It had been just over a month since Tori and Jade were chosen to participate in the experiment, as well as attempt conception for their child. It was, as Dr. Hart had told them, a rather easy beginning to the experiment, Jade merely having to have a blood sample taken so they could have a bit of DNA from her. After a couple of hours of waiting they were ready for the next step and it was Tori's turn. That part of the process was a bit embarrassing for the singer but with Jade there to help her out she made it through and had Jade's DNA implanted into her womb. It was then that Dr. Hart told the two that all they had to do for the time was wait until Tori started to show symptoms of pregnancy or enough time had passed that they were certain that she wasn't pregnant. As a month rolled around Tori still hadn't shown any signs of pregnancy, though both their mothers and Dr. Hart told them that she might not start showing symptoms until after the first month.
At the moment Tori was curled up in her bed sleeping when she heard her alarm go off, signalling her to start her day and get ready for school. As she reached around for her pear phone she turned off the alarm and sat up in her bed, stretching out her muscles with a smile and swinging her legs around get out of bed. As her feet hit the floor she noticed the smell of bacon and coffee coming from the downstairs and that's when she could feel her stomach start to churn. Her eyes went wide as her hands flew to her mouth before making a mad dash out of her room and to the bathroom a few door down the hall, all but throwing Trina out the door and slamming it in her face before she could protest.
"Tori not cool I wasn't done in there!" Trina yelled stomping her feet.
"What's going on up here?" Holly asked walking up the stairs confused, "I heard a door being slammed opened and closed and then here you are shouting."
"Tori just threw me out of the bathroom," Trina complained, "I was trying to get ready for class."
"Trina you don't have class until noon," her mother reminded her, "don't you think it would have been better to let Tori get ready for school before you hulled up in the bathroom?"
"But there's this really cute boy in my class and I want to impress him!"
Holly sighed and shook her head, choosing to ignore her oldest daughter and walked over to the bathroom door. She was just about to knock on the door when she heard the sound of Tori clearly emptying the contents of her stomach and frowned as she tried to recall what Tori had eaten in the last twenty four hours. As far as she knew she hadn't cooked anything that would make Tori throw up and normally it would have kicked in way before this so maybe it was…
'Oh!' Holly thought chuckling to herself before unlocking the bathroom door in a way she had learned from her mother.
Opening the door she saw what she had expected, her youngest daughter doubled over the toilet and clutching on to it like her life depended on it. Walking over to her she kneeled beside her, pulling back her hair and rubbing her back comfortingly as the youngest Vega groaned.
"I know I didn't eat anything to make me do this," she muttered as she flushed the toilet.
"Are you sure?" Holly asked smiling at her.
"Yeah, I just woke up and was about to head downstairs for breakfast, but when I smelt the bacon and coffee I suddenly had to…"
Tori quickly leaned over the toilet again, Holly going back to work to rub her back soothingly as her youngest daughter tried to throw up something that wasn't in her stomach. With a groan Tori leaned back and sat on the floor, taking the hand towel her mother was offering her and wiping off her mouth.
"What's going on with me?" Tori asked, looking at her mother for answers.
"Tori I want you to think really hard about that before I give you an answer," Holly said shaking her head, "you're a smart young woman I'm sure you can figure it out."
Trying to clear some of the fogginess in her mind Tori thought back to what could have possibly made her throw up. She knew that she hadn't eaten anything to make her do this and she didn't feel over sick, just having to throw up, but she couldn't wrap her mind around it. Frowning she was about to ask her mother for the answers when it suddenly hit her, the one reason that she would be doubled over the toilet at the moment.
"Morning sickness?" she asked startled, Holly smiling and nodding.
"It would be about that time for that to start coming around," Holly answered, Tori's eyes going wide with excitement.
"Does that mean…"
"We need to double check with Dr. Hart to make sure it's a definite yes," Holly said placing her hand on Tori's shoulder, "Why don't you call Jade and give her a warning and then call Dr. Hart to set up an appointment."
