Seven Months Ago:

Three amazing years of marriage down the drain over one night. The couple sat on the three person couch leaving a whole space in between the two. Neither had looked at each other since they entered at different times, but at least both were speaking to the therapist. It was odd how they went from being hot and passionate, to cold and couldn't even look at each other without arguing. Twenty four years old woman and thirty years old man facing a divorce after just three years.

"Elena, do you think you can ever get over the cheating?" Dr. Fell asked her. That one question finally caused Elijah to look over at his estranged wife for the first time in the session.

"I don't know." Elena started to say.

"Obviously, you can't since you filed for divorce and took our daughter away." Elijah exclaimed.

"I can't be married to you anymore Elijah. I can't be." Elena said. "I won't be the wife who was embarrassed in front of everyone we know, and still stayed around. I am not a foolish girl. I can't do it, you broke my heart over some sort of pay back for nothing. My heart dropped, snapped, clenched when I saw you kiss her, then saw the rest just made it fall. So, I left, I filed for divorce, and took our daughter away. I couldn't stay in our home knowing he would be coming home, smelling like her." Elena had to wipe the tears forming in her eyes away so she did not look weak. She wanted to look strong even in therapy.

"Have you two been dating others like I suggested?" Dr. Fell asked the pair.

"He has." Elena mumbled under her breath.

"And you haven't?" Elijah challenged her. "Yes, I have been seeing this girl Hayley, for the past month. And Elena has been seeing a medical student with a straight A average, drives around in a Bentley his parents bought him, and never been out of New York before."

"Oh my god! You background checked him!" Elena accused him.

"Of course, I did." Elijah showed no remorse what so ever for doing that to her. For breaking her trust even more. Yet he barely showed remorse for that either.

Before Dr. Fell could say anything to calm the pair, Elena grabbed her purse and stormed out of the office. Several of the agents in the Law office watched as Elena stormed right out of the therapist office to the elevators. Even Mikael's yelling for her didn't stop the woman. Elijah tried his best to catch up with the pissed off woman, but his brother stopped him saying he would just make it so much worse than it already was.

When they were together, they barely ever even argued with each other. At least they weren't arguing in front of their daughter. It was something both them tried not to do. Elena had been staying at a hotel for the last two months since she couldn't stay with Alaric forever, and Elijah showed no interest in giving her the house. She returned to the hotel room shortly after she picked Ava up from Alaric's. To her surprise both of her parents in law were there along with her husband. All three of them were looking right at Elena, as she was holding her daughter close to her.

"Elena, you can't live here and raise our grandchild." Esther spoke first.

"She should live in her home." Elijah made a comment that earned him glares from his parents who looked like they were going to slap him.

"Wait are you three telling me, you are taking her away from me?" Elena asked them in disbelief that they came here to talk about this.

"Until you find some where more suitable to live with a child." Esther said. "You aren't fit to be raising her here especially with you constantly dropping her off at your uncle's house. At home, she will have Lexi and a staff to watch over her." Elena couldn't believe Esther was saying this. Couldn't believe they were trying to take her daughter away from her.

"Excuse me? Elijah and his siblings last time I heard basically grew up in hotel rooms. Oh, and the fact I did have suitable house for Ava, but I don't get to live there. Since your son changed the password and the guards were ordered not let me in." Elena challenged them. "Your son was even so kind to lock me out of our bank account. Thank god for my parents' trust fund. Get out now, and if you try to take my daughter, I will go to the judge and get a full custody of here!"

Pacing back and forth in the hospital, running hand through hair to calm down, but there it is impossible to calm down when the love of your life took a bullet meant for you. Not only that but not being able to see them because you are no longer married. All the agents were nervous as two people were fighting for their lives in there. The love of their life and their sibling. Just was divesting to everyone. Mikael couldn't stop bouncing his knee and had his hands in his face. Caroline was arguing with the doctor about learning more about the conditions while Bonnie was trying to calm her down. Kol and Davina came rushing through the door with Esther and Ava right behind them. Took the first flight out to the Italy since the company jet was already in use. Kol went right over to Rebekah to find out more than what he was told on the phone. Davina took Ava from Esther's arms and took Ava to her parent while Ava's other parent was flat lining.

