"Reid, we need to talk," Morgan said the moment the Team had broken up to review more of the case and talk to the family members. JJ had notified them earlier and now they had all been brought in for questioning.
"About what?" she asked, looking away from the board where she had all the locations of the women's deaths marked on a map.
"You know something about this case that you're not telling us," he said.
"Why would I not tell you if I knew something about this case?" Reid demanded. She felt guilty, knowing that Morgan was right and that those women had died because of her. Joker wanted her, not any of them. Harley knew there was a good chance that Joker was lying about loving her, that what he really wanted was revenge on her for leaving and betraying him, but on the off chance that he was genuine about what he was saying…
No! You're not going back to him, Harl, she told herself, you're not going back to that mad clown who murders people and beats you and is the reason you went nuts! You're sane now; going back to him will unravel everything you've done to stay sane, to be a better person.
"I don't know," Morgan said, "why aren't you telling me?"
"Maybe because I don't know anything more than you do," Harley said. "Look, Morgan, I lied earlier. I am afraid, but not for the reasons you think."
"Talk to me, kid," he said.
"Don't call me, kid," she said. "Or Pretty Girl, or any other name you think up!"
"Reid-"
"Don't you 'Reid' me," she said, getting up in his face. Morgan was taller than her by a few inches, just like Joker had been, yet she was tall enough that she could easily catch his eyes, size him up.
"Is there a problem here?" the sound of Rossi's sassy voice sounded behind them.
Morgan and Reid turned in the direction of Rossi and Hotch, who were watching their argument.
"Nope," Harley shook her head. "Uh-uh, Morgan's just interrupted my work."
"And Reid's just lying to me," Morgan said.
"I am not!"
"Both of you, enough," Hotch said. "What's going on?"
"Morgan thinks I know something about the case that all of you don't; he's wrong," Harley said.
"You're defensive," Rossi commented.
"So?"
"So, that's a good indicator that maybe you are lying to him," he elaborated.
"You said you were scared, Harley," Morgan said, "but not because you look like the victims."
"Yes, I did say that," she replied.
"Reid, are you the Unsubs main target?" Morgan asked.
Rossi, Hotch, and Morgan's eyes were trained on her, each one of them obviously breaking the rule not to profile each other as they read her.
"Absolutely not!" she yelled just as Prentiss, Garcia, and JJ walked in the room. "I need air. Can head out for a few minutes?" she looked at Hotch.
He nodded. "You have ten. The moment you come back, we are going to talk about this, okay?"
Reid nodded. She'd have to think of something to say to them, something to deter them… but if she did that, they'd never catch the Joker and more innocent women would die because of her.
Harley walked past JJ, Garcia, and Prentiss, ignoring the concerned faces of all her friends, her family, as she left the room.
"You saw that," Morgan said the moment Reid was gone. "She's the target of this Unsub. We can't let her go out on her own like that; what if he finds her?"
"Morgan, we don't know for sure that Reid is his target," Hotch said.
"Wait a second, fill us in," JJ said, "Reid is the Unsub's target?"
"We think she might be," Hotch informed her. "Reid has been acting differently ever since we got this case, even a little before then. Morgan thought that perhaps she knew something about the case we didn't."
"I just confronted her," Morgan said, "Earlier I'd noticed she was acting off and asked her if she was frightened because she matches the descriptions of the women that have been taken. She said no, but I just got her to confess that she is scared, but not because she looks like them."
"So, you think she's the Unsub's target," Prentiss nodded. "She wouldn't be frightened of being taken by him because she could represent one of his surrogates, but because she's the one he's actually after. It makes sense."
"Reid's ten minutes are up," Rossi glanced at his watch.
"I'll go find her," Morgan said, heading toward the exit of the Bureau.
"Garcia," Hotch said, "I want you to look into Reid's background. Find everything you can on her."
"Okay, sir, but I feel icky running a background check on someone who I view like the adorable little sister I never had," Garcia confessed.
"Well, if running a background check is the only way to save said adorable little sister from a raving psychopath, it's worth it," Rossi said.
