The Necessary Case

Chapter 2

Walter POV

The whole team was waiting for Ralph at the airport the next morning. Everyone had woken up at their normal time, except for Cabe, and stumbled out of their rooms for breakfast by eight thirty. Everyone sat down for a meal together, for the first time since Christmas. When Cabe came out of his room at ten to nine and Paige and I stood up to leave, he asked where we were heading to. Once we told them where we were going they all decided to come with us to collect him. That was an hour ago and now we were all patiently waiting for Ralph's plane from LA to arrive.

"Ralph!" Paige yelled, gabbing my attention from my conversation with Toby and Happy.

Ralph perked up at the sound of his mother's voice and walked towards us, pulling his bag behind him.

"Hi everyone! How did the case go?" Ralph asked the team after stepping out of his mother's embrace.

"We cleared that right up Ralphy-boy, now we can get some fun on before we fly back at the end of the week." Toby cheered before taking Ralph's bag from him and putting it on his shoulder.

"It's good to see you Ralph, how has school been?" Cabe asked as we were heading towards the car.

"It went okay, but I now have a score on the list of high scores on Proton Arnold." Ralph bragged slightly, grinning at me.

"Well, looks like I've got my work cut out for me." I joked, ruffling Ralph's hair as he got into the car.

"Walter, are you jealous of a twelve-year-old?" Toby asked me sarcastically, closing the trunk of the car after putting Ralph's bag inside.

"No, obviously not, I can play when I get back home." I whined.

"Walter, don't say that." Paige chastised from where she was standing beside me.

"Aww poor one-ninety-seven." Toby mocked as he took his seat next to Happy in the back of the car.

"Quiet down, kids." Cabe said as he started the engine and sped out of the airport parking lot.

•••

Cabe drove through London traffic from the airport back to our hotel with more caution than usual, I assumed it was because Ralph was in the car.

Paige and I had decided that we were going to invite the team out to dinner tonight and we would tell everyone our news there.

Everyone got out of the car and walked through the hotel and into the room. When we walked through the door to our room Toby put his hat down on the sideboard and walked to the fridge near the bar, pulling out a bottle of champagne.

"I believe celebrations are in order, we did complete a case without coming to near death after all." Toby joked as he reached behind him for six glasses.

"I second that!" Happy announced as she came through her bedroom door.

Toby poured six glasses of champagne and carried them over to the sofas that everyone was gathered around.

"Drink up, and prepare yourselves for three days of fun." Toby clinked glasses with Happy before taking a drink of his drink.

I looked across at Paige who had her head down, her eyes placed on the glass of champagne that Toby had handed her not twenty seconds before. She raised her head and locked eyes with mine, her eyes wide with worry. Before I could get up and reassure her, I was interrupted.

"Paige, what's wrong?" Toby wondered as he put his empty glass down on the table.

"Um… I…" Paige trailed off, unsure of how to answer the question.

Paige looked from Toby to me. I nodded and she stood up and walked over to me, before taking a seat beside me on the sofa I was sitting on.

"Why aren't you drinking, Paige?" Happy asked, a huge grin on her face.

"Because I can't." She mumbled, not meeting anyone's eyes.

"You what?" Happy pushed.

"I can't drink…" She trailed off.

Happy laughed before turning around to face Toby.

"I believe that you owe me fifty dollars, Doc." Happy announced, holding her hand out and waiting for Toby to put the money in it.

Toby huffed before taking his wallet from his pocket and handing Happy the owed fifty dollars.

"Wait, what?" Paige asked, confused.

"How on earth did you know?" I asked, wondering how they had figured it out.

Toby rolled his eyes before he answered.

"Uh, hello? Geniuses?" He said in a 'duh' voice, signalling to Happy and himself.

Paige looked between Happy, Toby and me, her mouth opening to say something, then closing when she couldn't find anything to say.

"Are you?" Ralph asked from where he was sitting beside Sly, he was bound to catch on soon enough.

Paige looked at me before smiling and nodding at Ralph.

Ralph cheered at the news before standing up and coming to hug his mother, he turned to me apprehensively wondering whether to hug me or not. I answered the question for him by opening my arms for him. Ralph laughed before stepping into the embrace, that Paige soon joined.

"So, when?" Cabe asked from where he was making a drink at the bar.

