Chapter 40: A Wave Goodbye

The dawn was grey and dull as the tiny raft bobbed along amidst the wreckage of half sunken metal ships and large icebergs. Upon it, two people stood, one fixing the makeshift red sail the other staring out blankly at the watery barrier between them and the half broken great wall of ice that was slowly shrinking into the distance.

"I am surprised at you Prince Zuko. Surprised you are not at this moment trying to capture the Avatar" Lord Iroh quirked a tired brow to his nephew who sighed with exhaustion as he dropped to sit down.

"I'm tired"

"Then you should rest" his uncle put a gentle warm hand on his shoulder "a man needs his rest"

Zuko briefly leaned into the familiar touch, remembering faintly how it almost always used to sooth him as a child. But even as he shut his eyes and lay down, his hand clenched tightly over the bright green pendant wedged firmly in his palm.

It was going to take a lot more than just sleep to recover from this injury that was for certain.

"It's an ancient creed, from an old society dedicated to the sharing of beauty, philosophy and knowledge across national and political divides. A society to which both your mother and your father belonged, and to which you and your brother now belong to as well. A Society called the Order of the White Lotus."

Jade blinked.

"I'm sorry. But the Order of the what?"

Master Paku of the Water Tribe rolled his eyes.

"The Order of the White Lotus. It is an ancient secret society started many centuries ago by various scholars, philosophers and leaders from all four nations. Legend tells that the group was first formed in the great Library of Wong Shi Tong"

"The Spirit of Knowledge?"

"Yes" Paku nodded, only to quirk a brow "I see you know your spirits"

"My…my parents taught both Shen and I when we were younger." Jade gulped, feeling the horrible lump in her throat as she thought of her mother and father. "Though I will admit I didn't think much of their existence till the Avatar returned."

"You wouldn't be the first" Paku stroked his beard gravely "The world has lost touch with itself during the Avatar's absence. But if the events of last night are any indication, then it won't be long till people start remembering what's important"

"I agree. This war has gone on long enough" Jade agreed, straightening up where she sat. "So what does the Order of the White Lotus have to do with the war?"

"That depends on how you look at the war" Paku shrugged "Despite the ongoing conflict, the order still has many members across the remaining three nations, including the Fire Nation. Your friend Lord Iroh in fact is a Grand Lotus for the Fire Nation, like your father it would seem, just as I am the Grand Lotus for the Northern Water Tribe."

"And the Earth Kingdom?"

"The, ever crazy, King Bumi of Omashu and,"- Paku grunted in resignation, as if the mere thought of the man grated on his nerves, but quickly composed himself with a cough.

"And?" Jade bit her lip as the old Water Bender sighed.

"And your mother. Lien Yutu. Or I guess Lien Shi or whatever you and your brother call her."

Jade stared at the old water bender in amazement.

"My mom…was part of this secret society?"

"That's what I just said" Paku clipped waspishly as Jade slumped in her spot.

No, she just couldn't believe this. This was absurd. It was one thing to hear about a secret society, but to hear her mother and father had been part of it-

Her thoughts were interrupted by Paku's next words.

"As I was saying. Your parents were prominent members alongside myself and Lord Iroh, who has kindly burdened me with the task of delivering this to you given that he and that headstrong nephew of his had to flee before they were caught."

Jade looked down to the table just as Paku drew out from his robes a long cylindrical tube, which she recognized at once to be a Fire Nation's messenger carrier.

She took it gingerly, fingers trembling as she unscrewed the lid and slid out two thin scrolls. She tried to sort them out, but quickly stopped when she saw that they were labelled on the back in black ink.

Jade Shi and Shen Shi

One for her and one for my dear brother then.

Jade gulped as she unfurled her scroll which had something round and flat stuck in the middle. It looked like a coin but she couldn't quite tell.

Whatever I'll check it out when I get that far

She shook out her head and began to read.

Dear Jade.

If you are reading this then it means that I am no longer with you, and either Zhao's plan has succeeded or that I simply have not lived to see his defeat. In an event such as this I have tasked Lord Iroh with delivering this message which will hopefully lend you some guidance and comfort as you enter the next stages of your life. If he has succeeded to do so, then you should also know by now of the Order of the White Lotus, of which your mother and I were members, positions we now pass on to you and your brother, for your protection.

