Claire had finally made it to the sewers, unsure of why she'd been looking for them in the first place. She walked around the water, making a disgusted face with every step, when she heard the high-pitched girly scream. It sounded like Sherry, but her humorous side told her it might be Leon.
She ran down the tunnels, following the sound of the screams. She could tell she was getting closer, but froze when she heard a louder, deeper sound. It sounded a bit like the first tall tyrant man she'd seen, but deeper and more in pain. Kind of like the first monster they had run into.
She heard another muffled scream and started running again, certain this time it was Sherry. She reached a giant door, and pulled her gun out as she turned the corner. The first thing she saw were giant teeth coming right for her. Claire jumped backwards, falling on her ass.
Around the corner came what looked like an alligator, but three times the size of any she'd ever seen. Its teeth seemed to be the size of Claire's arm, and no doubt one bite would be enough from this guy. She scrambled to her feet and held up her gun, admiring the size of the thing.
The gator took a massive step forward, opening its jaw towards her. Claire backed up slowly, unsure if gators were blind or not. The last thing she wanted to do was run off and have it spot her and chase her down. As though it knew what she was thinking, the gator looked right at her and snapped its jaw in her direction. She managed to jump back just in time, and decided that was enough thinking.
She turned and ran down the sewer tunnel, hoping it wouldn't give chase. Of course, it did, and every step she took was followed by cursing. She looked back to see how close it was, and tripped over something, falling to the ground.
"Son of a bitch…" she said, getting up to her knees. She looked to see what had tripped her, and almost heard a choir play in her head; a giant propane tank was rolling on the ground. As the gator turned the corner, her plan was made. She got up and ran to the end of the tunnel, then turned back and aimed her gun up at the tank, and waited.
The gator seemed to take its sweet time walking over, and when it reached the tank it stopped, looked at it, then grabbed it in its mouth. Claire smiled, thinking back to when Chris had made her watch Jaws. She aimed the gun right at the tank and took a deep breath. "Seeya later, alliga-", she fired and the tank blew up, sending her flying back into a wall. "Fuuuck…OOOOOW…." she yelled. She looked up and where the gator once stood was now a bunch of bloody chunks, some still on fire. "Dude…that was awesome!" she said.
She remembered Sherry's screaming, and got up instantly. She ran down the tunnel as fast as she could, trying to ignore the pain in her leg, probably from the contact with the wall. She reached the door and looked inside the giant room full of water and garbage. Sherry was there, lying on a pile of trash, not moving. "Sherry! Hey, kid, get up!" she yelled. Sherry never responded.
"Come on…That water looks naaaastyyyy…" said Claire, but the child never budged. Sighing, Claire hopped in the water and made her way over to the kid. She gently shook her by the shoulder, and Sherry opened her eyes. "Hey there," said Claire. "If you were faking, I swear I'll drown you right here, right now."
Sherry sat up and went to argue, but held her stomach when a massive wave of pain came through. "Owww….my stomach huuuurts…" she said.
"Maybe it's your period's starting," said Claire.
"What's that?" asked Sherry.
"Basically, the start of your adulthood, and the end of your life," said Claire, smiling. "But seriously, what's wrong with you?"
"I told you, my stomach hurts," said Sherry. "I think I'm dying."
"Oh, so you're a doctor now? Paging Doctor Drama-Queen, you're wanted in the theatrics ward for extensive drama," said Claire. She noticed Sherry wasn't in a joking mood, and sighed. "Okay okay, I'm sorry, just…I mean, why would you randomly be dying? Did you drink any of this water?" she asked, splashing the water with her hand.
Sherry shook her head. "I think it's because of my daddy's thing," she said.
"Your…dad? What do you mean?" asked Claire.
"He was here, he called my name…But then he stuck his thing in my mouth and down my throat, and it really hurt," said Sherry.
Claire just stared at the girl, unsure of how to respond. "What, uh…What thing?" she asked.
"It was slimy," said Sherry. "It came out of his hand and went down my throat, and I think it's still in my stomach."
"Okay, that's probably the most disgusting thing I've ever heard of," said Claire. "So, do we need to find you a bathroom, or a bucket or something?"
Sherry stood up. "No, I think I'll be okay," she said. "Can we just go, I'm cold and I don't like it here."
"Yeah, alright…" Claire said, watching her. "But let me know right away if the pain comes back, okay? This could be something serious." Sherry nodded, and Claire held her hand out. "What happened to Leon?" she asked.
Sherry took Claire's hand and followed her out of the water and back into the tunnel. "He was too busy trying to get with that Ada girl, so I left them," she said.
"That doesn't sound very responsible," said Claire.
"I'm twelve, I'm not responsible for that guy," said Sherry.
Claire looked at her, then burst out laughing. "I meant not responsible of him," she said. They reached the end of the tunnel and the smell of the burning alligator chunks was overpowering.
"That smell is making me wanna barf," said Sherry. "And I already wanted to barf before this, soo…"
"You know, I did this…I killed this thing," said Claire, proudly. She wanted a way to distract Sherry while they made their way past the gross scene.
"No way," said Sherry.
"Way. Blew it up, Jaws style," said Claire. "I guess it pays off to have a big brother show you dumb action movies."
Sherry sighed. "I don't have a brother," she said.
"I'm sorry," said Claire.
"Or a sister," added Sherry.
"That sucks too," said Claire.
"I mean, it would even be cool to have a friend who is kind of like an older sister or something," said Sherry.
Claire nodded. "Yeah, that would be neat," she said.
"Could be a total stranger I've only known for like…a few hours or something."
"Yep,' said Claire. "Hey look, there's a ladder leading up to that vent up there. We should check it out, maybe it'll take us out of these smelly sewers."
Sherry nodded, looking down at the ground. "My stomach hurts again," she said.
Claire looked down at her and sighed. Whatever went down in that garbage room, she knew it would become a big problem soon, one she might not be able to fix. "Hang in there, kid, we'll get you some Pepto soon and you can nap it off once we find a nice quiet place to hide," she said. Sherry nodded, but Claire was concerned. She let Sherry go up the ladder first, and decided to make it her goal to keep an eye on the kid, and keep her alive, no matter what.
