Author's Note: So it took over a week to update, but at least it didn't take 8 months this time. I'm really doing my best to work on this, but I've been busy working. *Sigh* But I'm really going to make an effort to update more often.
Once again, I'd like to thank everyone for their support. Honestly, if I didn't know that so many of you were reading and enjoying my writing, I probably would have quit a long time ago. Keep commenting. I read all my comments and they're my favorite part of writing fan fiction. Speaking of comments…
LillyZ, thanks for your comment. I'm glad to know I'm not alone on the whole writing at night thing. Also, it was nice to know that people are actually reading the author's notes. Ha ha.
Alright, I'll get to the story now.
Disclaimer: I've mentioned it before, but just to clear, I don't own the Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Sam and Patrick soon arrived at the Big Boy. They spotted Mary Elizabeth sitting at a booth. She was wearing her usual black attire, and was sipping a soda as she review Ed the menu. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Sam and Patrick joined her.
The conversation started normally. They talked about the music they had been listening to. Mary Elizabeth repeated all the reasons she was a vegan when Patrick suggested she get a burger. Sam told stories about college. Mary Elizabeth expressed excitement for starting at Harvard in a week. Patrick told jokes. Everything was normal.
"Okay, it's killing me. Mary Elizabeth, what's the thing you had to tell us that was so important that we had to rush here," Patrick finally asked. Sam gave him a look and mouthed to not be rude. "I'm sorry, it was killing me. It was. I tried not to be rude, but I couldn't take it anymore," Patrick said in defense.
"Curiosity killed the cat," Mary Elizabeth told him in annoyance. Patrick rolled his eyes.
"Mary Elizabeth, I'm shocked. You're never one to repeat clichés made up by people with, pardon my French, a stick up their ass. What's got you in such a bad mood?"
"I'm not in a bad mood. I just get irritated when you act like an idiot, which, for the record, is all the time." Mary Elizabeth gave Patrick a dirty look. He gave her one back. They both stared each other down for what might have been a full minute before they both broke into laughter.
"You guys are so messed up!" said Sam, but she was laughing too.
"Alright," Mary Elizabeth started when they had all finally calmed down. "It's going to sound really stupid and corny, and it's completely out of character for me, but… what I wanted to tell you guys is that I'm really going to miss you. I mean, I know we've had our ups and downs, but you guys are honestly the best friends I could ever ask for. I know that I act angry and mean all the time, but I really do love you guys. You're the only people who have ever accepted me for who I am, and who have never tried to correct my flaws. You listen to my rants. You care about my opinions. We're all going to go to our separate colleges soon, and my only fear is that we'll grow apart. I'm never going to find anyone like you guys again. You two are one of a kind. What I'm trying to say is, I love you guys, and I want us to be in each other's lives for a really long time. I just want to make sure that we don't lose touch is all."
Sam gave Mary Elizabeth a warm smile. When Sam smiles, it has this effect on you. It's like all of your fears just melt away. They don't scare you anymore because you know that no matter what happens, Sam will always be there to help you threw. Nothing in the world is more reassuring.
"I love you too. You're one of my best friends, and I'll make sure that it stays that way forever. There are so many ways that we can keep in touch. We'll check in with each other so often you won't even feel like we're apart. We can promise to call each other every night. Or, Charlie likes to write me a letter every week. We can visit each other on campus. And don't forget that we'll see each other when we have school breaks," Sam promised her.
"Same here," added Patrick, making Mary Elizabeth laugh.
"You guys are right. I was being dumb. I know we'll always be friends, even though we don't see each other as often. Plus, I'll make new friends in college. It's just nice to know that we're all going to be there for each other when needed. I don't know why I expected anything less from you two." They all took a moment to really look at one another. Friends like this were truly hard to come by, especially in High School. They were all very lucky. "Who I really feel for is Charlie. At least we get to start fresh. He's going to be left alone in a school full of people who have already decided that he's just the weirdo quiet kid. And after what happened to him this summer, it's like abandoning a wounded puppy or something. I seriously feel bad leaving him, even though the way he broke up with me was totally fucked up."
Sam had a somber look on her face, but Patrick started hysterically laughing. Both girls turned and stared at him with shocked, questioning gazes.
"No, I feel really bad for leaving Charlie. I'm not kidding, it keeps me up at night, but then you mentioned the breakup. Sam, I can't wait to read that letter. I mean seriously, what was Charlie thinking?" Patrick explained, hints of laughter in his voice. Sam gave a small smile, and Mary Elizabeth just looked confused.
"What letter?" she questioned. Sam and Patrick explained how Charlie had been writing the letters throughout the year, and how he decided that he trusted Sam and Patrick enough to let them read them.
"Okay. I'm going to read them too," Mary Elizabeth decided. Sam and Patrick shared a look.
