VI - The conditions for death will not be realized unless it is physically possible for that human or it is reasonably assumed to be carried out by that human.

1998 – Wammy's House

February seventeenth, it was supposed to be another normal day of studying and testing, but that morning had left the whole of the orphanage feeling broken and uncertain. On this particular morning, Christopher Allen "A" was found dead in his room during the early bed checks. The cause of death was ruled as a suicide and the ambulance had packed his body up into a body bag and onto a gurney before wheeling him out of the room.

The opinions of "why" he did it far outnumbered the opinions of those who wished he hadn't. Taking the opportunity to indulge in lessons of autopsy's and forensics when given the chance, the fact that someone had died didn't seem to be what everyone was choosing to acknowledge.

Beyond sat outside the orphanage, sitting with his back to the building nest to the entrance. His eyes following the taillights of the ambulance as it pulled out of the driveway and took a right onto the main road before vanishing from his sight. "Suicide huh..." he scoffed in annoyance, "boring till the end, Christopher." Soft footfalls sounded from inside the foyer of the orphanage, the front door was wide open so he could hear the steps clearly as they grew closer.

"I don't get it."

"What is confusing you, Mihael?"

"First off, don't you think you're being a bit too careless? Not even looking behind you, how would you know if I was alone? Tch...just saying my name...so cocky."

"You wouldn't have come to talk to me if you were with someone, Mihael. You aren't stupid, and neither am I." Beyond glanced back over his shoulder and smiled lightly at the blonde, "on another note, all of the good little orphans of Wammy's House are on lock down and should be in their room. With the exception of L and myself. L because he's currently in a meeting with Roger and Watari, myself because I was instructed to take care to see the EMS out of the building and lock up once they were gone. So my little delinquent, do you still think I'm being careless?"

Mello scoffed, but he said nothing in retaliation. Instead, he chose to answer Beyonds earlier question to his first comment. "How did you know A was going to die? You told me the exact countdown, and I wholeheartedly believed you were making it up, so confidently that I put the countdown on my phone according to the numbers you'd given me. Month, days and hours...just as you had called it."

Beyond nodded his head as he listened to Mello. However, the boy clearly had more to say, so he remained quiet and let him continue.

"When my watch went off this morning, I thought nothing of it, I laughed even, thinking it was silly to even toy with the idea. Then...the commotion in the halls lit up, and there was yelling, and crying...kids screaming for Roger, people looking for L and you, and then...there was A. I hadn't wanted to believe it, but when I ran to his room, there he was, dangling from the ceiling fan...he was dead." Mello took a deep breath, trying to calm his nerves at the recollection of that very morning. "BB, can you really see how long someone has left to live?"

Beyond looked back towards the gate and stood up, stretching, he nodded his head towards the gate, indicating that Mello follow him. "When I was your age, I watched my mothers numbers quickly dwindle. Her time ran out right in front of my eyes, and at that time, I had never known the reason for the numbers I could see. I had only been told not to talk about it to anyone except her. She told me that day, that she would die when her time ran out, and I refused to leave her, no matter how many times she told me to, I stayed, and I watched as a man shot her down on her last ten seconds. Originally, I'd never told anyone, and even when I came here, I kept my mouth shut...for the most part. You are the only one who knows this much, Mello."

Mello frowned, "why did you choose to tell me?"

Shrugging, Beyond manually closed the large gate before placing the heavy chain around the gate and the fence and locking it with the large padlock. "maybe because, in you I see...a little bit of me..." He looked up and saw L standing at the doorway and watching them as they closed up the entrance, he knew he couldn't hear them. "Not even L knows what I've told you, Mello. So keep this to yourself."

"Right, I understand."

Beyond nodded as they made their way back up the steps, "perhaps you should return back to your room, Mello."

Mello glanced up at the annoyed look on L's face, though he knew it wasn't because of him being out of his room, clearly something had happened that bothered the number one in the Orphanage. "Got it, see you later, BB."

L watched in silence before sighing and leaning his back against the frame of the opened door, "what's with all the secrecy, Beyond."

Beyond smiled, L had recently started to acknowledge his name when they were alone together, not simply in the tangles of pleasure. "Are you so jealous that Mello comes to talk to me more than he does you?"