Divorce was final. No longer was she Elena Mikaelson, she was now Elena Gilbert once more. It was hard, she felt alone. Even though she was dating a man for several months, nothing compared to her now ex-husband living with his girlfriend. At the time, Ava was with her dad at her first day of the year for preschool. Elena sat in her work chair, typing up the findings of her latest case. It was small work, but it needed to get done. She was sending in the files when Mikael walked in.

"Elena, may we talk?" When he addressed her by her first name, he wasn't being a boss but the man behind the name.

"Of course." She said quickly still stunned by the fact, he wanted to talk to her since last time they talked they tried to take her daughter away.

Mikael sat down and looked at Elena right in the eyes. "I would like to apologize for my wife, my son and I with what we tried to do. It was wrong, wrong from the get go." Mikael started to tell her. "I understand why you did what you did. Esther as you know cheated on me. But I stayed, but before that, we separated. She took the kids and the house, and I went to the hotel. With what you did showed some bravery. We had no right to tell you how to raise your child or try to take your child either."

His words stunned and surprised her by the love behind the words. It was sweet that he came to her. Neither Esther or Elijah apologized for what they tried to do. Maybe Elijah giving her the house, the staff, the cars, money, and 75-25 custody was his apology to about that as well.

"Thank you, that means so much to me." She told him being honest. It was the first time of many times the two would talk like two people that didn't have him calling her Gilbert.

There were phone calls to be made still, more family to call, more people to notify. There was so much to do, but Kol and Bonnie the most level headed two at the time could handle it better than anyone else. Thankfully Davina took care of Ava since both of her parents were sort of busy. Caroline was on the phone with her own mother talking with her, checking in on the kids. Rebekah finally calmed down enough to help out.

It was nerve wrecking that they were still in surgery after three hours. What was taking so long? Why weren't they out of surgery yet? And why hadn't any of the doctors updated them about their conditions? Too many questions running through everyone's minds. It was making anyone panic. Thinking the worst. Thinking that both died and now the doctors were figuring out on how to tell them.

When the doctor did come out, he did not look happy, or sad. Just neutral which was the worst because there was no way of telling on how the news would be. No one except for Mikael got up and went to the doctor to receive the news.

Why did it still get to him, why did it hurt him still, why? Elijah asked himself as he was waiting in the living room of the house he bought for Elena and him. Rose had let him in, since Elena and Ava weren't home yet. No, they were out with Elena's boyfriend according to Rose, who didn't care she was pissing off her former boss. But that was how all the staff treated him after finding out what he had done to their friend. It was how everyone but Hayley treated him. Treated him like a cold, hearted bastard. That was what he felt like himself every day he watches Elena walk into the office and ignore him. How he felt every time he had to pick his daughter up for a few days out of the month. It was all his fault. It was his fault Elena hated him. It was his fault for breaking up their marriage. But he couldn't say that out loud or he would break.

"Daddy!" His sweet daughter shrieked as she ran into the house with Elena in tow. When Elijah saw all the bags and toys in her arms, he went to help her, but Rose helped her instead. Rather than just standing there, he picked up Ava and kissed her cheek making Ava giggle and kick her feet.

"Where were you two?" Elijah asked Elena. "It was my time thirty minutes ago."

"We were at the park. On our way back, we forgot Bun Bun so we had to turn around. I am sorry." Elena said as she handed Elijah Ava's book bag. "I have her suitcase upstairs already to go."

"Lexi already grabbed it for me, and I put it in my car." Elijah was surprised that she wasn't snapping or lashing out at all. Just like she had been for the last few months. It made him worry. Elena was happy without him, and it was breaking his heart more than when she filed for divorce. Sure, he had moved in with Hayley, but he wasn't too happy without his Elena. He knew he screwed up, ruined them, but he couldn't find himself admitting to it.

"Okay good, then I will see you three days, sweetie." Elena kissed the top of Ava's head then she moved aside so Elijah could get through. Elijah made it to the front door before Elena stopped him. "Elijah I forgot to tell you, I won't be in until Monday."

