Chapter 31: Live and Let Die

"GAARA!" Kagome screamed hysterically, pushing her way through the herds of shinobi standing between her and her fiancé.

Finally breaking through, she came to a sudden halt. There was her red-headed lover, lying motionless in the arms of Naruto. The usually hyperactive blond silently shedding tears as Chio-baa-san was whispering something to him sullenly.

Kagome forced her feet to move, getting closer and closer before collapsing at Gaara's head. His hair was as red as ever, his skin slightly more pale, but his expression looked so peaceful.

'How?' Kagome though angrily, 'How can you look so peaceful after you've torn my heart out?'

Kagome held his head in her lap as tears glided down her cheeks, landing on Gaara's own softly. The others around her were talking, but she wasn't paying attention.

'No. I won't let you do this to me.' Her grip on his shoulders tightened. 'I won't be the one left behind again.'

A soft purple glow started emanating from her fingertips, slowly climbing up her arms until it encompassed her completely.

"No Kagome! You mustn't!" Chio-baa-san's shouts went unheard by Kagome as the glow brightened.

"What's happening?!" Naruto yelled as he shielded his eyes from the blinding light coming from his friend.

As suddenly as it started, the light went out completely.

Bringing his arms down, Naruto looked at his friend. She hadn't moved, apart from the smile now spread across her face. Confused, Naruto looked down to see teal eyes staring into blue.

"Gaara?" Naruto whispered carefully. Gaara turned his gaze from his fiancé's smiling face to the shock expression of his best friend.

"When did you get here Naruto?" He questioned. "What's going on?"

Before Naruto could respond, Kagome fell backwards, motionless. Gaara quickly sat up and hurried to her side, pulling her up into his lap.

"Kagome!" He shouted. 'What's going on?'

"I'm sorry Gaara." Chio-baa-san started solemnly, "She's gone."

Gaara's eyes widened. "No. How?!" He yelled.

"She gave her life for yours." Chio-baa-san replied sadly. "She couldn't stand to live in a world without you."

'No.' Gaara dismayed. 'No!'

"NO!"

Naruto could do nothing but watch as his friend grieved for his love. If only he had been stronger, none of this would've happened.

"Do not despair child." Chio-baa-san said as she laid her hand on Gaara's shoulder. "All shall be well. Lay her down and stand back."

Kagome groaned as she woke, arching her back as she stretched before laying back down. 'It feels like I was hit by a bijuu.'

Kagome closed her eyes, almost falling back to sleep, before sitting up with a start. Looking around, she found that she was in her bed, the bed she shared with Gaara.

'Wait! If I'm alive, then that means . . .'

She threw the covers off of her and swung her legs out of bed. She moved to stand, but cried out as she collapsed to the ground. Frustrated and distraught, Kagome just stayed there sobbing.

Suddenly the door burst open and she was encompassed by someone's arms. Kagome pushed against them, but they held her tight. 'No. The only one I want to hold me is Gaara.'

"Kagome."

Shocked, Kagome stopped trying to push the person away, her tears still clouding her eyes, but not flowing down her face.

"Kagome." They said again, softer this time.

Kagome gently pulled back to look at the person before her. She gasped wide eyed.

"It worked." Kagome whispered in shock, placing her hands on Gaara's cheeks. "It really worked." The tears began to cascade down her face once more. "But how? I'm still alive."

Kagome's eyes widened as her hands were snatched roughly by Gaara's larger ones. She look into his angry face, confused.

"Yes, you're alive." He stated harshly. "No thanks to yourself." He dropped her hands and sat on the bed.

Hurt and confused, Kagome only looked up at him.

He sighed, "Chio-san is dead."

Kagome's eyes widened. "What? How?"

"The same way you died."

Kagome was confused for a while before realisation hit her. "She brought me back."

Gaara nodded gently. Kagome's crying increased. 'Oh Chio-baa, why would you do that.'

"Why Kagome?" Kagome turned her watery eyes to him, confused. "Why would you give your life for mine?"

She looked deep into his eyes. "Because I couldn't live without you."

"And you believed I could live without you?!" Gaara yelled. He ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "How many times do I have to explain how much you mean to me?"

Kagome sat beside him, turning his face towards hers. "At least once more, my love."

He sighed before grabbing her by the back of her neck, and bringing her in for a passionate, hungry kiss.

Kagome returned it desperately, giving in as he pushed her back, deepening the kiss.

'Thank you, Chio-baa-san.'

A/N: I know, I know, it's been like 500 years since I updated! I'm so, so, soooooo sorry! I started a new job working overnights and studying full-time at university! So I've had a lot on my plate. Still, I'm sorry that it's been so long since I updated last.