"I'm fourteen weeks so, mid-June?" Paige said, looking at me to confirm her guess.

I quickly did the calculation in my head before answering the question.

"Yes, seventeenth of June." I confirmed.

"We've got summer babies." Paige asked, stepping closer to me and snuggling into my side.

"Yeah, I suppose you… wait what?" Toby asked, confused.

Paige opened her mouth to speak before closing it again and blushing furiously.

"Yeah, you said summer 'babies', the Doc's onto something." Cabe said, passing Ralph a glass of orange juice.

"What did you mean?" Happy wondered.

Everyone looked towards Paige and I for their answer. This was absolutely not how we planned on telling them.

"Twins?" Sly caught on before the others.

Paige grinned sheepishly before looking down.

"Wow, this cyclone sure is getting bigger." Toby said, standing up to come and congratulate us.

"Congratulations, guys." Happy said, hugging Paige and placing a reassuring hand on my shoulder.

"That's impressive guys, did you know there is only a 2.4% chance of having twins?" Sylvester added.

"Uh, I didn't. But I'm sure that Walter looked it up already, right honey?" Paige asked looking at me with a huge grin on her face.

I laughed nervously before nodding slightly.

"Nothing wrong with that Walter, you're just being a. Daddy." Paige commented, running her fingers through the hair at the nape of my neck.

"How does everyone feel about dinner out to celebrate?" Cabe asked, coming out of the bedroom that was his for the next few days.

"I'm down, you paying Cabe?" Toby said, picking up his hat and hooking an arm around Happy's shoulder.

Cabe opened his mouth to object but he was interrupted by Toby before he could get a word in.

"Fabulous, thanks Cabe!" Toby hollered before he opened the door and walked into the hallway.

Happy grinned and picked up her jacket before following him.

"Come on guys, this cyclone must be hungry after what we did today!" Toby shouted from outside the room.

"Let's go, I'm riding shotgun!" Ralph shouted before Sylvester could say anything.

Paige and I laughed at the disappointed look on Sly's face before following everyone out of the room and to the car.

•••

Three days had passed since the team found out about the pregnancy. In that time, we had visited a theme park, gone sightseeing in London and visited Buckingham Palace. Currently, Happy and Paige were out shopping in the London shopping district. Paige is under strict orders not to buy anything baby related as we already have bags full at home in LA, but there is no doubt that she will come back with bags full of baby clothing. Toby, Cabe, Ralph, Sylvester and I were currently making use of the room at the hotel. Whilst using the television a few evenings ago, Toby had discovered an online gaming channel that we were all currently playing on.

'Walt, you need to live a little you've got two kids on the way'

I can still hear Toby's condescending voice in my ear. I sigh as Ralph wins the game, yet again. Toby mocks hurt for a few moments before standing up and chasing Ralph around the hotel room, he caught up to him before picking him up and slinging him over his shoulder.

"That's what you get for beating the game-master Ralphy-boy!" Toby hollered as he dropped Ralph on the sofa.

"Will you children be quiet! I'm trying to arrange tonight's flight home!" Cabe shouted, taking his phone away from his ear for moment and sighing before placing the receiver back over his ear.

We had spent the last three days relaxing and spending time together as friends and family. If I had to admit it, it was nice to get away from LA for a few days and spend some quality time with Paige, as well as the rest of our cyclone.

Cabe put his phone down on the table and sat on the armchair opposite Sly before clearing his throat to gain our attention.

"Okay gang, flight booked tonight for eight forty, so I guess we'll be eating at the airport. It was the earliest flight that I could get. Homeland wouldn't send a jet so we're going commercial again." Cabe told us.

"Knew Homeland would start being cheap again eventually." Toby sighed.

I thanked Cabe before he got up and announced he was going to pack his things.

Everyone's attention was drawn from the video game when the hotel room burst open and Paige and Happy walked in, their arms laden with shopping bags.

"Happy, are you aware that we are saving for a house?" Toby asked as he took in how many bags she had.

Happy grinned and smirked at Paige before putting all of the bags inside of the bedroom that she and Toby shared.

"How are you guys planning on getting all of that home?" Cabe asked as he came out of his bedroom.

"Ah, we'll manage." Paige brushed off the comment as she picked up the bags and walked into the bedroom that we shared.

