It had been two weeks since Tori had made the decision to go ahead and go through with the experiment that would end up with her having her and Jade's baby, and currently the two girls were sitting in one of the many lobbies at the hospital they were told to go to over the phone. As Tori sat in one of the couches they had there, reading a magazine article about a Shelby Marx, Jade was pacing back and forth in front of her with a scowl as she kept looking at the doorway that the doctors used.
"Calm down Jade, glaring at the door isn't going to make her come quicker," Tori said as she glanced over the magazine at her.
"She told us to be here at ten thirty to meet her Vega, and look at what time it is, it's almost eleven," Jade ranted as she stomped her foot on the tile floor, "you think she have the decency to be on time."
"Maybe she got caught up with another couple Jade," the singer pointed out as she noticed a couple of nervous looking girls looking at the thespian, "I mean we're hardly the only group here."
This caused Jade to huff and sit down next on the couch next to Tori, taking the magazine that the Vega girl was reading and turning to the same article that she was reading. Rolling her eyes, Tori looked around and watched as other patients walked around, giggling as she watches a mother try to calm down her young daughter. As she sat there this gave her time to think about what had happened in the past week since they agreed to do this experiment. True to her word, Jade had talked to her parents about what they had planned, Tori going with her for emotional support, and oddly enough they were very calm about it. Jade's step mom just smiled and hugged her daughter, Jade going stiff for a few seconds before hugging her back making Terri West smile even more. Jade's father merely looked at her for a few seconds before clearing his throat and ushering Jade into his office so that they could talk alone. As Tori sat in the West Family living room, worried that something bad would happen to Jade, she looked over and saw that Jade's mother was smiling as she picked up the cups that they had set out and taking them into the kitchen.
"Don't worry about them, Jonathan and Jade have been getting better at understanding each other, I'm sure that they're just talking about if she believes she's doing the right thing."
Those were the words that Mrs. West had left Tori with and she soon found out that she was right and had nothing to worry about when Jade and her father walked out and Jade walked over to her and gave her hand a squeeze. The youngest Vega child wondered what was said between the two of them but Jade shook her head and told her not to worry about it and that everything was okay, her father was proud of her and that was the all she needed to know of what was said. After that the two had started talking about what they were going to do for their date, Jade just smirking and telling Tori not to worry and she would tell her what to wear. They had planned to go that night and Tori still didn't know what Jade had planned but, again true to her word, Jade had shown up that night and picked out some clothes for her to wear that night.
"Jade West and Victoria Vega," a voice called out, making Tori look up to see a blond haired nurse standing at the open door and looking around.
"That's us," Jade muttered standing up and holding out her hand for Tori.
Tori smiled and took the offered hand before standing up and following her pale friend into the hallway that held a bunch of doctors' offices. Following the nurse for a short while they finally came to a doorway with a plate on it reading 'Dr. Megan Hart,' and the nurse opened the door and smiled at them.
"Dr. Hart will be with you in just a moment, she just had to run to the bathroom real quickly," she said as they walked into room.
"Thank you," Tori replied with a smile of her own as Jade plopped down on to the couch in the office.
As the nurse nodded and left the room to go about her other duties, Tori took this time to look around the room to try to see if she could gauge just what this doctor was like and if she should be worried. The whole back wall, not surprisingly, was covered in bookshelves filled to the brim with different kinds of medical books and other knick-knacks. The floor was carpeted with a soft grey carpet that had black vines decorated on it, her mahogany desk sitting near the back, leaving just enough room between it and the bookshelves for a person to sit there and be able to turn around just a bit. The two side walls were covered in different medical posters, and a couple of funny motivational posters, and the wall to her right held a clock just off to the side closest to the door, more than likely allowing the doctor to look up out of the corner of her eyes instead of turning her head to look at it. Finally, the door behind Tori opened up and in walked in a woman who looked to be in her late twenties early thirties, with her long honey blond hair pulled back into a bun and wearing the normal doctor scrubs with a stethoscope around her neck.