I am so proud of the strong wonderful people you and your brother have both become. When your mother died I was so scared that I'd never be able to raise the two of you on my own. Your mother was my rock through hard times and a person I always admired. Like the hog-monkey reaching for the moon, I tried to reach the potential she said she saw in me. Now I realize that my true happiness is seeing you reach your own heights, even if it is to be without me by your side.

You are a strong woman Jade, in body and in mind. Whilst you are a lot like your mother, in many ways I see a lot of the stubborn spirited youth I was, in you. But unlike the past I was determined not to let people like my father and Zhao squash your spirit down as they had tried to do mine. Which is why I never even once tried to stop you following the Avatar.

"Wait what?" Jade breathed in astonishment.

I knew that from the instant our crew found him that you would want to help him. Of all the people on that ship you were one of the few who ever questioned why we had to fight this war. You looked at our enemies and saw the people they were, not targets to attack or cannon fodder. You said once yourself that the Fire Lord was a monster for sanctioning the attack on the innocent and you were right, he is.

But he wasn't always one.

You see, I knew Fire Lord Ozai when he was a boy, for back then I was close friends with his older brother Iroh, who was then the crown prince. Ozai wasn't evil back then, but the signs of his madness were there and nobody, not even I could read them till it was too late. It was a madness brought on by the stains of pride, vanity and entitlement left behind by his forefathers who began and continued this pointless war, and it is only by ending this war that the Fire Nation might stand a chance of regaining its honour before it is too late.

There are few people with the power to change the world. The Avatar of course is one of them, but one doesn't have to be the most powerful being on earth to bring about change. You are one of those people. I've known it in my bones since the day you were born, that you would change the world.

For you are the daughter of Earth and Fire, a new generation of bender and the new Lucky Jade. And as the new Lucky Jade I leave to you your birthright.

Jade's eyes widened as she unfurled the scroll further, and the small object that she'd looked at earlier.

It wasn't a coin at all. It was a thin pai sho tile. But it wasn't just any pai sho tile, this one was made of green jade with a lotus in the centre made from white jade. In the top, it was secured to a thin but very strong black braided cord with a small metal clasp that held it in a loop.

Jade looked back to the scroll in her free hand eagerly, eyes darting back and forth between the pendant and the paper as she continued to read.

This was your mother's. She wore it often when she was the Lucky Jade. The lucky pendant your she left you when she died was her favourite necklace when she was a child, but this is an heirloom of her parent's clan, the Yutu's. They are a great mighty clan, with many a strong Earth Bender, the strongest being your grandmother Luli Yutu.

She lives still in the Shan mountains, helping to protect the people while they evacuate through the secret tunnels under the mountain pass along with other members of the Order of the White Lotus. If you wish to master your element you must go to her. She is stricter than I in her teachings yet she is also very wise and knowledgeable of the bending arts and the spirits. But if you work hard and never give up she will help transform you into the master you were born to be.

The road will be tough getting to her, even with the Avatar's help. There are many dangers in the world and not all of them come from the Fire Nation.

Worst of all beware, of the Dragon, the Snake and the Horse. They belong to no nation and are forces not to be trifled with.

I'm afraid I can't say much more. Time grows short, and I must meet Zhao for a war meeting before the night is up.

It fills me with pride to know that what happens in this life that you and your brother will look out for one another, with kindness, compassion and bravery as you always have.

And one more thing my little Lucky, know that no matter what happens your mother, brother and I always love you and if you remember that you will always have your family and you will always be home no matter how far you wander.

Your loving father,

Ruishi Shi

There was a silence as Jade finished reading the letter.

Paku watched her, his usually stern expression softening with sympathy ever so slightly as he saw the tears stream down the girl's shut eyelids. But to her credit she held her sobs back and with a sniffle, straightened up to look him as stoically as she could as she muttered.

"Thank you very much for bringing this Master Paku" she bowed her hands raised in the traditional Fire nation way one fist in one palm.

"No need to thank me Lady Shi. I am merely the bringer of the message." Paku bowed in return his fists closed.

"I take it your father explained it all to you?" the waterbending master quirked a brow.