"Do you guys want to go out for food before we leave?" Toby wondered.

"What time are we leaving?" Happy asked, coming out of the bedroom after depositing all of the bags on her bed.

"The flight is at twenty to nine so probably about seven-ish?"

"Yeah okay, we can grab food at the airport." Paige agreed, sitting beside me on the sofa.

Soon the whole team dispersed around the room. Happy and Toby thought it logical to pack now so they could enjoy the rest of their day, Sylvester and Ralph were playing chess on the dining table, Cabe was out taking a look around London, and Paige and I were sitting together in the lounge area, her on my lap and my hand on her swollen abdomen.

"How much did you buy?" I asked her quietly.

Paige blushed and looked down, knowing exactly what the question I asked meant.

"Only a little bit." Paige told me, using her forefinger and thumb to emphasise her point.

Cabe came in and interrupted our peace.

"Are you two aware that we are leaving in forty-five minutes." He asked, taking off his sunglasses and folding his arms.

Paige and I smiled sheepishly before grinning up at Cabe.

"I'll help you, honey." Paige resided, standing up and tugging on my hand to pull me up.

•••

"Guys! We need to go! Now!" Cabe bellowed through the hotel room.

Paige and I stood up from the sofas and walked through the door, closely followed by Ralph and Sylvester.

"Toby! Happy! Now!" Cabe bellowed again.

"God, give us a second!" Toby hollered as he and Happy walked through their bedroom door, pulling their suitcases behind them.

Before we knew It, we were all sitting in the SUV and driving through the gates into the airport. Everyone got out of the car and put their luggage on the two trolleys that Cabe collected when he got out of the car.

"At least we don't need to separate now that the mission is done." Sylvester commented as we walked over to our check in desk.

"Hello, can I help check you in today?" The woman asked Cabe as he approached the check in desk, the rest of the team in tow.

"Yes, I believe you can." Cabe said as he handed over the papers and passports of every member of the team.

The woman cleared the tickets and the passports before handing them back over the desk to Cabe. One by one, we lifted our luggage onto the conveyor belt so that it could be taken to the plane. The woman thanked us and bid us goodbye before calling forward the next customer.

"Are we still going for food?" Toby asked.

"Yes, where does everyone want to go?" Cabe asked the team.

"Pizza." Paige, Toby and Ralph answered the question all at once.

"Everyone good with that?" Cabe asked, gaining an affirmation from everyone before heading to the food court that was situated in the airport.

•••

"Flight 188 to Los Angeles International Airport is boarding, please make your way to gate 34." The automated voice came over the speakers alerting the team of their planes departure.

"Paige you ate that so fast, even faster than Toby." Cabe remarked, earning himself a laugh from Paige and a glare from Toby.

"Eating for three, can't help it." Paige laughed as she took my hand in hers and followed the team towards the gate.

"Which way is it?" Ralph asked as we exited the departure lounge.

"178… 179… 180… there it is!" Toby exclaimed, pointing towards a TV screen with the flight number printed on it.

Once again, Cabe handed over our passports and the tickets to be cleared by the steward that was standing at the gate. The steward smiled at Cabe and wished us a good flight before opening the door and sealing it behind us. We walked through the tunnel and down the stairs down to the airplane loading zone. When we exited the tunnel, the plane was directly in front of us, passengers climbing up the two sets of steps attached to the side of the A380. The plane was styled the same way as before, with the first-class tickets on the upper deck. One by one, the team made their way up the single storey spiral staircase that lead to the upper deck. Although the upper deck was the same design, due to the fact that the mission was completed, we were all sat together on one side of the compartment.

Minutes passed before the plane doors were sealed and the pilots voice came over the intercom system.

'Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard this eight forty PM flight to Los Angeles International. We are making time and will be taxiing to the runway momentarily. Our expected time had been increased to one thirty -seven PM local time due to unexpected turbulence over the Atlantic. Thank you for flying with British Airways, enjoy your flight.'

"We've got an eight-hour flight ahead of us, when you stand up can you get those mission reports out of my bag, If I can do them now it would save a lot of time." Paige asked me, her head resting lazily on my shoulder.

"Of course." I said, taking off my seatbelt and standing up to retrieve the mission reports as well as my laptop.

