Chapter 14

I cowered below the beast before me. What was this thing? I think it was called a Monstrous Nightmare… and it certainly was just that. My eyes widened at the creature, this was no Toothless. Although according to legend Night Fury's were the most vicious dragons in existence, so if I can tame a Night Fury then I can tame anything, right!?

I then stood up straight to stand my ground. The dragon needed to know that I did not fear him. I took even breathes and reached my hand out to the creature. I slowly began t rest my fingers between his nostrils and he snorted onto my hand.

Little did I know, the scientist who had just made the announcement of my battle smirked evilly. He then told his one his men to bang the gong loudly, "He did it!"

The dragon was startled with a snap. He growled at me and reared back. I darted away as quickly as I could while hearing the horror in the voices of the arena. I barely avoided a few of the blasts the dragon shot in my direction.

"Harold!" My father's voice bellowed as the dragon fired at me once more. My father stormed down the stairs and jumped over railing. He raced towards me and pushed me towards the exit. Suddenly the glass at the top of the arena burst into pieces.

"Toothless!" I cried as my Night Fury pounced on the other dragon. I then noticed Astrid bouncing off of his back and sped towards me. She grabbed my hand, "We have to get out of here!"

"I can't leave Toothless!"

"I know that! He's our ride out here, we just need to-"

My father interrupted her, "What the hell are you two talking about!? What is that other- oh my God! It's a Night Fury!""

Armed men raced into the arena and I immediately fell into a panic. I grabbed Astrid's hand and we raced towards Toothless. He leapt off the other dragon when he saw us approaching. We climbed upon my dragon's back and he spread his wings. We didn't move fast enough because the next thing we saw was the fire-proof net covering all three of us. I gazed up at my father through the net fibers, and he merely turned his head in shame.

I lay on the bed inside my cell in a crumpled heap. I rest my arms across my face as I wallowed in my own self-pity and despair. I lost my best friend and who knows what those mad scientists were doing to him.

Tink! Tink! Tink!

I glanced up and spun my head to see Astrid hitting on the bars of her cell across from me. She smiled sadly and gave a sigh, "Now I know what zoo animals feel like."

"At least they have some of their natural habitat. And a feeding schedule." I replied dryly.

"You must feel pretty awful right now… you've lost your father, your best friend, and you're stuck in a prison." She retorted to my tone.

I rolled my eyes, "Thank you for summing that up…"

The blonde shifted closer to the cell bars, "You're not giving up, are you? That's not the Harold I know."

"I'm not Harold. I'm just little, useless Hiccup. Did you know that's what Vikings called the runt of the litter? I learned that when studying the dragons." My monotone voice was even starting to make me uncomfortable.

"You're not useless, Hiccup. You are so brave! I mean who else is crazy enough to approach a mythological creature like it's nothing?" She chimed.

"Why couldn't I have run away when I had the chance? It would've been better for everyone…" I grumbled to myself.

Astrid ran her fingers along the bars, "Yeah, a majority of people would have done that… so why didn't you?" She paused before boring her eyes into mine, "Why didn't you?"

I returned her intense gaze before glancing away with a shrug, "I don't know… I couldn't…"

"That's not answer."

I shot my head to face her, "Why is this so important to you all of the sudden!?"

Her glare hardened, "Because I want to remember what you say right now."

I groaned in irritation and rose from the bed, "Oh for the love of- I was curious! I saw he was injured and I wouldn't just leave him there!"

"You said wouldn't that time."

I threw my arms into the air with exasperation, "Because I wouldn't! I wouldn't leave an animal, or any living being for that matter, out there to die or suffer. Mythological or not!"

Astrid smiled lightly at me and cocked a brow, "So…?"

"So… I wouldn't leave him because he looked as frightened as I was. I looked at him… and I saw myself. The hunted outcast that was the one that everyone picked on, or in his case the one that everyone wanted to capture." I explained.

Her eyes widened at me before she leaned against the wall and gazed at the ceiling, "He's probably really frightened now. What are you gonna do about it?"

I shrugged at her with a goofy grin, "Eh, probably something stupid."

She nodded at me, "Good, but you've already done that."

I glanced around the cell until something stuck out to me: a vent. I leaned my head out of the bars to see that there was another vent exit right beside Astrid's cell. These guys are dumbasses. I lifted a sly brow at her with a smirk, "Then something crazy." I waggled my finger towards the vent.

Astrid jumped up bouncing on her toes with a beam, "That's more like it!"

"Well, well, well… I'm not exactly sure as to what I'm going to do with you…" The scientist chimed snidely as he eyed Toothless.

The dragon hissed and aggressively reared his teeth. The man merely chuckled, "Silly Night Fury, there's nothing you can do to hurt me from there. Those cages cancel out any fire you blast at me."

Toothless chewed at the bars with no success before growling at the man once more. He bent down to face the dragon in the much-too-small prison. He grinned, "We're going to run plenty of test on you, devil."

Just then my father barged into the room, "Um, sir, I'd like to ask a question."

The evil man hissed and frowned, "What is it Stoic?"

"It's about my son, what do you plan on doing with him?" He asked.

The scientist chuckled, "That's not information I can share with you, I'm afraid."

"Tell me Alvin! Are you going to kill my son and his friend? That's not morally right!" He spit.

He smirked at my father, "They know too much. You know what happens in these types of situations."

My father reared away in distress, "I should have listened to Harold. You are monsters."

"Don't change your mind or else you'll join them…"

I banged open the vent with the leg of a rusty stool that had been in my cell. I could feel the rage swelling and boiling in my stomach. If they were going to hurt Toothless… they were going to have to go through me.