"Some of it." Jade admitted. "He said that now that he and mom were both dead their memberships or something would be passed down to my brother and me-"

"Yes. It is a common practice amongst members in times of war" Paku explained calmly. "Should a parent die, they can pass on the token of their membership to their next of kin. If their kin then carried the token the order would then protect them and help them in times of need. Obviously that pendant you carry is your mother's token to you while your father would have passed his on to your brother."

"Right…But wait if the Order is supposed to help us, how do we know who's a member if they're so secret? Do they have their own tokens?"

"Most of them do." Paku nodded grimly "Though those that don't carry a token can usually be identified easily. If you know what to look for."

"And what do you look for?"

"Strategy." Paku shrugged "most of our members play Pai sho. And most of them are taught to favour the white lotus gambit. If you play that strategy first, and the member completes it even though he knows he can win against you, that means he or she are willing to offer you sanctuary in their care-"

"Uh…isn't that a bit vague?" Jade frowned "I mean anyone could use that gambit and what if I do win against them accidentally. How am I to know then without blowing my cover?"

"Because there is a code, which you would know if you had let me finish. Spirits you teenagers really are so impatient these days." Paku sighed rolling his eyes "Once you've completed the gambit, your opponent will tell you that the white lotus opens wide for those who know its secrets."

"So if they say that code, we're in the clear?" Jade bit her lip only to cry out as Paku scowled. "Okay! Okay I was just clarifying"

But even as the man began explaining all the other codes, Jades eyes fell upon her brother's sleeping form, and the scars over his body.

Shen…what have I done to you…

Dear Diary,

Today was the day of mourning for the Northern Water Tribe. Mass memorials and funerals took place all around the city, and Aang gave his address to the people.

I should give the kid credit, he managed to keep himself steady throughout the entire speech. Only at the end did he let himself shed a few tears before he quickly rounded up and left his spot at the head of the procession.

I was granted permission to attend the memorial, but I refused so I could remain with Shen who had just woken up. With the help of some healers we got him wrapped up and we watched from a balcony close to our shared room.

He's still very tired from his ordeal, but he seems to be doing much better. When he found out about his eye he was obviously upset at first, but now he seems to have made some peace with it, even if having half his vision blocked off does sometimes frustrate him.

There was a soft cursing as something clattered to the floor and Jade looked up from her diary.

There behind her Shen was trying to roll over and reach for the scroll their father had left for him which was now laying close to his sister's side.

"Here" with a soft sigh, Jade shut her diary, picked the scroll up and settled beside her brother who quickly reclined back into the furs of his bed.

"Thanks" he muttered hoarsely, wincing as his burnt shoulder ached from the effort.

"Don't mention it" Jade mumbled as she held it out for him to read, doing her best to look away, even though it was very tempting.

"I don't mind you reading it y'know" Shen snorted softly as she blinked at him in surprise.

"I know, but Father wrote it for you" Jade mumbled softly as she settled back down beside him. "Did you know…about the Order?"

"Yes." Shen sighed "Father told me about it a year ago, back when he had started teaching me the more advanced forms. He was planning on telling you soon after we found the Avatar but then you got close to the prince and that bastard Zhao started to stick his nose into our business-ow" he hissed reaching up to touch the bandaged scarred portion of his face, only to be stopped by Jade's gentle fingers.

"You've got to wait for the skin to heal over remember." She ushered him gently and he scowled irritably.

"Yeah I get it. And don't give me that look, it wasn't your fault" he added, catching sight of her guilty tears "Zhao was going to do worse to both of us if he won, even if father was alive."

"I know but still-" Jade broke into fresh sobs as her brother held her close to his uninjured side.

"I-I'm sorry" she blubbered. "I'm so sorry Shen"

"Shh…it's okay Jade. It's okay."

"NO!" she cried out glaring at him through tears "No it's not okay. You got hurt, you of all people shouldn't be telling ME that it's okay after what you've been through-"

"Yes. I've been through it and yes I'm angry." Shen snapped over the top of her "But I'm not angry at you. I can't be. Yeah you ran off and joined the Avatar at probably the worst possible moment in history, but you did what you thought was right to save lives, and for that I could never hate you. Who I do hate however are the people responsible for this war. Fire Lord Ozai, our grandfather, Zhao. Their the real enemies, and should I meet any of them I will definitely unleash all my anger out on them I can assure you."

