The Mating: the invisible Fiend

I wasn't sure what woke me up. All I knew was that someone in my pack was in danger. A growl rose in my chest and bubble out from my clenched teeth.

My head snapped to the side, but Simon was safe, and snoring. Completely and totally tangled in his brown sheets.

My growl rose again, louder this time. If Simon was fine, it must be Chloe who was in trouble. That was unacceptable. Chloe was so pure, so innocent, why would anyone want to hurt her? It didn't make sense.

But it happened anyway, so I had to protect her.

I got out of bed as fast as I could.

And then I stood quietly, and listened, really listened. I didn't do that very often. My eyes and ears and nose were so much more potent then a humans and using them could be painful and dangerous.

For instance, I had to be very careful of how quickly I extended my sight or I might see Tori naked. Like I said, painful and emotionally challenged.

Or if I listened to closely, a truck could honk 4 miles away and blow out a eardrum.

I heard little tiny creatures scrabbing around in the shadows of ancient trees and dried moss and little dead things that had deterioted away.

I didn't like dead things, Chloe was too good at reanimating them. Which may sound cool, but it really sucked seeing your mate hurt by an almost fully decomposed thing.

I heard a creak from above me caought my attention. I sighed in exhasperation. Only Chloe would do something as stupid as going to the roof. Didn't she realize that the roof was made of dead wood?

Something tapped lightly on the on the door as I made my way up the stairs to the roof. Nobody eles would hear it, but I did. I heard everything, and from the sound of it, Chloe was frightened. And that made me angry.

I heard her mutter something, but I didn't focus on the words. Hearing her speak made her relatively safe, relatively.

She spoke some more, then banged on the door.

I moved faster. It sounded like she was grappling with yet another ghost. Wonderful, I couldn't fight ghosts for her.

I reached the door, I tried to open it, but it was dead-bolted. This was do not my day. It took a few shoves, but I got it open somehow, Chloe didn't hear me.

I broke down the door, she didn't hear that either. When I saw her face, I realized why. Her cute little eyebrows were furrowed in concentration, and litter flew all around her. She was beautiful, but I was concerned something would urt her, like the rotten floorboards.

Suddenly all was still. Whatever dead thing had been hurting her was gone. But her eyes still remained closed.

"Chloe!" I thudded my feet to make niose. Her eyes flew open, but she didtn see me. But an almost inaudible creak from the floor brought my attention back to the problem at hand.

"Don't move." Her blue eyes pinned mine in a haze of sky and sea. But the floor was about to give out. And send her to her death.
