Hello everyone! This next story comes from a suggestion from CTs-Th! We're gonna shift gears from our usual spicy stories to something a little more... mellow.
Short disclaimer... The following story is inspired by two songs:
Slow Me Down by Emmy Rossum and The Heart Won't Lie by Reba McEntire (with Vince Gill)
If you haven't heard these songs I highly recommend youtubing them! They're both great.
Some parts of this story have some lyrics borrowed from both songs. Also the story tries to capture the "feel" from both of these songs. Perhaps I succeeded? Perhaps I didn't? But... I, myself, enjoy this story and I hope you guys do as well!
Story 11: The Night Sky
They say it's the most powerful thing in the world, love. I don't believe that—at least, I didn't at first. I thought I had been in love before… I thought I had been in love with several guys. I thought that's what love was, ya know? Dating, kissing, the occasional sex. Well, come to find out, it's much deeper than that.
It happened at a party, the end of the year get-together at the Smash Mansion. I sat by myself in the corner of the room. Marth, my supposed boyfriend, was too busy entertaining his gentlemen company. With each violent sip from my cup, the anger built in my eyes and my heart grew heavier. The time with Marth was fleeting, and he decided to spent this time with other men.
My paper cup was crushed in my hand and the rest of the drink fell into my legs. I jumped up from the couch and used this as an excused to leave. I quickly left the main hall and headed outside. The night air cooled my skin that had been heated by anger. I took a deep breath and exhaled loudly.
"What the hell is wrong with you, Pit?" I asked myself. I mean there had to be something wrong with me, because keeping a relationship was next to impossible. I leaned against the railing, looked up to the sky, and sighed once again.
"Who's out here?" A voice from the darkness said quietly.
My wings shot up in surprise.
"Pit?" The voice asked again. I looked into the dark and saw a figure approaching me. The Hero of Time, clad in his usual green tunic, and holding a large glass of wine, approached me.
"Link?" I asked.
Link approached me and smiled. "Yeah." There was a short pause before Link spoke again. "Are you all right?"
"Yes." I lied.
"No you're not." Link stated. "No one leaves a party and sighs loudly unless something's wrong."
"Well—I… uh…" I stuttered. "Well, what are you doing out here?"
Link shot me a look telling me that this conversation was not going to be about him. I sighed again and began to speak.
"It's Marth." I confessed. "It's… just… I wanted to spend time with him tonight, and he wants to spend that time with other guys. And he always says it means nothing, and I shouldn't worry. I guess he's right… but I'm tired of putting on this front that it doesn't bother me…" I paused. "I guess it's my fault anyway for keeping up this stupid act."
"Here." Link said as he handed me his glass of wine. "You could use a sip or two."
"Thanks." I said as I took the glass from him and took a small gulp. I handed him the glass back and sighed again. "Life sucks."
"Here, have the rest." Link said smiling as he gave the glass back to me.
I took the glass and sipped some more. Link and I stood next to each other and gazed upon the starry sky.
"Why are you out here?" I asked again.
Link sighed a happy sky and spoke. "I'm here for the sky. Too many people take the night sky for granted." Link stated. "How many times have you came outside and really looked at the stars?"
I shrugged.
"I do it every night." Link stated. "The stars, the moon, everything… It's just all so beautiful, it's all so unfathomable. Their wonders never cease to amaze me. It seems each night I can find something new to admire. I always look for the beauty in everything… The night sky, however, is the most beautiful thing I've yet to witness." Link said softly.
"That's amazing." I said I looked to the stars.
"See that star right there?" Link said pointing up the shimmering light in the sky.
"The really bright one?" I asked.
"Yes!" Link shouted excitedly, "That star is trillions of light years away from us, but its fire is burning so brightly that we can see it all the way from here. Isn't that amazing? And that same star could have a solar system just like ours. Someone could be looking at our star and wondering the same thing. Pit, you and I could be linked to total strangers just by looking at the sky."
I was silent.
"It truly is amazing." Link said again his head focused upwards. After several moments of silence, Link sighed. "I could look at it all night." I smiled in response.