"Shen" Jade breathed in astonishment, quite unsure of what to say as her brother turned his attention back to the scroll in front of him.

"But before I go about exacting any revenge I need the training. Father says his old master Jeong-Jeong is still alive, and could probably help with my firebending. He also says he's given you instructions to find Mom's mother in the Shan mountains to continue yours-"

"Y-yeah he has" Jade nodded scrubbing at her eyes hard. "But I don't know Shen, if we do go to train with these people, whoever they are-"

"-we'll have to split up" Shen finished grimly "Yeah…I know"

There was silence as both Shi siblings stared at the scroll before them, their eyes seeing but unseeing at the same time.

Only after five minutes did Jade break the silence, her voice small and tremulous as she leaned against his shoulder again.

"I don't want us to split up."

"Neither do I" Shen agreed as he leaned his head on top of hers. "but sometimes the hard way is the right way"

"Mom used to say that" Jade mumbled softly.

"I know" Shen murmured as he shut the scroll. "But in this case I think she's right. We don't have mom or dad protecting us anymore, we need to know how to protect ourselves, and the only way we can do that is if we master our bending, which we can't do together because you're Earth and I'm fire and our new masters are probably miles away from one another."

"Trust father to pick them" Jade muttered, but the corners of her mouth twitched upwards nonetheless.

"They might be far apart, but Father always does…did know how to pick the best of the best"

"I know but did he have to pick them so far apart from one another?" Jade grumbled. "We're all we've got left, what if something happens to one of us, we'd never know-"

"Nothing will happen to us Jade-" Shen tried to soothe his sister but she was having none of it.

"Rhino-shit! We're the kids of the Lucky Jade, probably two of the most wanted young people in the world apart from the Avatar. Once the Fire Nation finds out we're alive and no longer with their cause they'll be out for blood."

"Which is even more of a reason for us to find our masters and train" Shen steamrolled over her firmly.

"Jade I don't like the idea of us separating any more than you do. If something were to happen to you that I couldn't protect you from…" he paused to gulp down a lump in his throat "…but what scares me more is you not knowing how to defend yourself and of me not being strong enough as I am to protect you. You're right, this world is dangerous without mom and dad, which is exactly why we need to get stronger, even if we can't be with each other to do so"

Jade turned away, eyes once again streaming as she tried and failed to hold back more sobs.

"Hey…hey…" Shen grabbed her hand and squeezed it tight. "It's not the end of the world. Who knows maybe we might meet each other again on the road. You never know"

"We better" Jade sniffled "because I don't know what I'd do if I found out you'd…you'd…"

"Same here, Jade. Same here" Shen held his sister close, allowing tears to finally fall from his one good eye, as he held his sister close beside him.

It wasn't the most ideal situation, but they'd pull through. They had to.

For theirs and their parents sakes.

And for the worlds.

Dear Diary,

The days have been passing slowly. My brothers wounds are healing well under the watchful eyes of the Water Tribe healers, but it will be a while before he can take off the patch over his eye. Once that has healed he will be able to make his journey to the Earth Kingdom.

I wanted to put off leaving so that we could at least set sail for the Earth Kingdom at the same time, but Shen insisted that I should leave sooner rather than later if I am to reach our grandmother in the twin Shan mountains. Not only will that give me more time to start my training, but then I can go travel with Avatar Aang and his friends tomorrow. They are also headed to the Kolau mountain range to visit the Kingdom of Omashu which is close to the Shan mountains. Apparently Aang is an old friend of the crazy old king Bumi, a master Earth Bender who might be able to teach him the Art of Earth Bending.

I should admit whilst I don't want to leave my brother alone like this, I am rather excited at the prospect of seeing Omashu and the Shan mountains. After all it was the birthplace of my mother, and the place she and father met…

Father…there's so many things I wanted to ask him. Like Order of the White Lotus and about the Dragon, the Horse and the Snake he mentioned in his last letter. I tried asking Shen and Master Paku, but neither of them seemed to have a clue as to what he meant.

I can only assume the Dragon, Horse and Snake is some code for three dangerous people that would want me dead, or rather the Lucky Jade dead. I guess it would make sense that there would be a lot of people who had wanted my mother dead. She was a vigilante freedom fighter for the Shan mountains and if what Kira the Golem said of her is true, she must've had quite the bounty on her head.

