparent; font-weight: 400; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"The shed was little respite from the debris, but at least it was fireproof. Quickly, the three descended the staircase to the living quarters, Roger shutting a heavy metal hatch over the entryway and bolting it with three industrial-strength rods. Nothing short of a demolition charge would open the silo if its denizens wished it closed. Now, there was only the drumming of falling ejecta striking the shed and the wheezing of the air purifiers filtering the smoke out./span/p

Ellis was rocking back and forth on the couch in fear. "It's happened, it's finally happened…" he repeated like a mantra. Reverend Dean sat quietly in a corner, weeping as he struggled to recite the Lord's Prayer. A voice emanating from the TV implored listeners to seek shelter and remain calm over and over again. Out of immediate danger, the gravity of the situation hit Sam and Jack./span/p

What about your family, Jack? What are we going to do?" Sam said, beginning to hyperventilate. Jack tried to think of something to say to soothe her, but he couldn't; he felt the exact same way. Jack received a little wrapped box bearing a tag stating that it was from his father. He unwrapped it and opened it up to find a KABAR combat knife, the polished steel glinting in the harsh white lighting./span/p