I looked up at Link and saw the stars reflect in his cerulean eyes. His smile never ceased, even when his eyes averted their focus from the sky to my own eyes. Our eyes stayed locked and for a brief moment I was lost completely in his star-filled eyes.
"PIT!" An familiar voice shouted from the doorway. Link broke eye contact first and turned towards the source of the ruckus. I turned back as well and cursed under my breath.
"Hello, Marth." Link said cheerfully to Marth who stood at the doorway.
"I've been looking all over for you!" Marth shouted as he approached me. I nodded in response. "Come on, I'm ready to head back to the room!"
"All right." I said quietly. I turned to Link. "Good night, Link."
Link nodded, smiled, and spoke. "Good night, Pit. Good night, Marth."
"See ya." Marth shouted and lead me back into the Smash Mansion. Once we got back into the room Marth turned to me.
"What were you doing with Link?" He asked sternly.
"We weren't doing anything. We were looking at the sky." I stated.
"Staring into each others eyes doesn't look like star-gazing to me." Marth said.
"Marth, listen to me. We weren't doing anything."
"Don't you fucking lie to me." Marth shouted. "I saw that look in your face."
"So you can have guys all over you, groping you, but I can't even look at another guy?" I asked.
"Not when you're looking at him like that!" Marth shouted.
"You're not being fair."
"I don't have to be fair, god dammit!" Marth shouted. "You're my fucking boyfriend; I shouldn't have to worry about you running off with some son of a bitch in an ugly hat."
I was silent for a moment. "Let's go to bed. I'm tired."
Marth sighed heavily before nodding in agreement, he and I climbed into bed and I slept embraced in his arms.
I met Link the next day.
"No… Hold it like this." Link said as he adjusted the blue ocarina in my hands. "It'll be easier to maneuver your fingers that way."
"I have no idea what I'm doing." I laughed.
"Just… blow." Link said shrugging, "move your fingers over the holes, just get a feel for it."
I nodded and began blowing air through the instrument, and high notes filled his room. Link laughed as I shuffled my fingers along ocarina making a cacophony of noises.
"You're so good." Link said, his statements dripping with sarcasm.
"Thanks!" I said as I nudged him in the side.
"Do you want to come watch the stars with me again tonight?" Link asked.
"Link, I'd love too." I responded. Link smiled in response.
"Where are you going?" Marth's scowled.
"Just outside." I responded I said as I approached the door.
"To see Link… Again?" Marth asked. My eyes shot to the floor. Marth nodded and turned his head away from me. "Remember what you said to me the day we first started dating." I didn't respond. "You said 'You're the person I want to spend my life with.' You said that no matter what, we'd stay together, that nothing would separate us." I looked up in shock and saw Marth wipe a tear from his face.
"Marth…" I said as I placed my hand on his shoulder. "I assure you… I'm not going anywhere. I promise. I just enjoying look at the stars. That's all… I promise." I said.
Marth wiped his eyes again and looked at me. "I love you, Pit."
"I love you too." I wrapped Marth into a hug and kissed him quickly before leaving the room.
I never made it outside. I rested my back against the wall and lowered myself to the ground. I growled out loud in anger and gripped my hair tightly. My head and my heart were colliding in one big, chaotic mess. Marth is who I had committed my life too, the man I promised to grow old with. He loves me… I know he does, I saw his tears, his real tears. My head is saying to do the rational thing. Stay with Marth, that I'm committed to him… but my heart… my heart says otherwise. It pulls me towards Link. It leaps whenever I see him. It's the reason I'm in this mess. I hate it.
I feel my warm tears travel down my cheeks and onto my knees. I threw my head against the wall and let the tears fall freely. I cried long into the night, and only went back into my room once I knew Marth was asleep.
"I missed you last night." Link said softly as I entered his room.
"I'm sorry, I got busy last night." I lied.
"Something's wrong." Link said. I didn't respond. "Pit, are you all right?"
I could feel the tears coming back into my eyes, but I took a deep breath to repress them.
"Let's go for a walk." Link said suddenly. He opened his door and I followed him outside. Nature was in a chipper mood, the wind was blowing through the leaves and the birds chirped happily. Link smiled as he gazed upon the trees.