Yeah, a bounty. Talk about no pressure huh?

And speaking of getting caught, I've heard no news of Lord Iroh or Zuko.

I guess at this point no news might be good news…but it also could mean that they could be dead in the icy tundra.

I sure hope not.

I mean don't get me wrong diary, I'm still super mad at Zuko for all the crap he's put me through. First he fakes his death and pulls the wool over my eyes for weeks, knowing that I was so upset about him being dead. Then he has the gall to accuse me of not caring about him. I mean yeah sure I betrayed the Fire Nation to help the Avatar but not to spite him. And besides what else was I to do when my mad uncle suddenly decided to go even more loopy and kill the moon spirit! Sit back and watch?

Sorry…guess I'm still working through some of my anger…I guess what I'm trying to say is that yes I'm angry, but I still…ugh! I still hope he's okay…

Whatever.

Tonight, is my last night writing here at the Water Tribe. Tomorrow my journey with Aang, Katara and Sokka begins.

I can only hope I can manage to say my goodbyes without chickening out at the last second…

Prince Zuko stared up at the blue sky above, his amber eyes dazed.

It had been days since he and his uncle had sailed away from the Water Tribe on their small raft. Days since either of them had eaten.

Already both of them were beginning to hallucinate, especially whenever they slept.

Zuko listened intently for his uncle's laboured breathing and his soft whimpers.

"Ruishi…forgive me…please forgive me…and Lu-Ten-"

The prince shut his eyes, doing his best to ignore the horrible screeching of the sea vultures circling over their heads.

So this was how it was going to end. Him, Zuko, banished crown prince of the Fire Nation, now a snack for a flock of ugly scavenger birds.

Snack…

He exhaled heavily as his thoughts turned back to their days on the ship. Of a stack of boxes in a warm kitchen and a small pair of delicate hands arranging them neatly.

"Let's see, we've got moo-sow, pig-chicken, some duck, and some rice-"

He could almost hear her voice as clearly as if she had spoken beside him.

It was just as he remembered it. Soft, gentle, with no anger or fear, just contented peaceful thoughtfulness as she put in all her efforts to make it look presentable. It was such a simple task, and yet there was something incredibly beautiful about each of the gestures her hands made as she moved through the steps-

He was so dazed as he watched her move through that haze of sunlight and moving water, that he didn't notice the large shadow as a larger sea vessel suddenly came up beside the raft and a coarse voice cried out!

"MAN OVERBOARD!"

There were heavy thuds as several feet suddenly jumped down onto the small raft and carefully made their way towards the pair of barely surviving stragglers.

Zuko struggled as one particularly burly person grabbed him and began to drag him across the wood, away from the now vanishing mirage of the happy young woman, which vanished as he was dragged up over the side of the strange new vessel, his vision turning black with exhaustion.

"All packed?" Shen glanced at his sister as she finished tying her satchel shut tight.

"Yes…everything's in" She mumbled as she went over the mental checklist in her head. Nothing was missing. Nothing except her father and brother, but them being with her now was no longer possible anymore.

She turned back to Shen, biting her lip as she tried to suppress the tears in her eyes.

"I am crazy…aren't I? Leaving you behind to go with the Avatar…it's crazy right? Please Shen just tell me if what I'm doing is too insane-"

"Jade" Shen reached out and gripped his sister's hand "It is crazy. But it's also the right thing."

Jade gripped his hand back tight, afraid that if she let it go he'd just vanish in a puff of smoke. For all she knew this could be the last time she ever saw her older brother alive ever. Every second that dragged passed was another second she could hold onto him and be the younger little bratty sister who didn't have to deal with responsibility or growing up. With him she could still just be a kid.

But once she walked out that door she had to be a woman, mature, grown up able to look after herself…on her own…. And the thought was beyond terrifying.

"I guess this is it huh?" She murmured softly.

"I guess so" Shen agreed solemnly. "Don't look at me like that. I'm sure we'll see each other again"

"You promise?" she said, painfully aware of how small and childish her voice sounded.

