No Quarter

SPN 100 challenge, word: faint.

Set in Season 3. 200 words on the dot.

Summary: When your life changes, you tend to conceive many things in new and unexpected ways…

The black was filled with flickering lights and colors. He could feel them, all those souls moving around him, in tune with him, as if he were still part of them. Each note reverberated in his heart, the mourning cries cutting through flesh and bone, until he could no longer bear it, couldn't bear the familiar words that held a deeper meaning now, and he let himself be carried into the darkness, seeking comfort in the void.

"Dean? What the hell?!"

"…?"

"Dude, you fainted on me."

"Nevrfaint."

"There's a first for everything."

"Whappn'd?

"You must've cracked your head worse than I thought. How many fingers…"

"Gimme a break. Where are we?"

"The very last of your last wishes? The Once-in-a-lifetime concert? Led Zeppelin back on stage? Come on, you gotta…"

"I…"

It was back in a flash. The incredulous joy when he'd heard it. One last concert. The soundtrack of his life. Singing him to sleep when Dad steered them through the night. Keeping him company when he was alone. Raising his spirits when he was bawling along, trying to forget the ones he couldn't save.

But he'd saved this one.

"Come one Sammy. Let's get Baby and go."

A/N: Huh – it feels strange to be back after such a long time. Strange, but good. When I thought about the things that could make Dean faint, I had that idea of Dean and Sam on the legendary Led Zeppelin concert in 2007. And it was supposed to be lighthearted, Sam making fun of Dean fainting in the presence of his musical heroes. As it happens, 2007 is the year of Dean's deal – which gave my drabble a much darker undercurrent. One of the iconic songs of Led Zeppelin is No Quarter – and it seems to be written just for the Winchesters, don't you think?

No Quarter – Led Zeppelin

Close the door, put out the light
No, they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold

They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through, oh
They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter
They hold no quarter, oh

Walking side-by-side with death
The devil mocks their every step, ooh
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling more

They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you, oh, oh, oh

They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter

They hold no quarter
They ask no quarter
Yeah
Without quarter, quarter, yeah (without quarter)
Without quarter, quarter, quarter
Taking no quarter
Oh, oh, oh (hear the dogs of doom) (no, never quarter)
I hear the dogs of doom are howling more
