Dear Readers,
I just wanted to thank you guys for reading and an extra thank you to the people who commented/review; they were all Guests, but that's okay with me. It makes things a lot easier when I'm writing like I said. Please keep commenting/reviewing; it means a lot you guys. I don't care if they're the same people commenting/reviewing; as long as I get more of those there will be more chapters.
Now for the people who commented. One person commented: I just want to see her fall more and have Newt on her side. This of course is going to happen; Newt is going to be on her side. I really didn't understand what you meant by you want her to fall more? Do you want her to fall more for Newt or fall in general so he has to catch her? Please let me know.
The next person to commented: It's good that you explain everything, but I hope something actually happens in the nest chapter. P.S. I love your OC. I'm glad you like how I explain things. I worry there are times where I don't explain enough. Now I'm sorry to say this chapter is going to have more explaining, but it's going to be about the Maze. Hence the name of the chapter. But if you want something to happen it will probably happen in the next chapter; Chapter 5. I am also glad you like my OC.
Please read this part! I have something to ask you readers. I would like you know what you guys would like to see happen in my story. I do know how I want this story to go but I do want you guys to tell me what you want to see happen. I like hearing your ideas and I know I will need to hear them if I'm going to make this book as long as the originals. Don't be afraid to go into details. I know I will be add some or more of your ideas. So again, please comment/review.
On another note; I thought I would let you know that this story is going to be based on the book and the move. Same when Thomas comes in, in the Maze Runner. Now when I do the Scorch Trials and the Death Cure are going to be exactly like the moves.
Sorry about the long note; thank you for bearing with me. I will let you guys read know.
Thank you,
Indian-Girl-1994
Chapter 4.
The Maze
I didn't take us long to get to the South door and the boys stopped and Newt let go of my hand. Where I was standing, I could feel a cool breeze blow across my body. The breeze made me shiver; it was a lot hotter than I thought it was in the Glade. Even though I couldn't see and didn't know what was there I could tell something dangerous was beyond that door.
"Okay," I said breaking the silence. "I can sense something is wrong here. What am I supposed to be looking at?"
"There are four doors," Nick described. "North, South, East, and West; I think you already knew that. But the walls and door are at least two hundred to three hundred feet tall. The doors clothes at night. Outside those walls, is the maze."
Nick paused and I opened my mouth to say something but someone put a finger to my lips.
"Let him talk Vick," Newt hushed.
"Two months we've been here," Nick continued. "For two months, we've tried to solve this thing, but no luck. We call it the maze because there's walls – the same size as the walls here – that make twists and turns. Every night the walls move making it harder and harder to figure it out."
"That's what the Runners do," Newt went on for Nick. "We run out there every day to find a way out of here. We run all day and have to be home before the doors close."
"Why do you have to be here before the doors close?" I asked.
"There's… creatures out there Vicky," Nick stated. "We call them Grievers. They are the creature that live in the Maze and they come out after dark. That's why the doors close at night; to keep them out. Once they've gone to where ever they belong during the day, the doors open."
It was quiet again for a few seconds. It seemed like Nick couldn't go on. So, Newt continued for him.
"This is why we have to be back before the doors close," he explained. "These creatures try to kill anyone who is left in the maze and no one lives to tell the tail."
"What do these Grievers look like?" I asked.
"I don't think you're ready for the Greenie."
"Do you even know what they look like? Have you seen one?
"Yes I've seen one."
"Then please. I need to know so I can at least have a mental image of it."
"Just tell her Newt. Considering her problem, she's right."
"Okay fine."
Newt paused and I gave him as much time as he needed. When he was ready I heard him let out a heavy sigh.
"Grievers…" Newt muttered, "are bulbous, dark creatures, with many appendages; spikes, shears, rods, things like that. The way they move is kind of like a forward roll… They will sting you if they don't kill you and you're lucky enough to get away from them. Just a few people have been stung before, and bu the looks of it, it is extremely painful."
I could picture them as Newt described these horrible creatures. A shiver ran up and down my spine as I thought about it, and I knew I didn't want to be face to face with these creatures, ever.
"What do you do when someone is stung?" I questioned.
"Well if they get back in time, they can get the Grief Serum and that heals them, but they are never the same after they go through the Changing."
"The Changing?"
"It's what the Grief Serum does. It's almost as bad as being stung."
"How are they different?"
"They get a few of their memories back."
"Really?"
"Bloody Hell Vick I wouldn't have told you that if it weren't true."
"Right… Sorry."
Silence took over once more. I think they were just letting everything sink in. And it was, but so were the questions.
"Wait," I muttered. "You said if they get back in time they can get the Greif Serum. What happens if they don't get back in time?"
"I think you can figure that out for yourself," Nick said.
"They die."
"Good that."
"Do these things make a sound? Anything I need to listen for?"
"That's the only thing that lets you know they're there. They make a whirring and clinking sound when they move. We think it's the machinery inside of them, because they reflect light when its shown on them."
"And how do you know this? If people have seen them but haven't lived to tell the tail, how do you know?"
"Like I said before," Newt began to answer, "there are a few people who have been stung so maybe that was a little bit of a lie, but also there's this little window not too far from where. We like to take the newbies over there so they can get a good look at them, but oddly enough that won't do much good for you."
"That's for sure."
Everyone paused as we stood at the South door. I didn't know what was next on this little tour but I was ready to get started again.
"Well I've got leader things to do," Nick said breaking the silence. "I know there is more on the tour but I know Newt can finish it. I'm going to leave you in his care from now on. It was nice meeting you Greenbean."
"Thank you, Nick," I told him.
"No problem. I'll come find you after dinner to talk about somethings."
I heard Nick leave as New grabbed my hand again and started leading me back in the direction we came. There was so much to think about, but I was still curious about the place I lived in.
"Hey Newt?" I asked.
"Yes Vic?" he answered.
"Can we take a walk around the wall. I know this sounds weird but I want to feel it."
"Considering the shape you're in I don't find that weird at all."
Newt started guiding me toward my destination. Once we got there he put my hand on the wall; it was rough and cold, and was covered in some kind of vines.
"What is this?" I asked grabbing onto the plant.
"We don't know exactly," Newt stated. "It' just vines to us. We mostly use it for rope when we run out of the real stuff."
I could hear a smile in his voice and I had to turn away so I wouldn't smile back. I started walking; following the wall as I went. As I walked I could hear Newt following me. It was quiet as we made our way around the wall, and it was nice. Even though I just got here I felt like I had known this boy far longer. So far life in the Glade didn't seem like it would be too bad.