"Sorry for being late ladies, one of my patients came in with a broken arm and I had to do some x-rays real quick before sending him to someone who could help fix it," the woman said with an apologetic smile, "my name is Dr. Megan Hart, it's nice to meet you."
"It's nice to meet you too," Tori said smiling back at her.
"Sup," Jade said with a curt nod of her head.
Tori shook her head and groaned as Dr. Hart merely smiled at the two girls yet again and walked over to her desk, taking a seat and opening her laptop. Pulling up their files, something that she had obtained from the girls' doctors she quickly looked over them and tried to see if there was anything that she had overlooked earlier when she was neck deep in other files. This was something she liked about actually meeting with potential participants for experiments, getting actual one-on-one time with them and getting to know them. Plus, this was the part of her pre-experiment when she started to weed out participants that would not help in her experiment keep the ones that she thinks were a good fit for the experiment. She had already crossed a few couples that didn't show up and hadn't even called to say that wouldn't be there, and found some couples that she felt might be a good match for what she was looking for.
"Alright girls it looks like everything is in order with your files," Dr. Hart said turning her chair to face them, "so then let's get this meeting started shall we, is there anything you would like to ask me right off the bat?"
"Yeah how exactly are you planning on do this experiment?" Jade asked leaning back on the couch and crossing her arms over her chest, "I mean it's not like either of us have a…"
"Jadelyn!" Tori yelped as she stared at the pale girl next to her.
"What we don't have one, not unless you've been hiding something from us," Jade responded with a shrug.
Tori groaned yet again and Dr. Hart couldn't help but to chuckle to herself as she watched them, she had just met these two but already she felt that she was going to like them. From what she could gather by just watching them interact with each other she could already tell just what kind of personalities that they had. Jade was obviously the more daring one of the two, and from the looks of it could be quite dangerous if she was cornered, or even if she wasn't cornered by the glint of steel she could see in her boot. Tori on the other had seemed to be very mother like and it appeared that, despite Jade's annoyance, she had a certain way of keeping the pale girl calmed down, something that Dr. Hart was sure would be good later on down the line. Sensing that their little argument wasn't going to end soon, somehow taking a turn from male anatomy to something about a cat's brother, oh wait Cat with a capital C she realized, she cleared her throat and smiled at them as they looked at her.
"Anyway to answer your question Miss. West the way that the experiment will work, if you are chosen, is actually quite simple," she explained turning her laptop so that they could see the screen.
Clicking on a file that she had on her desktop, she brought up some slides that she had used to first present her experiment to some other scientist that were the reason that she was able to do the experiment, and brought up the picture of a DNA strand.
"You see like the flier that you saw stated, the main purpose of this experiment is to see if we can initiate a pregnancy between two females," Dr. Hart told them as she moved to the next slide, this one showing two generic female figure next to the DNA, "what we will do is take the DNA from participant A and place it into the womb of participant B."
"Okay but how do you plan on doing that?" Jade questioned, Tori nodding her head in agreement.
"We plan on using a pseudo-sperm we created in the lab, we hope that it is enough like the sperm from a male that if place the DNA of a female in it that it will have the same effect," Megan explained, bringing up a picture on said pseudo-sperm, "it's actually quite an interesting creation."
"Pseudo-sperm?" Tori wondered as she looked at it.
"Yeah I know it doesn't sound that good but that's basically what it is," Megan chuckled with a shake of her head.
Tori bit down on her lower lip, quietly listening in on the conversation between the doctor and Jade as the thespian got more information on what was going to be put into one of them. As the two talked a few things that the doctor brought up that she could feel made her heart skip a beat, particularly when she hesitantly said that, yes they had managed to successfully place the DNA in the pseudo-sperm, but there had been a few times where something went wrong and there was a slight mutation in the genes.
"Now wait a second, you said a few times," Jade pointed out, her eyes narrowing, "just how many is a few times?"