"It's beautiful out." Link said as he breathed in the air. I nodded in response. We began walking away from the mansion. The silence between us lingered until Link spoke. "Pit, tell me what's wrong."
"Nothing's wrong." I lied.
"You're terrible at lying." Link said. I nodded in response.
"I just… can't do this anymore." I said suddenly.
"Do what?" Link asked.
"I can't keep this up. I'm trying to keep it all together, but… I just... can't." I said as I felt the tears building up again. "My head is telling me to stay with Marth… But my heart—"
Link interrupted me. He stopped walking and turned towards me. "Let me stop you right there, Pit. I'm not sure how you intend to finish this sentence but always listen to your heart. The heart cannot and will not lie to you."
I nodded in response. "My heart… My heart wants you, Link." Link nodded in response. Link took my hand into his and gave me a squeeze.
"No one can make this decision for you." Link said. "Come on, let's head back." Link dropped my hand and we walked back towards the mansion. Before we went back inside I stopped.
"Link…" I said softly. Link looked at me, waiting for me to finish. I didn't know what to say. Link took my hand again and we locked eyes. He rubbed his thumbs over my hands and smiled, then wrapped me into a hug.
"I understand, Pit." Link said. "You don't have to say anything." He pulled out of the hug and looked at me and spoke again. "Your heart gives you away, you know that?" Link said with a laugh. I laughed as well. Our eye contact was broken by a loud noise. We turned towards the mansion and saw Marth's fist against the window. My heart fell. Marth quickly turned away from the window and disappeared into the mansion.
"I…" I said, "I'll be back." Link nodded and I ran inside the mansion and arrived in my room. Marth was standing with his fists clenched.
"Marth…" I started to say. Marth was silent for a long amount of time until he turned towards me and slowly approached me. I stood firm.
"You promised me…" Marth said. "You said you loved me."
"I do—" I was interrupted by Marth. His hand whipped up from his sides and struck me across the cheek. The slap echoed through the room.
I raised my hand to my cheek and lowered my eyes. Marth spoke again.
"You're a liar." He shouted, "You don't love me, and you never did."
"Marth…" I was stopped again as Marth raised his hand once more, but he lowered it quickly and collapsed on his bed in tears.
I stared at Marth for several moments before speaking.
"Goodbye, Marth." I said finally and left the room.
I quickly made my way back to the outside of the mansion, back to Link. I opened the door and saw Link sitting and admiring a small bird hopping from branch to branch. He broke his focus from the bird and turned his attention towards me.
"Pit…" Link said calmly, "Are you okay?"
"Yes." I stated. "I'm fine." I approached Link and he stood up, and wrapped me into another hug. I felt Link's embrace all around me and smiled as I melted into him.
"So." Link said as he pulled away from the hug. "I want you to meet me here at dusk."
"I will." I said. "I promise."
"Don't stand me up this time." Link said with a smile. I nodded in response and followed Link back into the mansion.
As I entered my room, I saw Marth sitting on his bed.
"I'm sorry it had to end this way." Marth said slowly.
"Me too." I responded. Marth kept his eyes locked on his boots. The deafening silence filled the room. I approached my bed and sat down. I did my best to avoid looking at Marth. I didn't want to see him cry, and I didn't want to start another confrontation.
"Do you believe in soul mates?" Marth broke the silence.
I paused before I answered. "I don't know."
"I think two souls can be connected. I think that the souls will be pulled to each other no matter what." Marth reflected. "Even in past lives these souls will find a way to connect with each other. Nothing can prevent it."
I listened to Marth and nodded in response.
"They say love is the strongest force in the world…" Marth said. "That's why separated souls will join eventually. Love's pull will never falter to bring them together." Marth looked up to me. "I am no match for the power of love, Pit." He paused for a few more seconds. "I want you to be happy."
I nodded in response. "You too, Marth… Thank you."
It was dusk. I quickly made my way outside and was greeted by Link who sat on a large red blanket placed on the ground.
"Welcome!" Link said with a smile as he looked up to me. "Care to join?"