Paige POV

We were just over four hours away from landing back home. Due to the lateness of the flight we were on, they had turned out the lights in the cabin, the only light source coming from small lights on the roof of the cabin. I had just finished the mission reports and they were now tucked safely in my bag in the overhead locker. Happy was lounging, her head on her chair and her feet hanging over Toby's lap, she wasn't sleeping even though she looked shattered, she has been more fatigued recently. Toby was sitting, smiling, content to be with Happy and the half empty glass of scotch that was in his hand. Ralph was sitting across from Sly, using a collapsible wooden chess board that Ralph bought with him when he flew out. Cabe shut off hours ago, he was awake listening to his music through his headphones. Walter was still on his laptop, working on building up a code he was designing for a firewall server, I would give him another ten minutes before I close it. It was a precaution that he asked me to take, just in case he took an involuntary trip down the rabbit hole. My inner train of thought was disrupted when the steward made how way over to us.

"Can I get anyone any refreshments?" He wondered, smiling sweetly.

Cabe asked for a black coffee, Toby asked for a refill of his scotch and I asked for a lemonade, I had been craving it all day. I let my mind wonder and I wondered if my brother had left the garage yet… my brother.

I groaned upon realising something.

"What's up?" Toby wondered, his genius shrink mind coming into play.

"I realised that my brother is still in town, I'm going to have to tell him." I said, putting my hands over my bump. I had been doing that a lot recently.

"Tell him what?" Happy asked, intrigued by the conversation.

"About the babies, if he knows there's no guarantee that my parents won't find out, they'll want to be in their lives." I moaned.

"Why will they want to be their lives, they're not in Ralph's?" Walter wondered aloud.

"The reason they aren't in Ralph's life is because they don't know where I am, only my brother does. After I left with Drew they didn't know where I was going and they don't know we're in LA."

"Do you think he'll tell them?" Walter asked.

"I do, but I see him every so often, if I start to make excuses he'll figure it out, he always does." I replied, my mood worsening.

"Hey, we don't need to decide what we are going to do now." Walter said, lifting my chin to face him.

"Besides, it's Christmas in like ten days so we have that to look forwards to also…" Toby stated, taking another sip of his drink.

"As much as I hate it, I need to go Christmas shopping still, I keep putting it off." Happy said, not lifting her head from Toby's shoulder to speak.

"We have forty-eight-hours rest, Cooper is holding cases for two days and then we're back to working until Christmas Eve." Cabe said, taking out his earphones and taking the coffee that he was offered by the steward. Happy followed suit, sitting upright before taking hers and Toby's drinks from the tray.

"So, Hap. Now that we have a spare thirty seconds to breathe, how would you feel about looking at that venue tomorrow afternoon?" Toby asked, hooking his free arm over Happy's shoulders.

"What venue are you looking at?" I wondered.

"It's a small manor kind of place, I mean, there's only going to be like forty people there but our paycheque should cover the cost of the whole wedding, if we ever get it." Toby told me.

"You can have it when we're back, what are you going to do with it now? We're thirty-seven thousand feet in the air?" Cabe mocked, putting the now empty cup of coffee down.

Toby huffed before turning his attention back to Happy, waiting for her response.

"Yeah, okay. It really is about time was started planning at least some of it." Happy said.

"We still need to choose a date." Toby told her.

"How about February 2nd?" She wondered.

"Why February 2nd?" I asked, curious.

"Well, that was the date that Toby fell asleep on our first date, figured that if something good happens on that date I won't hold it against him for the rest of his life." Happy smirked.

"That's the date sorted then." Toby said shortly, causing Happy and I to laugh, we quietened down after a few glares from other passengers.

•••

The next few hours were quiet and peaceful, the lights were still off in the cabin and Walter and I were the only ones awake. Happy and Toby had dozed off hours ago, Happy's head resting on Toby's shoulder and his head resting on her hair. Sylvester and Ralph soon followed. Once Sylvester had won at chess, again, they decided to pack up the game and play later. Cabe was in and out, he woke up for short periods of time before going back to sleep once again.

"We need to think about what we're going to do about their rooms, we need to decide where they will be and what colour we are painting them…" I trailed off.

"Well, there's another room upstairs, if you wanted them to be closer to us we could ask if Ralph minded moving into Sylvester's old room. Or, we could have an extension put in the garage. Either way, we don't have to decide straight away, I read that it is healthy for newborn children to stay in the same room as their parents for up to six months after their birth." Walter informed me.

