Imagine this. Foxface didn't eat the berries laid out by peeta. She made it to the final 4. Cato died, and She became the final 3 with Katniss and Peeta. Peeta too weak to fight, Katniss unwilling, and Foxface too weak, what would happen to the games?
A/N: There's like one swear word in this chapter so sorry if you don't like that but I feel like it was called for. Also my friend has my copy of Catching Fire so I don't have a reference on what actually happens so I'm just going by memory.
The victory tour only finished a few days ago, and Gideon and Emily are already dragging me out of bed. I'm trying to repair my sleep schedule. But they insist its 'urgent' so I'm up and ready by 10am (it could of at least been at a reasonable time like 3pm) and they begin walking me through a system of paths I didn't even know existed. In my defence, I have only lived here for 6 months. Its a quick walk of about 15 minuites and they eventually stop when we get to a forest area of District 5. They lead me slightly more into a forest and into a small 5x5 wooden shack with 4 chairs inside. Emily sits down and says "We had Beetee send us some stuff that means this room and the surrounding area can't be bugged by the Capitol, so we can talk to you properly."
Fearing the worst I sit down expectantly. Gideon sits down opposite me and exchanges a look with Emily, who nods.
"We have things to tell you", he begins. "Firstly, I'm pretty sure you saw something in District 12. And I think it probably has something to do with District 8".
I go to interrupt him to ask how he knows but he shakes his head and carries on.
"We know about that because... Well me and Emily are part of this alliance almost, which wants to take down the Capitol. Us, along with district 3, 4, 7, 11 and 12 are attempting to take down the Capitol by joining the forces of the Victors. They think that you three- Katniss, Peeta and Finch, The boy with the bread, the girl on fire and the girl who defied the odds- can take it down. Katniss and Peeta don't know about this. But we're all working with District 13".
My mouth drops open at the mention of District 13. I look at him and Emily takes over.
"The Capitol replays the footage every time they show District 13. They're mostly living underground, but they're thriving and they've been working for years to take down the Capitol. Remember the Head Gamemaker, Plutarch Heavensbee? He's the one orchestrating it all, that's why he worked so hard to get to head gamemaker. And its a quell this year, so things are bound to happen".
She gives me a moment to digest this before continuing.
"We need you to join up. If you can help support the rebels, we all know it'll be a huge deal. We need as many recent victors as possible".
I sit in silence for a second before screaming "Absolutely"!
Gideon and Emily laugh to themselves but nod gently. "Of course we knew you'd say yes", Gideon Informs me.
Sadly, Emily brings down the good mood. She reminds us that the reading of the Quarter Quell card is today and we all have to go and watch it on a stage in front of the justice building. This is the worst thing I can imagine but I know it has to be done. We all walk back to our houses in the Victors Village so we can be collected by Peacekeepers.
The Square is almost full when we arrive. We are seated on a stage facing a giant screen that is currently showing the Panem seal, but it quickly disappears to show President Snow's snakey little face. I can't wait for the day the rebels take over, with my help, and we can make a future without the games. He reads the treaty of treason so that we can be reminded of Panems history (even though we all know it anyway). He reminds us that on the 25th anniversary, the district voted for the tributes, and on the 50th it was double the amount of tributes. I just want him to get it over with. I want to know what extra hell my tributes will be facing. A small boy brings a wooden box to Snow and he opens it, selecting a white envelope with '75' branded on it. There are at least 100 of them- so much hell for many years if we don't change it. He opens the envelope and Gideon and Emily take one of my hands each.
"On the seventy-fifth anniversary, as a reminder to the rebels that even the strongest among them cannot overcome the power of the Capitol, the male and female tributes will be reaped from their existing pool of victors."
It takes a second for my brain to process this. In this time, screams and shouts have echoed through the crowd in the Capitol, copied by the ones in District 5. In this time, Gideon is already on his feet screaming "What the fuck?" at the screen. In this time, Emily has dissolved into tears. In this time, I have done nothing but stare at the screen and attempt to process the information. Two of us will be going back in the arena. Another second passes, and I am on my feet, shouting alongside Gideon and the rest of my District. I have less reason to panic than him. District 5 has one male victor, so he will definetly be back in the arena. We have two females, so my chance is lower, but we all know it will be me. I won't be surprised if both of the slips say 'Finch' in careful, neat handwriting. There is no way Snow won't make me go back in the arena. Katniss! I wonder how she's handling this. She's the only female Victor. If Haymitch gets picked, Peeta will definetly volounteer to go with Katniss. It'll be me or Emily, Gideon, Katniss, and Peeta or Haymitch. Upon realising this, I leave the stage and head to my old house.
I haven't been back to my old house since the games. There is dust on everything . I barely get in the door when its thrown open and Alisa hugs me.
"Oh Finch".
She hugs me as I cry on her shoulder. She knows, she must know, that I will be going in the arena. Snow won't let me get away again. Me, along with some of my best friends. Last time I survived on smarts and not strength, but this time I wont get so far. My time is limited. I'm going back.