Harley had stalked across the street from the Bureau and into the closest alleyway she could find, just trying to breathe. She found herself wanting Diulad, desperate for the blissful calmness the drug Tobias had injected her with repeatedly gave her. Instead, she clutched her temples and drew in deep breaths.
She had to tell them, she knew that. It was the only way she could keep him from killing anyone else. But it would make them look at her differently. She would no longer be the awkward little genius they worried about. She'd be the psychotic lover of a mass murderer. She would no longer be Morgan's best friend, nor would she be like a sister to JJ, Prentiss, and Garcia. Hotch and Rossi would no longer feel any form of affection for her; she'd just be another killer, even if the Joker had done most of the killing and Harley's only real weapon was a damn mallet.
Drawing in one more deep breath, she turned to head back to the BAU. Her ten minutes as almost up.
"Leaving so soon, Harl?"
Harley spun around, her eyes landing on the shadowy figure of the Joker as he stepped into the light.
"P-Pudding?"
"Hello, Harley, did you get my messages?" he asked.
She nodded. "Yeah, yeah, I did. You could have just called, you know. You didn't have to stick a note in a dead girl's heart."
"Oh, but I wanted to be romantic," Joker told her, coming close. He caught a strand of her hair in his hand, twirling it around his pasty white fingers. He grinned down at her, his face scarred into an ever present smile.
Harley knew how he got those scars. He took a knife to his own face.
"Romantic? You're not the romantic type, Mistah J," she said breathily, wanting to take a step back.
"A lot's changed since we've been apart, Harley," he said. "Including your psychical state. I see the bruises healed."
"Bruises do that, Joker," she said, finally taking that step back.
"Oh, Harley, don't leave me again," he said, sounding hurt, "I love you."
"Yeah, and you tend to try to kill me when you love me!" she snapped.
"Don't do this, Harley," he said. "We both know you're going to return to me."
'Oh, am I?"
"Yes," Joker said, "you're going to follow me into a van I have parked on the street or I am going to unleash my laughing gas on this block. You and I will be fine; we are both immune, but everyone else on this block will laugh themselves to death. Oh look!" he pointed at a young boy holding the hand of his mother as they walked, "there's a child! You love children, don't you, Harley. You always wanted them. Well, you can have that, Harley." He began kissing her neck. "You can have anything you want if you just come with me."
"And you'll leave everyone alone?" she asked, unable to take her eyes off the little boy.
He smiled against her neck before saying, "Of course."
"Okay," she said.
"You always were such a smart girl, Harley Quinn," he laughed, guiding her away to the van.
Harley climbed inside just as Morgan got outside the building, just in time to see her.
"Reid!" he yelled, running across the street.
Joker's foot slammed against the gas pedal, speeding away as Morgan tried to chase them.
"Harley!" he yelled.
Joker cackled. "Oh, Harley, don't tell me you've been cheating on me?"
"No," she said, "there's no one." She glanced back, watching Morgan fade in the distance with a pain in her heart. For the first time in a long time, she wondered if she was lying when she said that.
AN: I am so sorry it's been so long since I updated this story. I temporarily lost inspiration for it, but that inspiration has been rekindled by a huge Criminal Minds kick I've recently had. I'm even thinking of writing a story where Reid is the Riddler, as Matthew Gray Gublar voiced him in Assault on Arkham and they are both super smart. (It also helps that I am majorly into Gotham and the Riddler is my favorite character :)). Anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed this chapter. It's been a while since I've been writing for Criminal Minds and even though I was watching it a lot these past few days, I'm not sure if the characters are too OOC or not. Reid definitely is a little OOC because I'm having to blend the personalities of Reid and Harley. It's a tricky thing to pull off and I just hope everyone is satisfied with this chapter. Also, I'm sorry if it bothers anyone that I have switched from first person to third person. I have been writing a lot in third person lately and have found that I prefer it to first person. Now it's been quite a while since I've written anything in first person and doing so has become a bit of a challenge if I'm going to be honest.
I promise to those still reading that I won't ever keep you waiting that long for a chapter again.