"Really?"

"Yes, we don't need to decide straight away and you still have twenty-three weeks to go." Walter said, putting his hand on my protruding stomach.

"Have you been to a scan yet?" Cabe asked, interrupting our reverie.

"Yes, I had one about a month ago." I said, taking my purse from under my chair and retrieving the scan that I always carried with me. I passed it to Cabe and he smiled, looking at the two babies on the photograph.

"It will only be a matter of time before Walter is chasing away the boys." Cabe joked, passing the photograph back to me.

I turned towards Walter to see his reaction and he was fast asleep, his head resting on the chair. Cabe and I laughed quietly, careful not to wake everybody in the cabin.

"Have you thought about their names yet?" Cabe asked, excited for the new members of the cyclone to arrive.

"We have a bit, we want to name the little girl after Megan, to honour her, you know? I said, not knowing what Cabe would say.

Cabe just grinned.

"That's a wonderful way to honour her memory, has he told his parents?"

"No, I don't think he's ready to tell them, I think they'll find out eventually though. Like my parents, I don't want them to know but they'll find out if I tell my brother. Although he doesn't say it often, Walter did see you as a father and he still does, so they'll have their grandad Cabe." I said, smiling as Cabe's eyes watered.

"It would be an honour, kid." Cabe replied, reaching across and touching my hand gratefully.

Cabe and I talked for a few more minutes before we were interrupted by the lights coming on in the cabin.

'Ladies and gentleman we are making our approach, please ensure that your seatbelts and tray tables are up as we prepare our decent. Local time is one thirty-six and the temperature is twenty-six degrees. We will be on the ground in around eighteen minutes, thank you for flying with British Airways, enjoy the rest of your day.'

Cabe and I took that as our cue to wake up the team. Cabe reached over and shook Toby's shoulder, startling him awake. Toby jumping woke up Happy who glared in Cabe's direction. I leant over and ran my fingers through Ralph's hair.

"Ralph, sweetie we're about to land…" Ralph swatted my hand away and I laughed before he sat up groggily, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.

"What's happening?" He asked.

"Nothing, we're about to land sweetie." I said, ruffling his hair once more before turning towards Walter.

"Walter, time to wake up…" I said as I shook his shoulder.

Walter opened his eyes slowly, adjusting to the light that was now streaming through the cabin.

"We're landing?" He asked sleepily.

"Yes, we're about eighteen minutes off the ground according to the pilot." I told his as he raked his fingers through his unruly hair in a bid to flatten it down slightly.

"Oh, okay." Walter stated before packing away his laptop into his satchel.

"What is everyone doing tonight?" I asked the group.

"We were planning on staying at the garage, it would be easier than getting back to our place." Toby said, Happy nodded beside him.

"If everyone isn't too tired we can order takeout and get the tents out, it's been a while since we've done that." I suggested.

I gained affirmative from everyone as the planes tyres hit the tarmac.

Due to our priority seating, we were allowed to leave the plane first. We headed through duty free and down to the baggage collection centre to collect our luggage. Once everyone had their luggage on the trolleys that Toby collected, the team followed Cabe into the car park where he called for two taxis to take us all to the garage. We weren't waiting for long and as soon as they arrived, the team split into the two taxis so that we could get home.

Due to the lack of traffic between LAX and the garage, we made it back in no time. Walter unlocked the barriers on the doors and windows using his phone before opening the red door and walking inside.

Over the next half hour, the majority of the team spread out through the garage, completing their own individual tasks and activities. Walter had disappeared up to the loft to get Ferret Bueller out of his upstairs cage. Cabe had vanished into the kitchen to make coffee as soon as his bags hit the ground. Ralph and Sly were helping Toby sort out the roof for our team slumber party.

All of a sudden, my legs gave way and I fell to the ground. Pain was coursing through my stomach, making me delirious. I clutched my abdomen helplessly before crying out.

"Paige!" Happy was the only member of the team downstairs. She ran from her work area to where I knelt on the ground.

"Happy, pain…" I mumbled.

"I know, Doc get down here now!" Happy hollered through the garage, gaining the attention of the whole team.

Walter and Toby appeared at the top of the stairs at the same time, before sprinting towards me.