"Not even wild Rhinos trying to tear me apart could stop me" Shen cupped her cheek as he leaned in and gave her a small affectionate kiss on the forehead, before hugging her close and tight.

Jade hung onto him, her grip almost vice like as she buried her head into his uninjured shoulder.

"I love you"

"I love you too Lucky"

They pulled away, Jade reluctantly prizing herself off him as she dabbed at her now streaming eyes.

"Oh come here you rock-head" Shen took his sleeve and wiped at the spots she missed.

"Thanks." She managed a small smile as he reached out to ruffle her soft brown locks.

"Don't mention it. Besides, can't go out crying when you see your new friends again"

"True…true…" Jade straightened up and stood to her feet, her brother following her stead gingerly.

He'd only just started walking around on his own again, but already he was showing remarkable signs of improvement.

"You'll do fine" he murmured patting her shoulder softly.

"So will you." Jade smiled as she quickly grabbed his hand and squeezed it gently before reaching into the folds of her robes. "And speaking of doing alright I have something for you. Something for the road. Here,"

She handed him a small stack of papers held together by a thin brown string "It's recipes for Tea and some simple things you can make over a campfire. You should be able to find the ingredients easily in towns or in the wild. Some of these are mom's recipes and some are ones I learned from Dango and the crew when we were travelling. Don't worry I've got the originals in my diary."

"Thanks" Shen sighed in relief as he rifled through the papers that were filled in his sister's neat scrawls and small diagrams. "Goodness you have been busy"

"I figured if I can't travel with you I had to at least find some way to make sure you ate properly" Jade smirked as she reached out to hug her brother tightly again.

Behind the two Shi Siblings, a flap of animal skin opened and someone poked their head into their room.

"Hey Jade, we're all ready now-oh" Sokka stopped short at the sight of the brother and sister hugging.

They quickly broke apart as they saw the Water Tribe boy look down at his feet awkwardly.

"Sorry…I didn't mean to-"

"No it's okay" Shen smirked at the boy's discomfort "We had just finished saying goodbye"

He looked down at his sister and ruffled her hair again.

"Goodbye Lucky. I'm sure we'll see each other soon"

"We better" Jade rolled her eyes, but then smiled. "You take care of that eye of yours alright?"

"I will" Shen let her go. "Now off with you, your ship awaits, and you know it doesn't do to keep the captain waiting."

"Aye-aye sir!" Jade playfully saluted.

Yet even as she turned away to join Sokka out the door, both her and her brother, shed one last tear, though it was quickly hidden as the flap of hide fluttered shut behind her.

The room was large and grand and very dark. Tall black pillars with golden bases, disappeared into a shadowy high ceiling. The only source of light was a great wall of fire that separated the tall dais at the far end of the room furthest from the pair of grand red doors.

It was before this great wall of fire that a slender girl knelt, adorned in dark red and black battle armour of the Fire Nation. She bowed her head as the tall shadow in the throne behind the flames spoke in a scathing hiss.

"Iroh is a traitor and your brother Zuko is a failure. I have a task for you…"

"My wish is your command, Father" The girl lifted her head, her golden amber eyes dangerously glinting in the firelight.

Dear Diary,

Today is the first day I travel with the Avatar and his friends.

I'm not sure about what's going to happen next with my life. So much has already happened, but back then I always had a home or a family to go back to. Now my parents are dead and my brother and I must part ways. We hope to see one another again, even though the outcome does seem unlikely given the war that still rages.

I wonder if I will meet Lord Iroh or Prince Zuko or any other members of my old crew along the way.

After all the future is not set in stone. There may be hope yet but at least I am no longer alone.

Aang, Katara, Sokka and I are going to first travel to the city of Omashu and from there I will take the paths to the Shan mountains to find my grandmother. Spirits only knows what awaits me along the road.

There are so many mysteries I have yet to uncover, and challenges I must face before I become an Earthbender worthy of my mother's old title as the Lucky Jade. I may not be a member of the Shi clan anymore (given my betrayal) but I know that no matter where I go, my family loves me and I love them and even if most of them are gone, they will always be a part of who I am.

For I am a daughter of Fire and Earth, and I will fight to end this war with everything I've got, to protect those, who like me, have already lost so much in this war on both sides.

Till the next time Diary,

Yours,

Jade.