"Why?" Elijah looked at her.

"Not that is your business." Those words were never good. It always meant something about relationships at least that is what TV and literature taught him. Elijah was expecting her to say that she was going on some trip with Damon. "I am going to meet Jeremy and Bonnie to help pack up Bonnie's mom's place." That worried Elijah much more since it would be the first time Elena would be in Mystic Falls without him to help her through her pain.

"Is that a smart idea?" Elijah watched as Elena's happiness fell and a glare came upon her soft features.

"I am a big girl Elijah. You can go now." Elena opened the door for Elijah to leave. Once he stepped out with Ava, Elena slammed the door right behind them. Elijah looked at Ava who was confused.

"It is okay darling." Elijah kissed Ava's head and took her to his car to take her to his place.

...

Five Hours Ago

The three of them sat a large circular table waiting for Silas to arrive. Katherine looked more nervous than the couple did, but deep down Elena was the scared little child that she was when she lost her family. Elijah's hand was on her thigh rubbing it gently to help calm her down. It wasn't that she was terrified of Silas because of what he could do since she could handle herself with that. No, it was about how Silas looked just like Stefan. Knowing that she was hurting inside, made Elijah want to do something to fix it, but only could fix it. Just something Elena needed to do, but Elijah would be by her side the full time protecting the woman he loves.

"Where the hell is he?" Katherine was getting annoyed and nervous all at the same time.

"He is probably running late." Elena said while her hand was holding Elijah's under the table. For the first time in a year, both were happy because they had each other. Both were smiling even though they were to deal with Silas. Knowing Stefan was Silas's brother had Elena even more nervous to be dealing with the man. But to know that Stefan and Silas both were responsible for her parent's death made her bloody boil with anger. The man she once loved, not only abused and raped her, but played with a hand in her parents' death. That had Elena wanting revenge more than anything. She wanted Stefan, Silas, and everyone else in Silas's organization to suffer.

The restaurant grew silent which only could mean he was there. And he wasn't alone. By his side was both men from the previous night along with Stefan. Both twins froze, becoming stiff at the same time. Both were afraid. Both scared. Both worried for the other one.

"Well isn't it my favorite pair of twins." Stefan spoke with a smirk on his lips.

"What is this?" Elijah asked Silas.

"I thought we could have little reunion." Silas said as he sat down at the table at the same time his men did. Stefan didn't take his eyes off Elena, but Elena was looking everywhere, but at him. Katherine was not so afraid of Stefan, and had no problem glaring at him. "But first before we get to hellos, what the fuck is Katherine doing here?"

"You wanted to see our pull at the Law. This what we could do." Elijah spoke for the group.

"No I wanted you to get my man into the Law. I got a girlfriend to worry about." Silas made himself clear.

"Which girlfriend is that?" Katherine asked with a sarcastic tone her voice. Elena kicked her under the table and shot her a glare to shut up.

"I would watch your tongue Katerina." Silas threatened her. Then his eyes returned to Elena and Elijah. "If you could get her out, you should have no problem getting me in to see Amara."

"We can't. You are wanted by them." Elena finally spoke. "Katherine has seen and spoken to Amara. She is fine, a little insane but she is on some medicine."

"Sounds like you have spoken to her as well, Elena." Stefan's voices made the air on Elena's body stand up and her to shiver a little in her chair. It was like a ghost passed through her. Silas turned his head to his brother glaring at him, but trying to figure out where he was going with it. "Isn't your family involved with the Law?"

"My adopted family was. I am not." Elena lied easily. "I switched sides after they locked up Katherine."

"Sad on how they died." Stefan smirked "I heard you were on the kill list but busy in the hospital." Just as he spoke Elena started remembering things she wish were far behind her.

"Shut up!" Elijah yelled at Stefan then turned to Silas. "Deal is off he is involved."

"Elijah." Elena grabbed Elijah's arm to pull him back into the role of her husband not Agent Mikaelson.