Her daughter nodded and shakily stood up, using the counter to balance herself. Calling Dr. Hart's office she made the appointment for later that day, and then proceeded to call her girlfriend who was more than likely just now waking up. After a few rings she smiled as she heard Jade pick up, the goth girl grumbling on the other side.
"What?"
"Good morning to you too," Tori replied with a giggle, her excitement making her giddy.
"Tori it's way too early for you to be this bubbly," Jade groaned, "can't this wait until I pick you up for school?"
"I would say yes but I'm not going to school late today," Tori explained, almost hearing the gears in Jade's head turning.
"Are you going to tell me why or are you going to be a tease?" the thespian asked, Tori hearing the sound of a dresser being opened in the background.
"I um...I have an appointment with Dr. Hart at noon."
The following silence was near deafening to the singer, Tori wondering what was going in when she finally heard Jade speak up.
"Are you okay?"
Tori sighed in relief, chuckling as she shook her head at the fact she was worried about what Jade would say.
"Yes I'm fine," Tori promised smiling, "I just had the start of what we believe to be a bit of morning sickness."
"Alright I'll pick you up at eleven thirty and take you to the doctor office," Jade said making Tori's smile grow even more.
"I think my mother is taking me, but if you want to meet us there I might need a ride to school afterwards."
"Kay then, I'll pick up the assignments from your morning classes," Jade promised, "I'll see you at the doctor's office."
"Okay see you there," Tori said before hanging up.
Grabbing some comfortable clothing Tori walked back into the bathroom and quickly took a shower. A couple of hours later she was sitting on the couch watching TV while eating some oatmeal, her mother telling her that she had to eat something, while she waited for the time for them to leave. When eleven thirty rolled around the two got in the car and headed towards Dr. Hart's office, Tori giving direction to her mother, and when they pulled into the parking lot the younger Vega spotted Jade's car already there.
"Jade!" Tori said running over and hugging her.
"Careful now," Jade cautioned as she caught her.
"Oh don't you start that," Tori scolded playfully.
"Hey it's not my fault that you're incredibly clumsy," Jade teased before noticing Holly stepping out of the car, "Mrs. Vega."
"Hello Jade, how are you today?" Holly asked smiling at the goth.
"I'm fine, a little excited and nervous but fine."
"Understandable," Holly replied with a nod, "most fathers feel like that when they think they're about to have a child."
Jade blushed bright red as Tori chuckled at what her mother just insinuated, Jade quickly ushering them inside the doctor's office. It was a quick process of getting checked in and then heading back to Dr. Hart's office, Tori taking a seat on the exam table while Jade stood next to her and Holly took a seat in the nearby chair.
"Alright then Tori," Dr. Hart said walking into the office, "I've heard that you had a bit of morning sickness this morning."
"That's what we're thinking," Tori replied with a nod, "we wanted to double check with you first though."
"And I'm guessing this is your mother?" Dr. Hart asked looking at Holly.
"It's nice to finally meet you Dr. Hart, my name is Holly Vega," Mrs. Vega replied holding out her hand.
Dr. Hart smiled and shook her hand, "It's nice to meet you too Mrs. Vega, now then Tori can you tell me what you've had to eat in the last twenty four hours?"
"Um, breakfast burritos yesterday morning, me and Jade went and got some sushi from Nozu for lunch, last night we had spaghetti and some salad, and this morning after I threw up I had oatmeal," Tori recalled, Dr. Hart writing it down on her clipboard.
"And you've never had any kind of adverse effect to eating these foods before?"
"Not before no, I just woke up this morning and smelt the pancakes and coffee downstairs and then I was running to the bathroom," Tori explained, Jade frowning as she looked at her.
"You threw up because you smelled coffee?"
"That's what you're worried about?" Tori asked rolling her eyes, Dr. Hart and Holly chuckling at the scene.