I nodded excitedly and quickly joined Link on the ground. He laid his back on the ground and put his hands underneath his head. I emulated his actions.
We stared up the sky and he sighed heavily.
"I'm glad you're here, Pit." Link said with a smile.
"I am too, Link." I said as I focused on the stars above me.
After we laid in silence for several moments, Link move his arms and wrapped it around me.
"Come here." Link said softly and pulled me closer to him. My head rested on his shoulder and I smiled.
"Look!" Link said pointing up with his other hand. "A shooting star!"
I watched the bright light streak across the sky and smiled.
"I know it's just rocks burning up in the atmosphere." Link said happily, "but I can't help think that they grant wishes."
"Yeah." I said quietly. "What did you wish for?"
Link turned his head to me and simply whispered. "You."
My heart jumped and I turned to look at him. The stars reflected in his brilliant cerulean eyes. He smiled at me, move his hand from underneath my head, and propped himself up. His eye contact with me maintained.
"What?" He asked with a smile.
I smiled. "I wished for the same thing…" I said quietly.
Link smiled and took one hand and caressed my cheek. I lay looking at him, our eyes never ceasing to lose contact. He moved closer to me, his eyes shot down to my lips, then back up to my eyes. I held my position as he drew closer. Then in a passionate spark our lips connected.
I felt Link move closer and his fingers brushed through my hair. His soft lips stayed connected to mine. I closed my eyes smiled slightly as Link continued to kiss me. His fingers continued wave through my hair and I placed my hand on the back of his head pushing him closer to me. We stayed connected as time ticked by, as the stars twinkled overhead, as the night sky looked down upon us.
After Link broke the kiss he opened his eyes and smiled at me.
"That was wonderful." I said with a smile. Link nodded and laid back onto the blanket and pulled me closer to him. "Do you believe in soul mates?" I asked.
"Yes." Link responded, "whole-heartedly."
"I think I do too." I responded.
"I like to think that the stars are like soul mates." Link stated. "All these stars are trillions of light-years apart and yet they are strong enough to shine their light to other stars. Their burning light is powerful enough to make those distances seem miniscule. See how bright those stars shine? Even though they're so far away… we can still seem them. Soul mates are the same, the power of love will always find a way to connect, no matter the distance."
"I agree." I responded. I looked at Link, who looked back at me. Our lips met again. After the kiss broke, I looked to Link and spoke.
"I think you're my soul mate." I said quietly. I mentally kicked myself, this is possibly the cheesiest thing I could think of.
"I think you're mine too." Link smiled. "I'd like to think the night sky brought us together. Its beauty allured me outside that night, like it always does. If I hadn't been out there, we probably wouldn't be here right now."
"Yeah." I replied. Link squeezed me tighter and I drifted to sleep. We slept through the night in each others arms, under the blanket of stars, and slept until the sun broke over the horizon.
"Good morning." Link said with a smile as our eyes connected in the morning light.
"Hi." I laughed. "I can't believe we slept outside."
"I do it all the time." Link smiled.
"Link…" I said softly. "Last night was amazing. I had never had a feeling like that before. My heart felt like it was doing flips. I was so happy."
"That's love, Pit." Link said with a smile. "I felt it too."
"I…" I started to say. Link looked at me. "I… I love you… Link."
Link smiled and pulled me into another kiss. After he broke he spoke again. "I love you like the night sky."
I looked at him in slight confusion.
"The night sky is endless, beautiful, and unfathomable, filled with twinkles from extremely powerful stars. The endless wonder of the night sky is the only way I describe my love towards you… Pit."
That man sure has a way with words. His brilliance and wonder shined just as powerful as the stars in the night sky. I truly felt connected to Link; I could feel a connection that I had honestly never felt with anyone else ever before. Was he my soul mate? I could never know for sure, but what I can say is that our love for each was just like the night sky. Endless, powerful, and beautiful.
Well that's that. What'd ya guys think? I hope you enjoyed it. I certainly enjoyed writing it. It may have been a little bit cheesy... but hey! Who doesn't love some cheesiness?