A deadpanned expression graced L's face and Beyond laughed, "you know that's not what I'm talking about."

"Oh?"

"This morning, when you woke up, you said that A's time was up."

"Ah...how annoying, you were awake?"

"...naturally, I woke up when you started playing with my hair."

Beyond stepped forward and leaned in closer to L, "you like when I run my fingers through your hair though, your body responds actively when I do."

L blushed, "Don't change the subject."

Beyond playfully nipped at L's neck, "I'd really much rather change the subject though, this one's much more enjoyable for the both of us, don't you agree?" His fingers trailed along L's arm and the slightly younger of the two gasped at the slight sting of pain on his neck.

"Beyond, seriously, talk to me."

"If I tell you, then that would mean two people know my precious secret, I'm not sure how I feel about that. You aren't exactly known for hiding things that seem unnatural..."

L stared owlishly at him, "is it unnatural?"

"I think so, yes." Beyond finally stepped away from L and leaned against the other part of the door frame. "...I honestly don't want to tell you, L...but I'm sure, in time, you will figure it out anyways...so..."

"So...?" L moved closer, curious about what Beyond would say. He watched as Beyond also pushed away from the frame and leaned in so that his lips grazed gently against his ear.

"I can see everyone's lifespan..." he whispered in L's ear and left with a cool chuckle as the teen stared wondrously ahead at where Beyond was standing only seconds ago.

'...lifespans?! What? Damn, Beyond...he's always joking about stupid things! But...still...if he could see a persons lifespan, that would make since why he said it A's time was up this morning...it's still too far-fetched for my tastes though.' L shook his head and shut the door to Wammy's, heading to his room to finish the stack of cases he'd been given yesterday.

"What a day..."

Mello glanced over at the boy with auburn reddish brown hair, green eyes were hidden behind orange tinted goggles that were always covering his eyes. His name was Matt, as far the orphans were concerned, but to him and...of course Beyond, he was Mail, although, Mello still called him Matt. Like Beyond, L and himself, Matt was also a maybe for the next L, however, like Mello, they were part of the second generation running for the next L, as L himself had already been chosen as L, and if anything happens to him, it would be Beyond who'd take his place. The fact that A was dead now had placed Mello in third place, second if he didn't count L. Not that Matt cared about any of that, he was about as unmotivated as they came. Mello glanced back to the book he'd been reading, lying on his bed while waiting for lock down to end. "You are referring to A's suicide?" He asked.

"Nope, my game froze last night and I had to start it over this morning after I had just made it to the final boss. Ah...but yeah, I guess it sucks about A's death too." Matt hadn't even bothered looking up from his game when he'd said all that.

"You couldn't care less, could you."

"Hm...sounds like a statement to me, you should know my answer. Oh, we have another orphan joining us today too. You remember how pissed you were that we were the same age and I wasn't a year younger than you like you'd been led to believe by the other orphans?"

Mello glared irritably at the book, "yeah, what of it?"

"This kid is apparently six years old, and my information isn't wrong. Roger was complaining about the fact that he was coming today of all days," Matt paused and saved the game before popping it out and replacing it with another one, "you know, with A choosing to off himself and all."

"I wouldn't have thought that you cared for new arrivals."

Matt shrugged, "I don't," he glanced up over his handheld game console and his eyes met Mello's from behind his orange tinted lenses, "you do though." With that Matt returned to his game.

"Did you happen on any other information in regards to the new comer?"

"...not much else." He quickly pressed the buttons on the handheld as he maneuvered his character through the game map, "like I said, he's six years old, he's albino, hails from France, speaks English, French and Japanese fluently...starting the second he arrives here he'll go by the name Near, oh, and he's really smart...or so the story goes."

Mello stared with wide eyes at Matt, his idea of "nothing much" baffled him. "You really don't care?"

"Nope."

'...right...well, if that's him when he's not interested, maybe it's a good thing that he doesn't care to be the next L. He'd push me out of the running to be the next L completely...' Mello watched Matt for a while longer before shaking his head. 'Like that would ever happen. Now that A is gone, I'm second only to Beyond, I won't let anyone surpass me!'