Walter knelt down beside Happy, lifting my head into his lap.

"Paige, you need to focus on me okay, tell me where the pain is." Toby said, his doctors brain kicking into gear.

"My stomach…" I mumbled before the world went black and disappeared from view.

Happy POV

"Okay, no bleeding so there's no sign of a miscarriage, so I don't think that's what's happening here, I think…" Toby said before stopping.

"Toby, what is it? What's wrong with her?" Walter snapped, worried for Paige and the babies.

Toby pulled away slightly, his hand still resting on Paige's abdomen.

"They're all fine, look I'll show you what caused the pain." Toby said, lifting Walter's hand and placing it on Paige's stomach

Walter's expression changed from one of worry to one of surprise. Walter grinned and looked towards Paige when she began to stir. Paige's eyes flew open and her hands went straight towards her stomach, wincing when the pain coursed through her once more.

"Walter, what's happening?" Paige mumbled, her head still in Walter's lap.

"There's nothing wrong, you just need to stay still whilst Toby asks you some questions, okay sweetheart?" Walter asked calmly.

Paige didn't answer, she just nodded her head and looked towards Toby.

"What do you want to ask, Doc?"

"Okay, is this the first time you've had pain? Did you have any pain when you were pregnant with Ralph?" He asked calmly.

"Yes this is the first time, and no I didn't, Toby please tell me if everything is alright." She pleaded.

"Everything is fine, can you feel them?" Toby asked.

Paige was confused until another pain shot through her. Her eyes focused on her stomach and she reached down and covered Walter's hands with hers.

"They were kicking? That's what the pain was?" She asked, startled.

"Yeah, when you went to the doctor how many weeks did she say you were?" I asked, curious.

"She said between fourteen and fifteen weeks, but Ralph didn't kick until like twenty weeks…" Paige trailed off, counting the weeks back on her fingers.

"Well my guess is that you are further along that you first thought, because they are twins they will be smaller so it can be easily misinterpreted." Toby guessed.

"So, what now?" Paige asked.

"Now, you are going upstairs to rest whilst we order food and set up upstairs, I will come and wake you when everything is done okay?" Walter said, picking up Paige in his arms before she could object.

Toby and I watched after them as they disappeared up the stairs. I followed Toby over towards his desk. He sat down in his chair and put his head in his hands, the worry still evident in his eyes.

"Toby…" I murmured, pulling his chair backwards and sitting in his lap. His arms automatically wrapped around me so I wouldn't fall. My hand went to the hair at the nape of his neck.

"Sorry Hap, just a bit overwhelming, you know?" He said, running his hand up and down my hip.

"Yeah, I do. They'll be fine you know, they have a whole family to keep them safe here, Walter will put his foot down sooner or later about Paige being on cases. They aren't in any danger, Doc." I said, resting my head in the crook of his neck.

"I know, baby. Do you still want to see that house tomorrow?" He asked me, changing the subject.

"Yeah we should, we should also call that manor place we wanted to book." I murmured, too comfortable to comprehend saying anything else.

"How about I'll do that and you can help Ralph and Sly sort out the tents?" He asked.

"Five more minutes, I'm far too comfortable here." I murmured, Toby laughed as his arms tightened around me.

"Okay, baby." Toby mumbled, running his hand through my hair.

"Hap?" Toby said, five minutes later.

"What?" I mumbled, half asleep and far too comfortable to care about what was happening.

"You were going to help Sly?" He reminded me.

"Yeah, I was." I mumbled, not making an effort to get up.

"Happy…" Toby trailed off, laughing.

"I'm going! Call that place, second of February remember?" I huffed, standing up and kissing Toby chastely before heading towards the stairs.

•••

"That's the venue booked…" Toby announced as he walked onto the roof.

"They had the date?" I asked, astounded that they had the date at such short notice.

"Yep, I arranged a viewing next Thursday for us to see it." He said, coming over and sitting beside me where I was sitting on a mat near the fire.

"Okay that's good." I said, resting lazily against Toby.

"Let's get the s'mores going, guys." Paige announced, taking marshmallows and chocolate out of the basket of food she had bought up from the kitchen.

And so, the team sat around the fire, the warmth emanating from the fire around them and the conversation flowing freely. The cyclone sat together, enjoying their time together as friends and as a family.
