He had told her to give him a day to absorb things, and just to make sure he kept his worked he gave her his address. Of course Darien would live with all of the other yuppies off of the Brooklyn Bay, he probably had a perfect view of Manhattan.
The two never did get to have their dinner together.
Bunny sighed and flopped onto the giant bed. She should have added 'just kidding' quickly to the end of that sentence. He had gotten so quiet and began to ask her questions.
He doubted the child was his.
Bunny honestly wasn't that surprised. She would have doubted too if some random had come up to her with the same situation.
It didn't help that Bunny was just at a loss of what to do. She had no idea what her plan of action should be.
"He's probably freaking out," she said to herself. If she closed her eyes she could almost pretend that she was talking to Luna, who would be curled up near the headboard.
Her cell phone began to play her cousins ringtone, Bunny debated on answering for a few seconds before hopping off of the bed to get it from the dresser.
"What's up?" She asked as she answered, a little desperate to speak with someone.
"How are things going?" Mina asked. "My cousin senses are tingling."
Bunny couldn't help but chuckle, "So I kind of accidently let it slip that I was pregnant."
"What? How? You're supposed to ease into these types of things!"
Bunny wondered if Mina had never been pregnant before. How would she know how to behave in this kind of scenario?
Instead of saying anything sarcastic, Bunny pinched the bridge of her nose and let out a groan.
Mina took the hint and changed the subject, "I can't wait to see you. Just another ten days and I'll be in Florida again."
"Who's picking you up from the airport?" Bunny asked while pacing the apartment. She had her untouched food from the restaurant in the refrigerator. Maybe she should heat it up and begin to pig out while watching some reality TV.
"Amara," Mina answered shyly.
Amara Tenoh was Mina's older half-sister. She had no relation to Bunny but she loved Amara all the same. Amara had been their hero growing up, she was a few years older than both Mina and Bunny, and she was rough around the edges but knew when to be gentle.
Because Amara was a lesbian Mina's father had kicked her off of the family tree. After that had happened Amara changed her last name to her mother's maiden name, and hadn't spoken to her father since. Her lover, Michelle, was the only own who knew how to calm down Amara's wild ways.
"I haven't seen her in forever," Bunny stated.
Mina hummed in agreement before changing the subject.
The doorbell ringing caught Bunny's attention. Nobody besides her family and Darien knew where she was staying. Her heart was heavy in her chest as she made her way towards the living room window to look down onto the street.
Darien waved at her from the stoop.
It was nearly 11 at night, what was he doing here when she knew he had to work early in the morning?
"Mina I have to go, Darien is here." They exchanged a brief goodbye before hanging up with one another.
Bunny threw her keys down to Darien from the kitchen window and waited for him to come upstairs.
"What are you doing here?" She asked him as soon a she came into the apartment.
His midnight blue eyes took in their surroundings before taking in a deep breath, "before anything, I'd like a DNA test."
His admittance threw her for a loop. Bunny couldn't blame him, they barely knew each other. However she was a little insulted. Did he really think she slept around with multiple men around the same time she was with him? Honestly?
Instead of blowing up she counted to ten in her head before nodding, "I think we can do a test while the baby is still in the womb. Hang on, I have a friend who's a doctor."
Her cell phone was still on the coffee table where she left it when she pressed the speed dial number for Amy and left it on speaker phone.
Darien paced anxiously, his nervousness starting to rub off on Bunny.
"Hey, is something the matter?" Nothing had ever sounded as soothing as Amy's voice.
"Hey Ames," Bunny leaned closer to the phone, "sorry I'm calling you so late, but I have a question to ask you."
"It's alright, I'm actually getting ready for work. What's your question?"
"Darien and I were wondering, how early can we do a paternity test?" She winced as the words rolled off of her tongue.
Amy hummed thoughtfully, "you can get one done while the fetus is still in the womb as early as 9 weeks into your first trimester. There's this new procedure called the SNP Microarray, it's a non-invasive prenatal paternity test. It doesn't require a needle to be inserted into the mother's womb. What this does is preserves and analyzes the fetuses DNA found naturally in the mothers bloodstream. It's quite fascinating, and the test is 99/9% accurate. It can be pricey, because it's a newer procedure, it can cost up to, but not limited, two grand. There are other procedures that can be done to check, but they can put a great risk to you or the fetus, and involve a needle being inserted into the womb. The SNP Microarray has the least amount of known risks to date. I'm sorry to cut this short, but I have to go now otherwise I'll be late for work."
"No, you were very informative. Thank you Amy." Bunny ended the call then looked up at the man who had seated himself across from her at the coffee table.
"How many weeks are you now?" Darien asked.
Bunny sighed, "Eight."
To her surprise he seemed to brighten up a bit, "so that means that you'll be nine before the New Year. That's fantastic. You can get the test done here, I'll find you a doctor and I'll pay for it too."
Bunny couldn't help the bitter smile that crept over her face at the thought of how he would react when he realized that it really was his child.
New York had been fun after that. Darien didn't avoid her, he took days off to spend time with her. They did all of the tourists sights together and had a decent time.
Spending Christmas traveling around the city instead of at home with her family was strange. She called her parents in the evening and spoke to them and her brother. She texted her friends, everyone was doing fine. Still, she was homesick. Nothing beat a holiday at home surrounding be loved ones.
The cold was a little unbearable too. Some parts of the cement were slick with ice from the sleet. Bunny was happy that she had brought the proper clothing, but she couldn't wait to get back to the Florida sunshine.
Darien was sweet to her and was the upmost gentleman in every way. When he mentioned that he had an appointment ready the day after she hit nine weeks Bunny could only bite her lip and nod. She called her doctor about it afterwards, Catzi was on board with the idea. This helped pacify any doubts.
Dr. Tomoe was a little creepy, but he was a professional and passionate about his work.
"All we have to do is take a blood sample from both of you," He told them as he and his nurse placed rubber bands on their arms.
"I guess this is a bad time to mention my fear of needles," Darien gave a pathetic half-smile to Bunny.
She grinned in response. Bunny wasn't a fan of needles either, but she didn't mind it too much. Her veins were good and usually easy to find. The nurse working on her arm was gentle and she barely felt her blood be taken.
After everything was done Dr. Tomoe informed them that it would take three to five business days for the results to come in and that he would send each of them a copy. They thanked the doctor and left shortly after.
"Darien," Bunny started as the two of them made their way to a nearby café for a late lunch. "What if I don't want to keep it?"
He peered down at her, "everything is your choice." He was careful with his words, "but what if I want the child? Would you be willing to sign over the baby to me?"
The tension between them became thick. She didn't want to leave her baby and never be a part of its life. She wasn't that type of person.
"It's not that I don't want the baby," Bunny told him in a small voice, "I just don't know what to do."
Darien's expression softened, "I can understand that. I'm a bit lost too."
He reached over and grabbed her hand, his thumb rubbed over her knuckles. She squeezed his hand back.
"Bunny," Darien's voice lowered, "I like you, I wouldn't mind to make this work."
Bunny stared up at him for a moment, "I don't want to be in a relationship with you just because I'm pregnant. That's not fair to anyone in this."
Darien nodded, "okay. How about we just figure this out as we go?"
Bunny agreed with that. She couldn't help but wonder how things would be in the months to come.