"Well you are at that point in time where morning sickness could start to kick in," Dr. Hart explained checking her notes, "so I think we're well ready to run a pregnancy test."
Tori nodded and jumped down from the exam table, Dr. Hart handing her a cup and pointing her towards a restroom. As they three women waited for her to comeback to the office Holly decided to take the time to ask a few questions of her own to the younger looking woman.
"Dr. Hart, if I may ask why are you performing this experiment?" Holly asked catching her attention.
"Hm? Oh of course," Megan replied nodding, "I'm attempting this experiment to help out gay couples so they can have their own child,though I suppose there is a personal reason behind it as well."
'Figured there would be,' Jade thought smirking.
"That seems kind of a simple reason to be doing this," Holly pointed out skeptically.
"I suppose it does, but sometimes a complex experiment or project can be started by just a simple reason," Dr. Hart stated as she set down her clipboard and put her hands in her labcoat pockets, "all it takes is just a simple thought to start something big."
"But what about adoption?"
"Of course adoption is always going to be a possibility for those who aren't able to conceive a child on their own, and I'll always suggest it first and foremost," she explained, "but I want to be able to put the options out there for them."
"And what about gay male couples, they wouldn't be able to conceive a child, even with this procedure," Holly pointed out, "you would need an artificial uterus."
"That is true and we may possibly work on that after this experiment is brought to a close and the information made public," Dr. Hart answered with a nod, "but for now I would like to focus on the present."
"Well then can I ask why you'd allow high schoolers to participate in this experiment?" Mrs. Vega questioned, Jade looking over at the older woman.
"Mrs. Vega I thought you were on board with this," Jade said confused.
"I am Jade but I feel as if this is a question that needs to be asked."
"No no, I understand," Megan promised with a smile, "in all honesty I had a hard time bringing myself to allow girls their age to be in the experiment, but those who are funding the experiment wanted a wider age gap."
"A wider age gap?" Jade asked tilting her head to the side.
"Yes, you and Tori are the younger of the three groups, we have you two being Group X, Group Y is in their late twenties, and Group Z is in their late thirties," Megan explained pulling a paper from a file on her clipboard and handing it to the goth, "we wanted to see if age would have an effect on the experiment, and of course I made sure that they were eighteen so they were legally adults, that way we wouldn't get in any legal trouble"
Jade looked over the notes of the experiment, noticing that they were revised with parts of it scratched out and written over, and nodded before handing it back. The door to the office opened and Tori walked inside, the singer smiling as she walked over to her girlfriend and wrapped her arms around one of Jade's.
"I'm guessing everything is ready?" Dr. Hart asked, Tori nodding in response, "alright then I'll be back if a little while with the results, it shouldn't take too long, for now why don't the three of you go and enjoy the hospital cafe."
Walking out of the room Dr. Hart gave them a warm smile and closed the door as the three other women walked out after her. Heading to the cafe, Holly went to order them some food while Tori and Jade went to get a table. Sitting down Tori leaned over and gave Jade a small kiss in the cheek, making the thespian blush but give her a small smile before taking a hold of her hand.
"So what did the three of you talk about while I was doing my thing?" Tori asked curiously.
"Not much, mostly it was your mom trying to get some information about the experiment and why should would chose two girls not even out of high school," Jade replied with a shrug, "she told her that she wanted a wider age group."
"Wider age group?" Tori asked making Jade snort, "what's so funny?"
"I said the same thing, mostly she said that we're the youngest group while the oldest group is close to twenty years older than us and the other group is ten years older than us," Jade explained recalling what Megan told them, "guess that's a wide age gap."
"I suppose, but why did she chose us even though we're not out of high school?" Tori asked with a nod.
"We were eighteen, legally adults and able to make our own decisions," Jade replied, "other than that I'm not quite sure why she chose us."
"Oh I think I can answer that," Dr. Hart said walking up to them.