"You know I want to renegotiate the deal myself." Everything felt so fast after Silas spoke. Two gun shots went off, followed by more gun shots. "You and I have a deal, Elena. Without your husband, if he survives." Elena was down on the ground with her napkin trying to stop the bleeding coming from Elijah's chest from the two gun shots that he took. Her eyes were blurry from the tears coming out and she couldn't stop her screaming. But her screaming was overshadow by that of her best friend whose husband was also fighting for his life.

Both of the brothers were finally out of surgery, but not out of the woods as the doctor said. Klaus only had one shot to his abdomen, but still fatal. Elijah had one shot by his heart and the other tore through his body barely missing his lungs. A machine was breathing for Elijah, and Klaus was asleep from the medicine. Elena and Caroline didn't want their children seeing their fathers that way so only the two went to go see the brothers. Elena sat next to Elijah and grabbed his hand as her eyes looked at the machines. Then her doe eyes found him.

"You got to fight this." She started to speak. "You got to. We are just putting ourselves back together. I don't want to lose you." She paused to blink out the tears and to stop the sob forming in her throat. It was breaking her heart that he was like this. "I love you Elijah. You are it for me. I can't lose you again. I forgive you. I forgive the cheating, I forgive you for trying to take Ava. I forgive you for everything. I should have told you that sooner, but I need you to know I do forgive you. I wish we could have a do over of this last year. I have missed you. Please recover for us, for your daughter." She carefully leaned in and kissed his head when she felt his hand squeeze hers. She pulled back to call a doctor in as his eyes started to open.

But the doctor was busy with Caroline. Explaining that Klaus could make a full recovery, it just will take some time. Caroline was in the same state as Elena if not a slightly better one. Prior to the shooting Caroline had told Klaus she was once again pregnant with their third child. She went from being excited to being depressed in the span of twelve hours. She had no one else to blame for this mess other than the monster that shot her husband, Enzo.

Another day passed on, both of the Mikaelson boys were still in hospital. Elijah went back into surgery for a second time when they found internal bleeding. Klaus was getting better, had a lot more to fight for after. He was awake, but still hooked up to a machine and an IV. Caroline barely left his side other than to eat and use the bathroom. His two children were in the bed with him while Caroline slept on a cot that was brought in.

Elena was in the same position. She barely left Elijah's side neither did Ava. That was until Mikael asked to speak with Elena in private. The two went outside with a cup of coffee in each hand, sat on a bench a little down the way from the entrance.

"I just spoken to my contacts at the other agencies. There is something you should know." Mikael said as he pulled out his iPad. Elena saw a file with Stefan's photo.

"He works for the CIA?" Elena exclaimed.

"He has been since he was sixteen. That night you were…the night your parents died, it wasn't him. It was him that knocked you out to protect you, but it was Silas that truly assaulted you." Mikael explained to her. "Stefan had called Silas to let him know he would take care of you. Stefan was to bring you to the CIA, but Silas didn't trust his little brother. Silas met Stefan at the party in that room. Stefan left the room to call his informant Vicki who was dating Mason. When he got back, you were naked and bruised, he was covering you…"

"When Tyler came in." Elena finished for Mikael. She couldn't believe this. Stefan seemed so evil. She believed he was sleeping with Vicki because of the late night phone calls and texts. But he was working.

"It doesn't excuse the fact that he hit you, but he does wish to apologize." Mikael turned his head to look at Stefan who was walking up to them.

"Elena." Stefan spoke.

"I know." She said as she turned to look at Stefan. "You were playing a role, but you have to understand I can't forgive you right away."

"I do understand but there is something you should know about Damon" Stefan said.

"My boyfriend?" It felt weird saying boyfriend about Damon to Elena, but that was what he was.

"He is my brother. And he really does work with Silas." Stefan told Elena. Was everything not like it seemed? Elena thought to herself. Stefan wasn't her rapist, Damon was a bad guy. What else now?

"Anything else you two need to share with me?" Elena asked the two of them.

"Stefan isn't the only one undercover. Enzo works for MI6." Mikael said. Elena was about to scream. "And you are going to be joining them undercover by yourself."
