Chapter 21: Plan in Motion
"Okay! So you know the plan?" Scootaloo said, pausing in front of the entrance to the schoolhouse. Sunny Shine paused as well and nodded.
"Good." Scootaloo smiled deviously. Without another word, the two fillies swiftly entered the building.
Scoots kept her head low, trying not to make eye contact with anypony. However, she did catch Silver Spoon giving her a dirty look. She returned it with an equally dirty look of her own, then hurried to her seat. She glanced up at the chalkboard, which had a bunch of math problems written on it. She ignored the looks she knew she was getting from Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon and starting working quietly.
It was just a few minutes before recess, and Scootaloo was finishing up the math problems. Looking over her answers, she was pretty sure she got most of them wrong, but she didn't even care now.
She now sat in her chair, staring impatiently at the clock. Can't you go any faster? she thought.
By now, she could see everypony else who had finished the problems were getting antsy as well. Tension hung in the air like a bomb. Even Miss Cheerilee looked slightly bored.
One minute left, Scootaloo thought gratefully.
RIIING!
"Everypony, please bring up your papers and put them on my desk. Then you can go outside and have fun," Cheerilee announced, smiling.
Scootaloo eagerly shot out of her chair and placed her paper on her desk, then rushed outside. As she waited outside the doorway for Sunny, she watched Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara who were near the far side of the clearing, talking. Her eyes narrowed and she murmured under her breath. "Stupid snobs..."
"Hi." Scootaloo's head whipped around eagerly.
"Sunny! - Wait, what?" she stared at the two ponies in front of her who had nervous smiles on their faces. "...Sweetie Belle? Apple Bloom?" She gazed at them, puzzled and suspicious.
"Howdy, Scoots," said Apple Bloom.
"Hiya, Scoots!" Sweetie Belle greeted her as well.
"Um...hi. Why are you here?" Scootaloo questioned them.
"We...thought you might like some company!" Sweetie Belle offered.
"No thanks," Scootaloo replied flatly.
The two friends exchanged confused looks. "What's goin' on, Scootaloo?" Apple Bloom asked. "Somethin' wrong?"
"No," the pegasus replied quickly.
"Then let's hang out!" Sweetie said cheerfully.
Scootaloo sighed under her breath. "Fine."
The two ponies gave her bright smiles, just when Sunny Shine emerged from the schoolhouse. She quickly spotted her and said, "Hi, Scootaloo!" She walked up to her and glanced at Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom. "Who are they?"
"Oh! These are my - um, friends, Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle," answered Scoots.
"Nice to meet you," she stated, smiling.
They nodded at her.
"Anyway, um - Scootaloo?" Sunny lowered her voice. "I'd better go now, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon are probably waiting for me." She turned to Sweetie and Apple Bloom and said, "Well, it was nice meeting you, but I'd better go now!"
"So soon?" Sweetie Belle asked, frowning.
"Yes, I need to go...talk to somepony." She winked at Scootaloo and slipped away.
"Bye!" The three ponies called, waving.
Scootaloo waited for a few seconds, then suddenly said, "Excuse me." She then dashed away to follow Sunny.
The sunny-yellow filly glanced back, grinning. Then she dived behind a bush near the edge of the yard. Scootaloo, knowing what this meant, copied her movements and found herself face-to-face with the pegasus.
"What do you want, Sunny? You're supposed to be talking to those dumb snobs by now. Something wrong?" Scootaloo questioned the pony.
"I - I'm just not sure about this plan, Scoot," Sunny admitted quietly. "...What if it fails? T - there are just so many things that could go wrong! Like, what if I...messed up?"
The pegasus blinked, then let out a chuckle. "Aw, don't worry! I told you, this will work. I mean, I made it up after all," she boasted.
"I just have a bad feeling about this," she muttered.
Scootaloo ignored her remark and told her briskly, "Now you got to go and get that plan in action. Try to find Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon and let them approach you. Then go tell them about the 'fight' and stuff, blah blah blah. I'll be watching you!"
"Um, okay," Sunny responded uncertainly and trotted away.
After she was gone, Scootaloo immediately scrambled up to the bush they were hiding behind and peered over the top. Sunny was walking around the playground, scanning the grounds for Diamond Tiara and her equally snobby friend. She found them shortly, talking in a small clearing. Scootaloo watched as she waited for the two to notice and approach her.
It wasn't long before they turned and sneered at her. "I see you're back." Diamond Tiara nodded at her. "So, are you going to tell us the rest of that little story or what?"
"Um...yeah," she replied quietly.
"Well?" Silver Spoon prompted, gazing at her expectantly.
"Oh!...Well, they went into that shop and...stuff, a - and I didn't really see what happened inside because I was outside, and I didn't really want to sneak in - then, Scootaloo was storming out of the shop. She...looked really angry," Sunny lied.
The two rich ponies exchanged curious glances. "Do continue," Diamond Tiara said sweetly.
"Then Scootaloo said over her shoulder to Dark Chocolate - I think she was talking to, 'I HATE YOU! I DON'T EVER WANT TO SEE YOU AGAIN!' Dark Chocolate came out and looked really hurt. I think they had a fight or something. Anyway, I went home after that...so yeah," she finished, looking guiltily down at her hooves.
Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara stayed silent for a while, taking in this new information. Finally, Diamond Tiara said, "...Thanks, Sunny Shoe - or whatever your name is. This information will be great help to us. No, you don't get a reward. Goodbye." They trotted away, talking to each other in hushed voices and leaving Sunny staring after them.
"Rude," Scootaloo muttered under her breath.
"You know what's even more rude?" a squeaky voice spoke behind her. She spun around and found herself facing Apple Bloom and Sweetie Belle.
"You," Apple Bloom stated, jabbing her with a hoof and glaring at her accusingly.
"What? What did I do?!" she exclaimed in frustration.
"You know perfectly well what ya did! I can't believe that you and Dark Chocolate had a fight. Why? And what ya said after to him was really harsh," added Apple Bloom, frowning.
"I - I..." sputtered Scootaloo.
"What happened anyway?" Apple Bloom asked. "Why did you and Dark Chocolate have a fight anyway? I thought y'all were friends."
"It was his fault!" she exclaimed without thinking. "He - he said something mean to me!"
"What was it?" Sweetie urged.
"Um..." She racked her brain for something. "He...said that I was ugly?"
Apple Bloom snorted. "Ya really believe I believe somethin' that? I know you're lyin' to us, Scoots. I thought you'd know better than that."
"We were just about to forgive you, too," Sweetie murmured. "I miss you, Scoots. But I guess you have a reputation of breaking up with friends, huh?"
"N - no!...That's not true," Scootaloo said, flustered.
"I'll see ya around, Scoots," Apple Bloom sighed, turning away. Her two former friends walked away, leaving her hanging her head in shame.
"Sunny was right. My plan was terrible."
Yeah, this was a horrible chapter, but at least it's something. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed! I'll try to update the next chapter sooner...maybe on Christmas, as like a present or something...but no promises, okay? xD