"Dr. Hart! Are the results already back?" Tori asked in shock as Dr. Hart sat down.
"Oh no, we still have maybe a good ten minutes to make sure that a majority of the test say the same thing," She answered with a dismissive wave of her hand.
"Oh…" the singer said frowning.
"Sorry, she really wants to know if she's pregnant," Jade said elbowing her in the side.
"I understand, but to answer your question as to why I chose you in particular, it's not because the two of you are eighteen, I could have easily shifted my ages, it's because I enjoyed talking to the two of you in our first meeting, that and you two were really the only ones who were interested in the experiment itself other than just the end product," Dr. Hart explained with a smile.
"We...we are?" Tori asked in shock.
"Tori did you know that, over the past month, I have exchanged close to fifty emails over the experiment?" Dr. Hart asked making Jade choke on the coffee she was drink.
"No I didn't know that," Tori replied looking over at Jade curiously, "what about the experiment was she emailing you about?"
"Everything she could think of really, from what she would have to do after you found out you were pregnant, all the way to what would happen to your child after she is born," Dr. Hart explained noticing the blush growing on Jade's face, "she said that she wanted to be prepared for when she was born."
"Is that so?" Tori asked smiling at Jade, "thank you for telling us Dr. Hart, but I do have one more question."
"Oh and what is that?" Dr. Hart asked sitting up in her chair, Holly sitting down between her and Tori.
"Oh Dr. Hart is the results back already?" Holly asked giving the girls their food.
"It should be about done, the three of us were just talking," Megan said with a smile before returning her attention back to Tori, "now then your question Tori."
"You said she a couple of times when you were talking about mine and Jade's possible child, why she?"
"Basic biology Tori," Dr. Hart answered, picking up a few of Tori's fries and snapping one in half before forming two sets of double Xs and a set of XY, "I'm hoping that with you two being seniors in high school that you would know that a girl has the XX chromosomes while the male has the XY chromosome."
"Of course we know that," Jade huffed, slightly annoyed that they were getting a biology lesson, "what's the point of this lesson here?"
"Well typical when a baby is conceived the mother passes one of her X chromosomes and the father will either pass the X or the Y determining the child's gender," Megan continued as she moved some or the fries to show the process of the chromosomes moving, "but since this is an experiment between two females there's no Y chromosome to make a male."
"Oh because the two of us can only give an X chromosome…" Tori muttered looking at the fries.
"The only possible outcome is a female child," Dr. Hart confirmed, "I'm guessing that answers your question?"
"Yes thank you," Tori replied smiling.
"So I guess we'll have to think of some girl names," Jade pointed out taking one of the fries and eating it.
"Guess so," Tori confirmed with a nod.
Holly smiled at how calmly the two seemed to be taking the news about the possibility of a future daughter, honestly she was excited to have a granddaughter. Even if Tori and Jade couldn't have a son they could always adopt, and Trina would have the possibility to have a son so a grandson wasn't totally out of the question. Just as Holly was about to say something to the girls about thinking carefully on a name she noticed that there was a younger woman walking up to them holding a manila folder.
"Dr. Hart the results for...oh for these two are here," she said holding out the folder to her.
"Thank you Amber," she said taking the item from her, "Tori, Jade, Holly this is one of the hospitals interns Amber."
"Hi Amber," Tori said waving to her.
"S'up," Jade greeted in differently.
"Now then let's take a look at the results shall we," Dr. Hart offered opening the folder and scanning over the papers.
Tori reached over and took a hold of Jade's hand, Jade giving it a small squeeze to reassure her. The goth knew that Tori was excited about possibly being a mother and she herself was kind of hoping for the best. But she also knew that there was a possibility that it didn't work and that they might have to try again. However her worries soon subsided as she saw Dr. Hart look up at them with a smile and slide the folder over to them, the two looking at the papers and at each other before grinning.
"Congratulations girls it looks like you'll be having a baby in about eight months."