"I can promise you that we have placed the DNA into the vessel fifty times, and out of those fifty we have maybe seen the mutation four times on record," Dr. Hart promised, resting her chin on her interlaced fingers.
"But there's still a possibility of a mutation?" Tori asked frowning, hesitation on her voice.
Megan picked up on this hesitation and sighed, not liking what she was going to have to say next.
"There will always be a slight possibility of mutation," she explained biting down on her lower lip, "but that's the case even in a normal pregnancy, the problem that we have ran into during the time we were drawing this up on the computer is…"
She paused, not sure how to break the news to them and could see the half Latina girl freeze add the pale girl narrowed her eyes. This was going to be hard to tell them, already Megan could tell that Tori, if not both of them, wouldn't be too thrilled at the idea of what could be a very real possibility.
"Well?" Jade growled, "What's the issue?"
"...The issue that we have ran into is that...there is a fifty percent chance the baby won't survive."
The room became deathly silent as no one said anything, Tori and Jade out of shock and Dr. Megan as she gauges their reactions. It happens swiftly and the next thing that Jaffe knows is Tori is throwing up in the trash can and she's next to hey rubbing her back. Megan frowned as she watched the scene in front of her, her heart crying out to the poor girl that she was sorry that she even brought it up.
"Do you mind giving us a moment?" Jade muttered as she continued to rub Tori's back, the singer trying to catch her breath.
"Of course take all the time you need," Dr. Hart replied, standing up and walking over to the door, "I'll be just down the hallway when you're ready to talk again."
As the door closed behind the doctor, Jade returned her attention back to Tori, her friend and current possible Co-mother finally breaking normally again. The thespian knew wished that the doctor hasn't said that, but she understood why she did. They needed to know that, needed to know that there was a very very real possibility that the child might not survive, and she also knew that Tori would never forgive herself if they happened. Even Jade herself would be heartbroken about it, but she also knew they if anything Tori would more then likely refuse to move for a good while if they happened.
"You going to be okay Tori?" Jade asked as she continued to rub jet back.
"Y-Yeah, sorry I...I don't know why that happened," Tori groaned as they say back down on the couch, "she said that the child might not survive and I...I guess I couldn't stomach that thought."
"Yeah don't worry about it," Jade told her comfortingly, "I get it, I'm not to fond of the thought of a kid dying myself."
"Jade I'm not so sure about this now," the singer whispered looking at the ground, "what if the baby doesn't survive, I don't think I can live with that."
Jade looked at her friend and pulled her into a hug, the half Latina's head resting on her chest as she storked her hair. It was these moments that Tori enjoyed the most out of all of the times that she spent with the West girl, the moments where Jade would show her softer side and Tori always treated them with the utmost respect. As the two of them sat there, Jade kept her attention on Tori's breathing, trying to make sure that she was calming down instead of getting steadily closer to a freak out that Jade knew was just around the corner.
"Tori you heard Dr. Hart, yes there's a chance of a mutation but it's not a big chance," she stated looking down at her, "and yes there's a chance that the baby might not survive but you need to remember that there's also a chance that the baby will survive."
"But what if the baby dies?" Tori asked, feeling her heart rate start to pick up again.
"But what if the baby lives?" Jade challenges her friend, "Wouldn't the risk of having the baby and making sure that it lived be greater than if we don't and never know?"
"But…"
"Tori, I told you before that if you feel uncomfortable with doing this then I'm not going to force you, well this is it this is your last chance to tell me if you really want to do this or not," the young West girl told her, making sure that Tori was looking her in the eyes, "if you don't want to do this then we will walk out that door right now and tell Dr. Hart that we have decided to not be considered, but if you feel like we can do this then I'll go get her and we'll tell her that we're interested."
"I think she already knows we're interested since we're here," Tori mumbled with a roll of her eyes.
"You know what I mean," Jade replied poking her forehead.
