River's POV
"I'm not." I said, holding out a hand for her to shake. "Jenny. Long time no see."
"Um... you know me? Like, actually properly? But I just regenerated!" Jenny said, taking my hand for a split second.
"Yes, you did." I said, a twinkle in my eyes. "I know. You told me earlier. But." I sighed, grabbing her arm and leading her out of the ring of people we were in. "Carry on your reading and stuff!" I called behind me. Then, I leaned over to her. "We should probably talk somewhere more private. Where the mortals won't hear us." I pulled her over to an empty, somewhat remote library table where we both automatically took a seat.
"Mortals? And just who do you think you are? Going about and talking as if you are all high, mighty, and supreme to everyone else!" Jenny scolded. "As far as I can tell, you are human. Oh Riordan, don't tell me you like to kill people for fun. That would be bad. Then I would have to kick your butt."
I chuckled, amused. I'm going to have fun with this, I thought. "So I'm guessing that you don't know me yet, huh? Oh dear Rassilon, it's like mum all over again!" Then I sighed, and shook out my whole body, as if getting rid of all my bad emotions. "Let's start again. My name is River Song, yours is Jenny. Clearly, I know you. I've know you for a couple of years. You are the Doctor's daughter. Born on the planet of Messaline of just a flesh sample." I sat back, and had the satisfaction of watching the blood drain from her face.
"But... but that's not possible! You died. You even have a shrine, and the Tower of Song and Freedom!" She protested.
I grinned. "What, as in the song?"
She looked confused for a split second, then, changed the subject. "Wait... you were the one that allowed me access to the Gallifreyan articles! And you tripped me!" She deadpanned.
"You act like it was shameful." I said, sipping on champagne that had definitely not been there a second ago. "Well, the second part. First one, yes. I did. Second one, I guess I can admit to that one too."
Her eyes just proceeded to get even wider at the champagne glass in my hand. "How did you- Never mind. I just don't want to know."
"You learn fast." I commented. "I assume there is a reason that you are here, other than to enjoy a bit of light reading?"
She scowled, then sighed. "Yes. I told Dad that I had gotten access to articles containing information about time lords from this library, and he wanted to make sure that no one else can see it. Not sure why, though."
I leaned forward. "Have you ever heard the phrase, 'knowledge is power'?"
"Yeah..."
"Well, knowledge about time lords is a very touchy subject. They were basically gods. Think about it: if you were dying, and you didn't want to die, wouldn't you like to just be able to change your appearance? Or have a machine that moves through all of time and space so you can mess with your enemies, stop battles before they started, kill off someone who has a very big role in whatever big and important? Time lords were a very dangerous species. And the Doctor is the last time lord born on Gallifrey that knows all of that stuff."
"If he's the last one that knows all of that, then why are there documents about it in this library?" she asked.
"Ooh, good question." a new voice commented.
We both nearly snapped our necks looking at The Doctor.
"Sweetie." I said, standing up.
"River Song." he said, looking at me with almost no emotion in his features.
"Sweetie, what's wrong?" I asked him, worried.
"Someone else has gotten access to the documents. I'm too late. They are gone."
