Chapter 1
They got a lotta girls who know they got it going on but nothing's ever a comparison to you now can't you see that you're the only one I really want and everything I need is everything you do? Any girl walk by, don't matter 'cause your looking so much better don't ever need to get caught up in jealousy she could be a super-model every magazine cover she'll never, ever mean a thing to me. The song played through the casino's sound system. I started singing to myself as I walked around wiping the bar down as more people walked up. It always amazed me that there were so many people around this place at 6 am, but then again it was the Vegas Strip. There's always a crowd.
"What can I get ya?" I asked when the group reached me, as I took my hand away from the rag.
"I'll take a four bud lights, a Cosmo, a blue Hawaiian, and two apple martinis."
"Comin' right up," I said, grabbing the rag and tossing it behind me before getting the ingredients out to make the mixed drinks. We exchanged some small talk as I made the drinks. Once I finished I put all the drinks he ordered in front of him, "Alright, that'll be $32.46."
The guy set two twenties down on the table, "Keep the tip," the guy said as he grabbed the drinks and started walking over to his group of friends. I put the money in the register then put the dirty dishes in the sink and started washing them. My replacement showed up shortly after I finished cleaning the dishes so I grabbed my purse and smiled at her as I started on my usual mile walk to my car. It really wasn't a mile – just three blocks – but somehow it felt like a mile.
Once I reached my dark green Chevy Silverado I made the ten minute drive to my apartment. I sighed before getting out of the truck and walking up the flight of stairs to my condo. Another day another hundred and fifty bucks. I unlocked the front door to see my two year old pit bull, Angel, waiting happily by the front door for me. "Hey, pretty girl." I said as I reached down to pet her and hug her before going into the kitchen. I set my purse down on the counter and fed Angel before jumping in the shower. Since I didn't have to work again that night, I decided to wear a pair of cut offs and an off-one-shoulder dark purple shirt with a three chained black necklace. I grabbed my purse and walked out the door, opting for a morning out instead of moping around the house. I went to McDonald's and got some breakfast before heading off to the mall. The first place I went to was Vanity. I found two pairs of jeans I really liked, one being a really dark wash while the other was a light blue color that had a faded white wash from the thigh to the knee. After, I went browsing through Shoe Department for some sandals and flats. That was when my whole life was changed forever. I was standing by the door, looking through the glass to look at the shoes they had on display when some local radio announcer started talking about some promotional prize giveaway they were doing, "Okay who can answer the question: How did the paranormal device called a Mel Meter got its name? The first person to answer correctly wins so you better hurry and call now!"
I looked up at him and answered the question more to myself than to him, "Melissa Galka."
"Who said that?" the guy asked, looking around in my general direction.
"I did." I confirmed, blushing.
"Could you come over here for a moment miss?" He asked, waving me over to his booth. I reluctantly walked over to him. "Now could you tell us your answer?"
"I said that the Mel Meter was named after Melissa Galka, the daughter of the inventor of the device, who died in a tragic accident."
"And there you have it ladies and gentlemen. The question that no one could answer all day yesterday, answered correctly within the first ten minutes. What is your name?"
"Sarah."
"Well Sarah, how would you like to go on a three day, two night all expenses paid trip to Boston, Massachusetts to meet the infamous Ghost Adventures Crew and investigate with them?!"