Tori chuckled and leaned back against Jade's chest, letting her mind sort through the jumbled mess of thoughts that she needed to go through in order to give Jade an answer. On one hand they had the chance that the baby would survive, that her and Jade would raise their child and watch it grow. On the other hand there was a chance that the baby wouldn't survive and Tori would be left with a hole in her heart at a life that she was a part of, in the sense that it was part of her, was taken so quickly. But as she thought of the bad things that could come, she also saw a the possibility of good things. She saw her and Jade at the park with their child, saw the three of them at Christmas with their child opening presents, and she saw Jade reading stories to their child as she tried to get her to go to sleep. Her heart swelled at the thought and she could feel herself smile, something that Jade took note of, and she looked up at the thespian before nodding her head.
"Yeah, you're right Jade," she stated as she sat up, "the risk would be worth it."
"So?"
"Alright let's go get Dr. Hart and tell her that we're interested in being considered," Tori said as the two of them stood up and left the room.
Finding Dr. Hart wasn't hard, the two girls finding her just down the hallway talking to one of the nurses when she noticed that they were there. With a smile the three then made their way back to her office and she took her seat again as they sat down on the couch again.
"I'm really sorry about that," Tori apologized as she blushed, Megan merely shaking her head.
"Think nothing of it Tori," Megan told her with a sympathetic smile, "I know that hearing a child might not survive is hard for anyone to take in, but I take it that since you called me back in that you have come to a decision?"
The two girls looked at each other and Tori gave Jade a nod before the West girl looked back at Dr. Hart.
"Yeah, we would like to be considered for the experiment," she replied as Megan nodded.
"Now I do have one concern about the two of you," Megan told them as she looked at their files again, "and that's just because the two of you are still in high school."
"Yeah that's why we were asking for the scholarship," Jade pointed out.
"That's not going to be too big of a problem is it?" Tori asked frowning, not liking the idea that they may have just came there for no reason.
"It shouldn't if you feel that it won't, but due to the time of year, if you were take take part in the experiment then you'd be giving birth not too long before your graduation," Dr. Hart explained biting on the tip of her thumb, "but like I said that should only be a problem if you believe it is."
"I don't think it will be a problem," Jade offered, glancing over at Tori, "what about you?"
"I...no I don't think it will be, Hollywood Arts is a very open minded school," Tori agreed, "plus we have our friends that will back us up if anything gets too out of hand."
"If they do I always have my scissors," the thespian reminded her with an almost evil smile.
"We'll keep that on the back burner for now," the singer groaned shaking her head.
"We'll alright then, I should have my decision by the end of next week," Dr. Hart told them, concerned about the whole scissors comment but choosing not to say anything, "for now I want to thank you two for considering taking part in this experiment."
"It's not a problem, in all honesty this seems like an interesting experiment," Jade commented with hey signature smirk.
"Though I am interested as to why you want to do this experiment Dr. Hart," Tori wondered, Megan merely smiling in response.
"That might be a story for another time Miss. Vega," she replied as she stood up, "for now I'm done with my interviews and need to head back to the other part of my work, but I hope to see the two of you again."
Tori and Jade nodded and left the office as Dr. Hart grabbed some of the things she needed or of her desk. As the two waddled down the hallway Tori couldn't help but to keep questioning what Dr. Hart hoped to gain from this experiment. She knew that if the whole thing was successful then a lot of lesbian couples would be able to have children, though that did raise the question about if this was possible then what would happen to the kids in orphanages, but still she was curious.
"So you going to say anything?" Jade teased as she bumped their hips together.
"I was just wondering what she was hoping to accomplish with this experiment on a personal level," Tori replied frowning, "that and what was going to happen all the orphans that might not get adopted because of this."
"I'm sure there are still parents that will adopt Tori, but I understand why you're concerned," the thespian commented as they walked outside and over to her car, "and I'm sure that Dr. Hart would be willing to answer that question if we're chosen."
"Yeah," the half Latina agreed climbing into the car, "so what do we do now?"
"Now, now we head to your place to get ready for our date."
